13.94.1

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | uttamādhama madhyānāṃ padārthānām itastataḥ | utpattīnāṃ vibhāgo'yaṃ śrṇu vakṣyāmi rāghava || 1 ||

Sri Vasishtha said: Listen, Raghava, I will tell you this division, of how things, the best, the worst and the middling, come to be, here and there, in many ways.

idaṃ prathamatotpanno yo'sminneva hi janmani | idaṃprathamatānāmnī śubhābhyāsasamudbhavā || 2 ||

That which is born first, in this very birth, is born from a good habit; it carries the name born-first-this-time.

śubhalokāśrayā sā ca śubhakāryānubandhinī | sā cedvicitrasaṃsāravāsanāvyavahāriṇī || 3 ||

It rests on good worlds, and it is joined to good deeds; and if it deals with the many different urges of worldly life,

bhavaist katipayairmokṣamityuktā guṇapīvarī | tādṛkphalapradānaikakāryākāryānumānadā || 4 ||

then though heavy with good qualities, it is said to reach freedom after only a few births; from this it can be worked out what kind of work, or lack of work, gives this same result.

tena rāma sasattveti procyate sā kṛtātmabhiḥ | atha ceccitrasaṃsāravāsanāvyavahāriṇī || 5 ||

Because of this, Rama, those who have mastered themselves call it sasattva, the one with sattva. But if it deals with the many different urges of worldly life

63.94.6

atyantakaluṣā janmasahasrairjñānabhāginī | tādṛkphalapradānaikadharmādharmānumānadā || 6 ||

in a very impure way, gaining true knowledge only after a thousand births, then it can be worked out that only such right and wrong deeds give this same result.

asāvadhamasattveti tena sādhubhirucyate | saiva saṃkhyātigānantajanmavṛndādanantaram || 7 ||

Because of this, the good call it adhama-sattva, the lowest kind of sattva. That same one, after a countless, endless heap of births,

saṃdigdhamokṣā yadi tatprocyate'tyantatāmasī | anadyatanajanmā tu jātistādṛśakāriṇī || 8 ||

if its freedom stays uncertain even then, is called utterly tamasic. But a birth that is not near at hand is one that acts in this same way.

yotpattirmadhyamā puṃso rāma dvitribhavāntarā | tādṛkkāryā tu sā loke rājasī rājasattama || 9 ||

Rama, best of kings, the middling birth of a person, the one that is completed within two or three more births, is called in this world rajasic, since it acts in this same way.

aviprakṛṣṭajanmāpi socyate kṛtabuddhibhiḥ sā hi tanmṛtimātreṇa mokṣayogyā mumukṣubhiḥ || 10 ||

Even a birth that is not far off is mourned over by the wise; for that state becomes fit for freedom, for those who seek freedom, only by that birth's death.

tādṛkkāryānumānena proktā rājasasāttvikī | saiva ceditarairalpairjanmabhirmokṣabhāginī || 11 ||

From working out such an effect, it is called rajasa-sattvika, rajasic-and-sattvic. And if this same one becomes fit for freedom after a few more births,

tattādṛśī hi sā tajjñaiḥ proktā rājasarājasī | saiva janmaśatairmokṣabhāginī cecciraiṣiṇī || 12 ||

then those who know call this same state rajasa-rajasi, rajasic-and-rajasic. And if this same one becomes fit for freedom only after a hundred births, taking a long time to seek it,

tvadukta tādṛgārambhā sadbhī rājasatāmasī | saiva saṃdigdhamokṣā cetsahasrairapi janmanām || 13 ||

then the good, as you have said, call it rajasa-tamasi, rajasic-and-tamasic, of such a beginning. And if this same one's freedom stays uncertain even after a thousand births,

tadukta tādṛśārambhā rājasātyantatāmasī | bhuktajanmasahasrā tu yotpattirbrahmaṇo nṛṇām || 14 ||

then it is called rajasa-atyanta-tamasi, of such a beginning, rajasic and utterly tamasic. But the birth of men from Brahman that has already lived through a thousand births,

ciramokṣā hi kathitā tāmasī sā maharṣibhiḥ | tajjanmanaiva mokṣasya bhāginī cettaducyate || 15 ||

is said by the great sages to be tamasic, slow in reaching freedom; and if that same one becomes fit for freedom in that very birth,

tajjñais tāmasasattveti tādṛśārambhaśālinī | bhavaiḥ katipayair mokṣabhāginī cettad ucyate || 16 ||

then those who know call it tamasa-sattva, tamasic-and-sattvic, having such a beginning. If it becomes fit for freedom after a few more births, then it is called

173.94.17

tamorājasarūpeti tādṛśair guṇabṛṃhitaiḥ | pūrvajanmasahasrāḍhyā purojanmaśatair api || 17 ||

tamo-rajasa in form, by those filled with such qualities. If it is rich with a thousand births before this, and also with hundreds of births before that,

mokṣāyogyā tataḥ proktā tajjñais tāmasatāmasī | pūrvaṃ tu janmalakṣāḍhyā janmalakṣaiḥ puro'pi cet || 18 ||

then those who know call it unfit for freedom, tamasa-tamasi, tamasic-and-tamasic. But if before that it is rich with a hundred thousand births, and before those too with hundreds of thousands of births,

saṃdigdhamokṣā tadasau procyate'tyantatāmasī | sarvā etāḥ samāyānti brahmaṇo bhūtajātayaḥ || 19 ||

then that one, whose freedom stays uncertain, is called utterly tamasic. All these kinds of beings arise together from Brahman.

kiṃcit pracalitā bhogāt payorāśer ivo'rmayaḥ | sarvā eva viniṣkrāntā brahmaṇo jīvarāśayaḥ || 20 ||

Slightly stirred by experience, like waves from an ocean of water, all these multitudes of individual souls have come out of Brahman.

svatejaḥspanditābhogāddīpādiva marīcayaḥ | sarvā eva samutpannā brahmaṇo bhūtapaṅktayaḥ || 21 ||

Like rays of light stirred by their own glow from a lamp, all these rows of beings have arisen from Brahman.

svamarīcibalodbhūtā jvalitāgneḥ kaṇā iva | sarvā evotthitāstasmādbrahmaṇo jīvarāśayaḥ || 22 ||

Like sparks born from the force of their own light, from a blazing fire, all these multitudes of souls have risen from that same Brahman.

mandāramañjarīrūpāścandrabimbādivāṃśavaḥ | sarvā eva samutpannā brahmaṇo dṛśyadṛṣṭayaḥ || 23 ||

Like rays from the disc of the moon taking the shape of mandara-flower clusters, all these pairs of the seen and the seeing have arisen from Brahman.

yathā viṭapinaścitrāstadrūpā viṭapaśriyaḥ | sarvā eva samutpannā brahmaṇo jīvapaṅktayaḥ || 24 ||

Just as the many different beauties of branches take the shape of the tree they come from, all these rows of souls have arisen from Brahman.

kaṭakāṅgadakeyūrayuktayaḥ kanakādiva | sarvā evotthitā rāma brahmaṇo jīvarāśayaḥ || 25 ||

Just as bangles, armbands, and bracelets are all made from gold, so all the multitudes of living beings, Rama, have arisen from Brahman.

nirjharādamalodyotātpayasāmiva bindavaḥ | ajasyaivākhiḻā rāma bhūtasaṃtatikalpanāḥ || 26 ||

Just as drops of water come from a clear, shining waterfall, so, Rama, all these countless creations of living beings come from the unborn one alone.

ākāśasya ghaṭasthālīrandhrākāśādayo yathā | sarvā evotthitā lokakalanā brahmaṇaḥ padāt || 27 ||

Just as the space inside a pot, inside a pan, and inside a hole is all the very same space, so all these imagined worlds have arisen from the state of Brahman.

sīkarāvartalaharībindavaḥ payaso yathā | sarvā evotthitā rāma brahmaṇo dṛśyadṛṣṭayaḥ || 28 ||

Just as spray, whirlpools, waves, and drops all come from water, so, Rama, all these visible sights have arisen from Brahman.

mṛgatṛṣṇātaraṅgiṇyo yathā bhāskaratejasaḥ | sarvā dṛśyadṛśo draṣṭurvyatiriktā na rūpataḥ || 29 ||

Just as the rivers of a mirage come from the light of the sun, so all these visible sights are, in their true nature, not different from the one who sees them.

śītarśmerita jyotsnā svāloka iva tejasaḥ | evametā hi bhūtānāṃ jātayo viviḻdhāśca yāḥ || 30 ||

Just as moonlight comes from the cool-rayed moon, and light's own brightness comes from its own brilliance, so too are these many different kinds of beings.

yasmādeva samāyānti tasmineva viśanti ca | kāścijjanmasahasrānte jātayaścirakālikāḥ | kāścitsatipayātītajanmarūpā vyavasthitāḥ || 31 ||

From whatever source they come, into that very source they enter again. Some kinds of beings last a very long time, until the end of a thousand births; some remain existing only in the form of a few past births.

itthaṃ jagatsu vividheṣu vicitrarūpāstasyecchayā bhagavato vyavahāravatyaḥ | āyānti yānti nipatanti tathotpatanti rūpaśriyaḥ kaṇaghaṭā iva pāvakotthāḥ || 32 ||

In this way, in these many different worlds, taking varied and wondrous forms, by the will of that Lord, these active creations come and go. Glorious forms rise, fall, and rise up again, like swarms of sparks rising up from fire.
