श्रीवसिष्ठ उवाच | एतस्मिन्नन्तरे तत्र किरातजनमण्डले | हस्तहार्यतमःपिण्डा बभूवासितयामिनी || १ ||

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | etasminnantare tatra kirātajanamaṇḍale | hastahāryatamaḥpiṇḍā babhūvāsitayāminī || 1 ||

English

Shrivasishtha said: In the meantime, in that circle of Kirata people, the night became dark as if it could be grasped by hand.

श्रीवसिष्ठ ने कहा: इस बीच, उस किरात जनसमूह में, रात हाथ से पकड़ने योग्य अंधेरी हो गई।

नीलमेघपटच्छन्ना निरिन्दुगगनान्तरा | तमालवनसंपिण्डा मांसलोड्डीनकज्जला || २ ||

nīlameghapaṭacchannā nirindugaganāntarā | tamālavanasampiṇḍā māṃsaloḍḍīnakajjalā || 2 ||

English

Covered by dark clouds, the moonless sky was filled with the dense darkness of the Tamala forest, and the water was thick and murky.

English

Due to the dense creepers, the village interior was filled with darkness. In the city, the courtyards of the houses were crowded with new youth.

English

In the courtyards, the darkness was dense, and the lamps were extinguished. The light from the lamps that escaped through the cracks was faint.

English

Like a young crab, the female ghost danced around. It stood like a silent, intoxicated skeleton of a vetala.

English

The night is deep and silent, with animals asleep and the dense fog enveloping everything. The gentle touch of the breeze brings forth the delightful, pure snowflakes.

saraḥsu vivṭadvāri kākabhekataraṅgitā | antaḥpureṣu ramaṇaraṇannārīnarānanā || 7 ||

English

In the lakes with open gates, the crows and frogs make noise. Inside the palaces, the joyful sounds of men and women resonate.

In the forests, the world is ablaze with the radiant flames of the matted locks. In the fields, the moisture from the dew creates a shimmering effect.

English

In the sky, the movement of the stars is clearly visible. In the forests, the wind scatters flowers and fruits from the trees.

śvabhreṣu kauśikasyāntarvāyasavyāhatāravā | taskarākrāntaparyantagrāmyākrandanakarkaśā || 10 ||

English

In the caves, the sound of the crow's cry echoes. The harsh cries of the villagers extend to the limits of the thieves' reach.

English

In the forest, the forest is silent, in the city, the city is asleep, in the woods, the wind is blowing, and in the nests, the birds are still.

वन में वन शान्त है, नगर में नगर सोया हुआ है, जंगलों में हवा बह रही है, और घोंसलों में पक्षी स्थिर हैं।

गुहासु सुप्तसिंहाढ्या कुञ्जेषु स्वपदेणका | खे सावश्यायनिकरा विपिने मौनचारिणी || १२ ||

guhāsu suptasiṃhāḍhyā kuñjeṣu svapadeṇakā | khe sāvaśyāyanikarā vipine maunacāriṇī || 12 ||

English

In the caves, the lions are asleep, in the bushes, the small animals are sleeping, in the sky, the clouds are resting, and in the forest, silence prevails.

गुफाओं में शेर सो रहे हैं, झाड़ियों में छोटे जानवर सो रहे हैं, आकाश में बादल विश्राम कर रहे हैं, और वन में मौन व्याप्त है।

कज्जलाम्भोदमध्याभा काचशैलोदरोपमा | पङ्कपिण्डान्तरघना खड्गच्छेद्यान्ध्यमांसला || १३ ||

kajjalāmbhodamadhyābhā kācaśailodaropamā | paṅkapinḍāntaraghanā khaḍgacchyāndhyamāṃsalā || 13 ||

English

With the appearance of a cloud in the middle of the sky, resembling the belly of a glass mountain, dense like a lump of mud, cuttable by a sword, and fleshy with darkness.

आकाश के मध्य में बादल के समान दिखाई देता है, कांच के पर्वत के पेट के समान, मिट्टी के ढेर के समान घना, तलवार से काटा जा सकने योग्य, और अंधेरे से मांसल।

प्रलयानिलविक्षुब्धकज्जलाचलचञ्चला | एकार्णवमहापङ्कपर्वतोदरमेदुरा || १४ ||

pralayānilavikṣubdhakajjalācalacañcalā | ekārṇavamahāpaṅkaparvatodaramedurā || 14 ||

English

Agitated by the wind of destruction, the mountain of darkness is trembling, resembling a great lump of mud in the vast ocean.

विनाश की हवा से विचलित, अंधेरे का पर्वत कांप रहा है, विशाल सागर में एक बड़े मिट्टी के ढेर के समान।

अङ्गारकोटरघना सौषुप्तपदसुन्दरी | अज्ञाननिद्रानिबिडा भृङ्गपृष्ठच्छदच्छविः || १५ ||

aṅgārakoṭaraghanā sauṣuptapadasundarī | ajñānanidrānibiḍā bhṛṅgapṛṣṭhacchadacchaviḥ || 15 ||

English

Dense like a cavern of embers, beautiful in the state of deep sleep, thick with the sleep of ignorance, with the color of the wing-case of a beetle.

हिन्दी

यह अंगारों की गुफा के समान घनी, गहरी नींद की अवस्था में सुंदर, अज्ञान की नींद से भरी हुई, भृंग की पीठ के पंख के रंग जैसी है।

तस्यां रजन्यां भीमायां किरातजनमण्डलेमन्त्रिणा सह भूपालस्तस्मिन्नवसरे तदा || १६ ||

tasyāṃ rajanyāṃ bhīmāyāṃ kirātajanamaṇḍalemantriṇā saha bhūpālastasminnavasare tadā || 16 ||

English

In that terrible night, the king, along with his ministers and the Kirata tribe, set out on that occasion.

उस भयानक रात में, राजा अपने मंत्रियों और किरात जनजाति के साथ उस अवसर पर निकला।

निर्जगाम सुधीरात्मा नगरात्सुप्तनागरात् | अटवीं विक्रमो नाम विषमां वीरचर्यया || १७ ||

nirjagāma sudhīrātmā nagarātsuptanāgarāt | aṭavīṃ vikramo nāma viṣamāṃ vīracaryayā || 17 ||

English

The wise-minded king emerged from the sleeping city and entered the dangerous forest named Vikrama, with the valor of a hero.

हिन्दी

बुद्धिमान राजा सोई हुई नगर से निकला और वीरतापूर्वक विक्रम नामक खतरनाक जंगल में प्रवेश किया।

अटव्यां कर्कटी सा तौ चरन्तौ राजमन्त्रिणौ अपश्यद्धृतधैर्यास्त्रौ वेतालालोकनोन्मुखौ || १८ ||

aṭavyāṃ karkaṭī sā tau carantau rājamantriṇauapaśyaddhṛtadhairyāstrau vetālālokanonmukhau || 18 ||

English

In the forest, a crab saw the king and his minister, who were wandering with steadfast courage, facing the ghost.

हिन्दी

वन में, एक केकड़ा ने राजा और उसके मंत्री को देखा, जो दृढ़ साहस के साथ भटक रहे थे, भूत का सामना करते हुए।

अथ सा चिन्तयामास लब्धो भक्षो ह्यहो मया | मूढावेतावनात्मज्ञौ भारो देहः किलानयोः || १९ ||

atha sā cintayāmāsa labdho bhakṣo hyaho mayā | mūḍhāvetāvanātmajñau bhāro dehaḥ kilānayoḥ || 19 ||

English

Then she thought, 'I have found food, alas! These two are foolish, not knowing the self, the body is a burden for them.'

हिन्दी

तब उसने सोचा, 'मैंने भोजन पा लिया, हाय! ये दोनों मूर्ख हैं, आत्मज्ञान से रहित, शरीर इनके लिए बोझ है।'

इहामुत्र च नाशाय मूढो दुःखाय जीवति | यत्नाद्विनाशनीयोऽसौ नानर्थः परिपाल्यते || २० ||

ihāmutra ca nāśāya mūḍho duḥkhāya jīvati | yatnādvināśanīyo'sau nānarthaḥ paripālyate || 20 ||

English

The foolish one lives for destruction here and in the hereafter, for suffering. He should be destroyed with effort, not preserved for no purpose.

हिन्दी

मूर्ख व्यक्ति इस लोक और परलोक में विनाश और दुःख के लिए जीता है। उसे प्रयास से नष्ट कर देना चाहिए, बेकार की रक्षा नहीं करनी चाहिए।

अपश्यतः स्वमात्मानं मृतिर्मूढस्य जीवितम् | मरणेनोदयोऽस्यास्ति पापासंपत्तिहेतुतः || २१ ||

apashyataḥ svamātmānaṃ mṛtirmūḍhasya jīvitam | maraṇenodayo'syāsti pāpāsaṃpattithetutaḥ || 21 ||

English

For the ignorant who does not see his own self, death is life. His rise is due to death, which is the cause of sinful consequences.

हिन्दी

जो अपने आत्मा को नहीं देखता, उस मूढ़ के लिए मृत्यु ही जीवन है | उसका उदय मरण से होता है, जो पाप के परिणाम का कारण है ||

आदिसर्गे च नियमः कृतः पङ्कजजन्मना | हिंस्राणां भोजनायास्तु मूढात्मानात्मवानिति || २२ ||

ādisarge ca niyamaḥ kṛtaḥ paṅkajajanmanā | hiṃsrāṇāṃ bhojanāyāstu mūḍhātmānātmavāniti || 22 ||

English

In the beginning of creation, a rule was made by Brahma that the ignorant, who are violent, are meant for the food of others.

आदि सृष्टि में ब्रह्मा ने एक नियम बनाया था कि हिंसक मूढ़ लोग दूसरों के भोजन के लिए हैं ||

तस्मादिमौ मयैवाद्य भोक्तव्यौ भोज्यतां गतौ | अभव्य एव निर्दोषं प्राप्तमर्थमुपेक्षते || २३ ||

tasmādimau mayaivādya bhoktavyau bhojyatāṃ gatau | abhavya eva nirdoṣaṃ prāptamarthamupekṣate || 23 ||

English

Therefore, these two should be eaten by me today, as they have become food. The unworthy one indeed neglects the attained faultless goal.

kadācittāvimau syātāṃ guṇayuktau mahāśayau | tādṛṅna ravināśo hi svabhāvānme na rocate || 24 ||

English

Perhaps these two will become virtuous and wise someday. But such a transformation is not in their nature, and I do not like it.

शायद कभी ये दोनों गुणवान और महान बन जाएँ | परन्तु ऐसा परिवर्तन उनके स्वभाव में नहीं है, और मुझे यह पसंद नहीं है ||

तदेतौ संपरीक्षेऽहं यदि तादृग्गुणान्वितौ | तद्भक्षं न करोम्येतौ न हिंस्या गुणिनः क्वचित् || २५ ||

tadetau saṃparīkṣe'haṃ yadi tādṛgguṇānvitau | tadbhakṣaṃ na karomyetau na hiṃsyā guṇinaḥ kvacit || 25 ||

English

Therefore, I will examine these two. If they possess such virtuous qualities, I will not eat them. I will not harm the virtuous anywhere.

हिन्दी

इसलिए, मैं इन दोनों की परीक्षा करूँगा | यदि ये ऐसे गुणों से युक्त हैं, तो मैं इन्हें नहीं खाऊँगा | मैं कहीं भी गुणी को हानि नहीं पहुँचाऊँगा ||

अकृत्रिमं सुखं कीर्तिमायुश्चैवाभिवाञ्छता | सर्वाभिमतदानेन पूजनीया गुणान्विताः || २६ ||

akṛtrimam sukham kīrtimāyuścaivābhivāñchatā | sarvābhimatadānena pūjanīyā guṇānvitāḥ || 26 ||

English

Those who desire natural happiness, fame, and long life should be worshipped by fulfilling all their wishes, as they are endowed with virtues.

हिन्दी

जो लोग प्राकृतिक सुख, कीर्ति और दीर्घ आयु चाहते हैं, उन्हें सभी इच्छाओं की पूर्ति करके पूजनीय माना जाना चाहिए, क्योंकि वे गुणों से युक्त हैं।

अपि नङ्क्ष्यामि देहेन नैव भोक्ष्ये गुणान्वितम् | सुखयन्ति हि चेतांसि जीवितादपि साधवः || २७ ||

api naṅkṣyāmi dehena naiva bhokṣye guṇānvitam | sukhayanti hi cetāṃsi jīvitādapi sādhavḥ || 27 ||

English

Even if I have to give up my body, I will not enjoy the virtuous. Indeed, the virtuous bring happiness to the mind, even more than life itself.

यदि मुझे अपने शरीर को त्यागना पड़े तो भी, मैं गुणवान का आनंद नहीं लूँगा। निश्चित रूप से, गुणवान मन को सुख देते हैं, जीवन से भी अधिक।

अपि जीवितदानेन गुणिनं परिपालयेत् | गुणवत्संगमौषध्या मृत्युरप्येति मित्रताम् || २८ ||

api jīvitadānena guṇinam paripālayet | guṇavatsaṃgamauṣadhyā mṛtyurapyeti mitratām || 28 ||

English

Even by giving one's life, one should protect the virtuous. Through the medicine of association with the virtuous, even death becomes a friend.

अपने जीवन को देकर भी, एक व्यक्ति को गुणवान की रक्षा करनी चाहिए। गुणवान के संग की दवा से, मृत्यु भी मित्र बन जाती है।

यत्राहमपि रक्षामि राक्षसी गुणशालिनम् | तत्रान्यः को न कुर्यात्तं हृदि हारमिवामलम् || २९ ||

yatrāhamapi rakṣāmi rākṣasī guṇaśālinam | tatrānyaḥ ko na kuryāttaṃ hṛdi hāramivāmalam || 29 ||

English

Where even I, a demoness, protect the virtuous, who else would not do the same, cherishing them in their heart like a pure necklace?

हिन्दी

जहाँ मैं, एक राक्षसी, गुणवान की रक्षा करती हूँ, वहाँ और कौन ऐसा नहीं करेगा, उन्हें अपने हृदय में एक शुद्ध हार की तरह पोषित करते हुए?

उदारगुणयुक्ता ये विहरन्तीह देहिनः | धरातलेन्दवः सङ्गाद्भृशं शीतलयन्ति ते || ३० ||

udāraguṇayuktā ye viharantīha dehinḥ | dharātalendavaḥ saṅgādbhṛśaṃ śītalayanti te || 30 ||

English

Those who are endowed with noble qualities and dwell in this world, they, like the moon on earth, greatly cool the minds of others through their association.

मृतिर्गुणितिरस्कारो जीवितं गुणिसंश्रयः | फलं स्वर्गापवर्गादि जीविताद्गुणिसंश्रितात् || ३१ ||

mṛtirguṇitiraskāro jīvitaṃ guṇisaṃśrayaḥ | phalaṃ svargāpavargādi jīvitādguṇisaṃśritāt || 31 ||

English

Death is the rejection of qualities, life is the association with qualities | The result is heaven, liberation, etc., from life associated with qualities

मृत्यु गुणों का त्याग है, जीवन गुणों का आश्रय है | फल स्वर्ग, मोक्ष आदि जीवन से है जो गुणों से संबंधित है

तस्मादिमौ परीक्षेऽहं कयाचित्प्रश्नलीलया | किंमात्रज्ञानकावेताविति तामरसेक्षणौ || ३२ ||

tasmādimau parīkṣe'haṃ kayācitpraśnalīlayā | kiṃmātrajñānakāvetāviti tāmarasekṣaṇau || 32 ||

English

Therefore, I will examine these two with some questioning play | Are they merely knowledgeable or not, with lotus-like eyes

ādau vicārya saguṇāguṇaleśayuktiṃ paścātsvato'dhikataraṃ ca guṇairyadi syāt | kuryāttataḥ samupapattivaśena daṇḍaṃ daḍyasya yuktisadṛśaṃ ghanasaṃbhavena || 33 ||

English
