śrīrāma uvāca | manastvayogyo jīvo'yaṃ ko bhavetparamātmanaḥ | kathaṃ vāsmin samutpannaḥ ko vāyaṃ vada me punaḥ || 1 ||

English

Sri Rama said: Who is this living being suitable for the mind of the Supreme Self? How did it arise in it, and who am I? Tell me again.

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | samastśaktikha citam brahma sarveśvaraṃ sadā | yayaiva śaktyā sphurati prāptāṃ tāmeva paśyati || 2 ||

English

Vasishtha said: Brahman, the all-powerful, conscious, and eternal Lord, shines by its own power and perceives the same power it has attained.

svayaṃ yāṃ vetti sarvātmā ciraṃ cetanarūpiṇīm | sā proktā jīvaśabdena saiva saṃkalpakāriṇī || 3 ||

English

The Supreme Self knows itself as the eternal, conscious form. This is called the individual self (jīva), which is the same as the one who makes resolutions.

svabhāvātkāraṇaṃ dvitvaṃ pūrvasaṃkalpacitsvayam | nānākāraṇatāṃ paścādyāti janmamṛtisthiteḥ || 4 ||

English

Due to its nature, the cause of duality is the previous resolution itself. Later, it attains various causes due to the states of birth and death.

śrīrāma uvāca | evaṃ sthite muniśreṣṭha daivaṃ nāma kimucyate | kimucyate tathā karma kāraṇaṃ ca kimucyate || 5 ||

English

Sri Rama said: O best of sages, in this context, what is called destiny? What is called action? And what is called the cause?

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | spandāspandasvabhāvaṃ hi cinmātramih vidyate | khe vāta iva tatspandātsollāsaṃ śāntamanyathā || 6 ||

English

Sri Vasistha said: Here, only the nature of movement and stillness exists as pure consciousness. Just as the wind in the sky, from that movement, there is manifestation; otherwise, it is calm.

cittvaṃ cittaṃ bhāvitaṃ satsvanda ityucyate budhaiḥ | dṛśyatvabhāvitaṃ caitadaspandanamiti smṛtam || 7 ||

English

The self, which is pure consciousness, is called 'satsvanda' by the wise. That which is perceived as an object is known as 'aspandanam'.

spandātsphurati cittsargo niḥspandādbrahma śāśvatam | jīvakāraṇakarmādyā cittspandasyābhidhā smṛtā || 8 ||

English

From movement, the creation of consciousness arises. From stillness, the eternal Brahman is known. The causes, actions, and initial states of consciousness are known as the designations of movement.

ya evānubhavātmāyaṃ cittspando'sti sa eva hi | jīvakāraṇakarmākhyo bījametaddhi saṃsṛteḥ || 9 ||

English

This very experience of the self is the movement of consciousness. It is indeed the cause, action, and seed of transmigration.

kṛtadvitvacidābhāsavaśāddehamupasthitam | saṃkalpādvividhārthatvaṃ cittspando yāti sṛṣṭiṣu || 10 ||

English

Due to the illusion of duality, the body appears. From intention, the diverse nature of objects arises, and the movement of consciousness goes into creation.

nānākāraṇatāṃ yātaścitsapndo mucyate cirāt | kaścijanmasahasreṇa kaścidekena janmanā || 11 ||

English

The vibration of consciousness, having attained various causes, is liberated after a long time. Some are liberated after thousands of births, some after a single birth.

svabhāvātkāraṇādvitvaṃ citsametyādhigacchati | svargāpavarganarakabandhakāraṇatāṃ śanaiḥ || 12 ||

English

From its own nature and cause, consciousness attains duality and gradually realizes the causes of heaven, liberation, and hell.

hemnīva kaṭakāditvaṃ kāṣṭhaloṣṭasamasthitau | dehe tiṣṭhati nānātvaṃ jaḍe bhāvavikārajam || 13 ||

English

Just as gold exists in the form of ornaments, wood and clod exist in the same state. In the body, various forms exist due to the modifications of the elements.

ajātamapyasadrūpaṃ paśyatīdaṃ manobhramaḥ | jātaḥ sthitomṛto'smīti bhramārtaḥ pattanaṃ yathā || 14 ||

English

The deluded mind sees the unborn as having the form of the unreal. Like one confused thinking, 'I am born, I exist, I will die,' it wanders aimlessly.

ahaṃmametyasadrūpameva cetaḥ prapaśyati | adṛṣṭaparamārthatvādāśāvivasaṃsthiti || 15 ||

English

The mind sees the ego as unreal. Due to the unseen ultimate reality, it remains in a state of helpless hope.

mathurādhipate rājño yathā śvapacasaṃbhraamaḥ | āsīdevaṃ hi cittasya sphuratīyaṃ jagatsthitiḥ || 16 ||

English

Just as the confusion of the dog-eater (outcaste) arose in the mind of the king of Mathura, so does the existence of the world appear in the mind.

sarvameva manomātrabhrāntyullāsavijṛmbhaṇam | idaṃ jagattayā rāma prasphuratyambubhaṅgavat || 17 ||

English

O Rama, this entire world is merely a manifestation of the mind's delusion, appearing like the reflection of the moon in water.

śivātprākkāraṇātpūrvaṃ cicchetyakalanonmukhī | udeti saumyājjaladheḥ payaḥspando manāgiva || 18 ||

English

From the primordial cause, before Shiva, arises the pure consciousness, like the spontaneous movement of water from the ocean.

sphuraṇājjīvacakratvameti cittormitāṃ dadhat | cidvāribrahmajaladhau kurute sargabudbudān || 19 ||

English

From the vibration, the cycle of life arises, taking the form of the mind's waves, creating bubbles of creation in the ocean of Brahman's consciousness.

svasthaḥ saumya samasyaitadyatsiṃhasya vijṛmbhaṇam | brahmaṇaḥ saṃvidābhāsastatsaṃcetyamiva svayam || 20 ||

English

O gentle one, this is the essence: the manifestation of the lion (Brahman) is like the reflection of Brahman's consciousness, seemingly conscious itself.

citsaṃvittyocyate jīvaḥ saṃkalpātsa mano bhavet | buddhiścittamahaṃkāro māyetyādyabhidhaṃ tataḥ || 21 ||

English

The individual soul is called consciousness | From intention, it becomes the mind | The intellect, the ego, and the illusion, etc., are named from that

tanmātrakalpanā pūrvaṃ tanotīdaṃ jagatmanaḥ | asatyaṃ satyasaṃkāśaṃ gandharvanagaraṃ yathā || 22 ||

English

The mind first creates the subtle elements | It spreads this world | Like an unreal city of the Gandharvas appearing real

yathā śūnye dṛśaḥ sphārānmuktāvalyādidarśanam | yathā svapne bhramaścaiva tathā cittasya saṃsṛtiḥ || 23 ||

English

Just as in the empty sky, the appearance of a pearl necklace, etc., is seen | Just as there is delusion in a dream | Similarly, there is the wandering of the mind

śuddha ātmā nityatṛpta iva śāntaḥ samasthitaḥ | apaśyanpaśyatīvemaṃ cittākhyaṃ svapnavibhramam || 24 ||

English

The pure self is eternally satisfied, as if peaceful, steadily established | Not seeing, it seems to see this mind, which is like a dream delusion

saṃsṛtirjāgradityuktaṃ svapnaṃ vidurahaṃkṛtim | cittaṃ suṣuptabhāvaḥ syāccinmātraṃ turyamucyate || 25 ||

English

Wandering is said to be the waking state | Dream is known as egoism | The mind is the state of deep sleep | Pure consciousness is called the fourth state

atyantashuddhe sanmātre pariṇāmanirāmayam | turyātītaṃ padaṃ tatsyāttatstho bhūyo na śocati || 26 ||

English

In the absolutely pure, mere existence, there is no transformation or disease. That state is beyond the fourth, and one who abides in it does not grieve again.

tasmin sarvamudetīdaṃ tasminneva pralīyate | na cedaṃ na ca tatredaṃ dṛṣṭau muktāvalī yathā || 27 ||

English

Everything arises from that and dissolves into that. It is not seen as separate from that, just as a pearl necklace is not seen separately from the pearls.

arodhakatvāt khaṃ heturyathā vṛkṣasamunnateḥ | akartāpi tathā kartā cetanābdhirjagatsthiteḥ || 28 ||

English

Just as space is the cause of the growth of a tree by not obstructing it, similarly, the ocean of consciousness is the cause of the world's existence by not being the doer.

sannidhānādyathā lauhaḥ pratibimbasy hettutām | yātyādarśastathaivāyaṃ cinmayo'pyarthavedane || 29 ||

English

Just as iron acquires the ability to reflect due to its proximity to a mirror, similarly, the consciousness acquires the ability to perceive objects.

bījamaṅkurapatrādiyuktyā yadvatphalaṃ bhavet | cinmātraṃ cittajīvādiyuktyā tadvammano bhavet || 30 ||

English

Just as a seed becomes a fruit through the stages of sprout, leaf, etc., similarly, pure consciousness becomes the mind through the stages of individual consciousness, life, etc.

svatobījaphalā vipruḍ yathā bījaṃ punarbhavet| tathā cicchetyacittādi tyaktvā svasthā na tiṣṭhati || 31 ||

English

Just as a seed cannot remain in its original state after producing a sprout, similarly, the consciousness (chit) and the non-consciousness (achetana) cannot remain in their original state after being abandoned.

yadyapyabodhe bodhe vā bījāntastarubījayoḥ| iyānbhedo'sti na jagadbrahmaṇorapi cittayoḥ || 32 ||

English

Even though there is a difference between the seed and the tree in terms of ignorance and knowledge, there is no such difference between the world and Brahman in terms of consciousness.

tathāpi vyajyate bodhe satyātmakamakhṇḍitam| rūpaśrīriva dīpena cinmātrālokarūpi yat || 33 ||

English

Nevertheless, in knowledge, the true self shines forth undivided, like the beauty of form illuminated by a lamp, which is the pure light of consciousness.

yadyannikhanayate bhūmeryathā tattannabho bhavet| yā yā vicāryate vidyā tathā sā sā paraṃ bhavet || 34 ||

English

Just as whatever is dug from the earth becomes the sky, similarly, whatever knowledge is contemplated becomes the ultimate.

sphaṭikāntaḥsanniveśaḥ sthāṇutā'vedanādyathā| śuddhe'nānāpi nāneva tathā brahmoudare jagat || 35 ||

English

Just as the inherent nature of a crystal is to appear as a pillar due to ignorance, even though it is pure and non-dual, similarly, the world appears in the womb of Brahman.

brahma sarvaṃ jagadvastu piṇḍamekamakhaṇḍitam | phalapatralatāgulmapīṭhabījamiva sthitam || 36 ||

English

Brahman is the entire universe, an indivisible whole, like a fruit, leaf, creeper, root, and seed.

śrīrāma uvāca | aho citraṃ jagadidamasatsadiva bhāsate | aho bṛhadaho svasthamaho sphuṭamaho tanu || 37 ||

English

Sri Rama said: Oh, how wonderful is this world, which appears as both real and unreal! Oh, how vast, how steady, how clear, how subtle!

brahmaṇi pratibhāsātmā tanmātragunagolakaḥ | avaśyāyakaṇābhāso yathā sphurati tacchrutam || 38 ||

English

In Brahman, the self-luminous essence, the subtle qualities appear like particles of light, as it is heard.

yathā'sau yāti vaipulyaṃ yathā bhavati cātmabhūḥ | yathā svabhāvasiddhārthāttathā kathaya me prabho || 39 ||

English

How does it expand, how does it become self-existent, and how does it manifest according to its inherent nature? Please explain this to me, O Lord.

atyantāsaṃbhavadrūpamananyatsvasvabhāvataḥ | atyantānanubhūtaṃ satsvānubhūtamivāgrataḥ || 40 ||

English

That which is of the nature of the highest possibility, not different from its own nature, is experienced as the highest, as if it were experienced before.

ullāsaphullo phullāṅga iti bālahṛdi sphuṭamyathodeti tathodeti pare brahmaṇi jīvatā || 41 ||

English

The blossoming of joy and the blossoming of the body, thus clearly arises in the heart of the child. Similarly, it arises in the supreme Brahman as life.

mānameyātmikā śuddhā satyaivāsatyavatsthitābhinneva ca na bhinnā syādbrahmaṇo braṃhmaṇātmikā || 42 ||

English

The pure, true, and seemingly unreal, not different yet not the same, should be the nature of Brahman.

yathā brahma bhavatyāśu jīvaḥ kalanajīvitaḥtathā jīvo bhavatyāśu mano mananavedanāt || 43 ||

English

Just as Brahman becomes immediately the living being with partial life, so does the living being become immediately through the mind and the experience of thought.

cittaṃ tanmātramananaṃ paśyatyāśu svarūpavateṣa sadyo'nilalavaprakhyaḥ sphurati khāntare || 44 ||

English

The mind, which is mere thought, sees immediately its own nature. It shines instantly like a spark of fire in the space.

astanimeṣo'nubhavatyavaśyāyakaṇopamamsaṃvedanātmakaṃ kālakalitaṃ kāntamātmani || 45 ||

English

The twinkling of an eye experiences the inevitable, like an atom, the essence of sensation, agitated by time, beautiful in the self.

ahaṃ kimiti śabdārthavedanābhogasaṃvidam | saṃvidaṃ tattvaśabdārthaṃ jīvaḥ paśyati sārthakam || 46 ||

English

I, how does one experience the meaning of words and objects? The living being sees the meaningful essence of the true meaning of words.

tādṛkṣavedanātsō'tha rasśabdārthavedanam | bhāvijihvārthanāmnaikadeśe'nubhavati kṣaṇāt || 47 ||

English

From such perception, then, one experiences the meaning of the word 'taste' in a part of the future tongue in an instant.

tādṛkṣavedanāttejaḥśabdārthounmukhatāṃ gataḥ | bhaviṣyannetranāmnaikadeśe bhavati bhāsanam || 48 ||

English

From such perception, the meaning of the word 'light' becomes manifest in a part of the future eye in an instant.

tādṛkṣavedanātsō'tha ghrāṇaṃ taddṛṣṭivedanāt | sthito yasminbhavatīti tāvaddṛśyāditā sthitā || 49 ||

English

From such perception, then, the sense of smell is situated in that which is seen, and thus the visibility is established.

evaṃprāyaḥ sa jīvātmā kākatālīyavacchanaiḥ | viśiṣṭasaṃniveśatvaṃ bhāvitaṃ paśyati svataḥ || 50 ||

English

Thus, the individual soul, with the gestures of a puppet, sees the distinct arrangement as if it were real.

sa tasya saṃniveśasya tv asato'pi sataḥ sataḥ | śabdabhāvaikadeśatvaṃ śravaṇārthena vindati || 51 ||

English

That (sa) which is the essence (bhāva) of sound (śabda) is perceived (vindati) by the sense of hearing (śravaṇārthe) as a part (ekadeśatvaṃ) of existence (sataḥ), even if it is non-existent (asato'pi).

sparśabhāvaikadeśatvaṃ tvakśabdārthena vindati | rasabhāvaikadeśatvaṃ rasanātvena vindati || 52 ||

English

The essence (bhāva) of touch (sparśa) is perceived (vindati) by the sense of touch (tvakśabdārthena) as a part (ekadeśatvaṃ) of existence. The essence (bhāva) of taste (rasa) is perceived (vindati) by the sense of taste (rasanātvena) as a part (ekadeśatvaṃ) of existence.

rūpabhāvaikadeśatvaṃ netrārthākṛti paśyati | gandhabhāvaikadeśatvaṃ nāsikātvena paśyati || 53 ||

English

The essence (bhāva) of form (rūpa) is perceived (paśyati) by the sense of sight (netrārthākṛti) as a part (ekadeśatvaṃ) of existence. The essence (bhāva) of smell (gandha) is perceived (paśyati) by the sense of smell (nāsikātvena) as a part (ekadeśatvaṃ) of existence.

evaṃ bhāvamayaiḥ sattāprakaṭīkaraṇakṣamam | bhaviṣyadindriyākhyaṃ sa randhraṃ paśyati dehake || 54 ||

English

Thus (evaṃ), with the senses (bhāvamayaiḥ) that are capable (kṣamam) of manifesting (prakaṭīkaraṇa) existence (sattā), one sees (paśyati) the future (bhaviṣyad) sense organs (indriyākhyaṃ) as apertures (randhraṃ) in the body (dehake).

ityevamādi jīvasya rāghavādyatanasya ca | udeti pratibhāsātmā deha evātivāhikaḥ || 55 ||

English

Thus (iti), in this manner (evamādi), the essence of reflection (pratibhāsātmā) arises (udeti) in the body (deha) itself (eva) as transcendent (ātivāhikaḥ) for the living being (jīvasya) and for the self (ātman) of Raghava and others (rāghavādyatanasya ca).

anākhyeyaṃ parā sattāsyātivāhikatāmiva | sā gacchatyapyagacchantī tādṛksatyātmabhāvanāt || 56 ||

English

The supreme reality, which is inexpressible, seems to transcend all limitations. It moves yet remains unmoved, due to its inherent nature of truth.

mātṛmeyapramāṇādi yadā brahmaiva vedanāt | tadātivāhikoktīnāṃ kaḥ prasaṅgastadeva tat || 57 ||

English

When one realizes that everything, including the knower, the known, and the means of knowledge, is Brahman, then what is the need for any other transcendental statements? That itself is the ultimate truth.

anyatvavedanādanyaḥ parasmādātivāhikaḥ | brahmatvavedanādbrahma sā saṃvittirhi nānyajā || 58 ||

English

From the realization of difference, one becomes different and transcendental from the supreme. From the realization of Brahman, one becomes Brahman. That awareness is indeed not born from anything else.

śrīrāma uvāca | asaṃbhavādasavittērbrahmātmaikatayāthavā | ko mokṣaḥ ko vicāraścētyalaṃ bhēdavikalpanaiḥ || 59 ||

English

Sri Rama said: If there is no awareness or if everything is one with Brahman, then what is liberation and what is inquiry? Enough of these distinctions!

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | siddhāntakāla evaiṣa praśnaste rāma rājate | akālapuṣpamālā hi śobhanāpi na śobhate || 60 ||

English

Sri Vasistha said: This question of yours, Rama, is indeed timely. Just as an untimely garland of flowers, though beautiful, does not look good.

sārthaivānarthikā'kālamālā vilasitā yathā| tathaivā'kālamijjantau sarvaṃ kāle hi śobhate || 61 ||

English

Just as a garland of flowers blooms in its proper season, so too does everything shine in its right time.

pratibandhābhyanujñānāṃ kālo dāteti dṛśyate| nanu sarvapadārthānāṃ kālena phalayogataḥ || 62 ||

English

It is seen that time gives permission and obstruction. Indeed, all things are connected to their results by time.

evameva sa jīvātmā svapnātmā samupasthitaḥ| pitāmahatvamucchūnaṃ paśyannātmani kālataḥ || 63 ||

English

Thus, the individual soul, appearing as the dream self, sees the grandeur of the ancestral lineage within the self through time.

oṃmuccāraṇasaṃvittivedanācca prapaśyati| yatkaroti manorājyaṃ bhavatyāśu sa tanmayaḥ || 64 ||

English

Through the awareness of the chanting of Om and the experience of knowledge, one sees. Whatever one does with the sovereignty of the mind, one quickly becomes that.

idamevamasatsarvamiva vyomni tatātmani| parvatoccākṛtirvyoma jagadvyomni vijṛmbhate || 65 ||

English

All this, as if unreal, is like the sky in the self. The sky, in the form of mountains, appears in the sky of the world.

neha prajāyate kiñcinnēha kiñcidvinashyati | jagadgandharvanagararūpeṇa brahma jṛmbhatē || 66 ||

English

Nothing is born here, nothing dies here | The universe expands like the city of the Gandharvas

yathaiva padmajādīnāṃ jīvānāṃ sadāsanmayī | sattā tathaiva sarveṣāmāsarīsṛpamāsuram || 67 ||

English

Just as the existence of beings like Padmaja is eternal and unchanging | So is the existence of all beings, from serpents to demons

saṃvitsaṃbhrama evāyamēvamabhyutthito'pyasan | ābrahmakīṭasaṃvittēḥ samyaksaṃvēdanātkṣayaḥ || 68 ||

English

This confusion of consciousness arises from ignorance | From the correct perception of consciousness from Brahma to the smallest insect, there is destruction

yathā saṃpadyate brahmā kīṭaḥ saṃpadyate tathā | kīṭastu rūḍhabhūtaughavalanāttucchakarmakaḥ || 69 ||

English

Just as Brahma attains, so does the insect | The insect, however, is insignificant due to the disturbance of the elements

yadeva jīvanaṃ jīve cetynonmukhacidātmakam | tadeva pauruṣaṃ tasminsāraṃ karma tadeva ca || 70 ||

English

Whatever life exists in beings, it is consciousness turned towards the self | That is the essence of human action and karma

brahmaṇaḥ sukṛtātpāpātkīṭakasya samutthiteḥ| cittanmātrātmikā bhrāntiḥ prekṣāmātraṃ bhavetkṣayaḥ || 71 ||

English

From the good and bad deeds of Brahman, the illusion arises from the mere mind| By mere observation, it is destroyed

mātṛmānaprameyāṇi na cinmātretaṛadyataḥ| tato dvaitaikyavādārthaḥ śaśaśṛṅgājjinīsamaḥ || 72 ||

English

The objects of perception are not different from pure consciousness| Therefore, the doctrine of duality and non-duality is like the horns of a hare

bhāvadārḍhyātmakaṃ mithyā brahmānando vibhāvyate| ātmaiva kośakāreṇa lālādārḍhyātmakaṃ yathā || 73 ||

English

The bliss of Brahman is falsely imagined to be the solidity of existence| Just as the self is imagined by the silkworm to be the solidity of saliva

manasā brahmaṇā yadyadyathā dṛṣṭaṃ vibhāvitam| tattathā dṛśyate tajjñaiḥ svabhāvasyaiva niścayaḥ || 74 ||

English

Whatever is seen and imagined by the mind and Brahman, that is seen as such by the wise| This is the certainty of its nature

yathā yaduditaṃ vastu tattattanna vinā bhavet| nimeṣamapi kalpaṃ vā svabhāvasya eṣa niścayaḥ || 75 ||

English

Whatever object is said to exist, it does not exist without that| Even for a moment or an eon, this is the certainty of its nature

alīkamidamutpannamalīkaṃ ca vivardhate | alīkameva svadate tathālīkaṃ vilīyate || 76 ||

English

This world is unreal and it grows unreal | It tastes unreal and thus it dissolves unreal || 76 ||

śuddhaṃ sarvagataṃ brahmānantamadvitīyaṃ duḥkhabodhavaśād śuddhamivāsadivānekamivāsarvagamivāvabudhyate || 77 ||

English

The pure, all-pervading Brahman, which is infinite and non-dual, is perceived as impure, many, and limited due to the influence of sorrowful knowledge || 77 ||

jalamanyattaraṅgo'nya iti bālakukalpanayā bhedaḥ kalpyata evamavāstavastasmādyo yo'yamābhāti bhedaḥ | sa kevalamatattvavidbhiḥ parikalpito rajjvāṃ sarpa iva evaṃ bhedābhedaśaktyorevarimitrrayoreva brahmaṇyeva saṃbhavet || 78 ||

English

Just as a child imagines the water and the wave to be different, so too the unreal difference is imagined. Therefore, whatever difference appears, it is merely imagined by those who do not know the truth, like a rope appearing as a snake. Thus, the difference and non-difference, which are like enemies and friends, arise in Brahman alone || 78 ||

tenātmanā'dvitīyenaiva dvitvamivātatam yathāsalilena taraṅgakalpanayā suvarṇena kaṭakakalpanayāivamiti atastena svayamevātmanātmānya iva cetyate || 79 ||

English

By that non-dual Self, duality is imagined as if by water imagining waves, or by gold imagining ornaments. Therefore, by that very Self, the Self is conceived as if it were another || 79 ||

ataḥ kalanā jātā saiva sphāratāṃ prāpya manaḥ saṃpannaṃ tenāhaṃbhāvaḥ kalpito nirvikalpapratyakṣarūpametatprathamaṃ tanmanastadahaṃ bhavati kṣipramahaṃśabdārthabhāvanāt || 80 ||

English

Therefore, the imagination arises and, having attained expansion, the mind becomes complete. By that, the sense of 'I' is imagined. This is the first form of direct perception without differentiation. That mind then quickly becomes the meaning of the word 'I' || 80 ||

tato manohaṃkārābhyāṃ smṛtiranusaṃhitā taistribhistadanubhūtatanmātrāṇi kalpitāni tanmātreṣu jīvena cittātmanā svayaṃ kākatālīyavadbrahmopādānādi yānsaṃniveśaḥ kalpito dṛśyate || 81 ||

English

Then, from the ego and the mind, memory is connected. By these three, the subtle elements are imagined. In the subtle elements, by the individual soul with the mind, the creation of Brahman and other things is imagined, like a puppet show.

evaṃ yadeva manaḥ kalpayati tadeva paśyati sadvā bhavatvasadvā cittaṃ yatkalpayatyabhineviṣṭam tattatpaśyati yāsyati sadiva pratibhāsamupagataṃ sadyaḥ || 82 ||

English

Thus, whatever the mind imagines, that it sees. Whether it is real or unreal, the mind sees whatever it imagines as if it were real.
