13.65.1

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | parasmātkāraṇādeva manaḥ prathamamutthitam | mananātmakamābhogi tatstham eva sthitiṃ gatam || 1 ||

Vasishtha said: Mind first arose from the Supreme Cause alone. Made of thought, and spreading out, it came to rest within that very cause, staying right there.

bhāvābhāvalasaddolaṃ tenāyamavalokyate | sargaḥ sadadābhāsaḥ pūrvagandha ivecchayā || 2 ||

Through that mind, this world is seen as a swing shimmering between being and non-being. Creation is an appearance of the real and the unreal, like a lingering scent, arising out of desire.

na kaścid vidyate bhedo dvaitaikyakalanātmakaḥ | brahmajīvamanomāyākartṛkarmajagaddṛśām || 3 ||

There is no difference at all, whether counted as two or as one, between Brahman, the individual soul, the mind, maya, the doer, the deed, the world, and the seer.

apārāvāravistārasaṃvitsalilavalganaiḥ | cidekārṇava evāyaṃ svayamātmā vijṛmbhate || 4 ||

With waves of the water of awareness spreading out without shore or limit, this very self, the one ocean of consciousness, swells and expands by itself.

asatyam asthairya vaśāt satyaṃ saṃpratibhāsataḥ | yathā svapnaḥ tathā cittaṃ jagat sad asad ātmakam || 5 ||

Because it does not last, it is unreal; because it appears before us, it seems real. Like a dream, so is the mind: the world is made of both the real and the unreal.

na sannāsanna saṃjātaścetaso jagato bhramaḥ | ath dhīsamavāyānāmindrajālamivotthitaḥ || 6 ||

The world, a delusion arising from the mind, is neither real nor unreal, nor truly born. It has risen like a magician's illusion among the combinations of the intellect.

dīrghaḥ svapnaḥ sthitiṃ yātaḥ saṃsārākhyo manobalāt | asamyagdarśanātsthāṇāviva puṃspratyayo mudhā || 7 ||

What we call the cycle of rebirth is a long dream that has taken on solidity through the power of the mind, just as, from faulty eyesight, one mistakes a post for a man, for no real reason.

anātmālokanāccittaṃ cittatvaṃ nānuśocati | vetālakalpanādbāla iva saṃkalpite bhaye || 8 ||

Because the mind does not see the true Self, it does not grieve over its own condition of being mind, like a child who is afraid because it has imagined a ghost, though the fear is not real.

anākhyasya svarūpasya sarvāśātigatātmanaḥ | cetyondmukhatayā cittaṃ cittājjīvatvakalpanam || 9 ||

Of that nameless true nature, whose self extends through all directions, when it turns toward objects to know, it becomes mind; and from mind arises the notion of being an individual soul.

jīvatvādapyahaṃbhāvastvahaṃbhāvācca cittatā | cittatvādindriyāditvaṃ tato dehādivibhramāḥ || 10 ||

From being an individual self comes the feeling I am; from that feeling of I comes the state of being mind; from mind comes the state of being the senses and so on; and from that come the delusions of body and the rest.

dehādimohataḥ svarganarakau mokṣabandhane | bījāṅkuravadārambhasaṃrūḍhe dehakarmaṇoḥ || 11 ||

From delusion about the body come heaven and hell, freedom and bondage, rooted from their very start like seed and sprout, in the body and its deeds.

dvaitaṃ yathā nāsti cidātmajīvayostathaiva bhedo'sti na jīvacittayoḥ | yathaiva bhedo'sti na jīvacittayoḥstathaiva bhedo'sti na dehakarmaṇoḥ || 12 ||

Just as there is no duality between the conscious Self and the individual soul, in the same way there is no difference between the soul and the mind. And just as there is no difference between the soul and the mind, in the same way there is no difference between the body and its action.

karmaiva deho nanu deha eva cittaṃ tadevāhamitiha jīvaḥ | sa jīva eva eśvaracit sa ātmā sarvaḥ śivas tvekapadoktametat || 13 ||

Action itself is the body; the body itself is the mind; and that same thing, taken as I here, is the individual soul. That soul itself is the consciousness of the Lord, that is the Self, all is Shiva, this is said in a single sentence.
