13.80.1

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | mahāniśi mahāraṇye mahārākṣasakaṇyayā | iti prokte mahāpraśne mahāmantrī giraṃ dadau || 1 ||

Sri Vasishtha said: In that great night, in that great forest, when the great rakshasa girl asked this great question, the great minister began to speak.

mantryuvāca | śṛṇu toya dasaṃkāśe praśnametaṃ bhinadmi te | anukramātmakaṃ mattaṃ gajendramiva kesarī || 2 ||

The minister said: Listen, O you dark as a raincloud, I will break open this question for you, point by point, the way a lion tears apart a mad elephant.

bhavatyā paramātmaiṣa kathitaḥ kamalekṣaṇe | anayaiva vacobhaṅgyā praśnavidbodhayogyayā || 3 ||

O lotus-eyed one, you yourself have spoken of this Supreme Self, in this very turn of words, fit to awaken one who knows how to question.

43.80.4

anākhyatvādagamyatvānmanaḥ ṣaṣṭhendriyasthiteḥ | cinmātramevamātmāṇurākāśādapi sūkṣmakaḥ || 4 ||

Because it cannot be named, because it cannot be reached, and because it stands beyond the mind, which is the sixth sense, the Self is pure consciousness alone — an atom finer even than space.

cidāṇoḥ paramasyāntaḥ sadivāsadivāpi vā | bīje'ntardrumasatteva sphuratīdaṃ jagatsthitam || 5 ||

Within that supreme atom of consciousness, as if existing and as if not existing, this world stands and shines, the way a tree's being lies hidden inside its seed.

satkicidanubhūtitvātsarvātmakatayā svataḥ | tadātmakatayā pūrvaṃ bhāvāḥ sattāṃ kilāgatāḥ || 6 ||

Because it is felt, even a little, as real, and because by its own nature it is the self of everything, things earlier came to have their being by being made of that very self.

ākāśaṃ bāhyaśūnyatvādanākāśaṃ tu cittvataḥ | atīndriyatvānno kiṃcitsa evāṇuranantakaḥ || 7 ||

It is space, because it is empty on the outside, but it is not space, because it is consciousness. Because it is beyond the senses, it is nothing at all — and that same thing is also the infinite atom.

sarvātmakatvādbhukte ca tena kiṃcinnna kiṃcana | cidaṇoḥ pratibhā sā syādekasyānekatoditā | asatyeva yathā hemnnaḥ kaṭakādi tathā pare || 8 ||

Because it is the self of everything, it enjoys everything through that world, yet in truth it enjoys nothing at all. This is the shining-forth of the atom of consciousness, the one appearing as many — unreal, the way a gold bracelet and other gold ornaments have no being apart from the gold; the same is true of all these other things.

eṣo'ṇuḥ paramākāśaḥ sūkṣmatvādapyalakṣitaḥ | manaḥṣaṣṭhendriyātītaḥ sthitaḥ sarvātmako'pi san || 9 ||

This atom is the supreme space, unseen because it is so fine, beyond the mind, the sixth sense — it stands there, even though it is the self of everything.

sarvātmakatvānnaivāsau śūnyo bhavati karhicit | yadasti na tadastīti vaktā mantā iti smṛtaḥ || 10 ||

Because it is the self of everything, it is never empty, not at any time. One who says, 'what exists does not exist,' is remembered only as a speaker and a thinker, nothing more.

kayācidapi yuktyeha satō'sattvaṃ na yujyate | sarvātmā svātmaguptena apūreṇeva dṛśyate || 11 ||

By no reasoning at all can it be proved here that what exists does not exist. The Self of all is seen as if incomplete, only because it is hidden by its own self.

That same atom of pure consciousness is, here, everything — whatever stands in the mind. Yet it is nothing at all, because its form is beyond the senses; it stands stainless.

sa eva caiko'nekaśca sarvasattvātmavedanāt | sa evedam jagaddhatte jagatkośastathaiva hi || 13 ||

That same one is both one and many, because it is felt as the self within every being. That same one holds up this world, and it is likewise the very container of the world.

imāścittamahāmbhodhau trijagallavavīcayaḥ | prajñāstasminkacantyapsu dravatvāccakratā iva || 14 ||

In the great ocean of mind, the three worlds are its tiny waves. In that ocean, awarenesses shine the way whirlpools form in water because water is fluid.

so'haṃ bhavāneva bhavānsaṃpanno'dvaitavedanāt | sa bhavānna bhavennāhaṃ jāto bodhabṛhadvapuḥ || 16 ||

I am that, and you too are that very thing; you have become it through the knowing of non-duality. You are that; you are not a separate you, nor am I a separate I — both born now as the vast body of awareness.

tvaṃtāhaṃtātmakaṃ sarvaṃ vinigīryāvabodhataḥ | na tvaṃ nāhaṃ na sarvaṃ ca sarvaṃ vā bhavati svayam || 17 ||

Once understanding has swallowed up everything made of 'you-ness' and 'I-ness', there is no you, no I, no everything — and yet, of itself, everything still comes to be.

gacchann na gacchatyeṣo'ṇuryojanaughagato'pi san | saṃvittyā yojanaughatvaṃ tasyāṇorantare sthitam || 18 ||

This atom, while going, does not go, even though it seems to have traveled a great distance of many miles. That sense of having traveled a great distance exists only within the atom's own awareness.

na gacchatyeṣa yāto'pi saṃprāpto'pi ca nāgataḥ | svasattākāśakośāntarvāsitvādddeśakālayoḥ || 19 ||

This one does not go, even when it seems to have gone, and it has not come, even when it seems to have arrived — because it dwells within the sheath of its own being's space, beyond place and time.

gamyaṃ yasya śarīrasthaṃ kva kilāsau prayāti hi | kucakoṭaragaḥ putraḥ kiṃ mātrānyatra vīkṣyate || 20 ||

The one whose destination lies within its own body — where indeed would it go? Does a son held at his mother's breast ever appear somewhere else, apart from his mother?

gamyo yasya mahādeśo yāvatsaṃbhavamakṣayaḥ | antasthaḥ sarvakarturhiṃ sa kathaṃ kveva gacchati || 21 ||

The one whose destination is that great, imperishable region, stretching as far as existence itself, dwelling within as the doer of everything — how, and where indeed, would it go?

yathā deśāntaraprāpte kumbhe vaktrasamudrite| tadākāśasya gamanāgamane na tathātmanaḥ || 22 ||

Just as, when a pot with its mouth sealed is carried to another place, the space inside it does not really go or come — the Self does not even go and come like that.

cittatā sthāṇutā svāntaryadā sto'nubhavātmike| cetanasyajadasyaiva tadāsau dvayameva ca || 23 ||

When, within itself, the state of being conscious and the state of being an inert post both stand as forms of experience — one belonging to the conscious, one to the inert — then that Self appears only as a pair, split in two.

yadā cetanapāṣāṇasattaikātmaikacidvapuḥ| tadā cetana evāsau pāṣāṇa iva rākṣasi || 24 ||

But when the being of the conscious and the being of the stone are known as one self, one single body of consciousness, then, O rakshasi, that stone itself is nothing but conscious.

paramavyomnyanādyante cinmātraparamātmanā| vicitraṃ trijagaccitraṃ tenedaṃkṛtaṃ kṛtam || 25 ||

In the supreme space that has no beginning and no end, the Supreme Self, who is pure consciousness alone, has painted this strange picture of the three worlds — a thing made, though it was never really made.

tatsaṃvittyā vahnisattā tenātyaktānalākṛtiḥ| sarvago'pyadahatyeva sa jagaddravyapāvakaḥ || 26 ||

Fire exists because of that same awareness. Through that awareness, fire never loses its form. Though fire is everywhere, it still only burns what it burns - this is the fire made of the very stuff of the world.

prajvaladbhāsvarākārānnirmalādgaganādapiprajvalaccetanaikātmā tasmādagniḥ sa jāyate || 27 ||

Fire is born from the sky itself - a sky that blazes with bright light, is spotlessly pure, and is one with blazing consciousness.

saṃvedanādyadarkādiprakāśasya prakāśakaḥna naśyatyātmabhārūpo mahākalpāmbudairapi || 28 ||

Awareness itself is the light that lights up the sun and everything else. Because it has the light of the self as its own nature, it does not die even in the clouds of the great cosmic dissolution.

anetralabhyo'nubhavarūpo hṛdgṛhadīpakaḥsarvasattāprado'nantaḥ prakāśaḥ paramaḥ smṛtaḥ || 29 ||

It cannot be caught by the eyes; it is known only through direct experience. It is the lamp inside the house of the heart. It gives existence to everything, has no end, and is known as the supreme light.

pravartate'smadāloko manaḥṣaṣṭhendriyātigātyenāntarāpi vastūnāṃ dṛṣṭā dṛśyacamatkṛtiḥ || 30 ||

Our own light of awareness works by going beyond the mind and the five senses, reaching even inside things - the one who sees is himself the wonder that appears as the seen.

latāgulmāṅkurādīnāmanakṣāṇāṃ ca poṣakaḥutsedhavedanākāraḥ prakāśo'nubhavātmakaḥ || 31 ||

This light, which is nothing but direct experience, nourishes creepers, bushes, sprouts and other things that have no eyes or senses. It takes the very shape of the feeling of growing tall.

kālākāśakriyāsattā jagattatrāsti vedane | svāmī kartā pitā bhoktā ātmatvācca na kiṃcana || 32 ||

Time, space, action, existence, and the whole world - all of this exists only inside awareness. Yet there is no separate owner, no separate doer, no separate father, no separate enjoyer, because everything is the self - none of these is really anything apart.

aṇutvamajahatsō'ṇurjagadrātnaśamudgakaḥ | mātṛmānaprameyātma jagannāstīti kevale || 33 ||

Without losing its tiny, point-like nature, that point is the jewel-casket holding the whole world. As something made of a separate knower, a means of knowing, and a separate known object, the world does not exist at all - it exists only within the one single reality.

sa eva sarvajagati sarvatra kacati sphuṭam | yadā jagattsamudge'smiṃstadāsau paramo maṇiḥ || 34 ||

That very same one shines clearly everywhere in the whole world. When it is seen inside this box that is the world, then it is the highest jewel of all.

durbodhatvāttamaḥ sō'ṇuścinmātratvātprakāśadṛk | sō'sti saṃvittirūpatvādakṣātītastathā na san || 35 ||

Because it is hard to grasp, it seems like darkness; but that point, being pure consciousness itself, is a seeing full of light. It exists, because its very nature is awareness; but since it is beyond the reach of the senses, in that same way it also does not exist for the senses.

dūre sō'nakṣalabhyatvāccidūpatvānna dūragaḥ | sarvasaṃvedanācchailo hyasāvevāṇureva san || 36 ||

It seems far away, because the senses cannot reach it; but since it is pure consciousness, it is never actually far. Because it is felt inside everything, it is like a mountain - yet, while remaining only a tiny point, it truly is that very mountain.

tatsaṃvedanamātraṃ yattadidaṃ bhāsate jagatna satyamasti śailādi tenāṇāveva merutā || 37 ||

This world that appears is nothing but that same awareness. Mountains and things like that are not really real. So the greatness of Mount Meru itself exists within a single tiny point.

nimeṣapratibhāso hi nimeṣa iti kathyatekalpeti pratibhāso hi kalpaśabdena kathyate || 38 ||

What appears as a single moment is called 'a moment.' What appears as a whole age is called by the word 'an age.'

393.80.39

kalpakriyāvilāso hi nimeṣaḥ pratibhāsatebahuyojanakoṭisthaṃ manasyeva mahāpuram || 39 ||

A single moment can appear to be the whole play of an age's happenings - just as a great city that is millions of miles away can appear inside the mind.

nimeṣajaṭhare kalpasaṃbhavaḥ samudeti himahānagaranirmāṇaṃ mukure'ntarivāmale || 40 ||

A whole age can arise inside the belly of a single moment - just as a great city can appear inside a clear mirror.

nimeṣakalpaśailādipūrayojanakoṭayaḥyatrā'ṇāveva vidyante tatra dvaitaikyate kutaḥ || 41 ||

Moments, ages, mountains, and cities that stretch for millions of miles - all of these exist within a single tiny point. Where this is so, how can there be any question of two things or one thing?

kṛtavānprāgidamahamiti buddhāvudeti hi | kṣaṇātsatyamasatyaṃ ca dṛṣṭāntaḥ svapnavibhramaḥ || 42 ||

The thought 'I did this before' rises up in the mind. In one moment it feels true, in the next it feels false - the example for this is the confusion of a dream.

duḥkhe kālaḥ sudrīgho hi sukhe laghutaraḥ sadā | rātrirdvādaśavarṣāṇi hariścandrasya coditā || 43 ||

In sorrow, time feels very long; in happiness, it always feels shorter. For King Harishchandra, a single night was said to be twelve years long.

niścayo ya udetyantaḥ satyātmā satya eva ca | hemnīva kaṭakāditvaṃ sa eva citi rājate || 44 ||

The certainty that arises within us, whose very nature is real, is indeed real. Just as bangles and such shapes arise in gold, that same certainty shines within consciousness.

na nimeṣo'sti no kalpo nādūraṃ na ca dūratā | cidaṇupratibhaivaivam sthitānyānyānyavastuvat || 45 ||

In truth there is no moment, no age, no nearness, and no farness. It is only the tiny point of consciousness appearing, standing as one different thing after another, as if they were separate objects.

prakāśatamasordūrādūrayoḥ kṣaṇakalpayoḥ | ekaciddehayoreva na bhedo'sti manāgapi || 46 ||

Between light and darkness, between far and near, between a single moment and a whole age - since both sides are simply forms of the one same consciousness, there is not even the slightest difference between them.

pratyakṣamakṣasāratvādapratyakṣaṃ tato'tigamdṛśyatvenaiṣa vodeti cetā draṣṭaiva sadvapuḥ || 47 ||

A thing is 'seen directly' only because it depends on the senses; whatever goes beyond the senses is not seen directly in that way. This awareness may rise up appearing as 'something seen' - but really, it is the seer itself, and that is its true nature.

yāvatkaṭakasaṃvittistāvannāstīva hematāyāvacca dṛśyatāpattistāvannāstīva sā kalā || 48 ||

As long as we are aware of the bangle, its goldness seems, for that moment, not to be there. In the same way, as long as something appears as 'a seen object,' its true nature seems, for that moment, not to be there.

kaṭakatve'kṛte'dṛṣṭe suvarṇatvamivātatamkevalaṃ nirmalaṃ śuddhaṃ brahmaiva paridṛśyate || 49 ||

When the bangle's shape has not yet been made and is not seen, then, just as goldness spreads through the whole piece, only the pure, spotless ultimate reality is seen.

sarvatvādeva sadrūpo durlakṣyatvādasadvapuḥcetanaścetanātmatvāccetyāsaṃbhavatastvacit || 50 ||

Because it is everything, it seems real; because it is hard to point to, it seems unreal. It is conscious, because consciousness is its very nature; and because it cannot be seized like an object, it is also called not conscious.

ciccamatkāramātrātmanyasmiṃścitpratibhātmanijagatyanilavṛkṣābhe ciccetyakalane kutaḥ || 51 ||

In this world, whose whole nature is just the wonder of consciousness, whose very self is the shine of consciousness, appearing like wind moving through a tree, how can consciousness and the thing it knows really be two different things?

yathā tāpasyā pīnasya bhāsanaṃ mṛgatṛṣṇikā evaṃ pīvaramadvaitaṃ tathā cidbhāsanaṃ jagat || 52 ||

Just as a mirage is nothing but the shimmer of strong heat, so this world, thick and solid as it looks, is really one without a second, and is nothing but the shine of consciousness.

arkāṃśubhiḥ sūkṣmataranirmāṇaṃ yadanāmayam astitānāstite tatra kalpāderiva kaiva dhīḥ || 53 ||

The sun's rays build something very fine and flawless; and about whether it truly exists or not, what fixed idea can anyone have about that, just as with the ages of the world?

māyayāṃśukṇāṅke khe yathā kacati kāñcanam tathā jagadidaṃ bhāti cicchetyakalane kutaḥ || 54 ||

Just as, through illusion, gold seems to glitter in the sky where there is only a speck of light, so this world shines forth. How then can consciousness and the thing it knows really be two different things?

svapnagandharvasaṃkalpanagare kuḍyavedanam na sannāsadyathā tadvadviddhi dīrghabhramaṃ jagat || 55 ||

In a dream, or in a Gandharva's city in the sky, or in a city you only imagine, feeling a wall there is neither fully real nor fully unreal. Know the world to be exactly the same, a delusion that has simply lasted a long time.

tathā caivaṃvidhanyāyabhāvanābhyāsanirmalāt cidākāśena niryāti yathā bhūtārthadarśinaḥ || 56 ||

So too, when the mind has been made pure by practicing this kind of reasoning and reflection, a person passes into the open space of consciousness and comes to see things exactly as they are.

573.80.57

na kuḍyākāśayorbhedo dṛśyasaṃvedanādṛte | ābrahmajīvakalanādyadrūḍhaṃ rūḍhameva ca || 57 ||

A wall and open space are not really different from each other; they seem different only because of what is perceived. In the same way, from Brahman down to the individual soul, whatever has become a fixed habit of thought remains simply fixed, because it is a habit.

pratibhāsāccidākāśe sattvaśūnyaṃ bhavanti tāḥ | prakacanti hyanirbhāvyāḥ prabhāpiṇḍa iva prabhāḥ || 58 ||

Because of mere appearance, these appearances have no real substance in the open space of consciousness. They shine forth, impossible to pin down, like separate rays within one mass of light.

pṛthaktāmatibhāsasya svacamatkārayogataḥ | sarvātmikā hi pratibhā parā vṛkṣātmabījavat || 59 ||

Because of its own wonder-working power, this shining consciousness seems to break apart into separate things. But that highest shine is really the self of everything, the way a seed already holds the whole tree within it.

bījamantasthavṛkṣatvaṃ nānā'nānā yathaikadṛk | tathā'saṃkhyajagadbrahma śāntamākāśakośavat || 60 ||

As a seed holds a tree within itself, both many and not many, yet remains a single thing, so too the countless worlds and Brahman are at peace, like space held inside a covering of space.

bījasya antasthavṛkṣasya vyomādvaitā sthitiryathā | brahmaṇo'ntasthajagataḥ sākṣitvāccitsthitis tathā || 61 ||

As the tree hidden inside the seed exists in the same unbroken space as everything else, so, because Brahman is only the witness, the world held within it exists only as a state of consciousness.

śāntaṃ samastamajamekamanādimadhyaṃ nehāsti kācana kalākalanā kathaṃcit | nirdvandvaśāntamatirekamanekamacchamābhāsarūpamajamekavikāsamāste || 62 ||

It is peaceful, whole, unborn, one, without beginning or middle. Here there is, in no way at all, any division into parts. Free from opposites, peaceful, beyond everything, yet appearing as many, clear and pure, made only of appearance, unborn, it stands as a single, ever-unfolding whole.
