na babhūvātmajastasya marubhūmau tṛṇaṃ yathā | na vyarājata sā bhāryā tasya niṣphalapuṣpitā || 5 ||

He had no son, just as grass does not grow in a desert; that wife of his did not shine, like a plant that flowers but bears no fruit

They climbed onto a part of Mount Kailasa, like two young trees taking root, in that empty grove of Kailasa where no living being was found

83.86.8

yāvattretā dvāparaṃ ca yuge dve eva te gatetatastuṣṭo'bhavaddevastayoḥ śaśikalādharaḥ || 10 ||

Until the ages of Treta and Dvapara had both passed, then the god who wears a digit of the moon became pleased with them

dinātapātāpitayorinduḥ kumudayoriva | ājagāma tamuddeśaṃ yatra tau vipradampatī || 11 ||

Like the moon coming to two night lilies scorched by the day's heat, he came to that place where the Brahmin couple was

salatāpādapaṃ deśaṃ puṣpākara iveśvaraḥ | dampatī tau vṛṣārūḍhaṃ somaṃ somārdhaśekharam || 12 ||

As the lord of flowers comes to a land of creepers and trees, so the Lord came, and the couple saw Soma mounted on his bull, wearing the half moon on his crest

Their faces blossoming with joy, the two of them saw him as a night lily sees the moon; they bowed to that lord, pure as frost

143.86.14

dyāvāpṛthivyāvuditaṃ paripūrṇamivohupam | tarjayanpavanādhūtanavavṛkṣānanasvaram || 14 ||

He had risen as if filling the whole space between heaven and earth, as though silencing the sound of new leaves shaken by the wind

īśvara uvāca | mṛdūhāmasmitaspandi provācātha vacaḥ śivaḥ | varaṃ vipra gṛhāṇāśu tuṣṭo'smi tava vāñchitam || 15 ||

Ishvara said, then Shiva, speaking gently, smiling, his voice softly trembling, said these words, O Brahmin, quickly take a boon, I am pleased, ask for what you wish

vipra uvāca | madhumāsarasākrāntavṛkṣavam mudito bhava | bhagavandevadeveśa daśa putrā mahādhiyaḥ || 16 ||

The Brahmin said, be pleased like a tree overcome by the sap of the spring month, O lord, god of gods, give me ten sons of great intelligence

bhānuruvāca | bhavyā bhavantu me bhūyaḥ śoko yena na bādhate | athaiavamastviti procya jagāmāntardhimīśvaraḥ || 17 ||

Bhanu said, let them be excellent, so that sorrow may never trouble me again; having said, so be it, the Lord vanished

vyomni vārinidhirhrādaṃ kṛtvāvormimahāvapuḥ | tatastau dampatī tuṣṭau śivalabdhavarau gṛham || 18 ||

As if making a roar in the sky, of a form as vast as a wave, like the ocean, so the Lord departed; then the couple, pleased at having received the boon from Shiva, went home

gatau gīrvāṇasadṛśau khamivomāmaheśvarau | tatrāsau brāhmaṇī gehe babhūvodāragarbhinī || 19 ||

The two of them went through the sky looking like gods, resembling Uma and Maheshvara; there, that Brahmin woman became pregnant with a great womb, in the house

babhau pūrṇodarā śyāmā meghalekheva vāriṇā | kāle'tha suṣuve putrānpratipaccandrakomalān || 20 ||

Dark complexioned, with a full belly, she shone like a streak of cloud full of water; then, in time, she gave birth to sons soft as the moon of the first day

daśabālāṃstato mugdhānvasudheva navāṅkurān | kṛtabrāhmaṇasaṃskārā vṛddhimīyurmahaujasaḥ || 21 ||

Ten innocent children, like fresh sprouts of the earth, having had their Brahmin rites of initiation performed, grew up in greatness and strength

svalpenaiva hi kālena prāvṛṣeva navāmbudāḥ | te saptavarṣavayaso babhūvurjñātavāṅmayāḥ || 22 ||

In a very short time, like fresh clouds of the rainy season, at seven years of age they became learned in speech and scripture

virejustejasā tatra nabhasīvāmalā grahāḥ | atha kālena mahatā teṣāṃ tau pitarau tadā || 23 ||

There they shone with brilliance like clear planets in the sky; then after a long time, their two parents

saṃjagmatustanuṃ tyaktvā svāṃ gatiṃ gatikovidau | mātāpitṛbhyāṃ rahitā daśa te brāhmaṇāstataḥ || 24 ||

gave up their bodies and went their own way, being skilled in the knowledge of that path; then, deprived of mother and father, those ten Brahmins

yayuḥ kailāśaśikharaṃ gṛhaṃ saṃtyajya khedinaḥ | tatra saṃcintayāmāsurudvignāste vitandhavāḥ || 25 ||

Leaving their home behind, sad at heart, they went to the peak of Mount Kailasa. There, troubled and utterly without family, they sat thinking deeply.

kiṃ syādiha paraṃ śreya ūcuścedaṃ parasparam kiṃsih syātsamucitaṃ bhrātaraḥ kimaduḥkhadam || 26 ||

They said to each other, What is the highest good in this world? Brothers, what is truly right for us? What brings no sorrow?

kiṃ mahattvaṃ kimaiśvaryaṃ kiṃ mahāvibhavaṃ śubham kiṃ tadetajjanaiśvaryaṃ sāmanto hi maheśvara || 27 ||

What is true greatness? What is real power? What is great wealth that is truly good? What is this so-called power over people, when even a small chief is called a great lord?

sāmantasaṃpatkiṃnāma rājāno hi maheśvarāḥ kā nāma saṃpadbhūpānāṃ samrāḍiha maheśvaraḥ || 28 ||

What is the wealth of a small chief worth? Kings too are called great lords. What is the wealth of ordinary kings worth, when even an emperor here is called a great lord?

kiṃ nāma tanmahendratvaṃ yanmuhūrtaṃ prajāpateḥ vinaśyati na yatkalpe kiṃ syāttadih śobhanam || 29 ||

What is the glory of even being Indra worth, when to Brahma it lasts only a moment? What in this world does not perish within one age? What here, then, could really be good?

bhāṣamāṇeṣvathaitesu jyeṣṭho bhrātā mahāmatiḥ gambhīravāg uvācedaṃ mṛgayūthānmṛgo yathā || 30 ||

While they were speaking like this, the eldest brother, a man of great wisdom, spoke in a deep voice, the way one deer steps forward from a herd of deer.

aiśvaryāṇāṃ hi sarveṣāmākalpaṃ na vināśi yat| rocate bhrātarastanme brahmatvamihanetarat || 31 ||

Of all kinds of power, brothers, the one I like is the one that does not perish until the end of the age. That is the state of Brahma. Nothing else.

etaduktaṃ tadakhilā dvijaputrāsta uttamāḥ| vacobhiraindavāstatra sādhu sādhvityapūjayan || 32 ||

When this was said, all those excellent brothers, sons of the brahmin, praised him there with the words, Well said, well said.

ūcuścedaṃ kathaṃ tāta sarvaduḥkhopamārjanam| padmāsanaṃ jagatpūjyaṃ virañcitvamavāpnumaḥ || 33 ||

They said, But dear brother, how can we get the lotus seat, worshipped by the whole world, the state of Brahma that wipes away every sorrow?

bhrātrā tena punaḥ proktā bhrātaro bhūritejasāḥ| maduktaṃ sarva eveme bhavantaḥ pālayantu vai || 34 ||

That brother spoke again to his brilliant brothers, All of you, please just follow exactly what I tell you.

padmāsanagato bhāsvānbrahmāhamiti tejasā| sṛjāmi saṃharāmīti dhyānamastu cirāya vaḥ || 35 ||

Seated on the lotus seat, shining with light, thinking I am Brahma, I create, I destroy, let this be your meditation for a long time.

agrajene ti kathite bāḍhaṃ kṛtvā ta uttamāḥ| dhyānādhīnadhiyas tasthuḥ sahaiva jyāyasā rasāt|| 36 ||

When the eldest brother said this, the excellent brothers all agreed, Yes, so be it, and sat down together with him, their minds fixed on that meditation, doing it with real delight.

lipikarmārpitākārā dhyānāsaktadhiyaśca te| antasthenaiva manasā cintayāmāsurādṛtāḥ|| 37 ||

Their bodies as still as a painted picture, their minds absorbed in that meditation, they meditated with deep reverence, using only the mind turned inward.

atha utphullakamalakośavakronnatāsanaḥ| brahmāhaṃ jagatāṃ sraṣṭā kartā bhoktā maheśvaraḥ|| 38 ||

Then, seated on the raised, curved throne of a fully bloomed lotus's cup, they thought, I am Brahma, the creator of the worlds, the doer, the enjoyer, the great lord.

yajñakriyākrama vataḥ sāṅgopāṅgā maharṣayaḥ| sarasvatyātha gāyatryā yuktā vedā narā ime|| 39 ||

These great sages perform their sacrifices in proper order, complete with every part; these Vedas are joined with Sarasvati and Gayatri; these are the people of my world.

lokapālaparākrāntaḥ saṃcaratsiddhamanḍalaḥ| ayamuddāmasaubhāgyaḥ svargaḥ svaravibhūṣitaḥ|| 40 ||

This heaven, guarded by the mighty world-protectors, with groups of Siddhas moving through it, is full of boundless splendor and adorned with beautiful music.

parvatadvīpajaladhikānanaiḥ samalaṅkṛtam | idaṃ bhūmaṇḍalaṃ caiva trilokīkarṇakuṇḍalam || 41 ||

And this circle of the earth, decorated with mountains, islands, oceans, and forests, is like an earring worn by the three worlds.

etatpātālakuharaṃ daityadānavabhojitam | amṛtastrīgaṇākīrṇaṃ gṛhaṃ gaganakoṭaram || 42 ||

This hollow underworld is home to demons and titans, crowded with groups of immortal women; the sky is its hollow roof.

ayamindro mahābāhuḥ prajālaṅkṛtadottamaḥ | trailokyanagarīmekaḥ pāti pāvanayajñabhuk || 43 ||

This Indra, mighty-armed, whose great arms protect and adorn his people, alone guards the city of the three worlds, and eats the sacred offerings of sacrifice.

dīprajālavaratrābhiravaṣṭabhyātha diggaṇam | krameṇa pratapantyete bhānavo bhūribhānavaḥ || 44 ||

Holding the directions in place with reins of blazing light, these suns, radiant with abundant light, shine one after another in their proper order.

lokapālā ime lokaṃ rakṣanti śuddhavṛttayaḥ | maryādābhiratucchābhirgopālā gogaṇaṃ yathā || 45 ||

These world-protectors, pure in their conduct, guard the world with firm and serious limits, the way cowherds guard a herd of cows.

unmajjanti nimajjanti prasphuranti patanti ca | taraṅgā iva toyānāmimāḥ pratidinaṃ prajāḥ || 46 ||

Every day these creatures rise up and sink down, flash into view and fall away, just like waves on water.

sṛjāmīmamahaṃ sargaṃ saṃharāmi tathādṛtaḥ | ayamātmani tiṣṭhāmi śāmyāmi bhuvaneśvaraḥ || 47 ||

I create this whole creation, and I destroy it too with the same care. I, the lord of the worlds, stand within myself, and there I come to rest.

ayaṃ saṃvatsaro yāta idaṃ pariṇataṃ yugam | sṛṣṭerayamasau kālaḥ svayaṃ saṃharaṇasya ca || 48 ||

This year has gone by, this age has run its full course; this same time is the time of creation and, itself, the time of destruction too.

ayameva gataḥ kalpo brāhmī rātririyaṃ tatā | ayamātmani tiṣṭhāmi pūrṇātmā parameśvaraḥ || 49 ||

This same age of creation has gone. This night of Brahma too stretched out long and has passed. I stay resting within myself, the whole and complete self, the highest lord of all.

iti bhāvitayā buddhyā te dvijā atha aindavāḥ | daśādrivṛttayastasthuḥ samutkīrṇā ivopalāt || 50 ||

Thinking in this way with their minds deeply absorbed, the brahmins and the people of the lunar race sat unmoving, like ten mountains, as though they had been carved out of solid rock.

They had mastered the way of sitting in the lotus posture, and the web of all their other small, trivial mental activities had fallen away. Seated firmly and constantly on their kusha-grass mats, they shone for a long time in this way, looking just like lotus flowers.
