śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | evamekaṃ paraṃ vastu rāma nānātvametyalam | nānātvamiva saṃjātaṃ dīpāddīpaśataṃ yathā || 1 ||

English

Shri Vasishtha said: Thus, O Rama, the one supreme reality appears as many, just as many lamps appear from a single lamp.

yathābhūtamasadrūpamātmānaṃ yadi paśyati | vicāryate'ntastadanubhāvahīnaṃ na śocati || 2 ||

English

If one sees the self as it truly is, devoid of false appearances, one does not grieve, for the self is free from the experience of sorrow.

cittamātraṃ narastasmingate śāntamidaṃ jagat | upānadgūḍhapādasya nanu carmāstṛtaiva bhūḥ || 3 ||

English

When the mind is absorbed in that supreme reality, this world becomes peaceful. Just as the earth is covered by the skin of a snake hidden in its burrow.

patramātrādṛte nānyatkadalyā vidyate yathā | bhramamātrādṛte nānyajjagato vidyate tathā || 4 ||

English

Just as there is nothing other than the leaf in a banana plant, so too there is nothing other than illusion in this world.

jāyate bālatāmeti yauvanaṃ vārdhakaṃ tataḥ | mṛtiṃ svargaṃ ca narakaṃ bhramācceto hi nṛtyati || 5 ||

English

One is born, becomes a child, reaches youth, then old age, and experiences death, heaven, and hell. The mind dances due to illusion.

vicitrabudbudollāse svātmano vyatirekiṇi | yathā surāyāḥ sāmarthyaṃ tathā cittasya saṃsṛtau || 6 ||

English

Just as the power of alcohol is evident in the varied bubbles that arise from it, so too is the power of the mind evident in the worldly existence.

yathā dvitvaṃ śaśāṅkādau paśyatyakṣimalāvilam | cicchetanakalākrāntā tathaiva paramātmani || 7 ||

English

Just as one sees duality in the moon due to an eye defect, so too, one influenced by the power of consciousness sees duality in the Supreme Self.

yathā madavaśādbhrāntānkṣībaḥ paśyati pādapān | tathā cetanavikṣubdhānsaṃsārāṃścitprapaśyati || 8 ||

English

Just as a drunk person sees trees due to intoxication, so too, one with a disturbed consciousness sees the worldly elements.

yathā līlābhramādbālāḥ kumbhakṛccakravajjagat | bhrāntaṃ paśyanti cittāttu viddhi dṛśyaṃ tathaiva hi || 9 ||

English

Just as children see the world as a spinning potter's wheel due to playful illusion, so too, know that the visible world is seen as illusory from the mind.

yadā cicchetati dvitvaṃ tadā dvaitekayavibhramaḥ | yadā na cetati dvaitaṃ tadā dvaitekayayoḥ kṣayaḥ || 10 ||

English

When consciousness perceives duality, there is the illusion of duality and unity. When consciousness does not perceive duality, there is the dissolution of duality and unity.

yacchetyate taditaradvyatiriktaṃ cito'sti na | kiṃcinnāstītisaṃśāntyā citaḥ śāmyati cetanaṃ || 11 ||

English

That which is thought of, nothing else exists apart from consciousness | By the peace of knowing that nothing exists, consciousness becomes calm

ciddhanenaikatāmetya yadā tiṣṭhati niścalaḥ | śāmyanvyavaharanvāpi tadā saṃśānta ucyate || 12 ||

English

When one attains oneness with the bliss of consciousness, remaining motionless | Whether in peace or in activity, then one is said to be tranquil

tanvī chetayate chetyaṃ ghanā cinnāṅga chetati | alpakṣībaḥ kṣobhameti ghanakṣībo hi śāmyati || 13 ||

English

The subtle thinks of the object, the dense thinks of the body | The one with little knowledge gets disturbed, the one with dense knowledge becomes calm

ciddhanaiakaprapātasya rūḍhasya parame pade | nairātmyaśūnyavedyādyaiḥ paryāyaiḥ kathanaṃ bhavet || 14 ||

English

For one who is established in the supreme state of the bliss of consciousness | The description should be with terms like non-self, void, and the knowable

cicchetanena chetyatvametyevaṃ paśyati bhramam | jāto jīvāmi paśyāmi saṃsarāmītyasanmayam || 15 ||

English

Thus, with the conscious being, one perceives the objectivity as a delusion | Born, I live, I see, I wander, this is unreal

svabhāvādvyatiriktaṃ tu na cittasyaāsti cetanam | spandādṛte yathā vāyorantaḥ kiṃ nāma cetayate || 16 ||

English

Beyond its inherent nature, there is no consciousness in the mind. Just as there is nothing within the wind except its movement, what is called consciousness?

cetyatvaṃ saṃbhavatyevaṃ kiñcidyaccetyate citā | rajjusarpabhramābhāsaṃ tamavidyābhraṃaṃ viduḥ || 17 ||

English

Consciousness arises in this way: whatever is perceived by the mind is like the illusion of a snake in a rope. This is known as the delusion of ignorance.

saṃvinmātracikitsye'sminvyādhau saṃsāranāmani | cittamātraparispande saṃrambho na ca kiñcana || 18 ||

English

In this disease called worldly existence, the only remedy is pure awareness. In the mere vibration of the mind, there is no anger or any other disturbance.

English

If you abandon everything and stand firm, free from desires, you will be liberated in that very instant, without any doubt.

yathā rajjvāṃ bhujangābhā vinaśyatyeva vīkṣaṇāt | saṃvinmātravivartena naśyatyeva hi saṃsṛtiḥ || 20 ||

English

Just as the illusion of a snake in a rope disappears upon seeing it, so too does the cycle of worldly existence disappear through the mere awareness of pure consciousness.

yatrābhilāṣastannūnaṃ saṃtyajya sthīyate yadi | prāpta evāṅga tanmokṣaḥ kimetāvati duṣkaram || 21 ||

English

Where there is desire, one should immediately abandon it and remain steady | Having attained that, it is liberation | What is so difficult in this?

api prāṇāṃstṛṇamiva jayantīha mahāśayāḥ | yatrābhilāṣastanmātratyāge kṛpaṇatā katham || 22 ||

English

Even great souls who conquer their life breaths like grass | How can there be miserliness in abandoning that desire?

yatrābhilāṣastattatyaktvā cetasā niravagraham | prāptaṃ karmeindriyairgṛhṇastyajannaṣṭaṃ ca tiṣṭha bhoḥ || 23 ||

English

Where there is desire, abandon it with a mind free from attachment | Accept what is attained by the organs of action and remain steady, giving up what is lost

yathā karatale bilvaṃ yathā vā parvataḥ puraḥ | pratyakṣameva tasyālamajatvaṃ paramātmanaḥ || 24 ||

English

Just as a bilva fruit in the palm or a mountain in front | The unborn nature of the Supreme Self is directly perceivable

ātmaiva bhāti jagadityuditastaraṅgaiḥ kalpānteka ivavāridhiraprameyaḥ | jñātaḥ sa eva hi dadāti vimokṣasiddhiṃ tvajñāta eva manase cirabandhanāya || 25 ||

English

The Self alone shines as the world, like waves arising at the end of the eon, the immeasurable ocean | Known, it indeed grants the accomplishment of liberation | Unknown, it binds the mind for a long time
