śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | etatte kathitaṃ sarvaṃ mayākhyānamaninditam | karkaṭyā himarākṣasyā yathāvadanupūrvaśaḥ || 1 ||

English

Shri Vasishtha said: I have narrated to you the entire flawless story of the black demoness Karkati, daughter of Himarakshasa, in proper sequence.

śrīrāma uvāca | himavadgahvare prōtthā sā kathaṃ kṛṣṇarākṣasī | babhūva karkaṭī nāmnā yathāvadvada me prabho || 2 ||

English

Shri Rama said: O Lord, how did she, who was born in the cave of the Himalayas, become the black demoness named Karkati? Please tell me in detail.

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | kulāni santyanekāni rākṣasānāṃ svabhāvataḥ | tāni śuklāni kṛṣṇāni haritānyujjvalāni ca || 3 ||

English

Shri Vasishtha said: There are many families of demons by nature. Some are white, some are black, some are green, and some are radiant.

karkaṭaprāṇisādṛśyātkarkaṭo nāma rākṣasaḥ | babhūva tajjā sā kṛṣṇā karkaṭī karkaṭākṛtiḥ || 4 ||

English

Due to the resemblance to the crab creature, there was a demon named Karkata. His daughter, who was black and had the form of a crab, became known as Karkati.

karkaṭīpraśnasamsmṛtyā mayaiṣā kathitā tava | adhyātmoktiprasaṅgena viśvarūpanirūpaṇe || 5 ||

English

Remembering your question about Karkati, I have narrated this story to you in the context of spiritual discourse and the explanation of the universal form.

sampannameva me kasmādasampannamiva sphuṭam | idaṃ jagadanādyantātpadātparamakāraṇāt || 6 ||

English

Why does this world, which is complete, appear to be incomplete? This world arises from the supreme cause, which has no beginning or end.

plāvinyo vīcayo vāriṇyananyānyāḥ sthitā yathā | vartamānā api pare sṛṣṭayaḥ saṃsthitāstathā || 7 ||

English

Just as waves are distinct yet part of the same ocean, so too are the various creations, though distinct, part of the same ultimate reality.

ajvalanneva kāṣṭheṣu vahnirarthakriyāṃ yathā | karoti markaṭādīnāṃ śītāpaharaṇādikam || 8 ||

English

Just as fire, though not burning, performs useful actions like removing cold for monkeys and others, so too does the ultimate reality perform various actions.

samaṃ saumyatvamajahadeva nityodayasthiti | tathā brahma karotīdaṃ nānā karteva sajjagat || 9 ||

English

Just as the sun, though one, illuminates the world with its eternal light, so too does Brahman, the ultimate reality, manifest in various forms in this world.

apyanāgata evāyamevaṃ sarga upāgataḥ | bhoḥ śālabhañjikāsaṃviddāruṇyeva mudhoditā || 10 ||

English

Even though it has not yet come, this creation has arrived in this manner. Oh, the awareness of the locust, how cruel it is, arising from ignorance.

bīje yathā'nanyadapi phalādyanyadivoditam | citau tathā'nanyadapi cetynamanyadivoditam || 11 ||

English

Just as the seed is not different from the fruit, similarly, consciousness is not different from the conscious entity.

acchedādekasattāyā na bhedaḥ phalabījayoḥ | cicchetyayośca vāryūrmyoriva vastuni kaścan || 12 ||

English

Due to the indivisibility of the single reality, there is no difference between the fruit and the seed, just as there is no difference between consciousness and the conscious entity, like the indivisibility of water and waves.

avicārātkuto bhedo naietayorupapadyate | yataḥkutaściduditaḥ sa vicāreṇa naśyati || 13 ||

English

Without proper examination, how can there be a difference between them? Whatever difference arises from anywhere, it vanishes with examination.

bhrāntireṣā yathā'āyātā tathā yātu raghūdvaha | jñāsyase tatprabuddhas tvam enāṃ kevalam utsṛja || 14 ||

English

This delusion has come in a certain way, let it go away in the same manner, O Raghunatha. You will know this when you are awakened, just abandon it completely.

bhrāntigranthau vitruṭite maduktiśravaṇāttataḥ | jñānaśabdārthabhedānāṃ vastu jñāsyasya laṃ svayam || 15 ||

English

When the knot of delusion is untied by listening to my words, you will naturally understand the essence of the distinctions in the meanings of the words of knowledge.

cittādiyamanarthaśrīstacca sā cetarā ca te | maduktiśravaṇādeva śāntimeṣyatyasaṃśayam || 16 ||

English

The wealth of the mind and other objects, that is, both this and the other, will undoubtedly attain peace by merely listening to my words.

brahmaṇaḥ sarvamutpannaṃ sarvaṃ brahmaivameti ca | madgīrbhiḥ saṃprabuddhaḥ san jñāsyasyalamaninditam || 17 ||

English

Everything is born from Brahman, and everything merges back into Brahman. Being awakened by my words, you will know the flawless truth.

śrīrāma uvāca | tasmādiyamiti brahanvyatirekārthapañcamī | nanu kiṃ viddhi deveśādabhinnaṃ sarvamityapi || 18 ||

English

Shri Rama said: Therefore, this is the fifth case of the meaning of the separation from Brahman. Now, what do you understand? Is everything inseparable from the Lord or not?

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | upadeśāya śāstreṣu jātaḥ śabdo'thavārthajaḥ | pratiyogivyavacchedasaṃkhyālakṣaṇapakṣavān || 19 ||

English

Shri Vasistha said: In the scriptures, words are born for instruction, whether they are sounds or meanings. They are endowed with opposites, distinctions, numbers, characteristics, and sides.

bhedo dṛśyata evāyaṃ vyavahārānna vāstavaḥ | vetālo bālakasyeva kāryārthaṃ parikalpitaḥ || 20 ||

English

This difference is seen only in worldly transactions, not in reality. It is conceived like a ghost for a child, for the sake of action.

dvaitaikyamapi no yasyāṃ tathā bhūtārthasaṃsthitau | asti tasyāmīdṛśaḥ syātkutaḥ saṃkalpaviplavaḥ || 21 ||

English

In the state of being where there is no duality or unity, how can there be such confusion of imagination?

kāryakāraṇabhāvo hi tathā svasvāmilakṣaṇam | hetuśca hetumāṃścaivāvayavāvayavikramaḥ || 22 ||

English

The relationship between cause and effect, the nature of ownership, the cause and the caused, the parts and the whole, all these are illusory.

vyatirekāvyatirekau pariṇāmādivibhramaḥ | tathā bhāvavilāsādi vidyāvidye sukhāsukhe || 23 ||

English

Differences and non-differences, transformations and illusions, various states of being, knowledge and ignorance, happiness and unhappiness, all these are illusory.

evamādimayī mithyāsaṃkalpakalanā mitā | ajñānāmavabodhārthaṃ natu bhedo'sti vastuni || 24 ||

English

Such false imaginations and calculations are for the ignorant to realize the truth; there is no difference in reality.

avibodhādayaṃ vādo jñāte dvaitaṃ na vidyate | jñāte saṃśāntakalanaṃ maunamevāvaśiṣyate || 25 ||

English

This debate arises from non-discernment; when duality is known, it does not exist. When the activity of thought is stilled and known, only silence remains.

sarvamekamanādyantamavibhāgamakhaṇḍitam | iti jñāsyasi siddhāntaṃ kāle bodhamupāgataḥ || 26 ||

English

All is one, without beginning or end, indivisible, and unbroken. You will know this principle when you attain enlightenment in due time.

vividante hyasambuddhāḥ svavikalpavijṛmbhitaiḥ | upadeśādayaṃ vādo jñāte dvaitaṃ na vidyate || 27 ||

English

The unenlightened argue with their own imaginative constructs. Through instruction, this debate ends, and duality does not exist when knowledge is attained.

vācyavācakasaṃbodho vinā dvaitaṃ na siddhyati | naca dvaitaṃ saṃbhavati maunaṃ vāpādayaty alam || 28 ||

English

Without the distinction between the signified and the signifier, duality cannot be established. Nor can duality exist in silence, which is sufficient in itself.

mahāvākyārthanisṭhāntāṃ buddhiṃ kṛtvā raghūdvaha | vacobhedamanādṛtya yadidaṃ vacmi te śṛṇu || 29 ||

English

O Raghava, having made the intellect firm in the meaning of the great statements, disregarding the differences in words, listen to what I am saying to you.

yataḥkutaściducchrāyaṃ gandharvapuravatmanaḥ | bhrāntimātraṃ tanotīdaṃ jagadākhyaṃ svajṛmbhaṇam || 30 ||

English

From somewhere, the mind, like the city of the Gandharvas, creates this world, known as the universe, which is merely an illusion.

yathā cetastanotīmāṃ jagannmāyāṃ tathānagha | śrṇu tvaṃ kathayāmīdaṃ dṛṣṭāntaṃ dṛṣṭivedanam || 31 ||

English

Just as the mind creates this world of illusion, O sinless one, listen, I will tell you this example which is the essence of perception.

yaṃ śrutvā sarvamevedaṃ bhrāntimātramiti svayam | rāma niścayavānbhūtvā dūre tyakṣyasi vāsanām || 32 ||

English

Having heard which, you will realize that all this is merely an illusion, and becoming certain, O Rama, you will abandon your desires from afar.

manomanananirmāṇamātrameva jagattrayam | sarvamutsṛjya śāntātmā svātmanyeva nivatsyasi || 33 ||

English

The three worlds are merely the creation of the mind's thoughts. Abandoning all, with a peaceful mind, you will reside in your own self.

madvākyārthāvadhānastho manovyādhicikitsane | vivekauṣadhaleśena prayatnaṃ ca kariṣyasi || 34 ||

English

Being attentive to the meaning of my words, you will make an effort to cure the disease of the mind with the medicine of discrimination.

evaṃ sthite jagadrūpaṃ cittameveha jṛmbhate | na vidyate śarīrādi sikatāntaratailavat || 35 ||

English

Thus, in this state, the form of the world is merely the mind expanding. There is no body or anything else, just like oil in sesame seeds.

cittameva hi saṃsāro rāgādikleśadūṣitam | tadaiva tairvinirmuktaṃ bhavānta iti kathyate || 36 ||

English

Indeed, the world is nothing but the mind, tainted by afflictions such as attachment | It is said that liberation from these afflictions is the end of existence

cittaṃ sādhyaṃ pālanīyaṃ vicāryaṃ kāryamāryavat | āhāryaṃ vyavahāryaṃ ca saṃcāryaṃ dhāryamādarāt || 37 ||

English

The mind should be controlled, protected, examined, acted upon nobly, adorned, engaged in worldly affairs, moved, and held with respect

sarvamabhyantare cittaṃ bibharti trijagannabhaḥ | ahamāpūramiva tadyathākālaṃ vijṛmbhate || 38 ||

English

The mind encompasses everything within, like the sky that supports the three worlds | It expands like the ego, according to the time

yo'yaṃ cittasya cidbhāgaḥ saiṣā sarvārthabījatā | yaścāsya jaḍabhāgaśca tajjagatso'ṅga saṃbharamaḥ || 39 ||

English

That which is the conscious part of the mind is the seed of all things | That which is the inert part of the mind is the confusion of the world

avidyamānamamevedamādisarge dharādikam | nirākṛtirajaḥ svapnaṃ paśyatīva na paśyati || 40 ||

English

This non-existent world, created at the beginning, appears like a dream, formless and passionless | It seems to be seen but is not seen

sargādidiīrghasamvityā śailādijaḍasamvidā | sūkṣmaṃ sūkṣmavidā cēti dēhaṃ śūnyaṃ na vāstavam || 41 ||

English

The body is not real, it is empty and perceived through the subtle knowledge of the self, which is beyond the gross and inert.

sarvagēnātmanā vyāptaṃ svacētyātmavapurmanaḥ | ātataṃ saumya vimalaṃ vārīva ravitējasā || 42 ||

English

The mind is pervaded by the all-pervading self, and it is pure and calm like water illuminated by the sun.

cittabālo jagadyakṣaṃ mithyā paśyatyabodhataḥ | bodhito'sau paraṃ rūpaṃ svaṃ paśyati nirāmayam || 43 ||

English

The ignorant mind sees the world falsely due to ignorance, but when enlightened, it sees its own true, flawless form.

yathātmā dṛśyatāmeti dvitvaikyabhramadāyinīm | śrṇu tatte pravakṣyāmi vakṣyamāṇakathāgamaiḥ || 44 ||

English

Just as the self is seen in the illusion of duality and unity, listen to what I will tell you through the narration of stories.

English

The stories and narratives on earth, whether they are appropriate or trivial, gain immediate illumination through the narration of examples and insights, just like the world is illuminated by the bright rays of the moon.
