श्रीवसिष्ठ उवाच । अथ सा राक्षसी रक्षःकुलकाननमञ्जरी । तमस्येवाभ्रलेखेव गम्भीरं विननाद ह ॥ || १ ||

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | atha sā rākṣasī rakṣaḥkulakānanamañjarī | tamasyaivābhralekheva gambhīraṃ vinanāda ha || 1 ||

English

Shri Vasishtha said: Then that demoness, the blossom of the demon clan's forest, roared deeply like a dark cloud.

हिन्दी

श्री वसिष्ठ ने कहा: तब वह राक्षसी, राक्षस कुल के वन की मञ्जरी, गहरे अंधेरे बादल की तरह गरजी।

नादान्ते समुवाचेदं हुंकारापरुषं वचः । गर्जितानन्तरं जातकरकाशनिशब्दवत् ॥ || २ ||

nādānte samuvācedaṃ huṃkārāparuṣaṃ vacaḥ | garjitānantaraṃ jātakarakāśaniśabdvat || 2 ||

English

At the end of the roar, she spoke these harsh words with a humming sound, followed by a thunderous noise.

हिन्दी

गर्जना के अंत में, उसने इन कठोर शब्दों को गुंजार के साथ कहा, जिसके बाद एक गर्जना की आवाज आई।

भो भो घोराटवीव्योमपदवीशशिभास्करौ । महामायातमःपीठशिलाकोटरकीटकौ ॥ || ३ ||

bho bho ghorāṭavīvyomapadavīśaśibhāskarau | mahāmāyātamaḥpīṭhaśilākoṭarakīṭakau || 3 ||

English

Oh! Oh! You who are the lords of the sky and the sun, the great illusion and the dark throne, the rock and the insect.

हिन्दी

ओह! ओह! तुम जो आकाश और सूर्य के स्वामी हो, महामाया और अंधेरे सिंहासन, पत्थर और कीड़े हो।

कौ भवन्तौ महाबुद्धी दुर्बुद्धी वा समागतौ । मद्ग्रासपदमापन्नौ क्षणान्मरणकोचितौ ॥ || ४ ||

kau bhavantau mahābuddhī durbuddhī vā samāgatau | madgrāsapadamāpannau kṣaṇānmarṇakocitau || 4 ||

English

Who are you, wise or foolish, who have come here? You have reached the place of my consumption and are fit for death in an instant.

हिन्दी

तुम कौन हो, बुद्धिमान या मूर्ख, जो यहाँ आए हो? तुम मेरे ग्रास के स्थान पर पहुंच गए हो और एक क्षण में मृत्यु के योग्य हो।

राजोवाच । भो भो भूतक किं स्यास्त्वं क्व तिष्ठसि च देहकम् । दर्शयास्यास्तव गिरः को बिभेत्यलिनीध्वनेः ॥ || ५ ||

rājovāca | bho bho bhūtaka kiṃ syāstvaṃ kva tiṣṭhasi ca dehakam | darśayāsyāstava giraḥ ko bibhetyalinīdhvaneḥ || 5 ||

English

The king said: Oh! Oh! Spirit, who are you and where do you reside in the body? Show your form. Who fears the sound of bees?

हिन्दी

राजा ने कहा: ओह! ओह! भूत, तुम कौन हो और शरीर में कहाँ रहते हो? अपना रूप दिखाओ। कौन भौंरों की आवाज से डरता है?

सिंहवत्सर्ववेगेन पतन्त्यर्थे किलार्थिनःत्यज संरम्भमारम्भं स्वसामर्थ्य प्रदर्शय || ६ ||

siṃhavatsarvavegena patantyarthe kilārthinaḥtyaja saṃrambhamārambhaṃ svasāmarthya pradarśaya || 6 ||

English

Like lions, the seekers rush towards their goals with all their might. Abandon your anger and efforts, and demonstrate your own strength.

हिन्दी

सिंहों की तरह, सभी वेग से अपने लक्ष्य की ओर दौड़ते हैं। अपना क्रोध और प्रयास छोड़ दो, और अपनी शक्ति का प्रदर्शन करो।

किं प्रार्थयसि मे ब्रूहि ददामि तव सुव्रतकिं वा संरम्भशब्दाभ्यां भीषयास्मान्बिभेषि किम् || ७ ||

kiṃ prārthayasi me brūhi dadāmi tava suvratakiṃ vā saṃrambhaśabdābhyāṃ bhīṣayāsmānbibheṣi kim || 7 ||

English

What do you desire from me? Tell me, and I will give it to you, O virtuous one. Or do you wish to frighten us with your angry words?

हिन्दी

तुम मुझसे क्या चाहते हो? बताओ, और मैं तुम्हें दूंगा, हे पुण्यवान। या फिर तुम अपने क्रोधित शब्दों से हमें डराना चाहते हो?

क्षिप्रमाकारशब्दाभ्यां मायया सन्मुखीभवन किंचिद्दीर्घसूत्राणां सिद्ध्यत्यात्मक्षयादृते || ८ ||

kṣipramākāraśabdābhyāṃ māyayā sanmukhībhavana kiṃciddīrghasūtrāṇāṃ siddhyatyātmakṣayādṛte || 8 ||

English

Quickly, through the words of form and illusion, become favorable. A little long thread is accomplished without the destruction of the self.

हिन्दी

तुरंत, रूप और माया के शब्दों से, अनुकूल बनो। स्वयं के विनाश के बिना एक थोड़ा लंबा धागा पूरा होता है।

राज्ञेत्युक्ते रम्यमुक्तमिति संचिन्त्य सा तयोःप्रकाशायाप्य धैर्याय ननाद च जहास च || ९ ||

rājñetyukte ramyamuktamiti saṃcintya sā tayoḥprakāśāyāpya dhairyāya nanāda ca jahāsa ca || 9 ||

English

Hearing the words 'O King,' she thought, 'How beautifully spoken!' and to reveal her courage, she roared and laughed.

हिन्दी

'ओ राजा' शब्द सुनकर, उसने सोचा, 'कितना सुंदर कहा गया है!' और अपने साहस को दिखाने के लिए, उसने गरजा और हँसा।

English

Then, she saw them, their forms revealed, filling all directions with the sound of their laughter, shining brightly.

kalpābhrāśanikāṣeṇa ghṛṣṭāmadritaṭīmiva| svanetradvidyudvalayabalākojjvalitāmbarām || 11 ||

English

With the lightning-like flashes of her eyes, she appeared as if the mountain slopes were being rubbed by the clouds of the end of the world.

हिन्दी

अपनी आँखों की बिजली की तरह चमक से, वह ऐसी लग रही थी जैसे पहाड़ों की ढलानें प्रलय के बादलों से रगड़ी जा रही हों।

तिमिरैकार्णवौर्वाग्निज्वालाविवलनामिव| गर्जद्धनघटाटोपपीवरासितकन्धराम् || १२ ||

timiraikārṇavaurvāgnijvālāvivalanāmiva| garjaddhanaghaṭāṭopapīvarāsitakandharām || 12 ||

English

With her neck adorned with the sound of clashing bells, she appeared as if the flames of the submarine fire were spreading out from the ocean of darkness.

हिन्दी

अपनी गर्दन पर घंटों की आवाज से सजी, वह ऐसी लग रही थी जैसे अंधकार के समुद्र से ज्वालामुखी की लपटें फैल रही हों।

रणद्दशनसरम्भहाहाहतनिशाचराम्| रोदसीकज्जलस्तम्भां लीलयोल्लसितां पुनः || १३ ||

raṇaddaśanasarambhahāhāhataniśācarām| rodasīkajjalastambhāṃ līlayollasitāṃ punaḥ || 13 ||

English

With her laughter echoing like the clashing of teeth in battle, she appeared as if the pillars of water were dancing playfully in the sky.

हिन्दी

अपने हँसने की आवाज से, जो युद्ध में दाँतों की ठनक की तरह लगती थी, वह ऐसी लग रही थी जैसे आकाश में पानी के स्तंभ खेल-खेल में नाच रहे हों।

ऊर्ध्वकेशीं शिरालाङ्गीं कपिलाक्षीं तमोमयीम्| यक्षरक्षःपिशाचानामप्यनर्थभयप्रदाम् || १४ ||

ūrdhvakeśīṃ śirālāṅgīṃ kapilākṣīṃ tamomayīm| yakṣarakṣaḥpiśācānāmapyanarthabhayapradām || 14 ||

English

With her hair standing upright, her body emaciated, her eyes tawny, and her form full of darkness, she is the cause of fear and misfortune even for Yakshas, Rakshasas, and Pishachas.

हिन्दी

अपने बाल खड़े किए, शरीर दुबला, आँखें भूरी, और रूप अंधकार से भरा हुआ, वह यक्ष, राक्षस और पिशाचों के लिए भी भय और दुर्भाग्य का कारण है।

देहरन्ध्रविशच्छ्वासवातभांकारभीषणाम्| मुसलोलूखलालातहलशूर्पकशेखराम् || १५ ||

deharandhraviśacchvāsavātabhāṃkārabhīṣaṇām| musalolūkhalālātahalaśūrpakaśekharām || 15 ||

English

With her terrifying breath blowing through the openings of her body, and her head adorned with a winnowing basket, a pestle, a mortar, and a plow, she is fearsome.

हिन्दी

अपनी भयानक साँसों के झोंके से शरीर के छेदों से बहती हुई, और सिर पर सुप, ओखली, मूसल और हल से सजी, वह भयानक है।

स्फुरन्तीमिव कल्पान्ते वैदूर्यशिखरस्थलीम् | हासघट्टितविश्वेशां कालरात्रिमिवोदिताम् || १६ ||

sphurantīmiva kalpānte vaidūryaśikharasthalīm | hāsaghaṭṭitaviśveśāṃ kālarātrimivoditām || 16 ||

English

She appeared as if the end of the world had come, with a form like the peak of a blue sapphire mountain, laughing and shaking the universe, like the night of destruction.

हिन्दी

वह ऐसी लग रही थी जैसे कल्पान्त हो गया हो, नीलम पर्वत की चोटी के समान रूप धारण किये, हँसते हुए और संसार को हिलाते हुए, प्रलय की रात की तरह।

शरद्व्योमाटवीं साभ्रां कृतदेहामिवागताम् | शरीरिणीं महाभ्राढ्यां यामिनीमिव मांसलाम् || १७ ||

śaradvyomāṭavīṃ sābhrāṃ kṛtadehāmivāgatām | śarīriṇīṃ mahābhrāḍhyāṃ yāminīmiva māṃsalām || 17 ||

English

She appeared like the autumn sky with clouds, as if she had taken a physical form, like a cloudy night, full of flesh.

हिन्दी

वह शरद् ऋतु के आकाश की तरह बादलों सहित दिखाई देती है, जैसे उसने शारीरिक रूप धारण किया हो, बादलों से भरी रात की तरह, मांसल।

शरीरसंनिवेशेन पङ्कपीठमिवोत्थिताम् | तनुं चन्द्रार्कयुद्धाय तमसेव समाश्रिताम् || १८ ||

śarīrasaṃniveśena paṅkapīṭhamivotthitām | tanuṃ candrārkayuddhāya tamaseva samāśritām || 18 ||

English

She appeared as if rising from a muddy seat with her bodily posture, like darkness taking refuge in the battle between the moon and the sun.

हिन्दी

वह अपनी शारीरिक स्थिति से कीचड़ की सीट से उठती हुई दिखाई देती है, जैसे अंधेरा चंद्रमा और सूर्य के युद्ध में शरण ले रहा हो।

इन्द्रनीलमहाशुभ्रलम्बाभ्रयुगलोपमौ | उलूखलादिहारौघौ दधानामसितौ स्तनौ || १९ ||

indranīlamahāśubhralambābhrayugalopamau | ulūkhalādihāraughau dadhānāmasitau stanau || 19 ||

English

Her dark breasts were like two large, bright, blue sapphire clouds, adorned with necklaces and other ornaments.

हिन्दी

उनके काले स्तन दो बड़े, चमकदार, नीले नीलम बादलों के समान थे, जो हारों और अन्य आभूषणों से सजे हुए थे।

लग्नामङ्गारकाष्ठेन समानां च महातनुम् | द्रुमाभास्पन्दसशिरलसद्भुजलतातनुम् || २० ||

lagnāmaṅgārakāṣṭhena samānāṃ ca mahātanum | drumābhāspandasaśiralasadbhujalatātanum || 20 ||

English

She was adorned with a piece of charcoal, her large body was equal in size, and her delicate arms were like the trembling branches of a tree.

हिन्दी

वह एक कोयले के टुकड़े से सजी हुई थी, उसका बड़ा शरीर समान आकार का था, और उसकी कोमल भुजाएँ काँपते हुए पेड़ की डालों की तरह थीं।

तामवेक्ष्य महावीरौ तथैवाक्षुभितौ स्थितौ | न तदस्ति विमोहाय यद्विविक्तस्य चेतसः || २१ ||

tāmavekṣya mahāvīrau tathaivākṣubhitau sthitau | na tadasti vimohāya yadviviktasya cetasaḥ || 21 ||

English

Seeing her, the two great heroes stood there, similarly agitated. There is nothing that can delude a mind that is clear.

हिन्दी

उसे देखकर, दोनों महावीर वहाँ उसी तरह विचलित होकर खड़े रहे। स्पष्ट चित्त को भ्रमित करने के लिए कुछ भी नहीं है।

मन्त्र्युवाच | महाराक्षसि संरम्भो महात्मा किमयं तव | लघवो ह्यथवा कार्ये लघावप्यतिसंभ्रमाः || २२ ||

mantryuvāca | mahārākṣasi saṃrambho mahātmā kimayaṃ tava | laghavo hyathavā kārye laghāvapyatisambhramāḥ || 22 ||

English

The advisor spoke: O great demon, what is this anger of yours, O great one? Even in small matters, there are great confusions.

हिन्दी

मंत्री ने कहा: हे महाराक्षस, यह तुम्हारा क्रोध क्या है, हे महात्मा? छोटे कामों में भी बड़े उलझने होते हैं।

त्यज संरम्भमारम्भो नायं तव विराजते | विषये हि प्रवर्तन्ते धीमन्तः स्वार्थसाधकाः || २३ ||

tyaja saṃrambhamārambho nāyaṃ tava virājate | viṣaye hi pravartante dhīmantaḥ svārthasādhakāḥ || 23 ||

English

Abandon this anger, O beginner, it does not suit you. Indeed, the wise engage in matters for their own benefit.

हिन्दी

इस क्रोध को त्याग दो, हे आरंभकर्ता, यह तुम्हें शोभा नहीं देता। वास्तव में, बुद्धिमान लोग अपने हित के लिए कामों में लगे होते हैं।

त्वादृशानां सहस्राणि मशकानामिवाबले | अस्माकं धीरतावात्याव्यूढानि तृणपर्णवत् || २४ ||

tvādṛśānāṃ sahasrāṇi maśakānāmivābale | asmākaṃ dhīratāvātyāvyūḍhāni tṛṇaparṇavat || 24 ||

English

Thousands like you, O weak one, are like mosquitoes in strength. Our steadfastness is like the grass blades, numerous and strong.

हिन्दी

तुम्हारे जैसे हजारों, हे दुर्बल, मच्छरों की तरह बल में हैं। हमारी धैर्य घास की पत्तियों की तरह बहुत और मजबूत है।

संरम्भद्वारमुत्सृज्य समतास्वच्छया धिया | युक्ता च व्यवहारिण्या स्वार्थः प्राज्ञेन साध्यते || २५ ||

saṃrambhadvāramutsṛjya samatāsvacchayā dhiyā | yuktā ca vyavahāriṇyā svārthaḥ prājñena sādhyate || 25 ||

English

Abandoning the path of anger, with a mind pure and equal, and with proper conduct, one's own interest is achieved by the wise.

हिन्दी

क्रोध के द्वार को छोड़कर, शुद्ध और समान मन से, और उचित आचरण के साथ, बुद्धिमान अपने हित को प्राप्त करता है।

स्वेनेव व्यवहारेण कार्यं सिद्ध्यतु वा न वा | महानियतिरित्येव भ्रमस्यावसरो हि कः || २६ ||

sveneva vyavahāreṇa kāryaṃ siddhyatu vā na vā | mahāniyatiritveva bhramasya avasaro hi kaḥ || 26 ||

English

Whether the task is accomplished by one's own efforts or not, what is the opportunity for delusion? It is indeed the great destiny.

हिन्दी

चाहे कार्य अपने प्रयास से सिद्ध हो या न हो, भ्रम का अवसर क्या है? यह महान नियति है।

27

कथयाभिमतं किं ते किमर्थयसि चार्थिनी | अर्थी स्वप्नेऽपि नास्माकमप्राप्तार्थः पुरो गतः || २७ ||

kathayābhimataṃ kiṃ te kimarthayasi cārthinī | arthī svapne'pi nāsmākamaprāptārthaḥ puro gataḥ || 27 ||

English

What do you desire to say? What do you seek, O seeker? Even in a dream, one who desires does not go before us without achieving their goal.

हिन्दी

तुम क्या कहना चाहते हो? तुम क्या चाहते हो, हे चाहने वाली? स्वप्न में भी, जो चाहता है वह अपने लक्ष्य को प्राप्त किए बिना हमारे सामने नहीं आता।

इत्युक्ता सा तदा तेन चिन्तयामास राक्षसी | अहो नु विमलाचारं सत्त्वं पुरुषसिंहयोः || २८ ||

ityuktā sā tadā tena cintayāmāsa rākṣasī | aho nu vimalācāraṃ sattvaṃ puruṣasiṃhayoḥ || 28 ||

English

Thus spoken to by him at that time, the demoness thought, 'Ah, indeed the pure conduct and virtue of the lion-like men.'

हिन्दी

उस समय उससे ऐसा कहे जाने पर, राक्षसी ने सोचा, 'अहो, निश्चय ही शेर जैसे पुरुषों का पवित्र चरित्र और सत्त्व है।'

न सामान्याविमौ मन्ये विचित्रेयं चमत्कृतिः | वचोवक्रेक्षणेनैव वदत्यन्तर्विनिश्चयम् || २९ ||

na sāmānyāvimau manye vicitreyam camatkṛtiḥ | vacovakrekekṣaṇenaiva vadatyantarviniścayam || 29 ||

English

I do not consider these two to be ordinary; this is a wonderful marvel. By the mere glance of his words, he speaks with inner certainty.

हिन्दी

मैं इन दोनों को सामान्य नहीं मानता; यह एक अद्भुत चमत्कार है। अपने शब्दों की दृष्टि से ही, वह अंतर्निश्चय से बोलता है।

वचोवक्रेक्षणद्वारैर्धीमतामाशया मिथः | एकीभवन्ति सरितां पयांसि वलनैरिव || ३० ||

vacovakrekekṣaṇadvārairdhīmatāmāśayā mithaḥ | ekībhavanti saritāṃ payāṃsi valanairiva || 30 ||

English

By the means of the glance of words, the intentions of the wise become united, just as the waters of rivers unite with each other by their currents.

हिन्दी

शब्दों की दृष्टि के माध्यम से, बुद्धिमानों के इरादे एक हो जाते हैं, जैसे नदियों के पानी अपनी धाराओं से एक दूसरे से मिल जाते हैं।

आभ्यां प्रायः परिज्ञातो मम भावोऽनयोर्मया | न विनाश्यौ मया चेमौ स्वयमेवाविनाशिनौ || ३१ ||

ābhyāṃ prāyaḥ parijñāto mama bhāvo'nayormayā | na vināśyau mayā cemau svayamevāvinaśinau || 31 ||

English

I have come to know the nature of these two through their actions. They are indestructible by me; they are self-destructible.

हिन्दी

मैंने इन दोनों के स्वभाव को उनके कार्यों से जान लिया है। ये मेरे द्वारा नष्ट नहीं हो सकते; ये स्वयं ही नष्ट हो सकते हैं।

मन्ये भवेतामात्मज्ञौ नात्मज्ञानादृते मतिः | प्रमृष्टसदसद्भावाद्भवत्यस्तभया मृतौ || ३२ ||

manye bhavetāmātmajñau nātmajñānādṛte matiḥ | pramṛṣṭasadasadbhāvādbhavatyastabhayā mṛtau || 32 ||

English

I believe these two are self-aware. Without self-awareness, there is no intelligence. From the examination of existence and non-existence, there is fearlessness in death.

हिन्दी

मैं समझता हूँ कि ये दोनों आत्मज्ञानी हैं। आत्मज्ञान के बिना बुद्धि नहीं होती। अस्तित्व और अनस्तित्व के परीक्षण से मृत्यु में निर्भयता आती है।

तदेतौ परिपृच्छामि किंचित्संदेहमुत्थितम् | प्राज्ञं प्राप्य न पृच्छन्ति ये केचित्ते नराधमाः || ३३ ||

tadetau paripṛcchāmi kiṃcitsaṃdehamutthitam | prājñaṃ prāpya na pṛcchanti ye kecitte narādhamāḥ || 33 ||

English

Therefore, I ask these two about a doubt that has arisen. Those who do not ask questions upon meeting a wise person are the lowest of men.

हिन्दी

इसलिए, मैं इन दोनों से एक उत्पन्न संदेह के बारे में पूछता हूँ। जो लोग ज्ञानी से मिलकर प्रश्न नहीं पूछते, वे निकृष्टतम मनुष्य हैं।

iti saṃcintya pṛcchāyai tanvānāvasaraṃ tataḥ | akālakalpābhra ravaṃ hāsaṃ saṃyamya sābravīt || 34 ||

English

Thus, having thought about it, she created an opportunity to ask a question. Then, controlling her laughter, which was like the sound of untimely clouds, she spoke.

हिन्दी

इस प्रकार, सोचकर, उसने प्रश्न पूछने का अवसर बनाया। फिर, अकाल में बादलों की गर्जना जैसी हँसी को रोककर, उसने कहा।

कौ भवन्तौ नरौ धीरौ कथ्यतामिति मेऽनघौ | जायते दर्शनादेव मैत्री विशदचेतसाम् || ३५ ||

kau bhavantau narau dhīrau kathyatāmiti me'naghau | jāyate darśanādeva maitrī viśadacetasām || 35 ||

English

Who are you, noble men? Please tell me, O sinless ones. Friendship arises merely from seeing those with pure hearts.

हिन्दी

तुम कौन हो, ओ धीर पुरुषो? मुझे बताओ, ओ निष्पाप। पवित्र हृदय वालों को देखकर ही मित्रता उत्पन्न होती है।

मन्त्र्युवाच | अयं राजा किरातानामस्याहं मन्त्रितां गतः | उद्यतौ रात्रिचर्येण त्वादृग्जनविनिग्रहे || ३६ ||

mantryuvāca | ayaṃ rājā kirātānāmasyāhaṃ mantritāṃ gataḥ | udyatau rātricaryeṇa tvādṛgjanavinigrahe || 36 ||

English

The minister said: This is the king of the Kiratas, I have come to advise him. He is ready to suppress such people who move at night.

हिन्दी

मंत्री ने कहा: यह किरातों का राजा है, मैं उसकी सलाह करने आया हूँ। वह ऐसे लोगों को दबाने के लिए तैयार है जो रात में घूमते हैं।

राज्ञो रात्रिंदिवं धर्मो दुष्टभूतविनिग्रहः | स्वधर्मत्यागिनो ये तु ते विनाशानलेन्धनम् || ३७ ||

rājño rātrindivaṃ dharmo duṣṭabhūtavinigrahaḥ | svadharmatyāgino ye tu te vināśānalendhanam || 37 ||

English

The duty of the king, day and night, is to suppress evil spirits. Those who abandon their own duties are fuel for the fire of destruction.

हिन्दी

राक्षस्युवाच | राजंस्त्वमसि दुर्मन्त्री दुर्मन्त्री न नृपो भवेत् | सद्रूपस्य भवेन्मन्त्री राजा सन्मन्त्रिणो भवेत् || ३८ ||

rākṣasyuvāca | rājaṃstvamasi durmantrī durmantrī na nṛpo bhavet | sadrūpasya bhavenmantrī rājā sanmantrīṇo bhavet || 38 ||

English

The demon said: O king, you are a bad advisor. A bad advisor cannot be a king. A good advisor should be of good character, and a king should have good advisors.

राक्षस ने कहा: हे राजा, तुम एक बुरा सलाहकार हो। एक बुरा सलाहकार राजा नहीं हो सकता। एक अच्छा सलाहकार अच्छे चरित्र का होना चाहिए, और एक राजा को अच्छे सलाहकारों का होना चाहिए।

राजा चादौ विवेकेन योजनीयः सुमन्त्रिणा | तेनार्यतामुपायाति यथा राजा तथा प्रजाः || ३९ ||

rājā cādau vivekena yojanīyaḥ sumantrīṇā | tenāryatāmupāyāti yathā rājā tathā prajāḥ || 39 ||

English

A king should be appointed with discretion by good advisors. Through this, nobility is attained, as the king is, so are the subjects.

एक राजा को अच्छे सलाहकारों द्वारा विवेकपूर्वक नियुक्त किया जाना चाहिए। इससे उत्तमता प्राप्त होती है, जैसा राजा होता है, वैसे ही प्रजा होती है।

समस्तगुणजालानामध्यात्मज्ञानमुत्तमम् | तद्विद्राजा भवेद्राजा तद्विन्मन्त्री च मन्त्रवित् || ४० ||

samastaguṇajālānāmadhyātmajñānamuttamam | tadvidrājā bhavedrājā tadvimmantrī ca mantravit || 40 ||

English

The highest knowledge is the knowledge of the self, which encompasses all virtues. One who possesses this knowledge becomes a true king, and one who lacks it is merely a advisor who knows the mantras.

सर्वोच्च ज्ञान आत्मज्ञान है, जो सभी गुणों को समेटे हुए है। जो इस ज्ञान को प्राप्त करता है, वही सच्चा राजा बनता है, और जो इससे वंचित है, वह केवल मंत्रों को जानने वाला सलाहकार है।

प्रभुत्वं समदृष्टित्वं तच्च स्याद्राजविद्यया| तामेव यो न जानाति नासौ मन्त्री न सोऽधिपः|| ४१ ||

prabhutvaṃ samadṛṣṭitvaṃ tacca syādrājavidyayā| tāmeva yo na jānāti nāsau mantrī na so'dhipaḥ|| 41 ||

English

Sovereignty and impartiality come from the knowledge of statecraft| One who does not know this is neither a minister nor a king

भवन्तौ तद्विदौ साधू यदि तच्छ्रेय आप्नुथः| नो चेदनर्थदौ स्वस्याः प्रकृतेरद्म्यहं युवाम्|| ४२ ||

bhavantau tadvidau sādhū yadi tacchreya āpnuthaḥ| no cedanarthadau svasyāḥ prakṛteradmyahaṃ yuvām|| 42 ||

English

If you two are knowledgeable and virtuous, you will achieve the highest good| If not, I will consider you both as harmful to your own nature

यदि आप दोनों ज्ञानी और साधु हैं, तो आप उच्चतम कल्याण प्राप्त करेंगे| यदि नहीं, तो मैं आप दोनों को अपनी प्रकृति के लिए हानिकारक मानूंगा

एकोपायेन मत्पार्श्वाद्वालकावुत्तरिष्यथः| मत्प्रश्नपञ्जरं सारं चेद्विचारयथो धिया|| ४३ ||

ekopāyena matpārśvādvālakāvuttariṣyathaḥ| matpraśnapañjaraṃ sāraṃ cedvicārayatho dhiyā|| 43 ||

English

With one means, you will rise from my side, young ones| If you ponder over the essence of my questions with your intellect

praśnānimānkathaya pārthiva vā ca mantrīṃstatrārthinī bhṛśamahaṃ paripūrayārtham| aṅgīkṛtārthamadadatka ivāsti loke doṣeṇa saṃkṣayakareṇa na yujyate yaḥ|| 44 ||

English

Tell these questions to the king or the minister, I will certainly fulfill the purpose of the seeker| Who in the world does not deserve to be blamed for a fault that causes destruction?
