13.70.1

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | atha bhūdharaśṛṅgābhā sā mahākṛṣṇarākṣasī | kajjalāmbudalekheva tānavam gantumudyatā || 1 ||

Vasishtha said: Then that huge black demoness, who looked like a mountain peak, began to grow thin, like a streak of soot-dark cloud.

babhūvābhropamākārā tato viṭaparūpiṇī | puṃspramāṇā tato'pyāsīdathābhūddhastamātrīkā || 2 ||

She became shaped like a cloud, then like a tree, then the size of a man, then she became only as big as a hand.

tataḥ prādeśamātrā sā tato'pyaṅgulirūpiṇī | tato māṣaśamītulyā tataḥ sūcī babhūva ha || 3 ||

Then she shrank to the length of a span, then to the size of a finger, then to the size of a small bean, and then she became a needle.

tataḥ kauśeyasūcitvaṃ padmakesarasundarī | prāpa sā śikharākārā saṃkalpādririvāṇutām || 4 ||

Then she became as fine as a needle for silk, delicate and beautiful like the thread inside a lotus flower. She who once had the shape of a mountain peak had now become as small as an atom, like a mountain built only in thought shrinking away.

rarāja sūcikā kṛṣṇā sūkṣmāyasamanāyasī | puryaṣṭakena calitā vyomagā vyomavāsinī || 5 ||

That black needle shone brightly, fine like iron yet not really iron, moving along with the subtle body of eight parts, traveling through the sky, living in the sky.

sūcī dṛśyata evāsau natvayo nāma vidyatesaṃvidbhramakule caiṣā svalpasūcīva lakṣyate || 6 ||

This needle could be seen, yet it was not really made of iron at all. Within the whirl of confused awareness, she only appeared to be a tiny needle.

ratnasūcīva masṛṇā manomananasaṃyutāvaidūryaraśmilekheva bhānusaṃtānasundarī || 7 ||

Smooth like a needle made of gem, bound up with mind and thought, beautiful like a ray of cat's-eye light, lovely as an unbroken stream of sunshine.

83.70.8

kajjalāmbhodasaṃkalkalateva pavanāhṛtāsūkṣmarandhrekṣaṇasvacchadṛṣṭajyotiḥkanīnikā || 8 ||

Like a thin streak of paste made from black cloud-soot, carried along by the wind, she looked like the shining pupil of an eye, seen clearly through a tiny, fine opening.

sumukhagrāhyarūpeṇa ślakṣṇapucchaśikhāṇunātadā vaipulyaśāntyarthaṃ paraṃ maunavrataṃ gatā || 9 ||

With a shape pleasant to look at, and a smooth, tiny tapering tail, she then took up a vow of complete silence, so that her old vastness could finally be stilled.

sudūrāddīpavadṛṣṭaṃ khatanmātratvamāgatādūrādeva manojñena prodgirantī mukhena kham || 10 ||

Seen from far off, she looked like a small lamp. She had become almost nothing but empty space, and from far away, through her charming mouth, she seemed to breathe out space itself.

113.70.11

kuñcitekṣaṇasaṃdṛśyā dīrghadīpāṃśukomalāsadyaḥsnātasamutsannabālavālavilāsinī || 11 ||

She could be seen only by narrowing the eyes, soft like the long glow of a lamp's flame, delicate as a fine young hair standing up just after a bath.

tanturbisādivoḍḍīnā bāhyasaṃcārakautukāt | brahmanāḍirivodyuktā bahīrandhraṃ susundarī || 12 ||

Like a lotus fiber lifted into the air, she rose up out of eagerness to move outward, beautiful, rising like the body's central channel, toward the outer opening.

niyatendriyaśaktiḥ sā jīvenaiva bahiḥsthitā | bauddhatārkikavijñānasantānavadalakṣitā || 13 ||

Holding within her the fixed power of all the senses, she stood outside through the life-force alone, as unnoticeable as the flowing stream of momentary awareness that the Buddhist logicians speak of.

śūnyasiddhārthasavikā randhrānīlamayā'ravā | adṛśyayā jīvasūcyā saṃtatānusṛtā sthitā || 14 ||

Made of emptiness itself, tinged with the blue of the tiny opening, silent and soundless, she remained there, continuously following along as the invisible needle of life.

153.70.15

kalākalanadharmiṇyā vāsanāmātrasārayā | kṣīṇadīpāṃśusūcīvattīkṣṇayānupalabhyayā || 15 ||

By nature she kept track of every passing moment, her only substance being pure latent impression. Sharp like the thin ray of a dying lamp's flame, yet impossible to grasp or perceive.

grāsārthaṃ sūcitāṃ yātā saivāsthā nopayujyatevicāritaṃ tayā naitadaho maurkhyavijṛmbhitam || 16 ||

She had shrunk herself into a needle just to get a mouthful of food, yet that very effort was useless. She never stopped to think about this. What a display of sheer foolishness!

sāgrā saṃcintayāmāsa na sūcīrūpatucchatāmcittamīhitamevaikaṃ paśyantyāste nirarthakam || 17 ||

Fully absorbed, she never once considered how trivial it was to become a mere needle. Seeing only the one thing her mind craved, she stayed caught up in something utterly pointless.

avicāryaiva sūcitvaṃ tayā mūḍhadhiyā''sthitamnānarthabuddheḥ sphurati pūrvāparavicāraṇā || 18 ||

Without thinking at all, her deluded mind settled into being a needle. When the intellect is bent on something harmful, it never pauses to consider the consequences, before or after.

svārthakriyograsāmarthyādyāti bhāvanayānyatāmpadārtho'bhimatāṃśāḍhyo niḥśvāseneva darpaṇaḥ || 19 ||

Because of the fierce urge to get what it wants, a thing that is full of what it desires can turn into something else through mere imagination alone, like a mirror clouded over by a single breath.

sūcībhāvaṃ prapannāyāstyajantyāḥ pīvaraṃ vapuḥmahāmaraṇamapyasyā rākṣasyāḥ susukhaṃ sthitam || 20 ||

Having become a needle, giving up her huge, fat body, even this great death of the demoness felt completely comfortable to her.

ekavastvatirāgāṇāmaho nu viṣamā gatiḥ| deho'pi tṛṇavattyakto rākṣasyā nijayecchayā || 21 ||

How strange and dangerous is the fate of those who cling too much to just one single thing! This demoness, of her own will, threw away even her own body as if it were a blade of grass.

ekavastvatigandhena bhrasyantyanyā hi saṃvidaḥ| rākṣasyā grāsagandhena dehanāśo'pi nekṣitaḥ || 22 ||

When the craving for just one thing grows too strong, all other awareness falls away. Because this demoness was so fixed on the smell of her food, she did not even notice her own body being destroyed.

nāśo'pi sukhayatyajñamekavastvatirāgiṇam| sūcībhūtā videhāpi parituṣṭaiva rākṣasī || 23 ||

For an ignorant person obsessed with one single thing, even his own destruction feels pleasant. Having become a needle, and now without a body at all, the demoness remained completely content.

anyā vabhūva lagnā sā tathā jīvaviṣūcikā| vyomātmikā nirākārā vyomavṛttiśarīrakā || 24 ||

Then she became joined to another, becoming, as it were, a needle of life itself, made of pure space, without any form, her body nothing but movement through the sky.

253.70.25

tejastanupravāhābhā prāṇatantumayātmikā| mūlasaṃvedanākārā candrārkāṃśukasundarī || 25 ||

She looked like a flowing stream of subtle light, her being woven from threads of life-breath, shaped like the most basic form of feeling, and beautiful, as if wrapped in a garment made of the rays of the moon and the sun.

pṛthagevāsidhārābhā paramāṇvavalīya sā | kausumī gandhalekheva kalā kalanarūpiṇī || 26 ||

By herself she looked as thin as the edge of a sword's blade, merged into something as small as an atom; like a mere streak of a flower's fragrance, she was a tiny fraction, a form made only of the act of sensing.

pāpātmikā manovṛttiḥ so hi tasyāstathā sthitā | paraprāṇavaśādeva paramārthaparāyaṇā || 27 ||

This evil turn of mind was hers, and it stayed with her just so; entirely under the control of another's life-breath, it alone was her true purpose.

evamasyaḥstanurjātā sūcīdvayamayī hi sā | nīhārāṃśukavattanvī kārpāsāṃśusupelavā || 28 ||

In this way her body was formed, made of a pair of needles; slender like a garment of mist, and soft as fine threads of cotton.

tanudvayena tenāsau praviśya hṛdayaṃ nṛṇām | vedhayantī tataḥ krūrā prababhrāma diśo daśa || 29 ||

With that pair of bodies she entered the hearts of men, and, cruel, pierced them; then she wandered through the ten directions.

sarvaḥ svasaṃkalpavaśāllaghurbhavati vā guruḥ | karkaṭyograṃ vapustyaktvā sūcītvamurarīkṛtam || 30 ||

Everyone becomes light or heavy according to their own will; having left behind the fierce body of a crab, she took up the state of a needle.

tuccho'pyartho'lpasattvānāṃ gacchati prārthanīyatām| sūcīvṛttapiśācītvaṃ rākṣasyā tapasā sthitam || 31 ||

Even a trivial thing becomes desirable to those of little worth; through her austerity the demoness reached the state of a needle-shaped imp.

api puṇyaśarīrāṇāṃ jātibandho na śāmyati| tanusūcīpiśācītvaṃ rākṣasyā tapasārjitam || 32 ||

Even for those with virtuous bodies, the bond of birth does not end; through her austerity the demoness earned the state of a slender-needle imp.

tasyāṃ digantabhramaṇe pravṛttāyāṃ mahānilaiḥ| tatraiva sā tanuḥ sthūlā galitā śaradabhravat || 33 ||

While she was wandering to the far ends of the directions, driven by great winds, right there her thick body melted away, like an autumn cloud.

kasyacidvivasaṅgasya kṣīṇasya vipulasya ca| praviśyāntarvātasūcirbhavatyativiṣūcikā || 34 ||

Entering someone whose limbs have gone helpless, whether that person is thin or heavy, she becomes, once inside, a needle in the wind, an intense epidemic.

kasyacittanudehasya svasthasya sudhiyo'pi vā| praviśya jīvasūcitve bhavatyantarviṣūcikā || 35 ||

Entering someone with a slight body, whether healthy or even wise, she becomes, in the form of a life-needle, an epidemic inside them.

evaṃ kvacittṛpyati sā durbuddhihṛdayāsthitākvaciducchedyate puṇyairmantrauṣadhitapaḥkramaiḥ || 36 ||

In this way she is sometimes satisfied, lodged in the heart of someone of evil mind; and sometimes she is cut off by merit, by mantras, medicines, and courses of austerity.

āsīdbahūni varṣāṇi bhramaṇaikaparāyaṇādehadvayena gacchantī vyomni bhūmitale tathā || 37 ||

For many years she remained wholly given to wandering, moving with her two bodies, both in the sky and on the surface of the earth.

rajastirohitā bhūmau haste'ṅgulitirohitāprabhātirohitā vyomni vastre sūtratirohitā || 38 ||

On the ground she is hidden in dust, on a hand she is hidden between the fingers, in the sky she is hidden in a glow of light, in cloth she is hidden as a thread.

antaḥsthasnāyusariti durbhage pāṃśupāṇḍureśuṣkarekhāsaritkhāte sūkṣmarekhājarattṛṇe || 39 ||

She hides in a vein that runs like a stream inside the body, in an unlucky spot, in pale dust, in a dry streak of a dried-up riverbed, in a fine crack, in an old blade of grass.

arthahīne gatacchāye śūnyā ucchvāsakāriṇīmakṣikāvātaharite śrīvṛkṣaparivarjite || 40 ||

In something worthless, in a place without shade, in an empty spot that makes one sigh, in a place gone green with flies and wind, in a spot without any lovely tree.

sthūlāsthigranthivalite nityakampasphurattameanātmīyācchanīhāre'śuddhāṃśukakṛtabhrame || 41 ||

In a spot gnarled with a thick bony joint, in an ever-trembling, flickering darkness, in a clear frost that belongs to no one, in the confusion caused by a soiled garment.

kiṇasthāṇvaṅgaviśrāntamakṣikāpikavāyaseraukṣarūḍharasadvāte vilolāṅguliśākhini || 42 ||

On a crow or a cuckoo, in the numb, callused limb where a fly comes to rest, in a breeze thick with a bull's rising sweat, on a tree whose branches sway restlessly like fingers.

mālābhralekhāsaṃsāre svāṅgulivraṇagartakespandāvaśyāyapṛṣati padavalmīkaparvate || 43 ||

In a garland-like streak of cloud stretched across the sky, in the small hollow of a wound on one's own finger, in a trembling drop of dew, in a footprint, an anthill, or a mountain.

kacatyāśu jalabhrāntau nakhājagarakarkaśekvācitkavisaradbhītabhītayūkakupānthake || 44 ||

She flashes quickly in a swirl of water, in a fingernail rough as a python's hide, and now and then in the frightened, darting path of a louse on some wretched traveler.

virūpāśuṣkasaṃdaṣṭavīṭikāpūtipalvalemadhyasthalekhamārgaughaśītaśvasanagocare || 45 ||

In a foul puddle with a misshapen, half-dried, chewed betel roll lying in it, and in the reach of a cold breath moving along a line down the middle of a path.

463.70.46

grastayūkānaraughāsṛkpūrṇasṛkkinakhāsyatāmdadhatāṅguṣṭhapakṣeṇa krānte sarvatra yāyinī || 46 ||

Taking the form of the blood-filled corner of the mouth, the nail, and the mouth itself, among crowds of men plagued by lice, she goes everywhere, moving within the span of a thumb.

473.70.47

nānāviracanācitrapaṭapattanagāminīgamāgamapariśrāntā tatrātyantacirādhvagā || 47 ||

Moving through a city painted in many varied designs on cloth, worn out by constant coming and going, there she was a traveler on an extremely long road.

nagarānagare vyastasūtrabhāṇḍaikabhāriṇītapte kalevarāraṇye balīvardāpavartinī || 48 ||

In city and in wilderness alike, carrying alone the load of scattered thread and goods, in a scorching forest of corpses, she turned aside like a bullock leaving its path.

guptā viśramaṇāyaiva manākkaraparicyutātantuprotā mukhākṛṣṭiḥ khinnā kvāpi vilīyate || 49 ||

Hidden away only to rest a little, slipping a bit from the hand, threaded with a thread, drawn along by its point, tired, it disappears somewhere.

vedhanaṃ karmasaṃśliṣṭā kaṭhināpi na sākarotna hi tīkṣṇo bahiḥ kāryo nijatvaṃ vijahāti cet || 50 ||

Bound to the work of piercing, hard though she was, she did not do it on her own — for a thing that is sharp only on the outside does not, when put to work, give up its own nature.

sāyaḥsūcī manaḥsūcyā valitā vijahāra ha | dikṣvāśeva śilāgurvī nāvāṅgapalitā satī || 51 ||

The iron needle, turned about by the needle of the mind, wandered off, heavy as a stone, like a longing reaching into every direction, its body not yet grown grey.

visasāra diganteṣu sāntaḥkaraṇasattayā | tuṣalekheva pavanaśaktyā saṃsṛtirūpayā || 52 ||

With her inner mind still present in her, she spread out to the ends of every direction, like a flake of husk carried by the force of the wind, taking the very shape of endless wandering.

mukhena sūkṣmasūtrāntaṃ carantīva parombitam | parapūrodyamenāśu jāteva hṛdayānvitā || 53 ||

Moving with her tip along the fine end of the thread as if it were woven by another, through the quick effort to fill another, she seemed as if just born, now possessed of a heart.

parapūrarasenaiava sūcyā hṛtsuvikāsitam | anāratapatatsūkṣmasūtrānta iva stambhitā || 54 ||

By the very pleasure of filling another, the needle's heart was made to open wide; then, like the end of a fine thread that keeps constantly falling, she was brought to a standstill.

tīkṣṇairapi cirakṣīṇaṃ pūryate nirvicāraṇādṛṣṭānto'tra kṣaṇātsūcyā pūrito jarjaraḥ paṭaḥ || 55 ||

Even sharp things fill up what has long been worn thin, without a thought — here is the example: in an instant a tattered cloth is mended by a needle.

sūtrāṃśunirgame yogyam sūcyā hṛdayamarjitam | parapūraṇayaivāśu tejaśca kavitārkaruk || 56 ||

Fit for letting the thread's strand pass through, the needle's core was won; and simply by the swift act of filling another, she gained brightness too — a glow like the sun of poetry.

akasmāttena rūḍhena kṣīṇapūreṇa rūpiṇī | hṛdaye rākṣasī sūciḥ karmaṇā tapyate ca sā || 57 ||

Suddenly, through that habit grown firm in her, worn thin and hollow, the needle — a demoness at heart in her very form — suffers because of that same act.

vedhaṃ pūrarayeṇeva karoti svaṃ pracāritā | prakṛtena nijenāpi vedhāya vyavahāritā || 58 ||

Set moving on her own, she does the piercing as if by the rush of filling; and even by her own nature she is put to use for piercing.

saṃcārayati vastrēṣu sūtraṃ caturavedhanāt | ādīrghavāsanātantuḥ śarīrēṣviva cetanām || 59 ||

Through clever piercing she moves the thread through the cloths, just as a long-stretched thread of habit carries consciousness through bodies.

saṃcāryamāṇavedhena dhāvantīvākṣipātane | adarśitamukhā eva durjanā marma vedhinaḥ || 60 ||

Made to move by the piercing, she seems to run as her point falls; just so, wicked people who wound the heart never show their true face.

kaṇṭhavastradalaprotā vedhākṣṇā mukhamīkṣate | kathametā bhinadmīti tīkṣṇānāmetadīpsitam || 61 ||

Strung through a piece of cloth at the neck, she looks at its face with her piercing edge, as if to say, how shall I split this open — this is exactly what sharp things want.

samameva ca kauśeye kṣaume ca vasane sṛtā | jaḍaḥ ka iva vā nāma guṇāguṇamapekṣate || 62 ||

She moves the same way whether the cloth is silk or linen — after all, what fool ever bothers about whether a thing has good qualities or bad?

sā dadhānā tataṃ sūtram aṅguṣṭhāṅgulipīḍitā | āntratantum ivāmāntam udgirantī nirīkṣate || 63 ||

Holding the stretched thread, pressed between thumb and finger, she looks on as if she were spewing out a raw, undigested strand of gut.

tīkṣṇāpy ahṛdayatvena saraseṣvaraseṣv avit | sūtritāpi padārtheṣu viśaty arasagāminī || 64 ||

Though sharp, being heartless she does not know a lively thing from a dull one; even when strung with thread, she goes into things without any feeling, indifferent to what she enters.

agardatī mukhaprotā sutīkṣṇāpi ca tāpidhīḥsuvedhitāpyahṛdayā rājaputryāpi durbhagā || 65 ||

Silent, strung at her tip, very sharp yet burning within, well pierced yet heartless — fine as a king's daughter, and yet unlucky.

vinā parāpakāreṇa tīkṣṇā maraṇamīhate | vedanādrodhitā sūcī karmapāśe pralambate || 66 ||

Without ever harming anyone else, sharp as she is, she seeks her own death; held back by pain, the needle hangs there caught in the snare of her own action.

śete kiṃśyāmamaitryeva dūre karaparicyutā | svarūpasadṛśaṃ mitraṃ kasmai nāma na rocate || 67 ||

Fallen far from the hand, she lies there like a friendship with someone dark and unclear — and after all, who does not like a friend that matches his own nature?

miśritā mūḍhacittānāṃ vṛttibhiḥ prākṛte jane | tiṣṭhatyātmasamāṃ ko hi saṃgatiṃ tyaktumicchati || 68 ||

Mixed in among the ways of foolish minds, she stays among common people — for who indeed wants to give up company that matches his own nature?

693.70.69

bhavatyayaskāravittau saṃtyajyāntardhigāminī | bhastrāvātairvicalitā gaganādutpatonmukhī || 69 ||

She comes to be in the blacksmith's keeping, then leaves it and goes into hiding; stirred by the blasts of the bellows, she is set to fly up into the air.

703.70.70

prāṇāpānapravāhasthahṛtpadmāntaracāriṇī | duḥkhaśaktirmahāghorā jīvaśaktirivoditā || 70 ||

Moving within the lotus of the heart, where the flow of the in-breath and out-breath abide, she rises up like a terrible, great power of suffering — like the very power of life itself.

713.70.71

samānavaiaprītyena samānasamagāminī | udānaviparītatvādudānasamagāminī || 71 ||

By going against the samāna breath, she still moves along with the samāna breath; by being the reverse of the udāna breath, she still moves along with the udāna breath.

vyānasthā vyādhijananī sarvāṅgarasacāriṇī | hṛtkaṇṭhe śūlapavane vaivarṇyonmādakāriṇī || 72 ||

Seated in the vyāna breath, she gives birth to disease, moving through the sap of every limb; in the heart and throat, amid piercing pain and wind, she brings on paleness and madness.

prāyaśo'vikahastasthā suptorṇā gandhakoṭare | bālahastāṅgulītalpavedhanaiakavilāsinī || 73 ||

Usually it stays in the hand of someone who works with wool, sleeping inside the wool, kept in a sweet-smelling box. Its one delight is to prick through the soft place at the tip of a child's finger.

pādapraviṣṭā rudhirapānopārjanavismitā | tuṣyatyatitarāṃ gucchabhojanā tucchabhojanaiḥ || 74 ||

It goes into the foot and seems amazed that it has earned a taste of blood. It is very pleased, even though its food is only a scrap of thread - a small meal is enough to satisfy it completely.

śete kardamakośasthā cirakālamadhomukhī | icchānurūpamāsādya ka ivāspadamujjhati || 75 ||

It lies for a long time face down, buried inside a lump of mud. Once it finds a place it likes, who would want to leave such a spot?

krauryeṇāpahatātmānaṃ darśayatyupavedhanaiḥutsavādapi nīcānāṃ kalaho'pi sukhāyate || 76 ||

By its cruelty it shows a being crushed, pricking it again and again. Even for mean-spirited people, a quarrel feels more pleasant than a festival.

kapardakārdhalābhena kṛpaṇo bahu manyatedurucchedā hi bhūtānāmahaṃkāracamatkṛtiḥ || 77 ||

A miser thinks himself very great when he gains even half a small shell coin. The strange power of pride in living beings is very hard to root out.

sūcikāyugmalabhyena mohitenātmanā nṛṇāmmṛtimāśaṅkate citrā svārthe nodeti mūḍhatā || 78 ||

With his mind fooled by the gain of just a pair of needles, a man comes to fear even death over it. It is strange - a person's own foolishness never seems to show itself to him in matters that touch his own interest.

vastratantuvibhedena paramāraṇamāśu meidaṃ saṃpadyata iti bhavatyantarhi nirmalā || 79 ||

By splitting the thread of the cloth, it seems to think, this is quickly wearing me out completely - and yet, inside, it stays clean and unmarked.

sthāpitā malamādatte yathā mṛddharṣaṇaṃ vināparāparādhavirahādvyādhistasyāḥ pravartate || 80 ||

When it is left lying unused, it gathers rust, the way clay wastes away even without being rubbed. Without any further wrongdoing on its part, its own sickness still sets in.

It is fine and cannot be seen, yet it gives pain freely, and in a moment it is forgotten. Sharp, wounding, cruel - the needle acts as if moved by fate.

tantuve dhanamātreṇa hato'nya iti toṣitā | durjano yena tenaiva nāśitenaiti hṛṣṭatām || 82 ||

Merely by piercing a thread, it is pleased, thinking it has killed another. In the same way, a wicked person feels glad at whatever destruction he causes, however small.

It sinks into mud, it rises into the sky, it wanders with the winds of the open air. It lies in the dust at the edge of every direction as if on bare ground; it is found in a forest, in silk cloth, in a house, in the inner rooms of a palace. It rests in a hand, in the soft lobe of an ear, in a soft scrap of wool of its own choosing, and it fits into a small hole in wood or in clay - and it even fits into the heart. All this it does simply because it is a physical thing, by the very nature of matter.

Sri Valmiki said, when the sage had finished speaking like this, the day went by. The sun went toward its setting, to carry out the evening rite. The assembly, having paid its respects, went to bathe. As the darkness of dusk grew, the day departed together with the rays of the sun.
