śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | purā me brahmaṇā proktaṃ sarvaṃ tatkathayānagha | yadidaṃ tatpravakṣyāmi tvayi pṛcchati rāghava || 1 ||
Vasishtha said: Long ago, Brahma told me everything about this. Now, I will narrate it to you, O sinless Rama, as you ask.
वसिष्ठ ने कहा: पहले ब्रह्मा ने मुझे यह सब कुछ बताया था। अब, मैं तुमसे कहूंगा, हे निष्पाप राम, जैसे तुम पूछ रहे हो।
पुरा मया हि भगवान्पृष्टः कमलसंभवः | इमे कथमुपायान्ति ब्रह्मन्सर्गगणा इति || २ ||
purā mayā hi bhagavānpṛṣṭaḥ kamalasaṃbhavaḥ | ime kathamupāyānti brahmansargagaṇā iti || 2 ||
Long ago, I asked the Lord, who was born from the lotus, 'How do these beings come into existence, O Brahma?'
पहले, मैंने कमल से उत्पन्न भगवान से पूछा, 'हे ब्रह्मा, ये प्राणी कैसे अस्तित्व में आते हैं?'
तदुपाश्रुत्य भगवान्ब्रह्मा लोकपितामहः | ऐन्दवाख्यानसहितं मामुवाच बृहद्वचः || ३ ||
tadupāśrutya bhagavānbrahmā lokapitāmahaḥ | āindavākhyānasahitaṃ māmuvāca bṛhadvacaḥ || 3 ||
Hearing that, the Lord Brahma, the grandfather of the worlds, spoke to me with a profound statement accompanied by the story of Indra.
उसे सुनकर, लोकों के पितामह, भगवान ब्रह्मा ने इंद्र की कथा के साथ एक गहन वचन देकर मुझसे कहा।
ब्रह्मोवाच | सर्वं हि मन एवेदमित्थं स्फुरति भूतिमत् | जलं जलाशयस्फारैर्विचित्रैश्चक्रकैरिव || ४ ||
brahmovāca | sarvaṃ hi mana evedamitthaṃ sphurati bhūtimat | jalaṃ jalāśayasphārairvicitraiścakrakairiva || 4 ||
Brahma said: Indeed, all this is the mind alone, which shines forth in various forms, like water in various beautiful reservoirs with circular patterns.
ब्रह्मा ने कहा: निश्चित रूप से, यह सब कुछ मन ही है, जो विभिन्न रूपों में चमकता है, जैसे पानी विभिन्न सुंदर जलाशयों में गोल पैटर्न के साथ चमकता है।
दिनादौ संप्रबुद्धस्य संसारं सृष्टुमिच्छतः | पुराकल्पे हि कस्मिश्चिच्छृणु किं वृत्तमङ्ग मे || ५ ||
dinādau saṃprabuddhasya saṃsāraṃ sṛṣṭumicchataḥ | purākalpe hi kasmiścicchṛṇu kiṃ vṛttamaṅga me || 5 ||
At the beginning of the day, as I awakened and desired to create the world, listen to what happened to me in some past creation, O dear one.
दिन के आरंभ में, जब मैं जागा और संसार को सृजना चाहता था, सुनो कि क्या हुआ था मुझे किसी पुरानी सृष्टि में, हे प्रिय।
कदाचिदखिलं सर्गं संहृत्य दिवसक्षये | एक एवाहमेकाग्रः स्वस्थस्तामनयं निशाम् || ६ ||
kadācidakhilaṃ sargaṃ saṃhṛtya divasakṣaye | eka evāhamekāgraḥ svasthastāmanayaṃ niśām || 6 ||
Sometimes, having withdrawn the entire creation at the end of the day, I alone, with focused mind, remain in that peaceful night.
कभी-कभी, दिन के अंत में सारी सृष्टि को समेटकर, मैं अकेला, एकाग्र मन से, उस शांत रात में रहता हूँ।
निशान्ते संप्रबुद्धात्मा संध्यां कृत्वा यथाविधि | प्रजाः स्रष्टुं दृशौ स्फारे व्योम्नि योजितवानहम् || ७ ||
niśānte saṃprabuddhātmā saṃdhyāṃ kṛtvā yathāvidhi | prajāḥ sraṣṭuṃ dṛśau sphāre vyomni yojitavānaham || 7 ||
At the end of the night, being fully awake, having performed the evening rituals properly, I resolved to create beings, focusing my gaze on the expansive sky.
रात के अंत में, पूरी तरह जागृत होकर, शाम के अनुष्ठान को ठीक से करके, मैंने प्राणियों को सृजने का संकल्प लिया, अपनी दृष्टि को विस्तृत आकाश पर केंद्रित करके।
यावत्पश्यामि गगनं न तमोभिर्न तेजसा | व्याप्तमत्यन्तविततं शून्यमन्तविवर्जितम् || ८ ||
yāvatpaśyāmi gaganaṃ na tamobhirna tejasā | vyāptamatyantavitataṃ śūnyamantavivarjitam || 8 ||
As long as I see the sky neither filled with darkness nor with light, completely pervaded, infinite, and devoid of any end.
जब तक मैं आकाश को न तो अंधेरे से भरा हुआ देखता हूँ न ही प्रकाश से, पूरी तरह से व्याप्त, अनंत, और किसी अंत से रहित।
सर्गं संकल्पयामीति मतिं निश्चित्य तन्मया | समवेक्षितुमारब्धं शुद्धं सूक्ष्मेण चेतसा || ९ ||
sargaṃ saṃkalpayāmīti matiṃ niścit ya tanmayā | samavekṣitumārabdhaṃ śuddhaṃ sūkṣmeṇa cetasā || 9 ||
Having firmly resolved to create, with that thought, I began to observe with a pure and subtle mind.
सृष्टि करने का दृढ़ संकल्प लेकर, उस विचार से, मैंने पवित्र और सूक्ष्म मन से देखना शुरू किया।
अथाहं दृष्टवांस्तत्र मनसा विततेऽम्बरे | पृथक्स्थितान्महारम्भान्सर्गान्स्थितिनिरर्गलान् || १० ||
athāhaṃ dṛṣṭavāṃstatra manasā vitate'mbare | pṛthaksthitānmahārambhānsargānsthitinirargalān || 10 ||
Then, I saw there in the expansive sky, with my mind, the great beginnings of creation, distinctly placed, stable, and unobstructed.
तब, मैंने वहाँ विस्तृत आकाश में, अपने मन से, सृष्टि के महान आरंभ को देखा, जो अलग-अलग स्थित, स्थिर, और अवरुद्ध थे।
तेषु मत्प्रतिबिम्बाभाः पद्मकोशनिवासिनः | राजहंसान्समारूढाः संस्थिता दश पद्मजाः || ११ ||
teṣu matpratibimbābhāḥ padmakośanivāsinaḥ | rājahaṃsānsamārūḍhāḥ saṃsthitā daśa padmajāḥ || 11 ||
In those (lotuses), the ten lotus-born (Brahma's sons), who are the abode of my reflection, are seated on royal swans and are situated.
उन (कमलों) में, जो मेरे प्रतिबिम्ब के आधार हैं, दस कमलज (ब्रह्मा के पुत्र) राजहंसों पर बैठे हुए स्थित हैं।
पृथक्स्थितेषु सर्गेषु तेषूद्यद्भूतपङ्क्तिषु | जलजालेषु शुद्धेषु जगत्सु जलदायिषु || १२ ||
pṛthaksthiteṣu sargeṣu teṣūdyadbhūtapaṅktiṣu | jalajāleṣu śuddheṣu jagatsu jaladāyiṣu || 12 ||
In the distinctly situated creations, in those wonderful arrays of water bodies, in the pure water-born worlds, in the worlds that give rain.
अलग-अलग स्थित सृष्टियों में, उन अद्भुत जल श्रृंखलाओं में, शुद्ध जलज लोकों में, वर्षा देने वाले लोकों में।
प्रवहन्ति महानद्यः प्रध्वनन्ति यथाब्धयः | प्रतपन्त्युष्णरुचयः प्रस्फुरन्त्यम्बरेऽनिलाः || १३ ||
pravahanti mahānadyaḥ pradhvananti yathābdhayaḥ | pratapantyuṣṇaruçayaḥ prasphurantyambare'nilāḥ || 13 ||
The great rivers flow, the oceans roar, the suns shine with intense heat, and the winds blow in the sky.
महान नदियाँ बहती हैं, समुद्र गर्जते हैं, सूर्य तेज गर्मी से चमकते हैं, और आकाश में हवाएँ चलती हैं।
दिवि क्रीडन्ति विबुधा भुवि क्रीडन्ति मानवाः | दानवा भोगिनश्चैव पातालेषु च संस्थिताः || १४ ||
divi krīḍanti vibudhā bhuvi krīḍanti mānavāḥ | dānavā bhoginaścaiva pātāleṣu ca saṃsthitāḥ || 14 ||
In heaven, the gods play; on earth, humans play; and in the netherworlds, the demons and serpents dwell.
स्वर्ग में देवता खेलते हैं, पृथ्वी पर मनुष्य खेलते हैं, और पाताल लोकों में असुर और सर्प निवास करते हैं।
कालचक्रपरिप्रोता यद्भावाः सकलर्तवः | यथाकालं फलापूर्णा भूषयन्त्यभितो महीम् || १५ ||
kālacakrapariprotā yadbhāvāḥ sakalartavaḥ | yathākālaṃ phalāpūrṇā bhūṣayantyabhito mahīm || 15 ||
Driven by the wheel of time, all the seasons, which are the states of being, are filled with fruits according to the time and adorn the earth all around.
काल चक्र से प्रेरित, जो भाव हैं, सभी ऋतुएँ, समय के अनुसार फलों से भरी हुई, पृथ्वी को चारों ओर से सजाती हैं।
प्रौढ्यं शुभाशुभाचारस्मृतयः ककुभं प्रति | नरकस्वर्गफलदाः सर्वत्र समुपागताः || १६ ||
prauḍyaṃ śubhāśubhācārasmṛtayaḥ kakubhaṃ prati | narakasvargaphaladāḥ sarvatra samupāgatāḥ || 16 ||
The mature understanding of good and bad deeds leads to the consequences of heaven and hell everywhere.
परिपक्व बुद्धि शुभ और अशुभ कर्मों की स्मृतियाँ स्वर्ग और नरक के फलों को सर्वत्र प्राप्त करती हैं।
भोगमोक्षफलार्थिन्यः समस्ता भूतजातयः | स्वमीहितं यथाकालं प्रयतन्ते यथाक्रमम् || १७ ||
bhogamokṣaphalārthinyaḥ samastā bhūtajātayaḥ | svamīhitaṃ yathākālaṃ prayatante yathākramam || 17 ||
All beings, desiring the fruits of enjoyment and liberation, strive for their own benefit according to time and sequence.
सभी प्राणी, भोग और मोक्ष के फलों की इच्छा रखते हुए, समय और क्रम के अनुसार अपने हित के लिए प्रयत्न करते हैं।
सप्तलोकास्तथा द्वीपाः समुद्रा गिरयस्तथा | अप्येष्यमाणाः कल्पान्तं स्फुरन्त्युरुतरारवम् || १८ ||
saptalokāstathā dvīpāḥ samudrā girayastathā | apyeṣyamāṇāḥ kalpāntaṃ sphurantyurutarāravam || 18 ||
The seven worlds, islands, oceans, and mountains, even those that will come in the future, resound with great noise until the end of the kalpa.
सात लोक, द्वीप, समुद्र और पर्वत, भविष्य में आने वाले भी, कल्प के अंत तक बड़े शोर से गूँजते हैं।
क्वचिद्भासित्वमायातं क्वचित्स्थिरतरं स्थितम् | स्थितं सर्वत्र कुञ्जेषु तमस्तेजोलवादृतम् || १९ ||
kvacidbhāsitvamāyātaṃ kvacitsthirataraṃ sthitam | sthitaṃ sarvatra kuñjeṣu tamastejolavādṛtam || 19 ||
Sometimes it appears, sometimes it is firmly established; it is present everywhere in the groves, covered with darkness and light.
कभी यह प्रकट होता है, कभी यह दृढ़ता से स्थित होता है; यह सभी कुंजों में अंधेरे और प्रकाश से ढका हुआ उपस्थित है।
नभोनीलोत्पलस्यान्तर्भ्रमदभ्रमधुव्रतम् | प्रस्फुरत्तारकाजालकेसरापूर्णतां गतम् || २० ||
nabhonīlotpalasyāntarbharamadabhramadhuvratam | prasphurattārakājālakesarāpūrṇatāṃ gatam || 20 ||
Within the blue lotus of the sky, the bees of the clouds wander, and the cluster of stars sparkles, filled with the filaments of light.
आकाश के नील कमल के भीतर, बादलों के भ्रमर भटकते हैं, और तारों का झुंड प्रकाश की रेशों से भरा चमकता है।
कल्पान्तघननीहारो मेरुकुञ्जेषु संस्थितः | शाल्मलेरमलं तूलमष्ठीलाकोटरेष्विव || २१ ||
kalpāntaghananīhāro merukuñjeṣu saṃsthitaḥ | śālmaleramalaṃ tūlamasṭhīlākoṭareṣviva || 21 ||
The dense fog at the end of the world is situated in the valleys of Mount Meru, like the pure cotton of the silk-cotton tree in the hollows of the Ashtila tree.
कल्पान्त का घना कोहरा मेरु पर्वत की घाटियों में स्थित है, जैसे सेमल का शुद्ध रूई अष्टील वृक्ष की खोखली जगहों में।
लोकालोकाद्रिरसनारणदर्णवघुंघुमा | तमःखण्डेन्द्रनीलाभा निजरत्नविराजिता || २२ ||
lokālokādrirasanāraṇadarṇavaghuṃghumā | tamaḥkhaṇḍendranīlābhā nijaratnavirājitā || 22 ||
The mountain Lokāloka, with its peaks resounding with the hum of bees, appears like a dark blue sapphire adorned with its own gems.
लोकालोक पर्वत, जिसकी चोटियाँ भौंरों की भनभनाहट से गूँज रही हैं, एक नीले नीलम की तरह प्रतीत होता है जो अपने रत्नों से सजा हुआ है।
धानाधरसुधा भूतरवकाकलिघुंघुमा | संस्थिता भुवनाभोगे स्वान्तःपुर इवाङ्गना || २३ ||
dhānādharasudhā bhūtaravakākalighuṃghumā | saṃsthitā bhuvanābhoge svāntaḥpura ivāṅganā || 23 ||
The nectar-like rain, with the humming of the clouds, is situated in the world like a woman in her inner chamber.
अमृत जैसी वर्षा, बादलों की गरज के साथ, दुनिया में एक स्त्री के अंतःपुर की तरह स्थित है।
गौराङ्गपङक्तिर्मध्यस्था रजनीराजिरञ्जिता | पद्मोत्पलस्रज इव लक्ष्यते वत्सरश्रियः || २४ ||
gaurāṅgapaṅktirmadhyasthā rajanīrājirañjitā | padmotpalasraja iva lakṣyate vatsaraśriyaḥ || 24 ||
The row of white clouds in the middle is adorned with the streaks of lightning, appearing like a garland of lotuses and lilies.
मध्य में स्थित सफेद बादलों की पंक्ति बिजली की चमक से सजी हुई है, जो कमल और कुमुद की माला की तरह दिखाई देती है।
बहुगर्तविभागस्थभूता लोकाः पृथक्पृथक् | जातारुणा विलोक्यन्तेदाडिमानीवकान्तिकाः || २५ ||
bahugartavibhāgasthabhūtā lokāḥ pṛthakpṛthak | jātāruṇā vilokyantedāḍimānīvakāntikāḥ || 25 ||
The worlds, situated in various divisions with many caves, appear distinctly red, like pomegranate seeds.
अनेक गुफाओं वाले विभिन्न विभागों में स्थित लोक, अनार के दानों की तरह अलग-अलग लाल दिखाई देते हैं।
त्रिप्रवाहा त्रिपथगा कृतोर्ध्वाधोगमागमा | जगद्यज्ञोपवीताभा स्फुरतीन्दुकलामला || २६ ||
tripavāhā tripadhagā kṛtordhvādhogamāgamā | jagadyajñopavītābhā sphuratīndukalāmalā || 26 ||
The river flows in three directions, moving upwards and downwards, resembling the sacred thread of the universe, shining with the pure rays of the moon.
यह नदी तीन दिशाओं में बहती है, ऊपर और नीचे की ओर चलती है, विश्व के पवित्र धागे की तरह दिखती है, चाँद की शुद्ध किरणों से चमकती है।
इतश्चेतश्च गच्छन्ति शीर्यन्ते प्रोद्भवन्ति च | दिग्लतासु तडित्पुष्पा वातार्ता मेघपल्लवाः || २७ ||
itaścetaśca gacchanti śīryante prodhavanti ca | diglatāsu taḍitpuṣpā vātārtā meghapallavāḥ || 27 ||
They move here and there, decaying and sprouting again, like lightning flowers in the directions, wind-tossed cloud buds.
वे इधर-उधर चलते हैं, सड़ते हैं और फिर से उगते हैं, दिशाओं में बिजली के फूलों की तरह, हवा से उड़े हुए बादलों के कलियों की तरह।
गन्धर्वनगरोद्यानलतावितानमालिनी | समुद्रभूमिनभसां पदवी प्रविराजते || २८ ||
gandharvanagarodyānalatāvitānamālinī | samudrabhūminabhasāṃ padavī pravirājate || 28 ||
Adorned with the creepers of the gardens of the Gandharva cities, it shines in the realms of the ocean, earth, and sky.
गंधर्व नगरों के उद्यानों की लताओं से सज्जित, यह समुद्र, पृथ्वी और आकाश के क्षेत्रों में चमकती है।
लोकान्तरेषु सङ्घेन देवासुरनरोरगाः | उदुम्बरेषु मशका इव घुंघुमिताः स्थिताः || २९ ||
lokāntareṣu saṅghena devāsuranaroragāḥ | udumvareṣu maśakā iva ghuṃghumitāḥ sthitāḥ || 29 ||
In other worlds, gods, demons, humans, and serpents gather together, like bees humming in fig trees.
दूसरी दुनियाओं में, देवता, असुर, मनुष्य और सर्प एक साथ इकट्ठे होते हैं, जैसे अंजीर के पेड़ों में गुंजारती हुई मधुमक्खियाँ।
युगकल्पक्षणलवकलाकाष्ठाकलङ्कितः | कालो वहत्यकलितसर्वनाशप्रतीक्षकः || ३० ||
yugakalpakṣaṇalavakalākāṣṭhākalaṅkitaḥ | kālo vahatyakalitasarvanāśapratīkṣakaḥ || 30 ||
Time, adorned with eras, aeons, moments, parts of moments, and the smallest units, carries away everything, awaiting the destruction of all.
समय, युगों, कल्पों, क्षणों, लवों, कलाओं, काष्ठाओं और कलों से सज्जित, सब कुछ ले जाता है, सब कुछ के विनाश की प्रतीक्षा करता हुआ।
एवमालोक्य शुद्धेन परेण स्वेन चेतसा | भृशं विस्मयमापन्नः किमेतत्कथमित्यलम् || ३१ ||
evamālokya śuddhena pareṇa svena cetasā | bhṛśaṃ vismayamāpannaḥ kimetatkathamityalam || 31 ||
Having seen thus with a pure and supreme mind, he was greatly astonished, thinking, 'What is this? How is this possible?'
इस प्रकार देखकर शुद्ध और परम मन से, वह बहुत आश्चर्यचकित हो गया, सोचते हुए, 'यह क्या है? यह कैसे संभव है?'
कथं मांसमयेनाक्ष्णा यन्न पश्यामि किंचन | तन्मायाजालमतुलं पश्यामि मनसाम्बरे || ३२ ||
kathaṃ māṃsamayenākṣṇā yann na paśyāmi kiṃcana | tanmāyājālamatulaṃ paśyāmi manasāmbare || 32 ||
How is it that with these fleshly eyes I see nothing, yet I perceive an unparalleled web of illusion in the sky of the mind?
यह कैसे हो सकता है कि इन मांसल आंखों से मैं कुछ नहीं देखता, पर मन के आकाश में मैं एक अनुपम मायाजाल देखता हूँ?
अथालोक्य चिरं कालं मनसैवाहमम्बरात् | अर्कं तस्माज्जगज्जालादेकमानीय पृष्टवान् || ३३ ||
athālokya ciraṃ kālaṃ manasaivāhamambarāt | arkaṃ tasmājjagajjālādekamānīya pṛṣṭavān || 33 ||
Then, having gazed for a long time with the mind alone, I brought one sun from that web of the universe and asked.
तब, मन के साथ लंबे समय तक देखने के बाद, मैंने उस ब्रह्मांड के जाल से एक सूर्य को लाकर पूछा।
आगच्छ देवदेवेश भो भास्कर महाद्युते | स्वागतं तेऽस्त्विति प्रोक्तो मयासौ कथितोप्यथ || ३४ ||
āgaccha devadeveśa bho bhāskara mahādyute | svāgataṃ te'stviti prokto mayāsau kathitopyatha || 34 ||
Come, O lord of the gods, O radiant sun, welcome to you, thus I said to him, and then I spoke.
आओ, हे देवों के देव, हे चमकते सूर्य, तुम्हारा स्वागत है, इस प्रकार मैंने उससे कहा, और फिर मैंने बात की।
कस्त्वं कथमिदं जातं जगदेव जगन्ति च | यदि जानासि भगवंस्तदेतत्कथयानघ || ३५ ||
kastvaṃ kathamidaṃ jātaṃ jagadeva jaganti ca | yadi jānāsi bhagavaṃstadetatkathayānagha || 35 ||
Who are you? How has this universe come into being, and how does it exist? If you know, O Lord, please explain this to me, O sinless one.
तुम कौन हो? यह ब्रह्मांड कैसे उत्पन्न हुआ, और कैसे अस्तित्व में है? यदि तुम जानते हो, हे भगवान, तो मुझे यह बताओ, हे निष्पाप।
इत्युक्तो मां समालोक्य संपरिज्ञातवानथ | नमस्कृत्वाभ्युवाचेदमनिन्द्यपदया गिरा || ३६ ||
ityuktō māṃ samālōkya saṃparijñātavānatha | namaskṛtvābhyuvācēdamaniṇḍyapadayā girā || 36 ||
Having been thus addressed, he looked at me and recognized me | Then, having bowed, he spoke these words with a flawless voice
इस प्रकार कहने पर, उसने मुझे देखा और पहचान लिया | फिर, नमस्कार करके, उसने निर्दोष शब्दों में ये बातें कहीं
श्रीभानुरुवाच | अस्य दृश्यप्रपञ्चस्य नित्यं कारणतामसि | गतः कस्मान्न जानीषे किं मामीश्वर पृच्छसि || ३७ ||
śrībhānuruvāca | asya dṛśyaprapañcasya nityaṃ kāraṇatāmasi | gataḥ kasmānna jānīṣe kiṃ māmīśvara pṛcchasi || 37 ||
Shri Bhanu said: You are always the cause of this visible universe | Why do you not know this, O Lord? Why do you ask me?
श्री भानु ने कहा: आप इस दृश्य ब्रह्मांड के नित्य कारण हैं | फिर आप इसे क्यों नहीं जानते, हे ईश्वर? आप मुझसे क्यों पूछते हैं?
अथ मद्वाक्यसंदर्भे लीला चेत्तव सर्वग | अचिन्तितां मदुत्पत्तिं तच्छृणुष्व वदाम्यहम् || ३८ ||
atha madvākyasandarbhe līlā cettava sarvaga | acintitāṃ madutpattiṃ tacchṛṇuṣva vadāmyaham || 38 ||
Now, if it is your playful desire, O Omnipresent One, to hear the unthought-of story of my origin, then listen, I will tell you.
अब, यदि आपकी खेल इच्छा है, हे सर्वव्यापी, मेरे उत्पत्ति की अचिंतनीय कथा सुनने की, तो सुनिए, मैं आपको बताता हूँ।
सदसदिति कलाभिराततं यत् सदसदबोधविमोहदायिनीभिः | अविरतरचनाभिरीश्वरात्मन् प्रविलसतीह मनो महन्महात्मन् || ३९ ||
sadasaditi kalābhirātataṃ yat sadasadabodhavimohadāyinībhiḥ | avirataracanābhirīśvarātman pravilasatīha mano mahanmahātman || 39 ||
