śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | asya devādhidevasya parasya paramātmanaḥ | jñānādeva parā siddhirna tv anuṣṭhānaduḥkhataḥ || 1 ||

English

Sri Vasishtha said: The highest attainment of this supreme God of gods, the highest self, comes only from knowledge — not from the suffering of ritual practice.

atra jñānam anuṣṭhānaṃ natv anyad upayujyate | mṛgatṛṣṇājalabhrāntiśāntau cedaṃ nirūpitam || 2 ||

English

Here, knowledge itself is the practice; nothing else serves any purpose. This has been shown in the case of the mirage: the illusion of water in a mirage ends through knowledge alone, not through any other means.

nahyeṣa dūre nābhyāśe nālabhyo viṣame na casvānandābhāsarūpo'sau svadehādeva labhyate || 3 ||

English

This one is not far away, not nearby, not unreachable in some difficult place. He, whose form is the reflection of one's own bliss, is found only within one's own body.

kiṃcinnopakarotyatra tapodānavratādikam | svabhāvamātre viśrāntimṛte nātrāsti sādhanam || 4 ||

English

Here nothing at all helps — not austerity, not charity, not vows, nothing like that. Except resting in one's own true nature, there is no other means here.

sādhusaṃgamasacchāstraparataivātra kāraṇam | sādhanaṃ bādhanaṃ mohajālasya yadakṛtrimam || 5 ||

English

Here the real cause is only devotion to the company of good people and to true scripture. This, being genuine and not artificial, is the means that destroys the web of delusion.

aryaṃ sadeva ityeva saṃparijñānamātrataḥ | jantorna jāyate duḥkhaṃ jīvanmuktatvameti ca || 6 ||

English

By merely fully knowing that only the real, existing one is true, suffering does not arise for a person, and he attains liberation while still living.

śrīrāma uvāca | saṃparijñātamātreṇa kilānenātmanātmanā | punardoṣā na bādhante maraṇādyāḥ kadācana || 7 ||

English

Sri Rama said: Is it true that, merely by knowing this fully through the self itself, faults such as death never trouble a person again?

devadevo mahāneṣa kuto dūrādavāpyate | tapasā kena tīvreṇa kleśena kiyatāthavā || 8 ||

English

This great god of gods — from how far away is he reached? By what kind of intense austerity, or by how much hardship?

English

Sri Vasishtha said: That god is known, Rama, through one's own effort and through discernment that keeps expanding — not through austerity, bathing, or rituals.

rāgadveṣatamaḥkrodhamadamātsaryavarjanam | vinā rāma tapodānaṃ kleśa eva na vāstavam || 10 ||

English

Without giving up attachment, hatred, ignorance, anger, pride, and envy, austerity and charity, Rama, are just hardship — they are not real.

rāgādyupahate citte vañcayitvā paraṃ dhanam | yadarjyate tasya dānādyasyārthāstasya tatphalam || 11 ||

English

When the mind is overpowered by attachment and the like, and one earns wealth by cheating another out of it, then whatever is given in charity from that wealth — its fruit belongs to the person it was taken from.

rāgādyupahate citte vratādi kriyate ca yat | taddambhaḥ procyate tasya phalamasti manāṅga ca || 12 ||

English

When the mind is overpowered by attachment and the like, whatever vow or religious observance is performed is called mere show; its fruit is only very small.

tasmātpuruṣayatnena mukhyamauṣadhamāharet | sacchāstrasajjanāsaṅgau saṃsṛtivyādhināśanau || 13 ||

English

Therefore, through one's own effort, one should obtain the main medicine — the company of good people and true scripture — which destroy the disease of worldly existence.

atraikaṃ pauruṣaṃ yatnaṃ varjayitvetarā gatiḥ | sarvaduḥkhakṣayaprāptau na kācidupapadyate || 14 ||

English

Here, apart from this one thing — a person's own effort — no other path leads to the destruction of all suffering.

śṛṇu tatpauruṣaṃ kīdṛgātmajñānasya labdhaye | yena śāmyatyśeṣeṇa rāgadveṣaviṣūcikā || 15 ||

English

Listen — what kind of effort is needed to gain knowledge of the self, an effort by which the raging disease of attachment and hatred is completely calmed.

yathāsaṃbhavayā vṛttyā lokaśāstrāviruddhayā | santoṣasaṃtuṣṭamanā bhogagandhaṃ parityajet || 16 ||

English

Living by whatever livelihood is possible, one that does not go against worldly custom and scripture, with a mind content and satisfied, one should give up even the trace of sense-pleasure.

yathāsaṃbhavamudyogādanudvigntayā svayā | sādhusaṃgamasacchāstraparatāṃ prathamaṃ śrayet || 17 ||

English

As far as possible, through effort, and with one's own mind undisturbed, one should first turn to devotion to the company of good people and true scripture.

yathāprāptārthasaṃtuṣṭo yo garhitamupekṣate | sādhusaṃgamasacchāstraparaḥ śīghraṃ sa mucyate || 18 ||

English

One who is content with whatever comes without effort, who avoids what is blameworthy, and who is devoted to the company of good people and true scripture, is quickly freed.

vicāreṇa parijñātasvabhāvasya mahāmateḥ | anukampyā bhavantyete brahmaviṣṇvindraśaṃkarāḥ || 19 ||

English

For the great-minded person who has fully known his own true nature through inquiry, even these — Brahma, Vishnu, Indra, and Shankara — become objects of his compassion.

deśe yaṃ sujanaprāyā lokāḥ sādhuṃ pracakṣate | sa viśiṣṭaḥ sa sādhuḥ syāt taṃ prayatnena saṃśrayet || 20 ||

English

In a place, the one whom mostly good people call 'a good person' — he is the distinguished one, he is the true good person; one should take refuge in him with effort.

adhyātmavidyā vidyānāṃ pradhānaṃ tatkathāśrayam | śāstraṃ sacchāstramityāhurmucyate tadvicāraṇāt || 21 ||

English

Among all fields of knowledge, the knowledge of the self is the highest. The scripture that rests on this subject is called true scripture; through inquiry into it, one is liberated.

sacchāstrasatsaṅgamajairvivekais tathā vinaśyanti balādavidyāḥ | yathā jalānāṃ katakānuṣaṅgād yathā janānāṃ matayo'pi yogāt || 22 ||

English

Through the discernment born from true scripture and the company of good people, ignorance is forcibly destroyed — just as muddy water is cleared by contact with the clearing-nut, and just as people's minds are settled through association with the wise.
