śrīrāma uvāca | bhagavanmuniśārdūla kimiveha manobhrame | vidyate kathamutpannaṃ mano māyāmayaṃ kutaḥ || 1 ||

English

Sri Rama said: Lord, tiger among sages, what really is this thing called the wandering mind? How did it arise, and where does this mind made of illusion come from?

utpattimādāviti me samāsena vada prabho | pravakṣyasi tataḥ śiṣṭaṃ vaktavyaṃ vadatāṃ vara || 2 ||

English

Tell me briefly, first, how it originated, my lord. After that, best of speakers, you will tell me the rest that needs to be said.

3

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | mahāpralayasaṃpattāvasatāṃ samupāgate | aśeṣadṛśyasargādau śāntamevāvaśiṣyate || 3 ||

English

Sri Vasishtha said: When the great dissolution comes and everything that exists departs, before the whole visible creation begins, only the peaceful one remains.

āste'nastamito bhāsvānajo devo nirāmayaḥ | sarvadā sarvakṛtsarvaḥ paramātmā maheśvaraḥ || 4 ||

English

That one remains, shining, never setting, unborn, divine, free of all flaw. Always the maker of everything, itself everything, the supreme self, the great lord.

yato vāco nivartante yo muktairavagamyate | yasya cātmādikāḥ saṃjñāḥ kalpitā na svabhāvajāḥ || 5 ||

English

Words turn back unable to reach it; only the liberated know it; and the names given to it, such as "self," are just labels we invent, not things born of its true nature.

yaḥ pumānsāṃkhyadṛṣṭīnāṃ brahma vedāntavādinām | vijñānamātraṃ vijñānavidāmekāntanirmalam || 6 ||

English

He is the person that the followers of Sankhya speak of, the Brahman that the Vedanta teachers speak of, and consciousness alone, entirely pure, for those who know consciousness.

yaḥ śūnyavādināṃ śūnyo bhāsako yo'rkatejasām | vaktā mantā ṛtaṃ bhoktā draṣṭā kartā sadaiva saḥ || 7 ||

English

He is the emptiness that the void-teachers speak of; he is the light that lights up even the light of the sun. He himself is forever the speaker, the thinker, the truth, the enjoyer, the seer, and the doer.

sannapyasadyo jagati yo dehastho'pi dūragaḥ | citprakāśo hyayaṃ yasmādāloka iva bhāsvataḥ || 8 ||

English

In this world he is real, yet not there as any thing you can point to. Though seated inside the body, he reaches far beyond it. He is this very light of consciousness, and from him ordinary light comes the way sunlight comes from the sun.

yasmādviṣṇvādayo devāḥ sūryādiva marīcayaḥ | yasmājjagantyanantāni budbudā jaladheriva || 9 ||

English

From him come gods like Vishnu, the way rays come from the sun. From him come endless worlds, the way bubbles come from the ocean.

yaṃ yānti dṛśyavṛndāni payāṃsīva mahārṇavam | ya ātmānaṃ padārthaṃ ca prakāśayati dīpavat || 10 ||

English

To him all the crowds of visible things return, the way rivers return to the great ocean. He lights up both himself and every object, the way a lamp lights up itself and other things.

ya ākāśe śarīre ca dṛṣatsvapsu latāsu ca | pāṃsuṣvadriṣu vāteṣu pātāleṣu ca saṃsthitaḥ || 11 ||

English

He is present in the sky and in the body, in stones, in water, in vines, in dust, in mountains, in the winds, and in the worlds below the earth.

yaḥ plāvayati saṃrabdhaṃ puryaṣṭakamitastataḥ | yena mūkīkṛtā mūḍhāḥ śilā dhyānamivāsthitāḥ || 12 ||

English

He sets the restless subtle body, the "city of eight," drifting from place to place, from body to body. By him, dull people are struck silent, sitting still like stones, as if lost in meditation.

vyoma yena kṛtaṃ śūnyaṃ śailā yena ghanīkṛtāḥ | āpo drutāḥ kṛtā yena dīpo yasya vaśo raviḥ || 13 ||

English

By him the sky was made empty. By him the mountains were made solid. By him the waters were made to flow. The sun itself is under his rule, like a lamp in his hand.

prasaranti yataścitrāḥ saṃsārāsāravṛṣṭayaḥ | akṣayāmṛtasaṃpūrṇādambhodādiva vṛṣṭayaḥ || 14 ||

English

From him spread out the countless, empty showers of this world of birth and death, the way rain pours down from a cloud filled with endless nectar.

āvirbhāvatirōbhāvamayāstribhuvanormayaḥ | sphurantyatitate yasminmarāviva marīcayaḥ || 15 ||

English

In him, spread out beyond all limit, the waves of the three worlds flicker into being and out of being, appearing and vanishing, the way a shimmer of mirage plays over a desert.

nāśarūpo vināśātmā yo'ntaḥsthaḥ sarvajantuṣu | gupto yo'pyatirikto'pi sarvabhāveṣu saṃsthitaḥ || 16 ||

English

He is not something that can perish; destruction is not his nature. He stands within every creature, hidden, and yet he is also beyond all things, while remaining present in everything that exists.

prakṛtivratatirvyomni jātā brahmāṇḍasatphalā | cittamūlendriyadalā yena nṛtyati vāyunā || 17 ||

English

Nature is like a creeper growing in the sky, bearing the whole universe as its fruit, with the mind as its root and the senses as its leaves, and it is his breath, like wind, that makes this creeper dance.

yaścinmaṇiḥ prakacati pratidehasamudgake | yasminnindau sphurantyetā jagajjālamarīcayaḥ || 18 ||

English

He is the jewel of consciousness that shines inside the small box of each body. In him, as in the moon, these gleaming threads that make up the net of the world flash and shine.

praśānte ciddhane yasmi sphurantyamṛtavarṣiṇi | dhārājalāni bhūtāni sṛṣṭayaḥ taḍitaḥ sphuṭāḥ || 19 ||

English

In him, a calm, dense mass of consciousness that rains down nectar, living beings appear like streams of water, and whole creations flash out like clear bolts of lightning.

camatkurvanti vastūni yadāloktayā mithaḥ | asajjātamasadyena yena satsattvamāgatam || 20 ||

English

By his light, things dazzle each other and seem wonderful. By him, what is unreal and born of unreality comes to seem as if it truly exists.

calatīdamanicchasya kāyo yo yasya saṃnidhau | jaḍaṃ paramaraktasya śāntamātmani tiṣṭhataḥ || 21 ||

English

This body moves, even though the one in whose presence it moves has no wish for it to move; the body is just inert matter. He, supremely unattached, remains at peace, resting within himself.

niyatirdēśakālau ca calanaṃ spandaṇaṃ kriyā | iti yēna gatāḥ sattāṃ sarvasattātigāminā || 22 ||

English

Fate, space and time, movement, vibration, action, all of these get their reality from him, even though he himself goes beyond all existence.

śuddhasaṃvinmayatvādyaḥ khaṃ bhavedvyomacintayā | padārthacintayārthtavamiva tiṣṭhatyadhiṣṭhitaḥ || 23 ||

English

Because he is made of pure consciousness alone, he becomes space itself the moment space is thought of; the way a thing gets its thingness only when it is thought of as a thing, he stands as the ground underneath everything, taking whatever form is thought upon him.

kurvannapīha jagatāṃ mahatāmanantavṛndaṃ na kiṃcana karoti na kāścanāpi | svātmanyanastamayasaṃvidi nirvikāre tyaktodayasthitimati sthita eka eva || 24 ||

English

Though he seems to make this endless host of vast worlds, in truth he does nothing at all and makes nothing at all. He stays as the one alone, within his own self, a consciousness that never sets, that never changes, that has no beginning and no continuing state, because it is beyond even the ideas of arising and lasting.
