śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | iti me bhagavatā pūrvamuktaṃ tadetadadya tubhyaṃ kathitam || 1 ||

English

Vasishtha said: This was told to me by the Lord in the past, and now I am telling it to you.

tasmādanākhyānādbrahmaṇaḥ sarvataḥ sarvamanākhyānamutpadyate svayameva taddhanatāṃ prāpya manaḥ saṃpadyate || 2 ||

English

From the unmanifest Brahman, everything unmanifest arises everywhere. By itself, it attains the state of destruction and the mind is realized.

tanmanastanmātrakalpanapūrvakasanniveśaṃ bhavati tatastaijasaḥ puruṣaḥ saṃpadyate soayaṃ brahmetyātmani nāma kṛtavān || 3 ||

English

That mind, with the imagination of that element, becomes established. Then, the radiant being is realized. He, this Brahman, has made the name in the self.

tena rāma yoayaṃ parameṣṭhī tanmanastattvaṃ viddhi || 4 ||

Therefore, O Rama, know that this supreme being is the essence of that mind.

samanastattvākāro bhagavānabrahmā saṃkalpamayatvādyadeva saṃkalpayati tadeva paśyati || 5 ||

English

The Lord Brahma, who is of the nature of the mind and the essence of the self, due to his will, sees whatever he wills.

6

tatasteneyamavidyā parikalpitā anātmanyātmābhimānamayīti tena brahmaṇā giritṛṇajaladhimayamidaṃ krameṇa jagatparikalpitam || 6 ||

English

Thus, through ignorance, the self is imagined in the non-self, and by Brahman, this world is imagined step by step as consisting of mountains, grass, and oceans.

itthaṃ krameṇa brahmatattvādiyamāgatā sṛṣṭiranyata evāgateyamiti lakṣyate || 7 ||

English

Thus, step by step, creation has come from the reality of Brahman; it is seen to have come from something else.

tasmātsarvapadārthānāṃ trailokyodaravartinām | utpattirbrahmaṇo rāma taraṅgāṇāmivārṇavāt || 8 ||

English

Therefore, O Rama, the origin of all things existing in the three worlds is from Brahman, just as waves arise from the ocean.
