yatra saṃkalpanaṃ tatra tanmano'ṅga tathā sthitamsaṃkalpamanasī bhinne na kadācana kecana || 44 ||

English

Wherever there is thought, there, dear one, the mind stands in just that way; thought and mind are never separate, in no way at all.

satyamastvathavā'satyaṃ padārthapratibhāsanamtāvanmātraṃ mano viddhi tadbrahmaiva pitāmahaḥ || 45 ||

English

Whether the appearance of an object be true or false, know that appearance alone to be the mind; and that itself is Brahma, the grandfather of all beings.

ātivāhikadehātmā mana ityabhidhīyate | ādhibhautikabuddhiṃ tu sa ādhatte cirasthiteḥ | || 46 ||

English

The self of the subtle body, the one that carries a person on after death, is called the mind; but it takes on a coarse, worldly understanding so that it can go on existing for a long time.

avidyā saṃsṛtiścittaṃ mano bandho malastamaḥ | iti paryāyanāmāni dṛśyasya viduruttamāḥ | || 47 ||

English

Ignorance, the cycle of worldly life, thought-stuff, mind, bondage, impurity, darkness — the wise know these as different names for one and the same thing: the seen world.

nahi dṛśyādṛte kiṃcinmanaso rūpamasti hi | dṛśyaṃ cotpannamevaitanneti vakṣyāmyahaṃ punaḥ | || 48 ||

English

For the mind has no form at all apart from the seen world. As for whether this seen world has truly come into being or not, I will explain that again.

yathā kamalabījāntaḥ sthitā kamalavallarī | mahācitparamāṇvantastathā dṛśyaṃ jagatsthitam | || 49 ||

English

Just as the whole lotus vine lies hidden inside the seed of a lotus, in the same way this world that we see lies hidden inside a tiny atom of the great consciousness.

prakāśasya yathā''loko yathā vātasya cāpalam | yathā dravatvaṃ payasi dṛśyatvaṃ draṣṭarīdṛśam | || 50 ||

English

As shining belongs naturally to light, as restlessness belongs naturally to wind, as fluidity belongs naturally to water, in the same way this being-seen belongs naturally to the seer.

aṅgadatvaṃ yathā hemni mṛganadyāṃ yathā jalam | bhittiryathā svapnapure tathā draṣṭari dṛśyadhīḥ || 51 ||

English

As being a bracelet is nothing but gold, as the water in a mirage is nothing but the mirage, as a wall in a dream city is nothing but the dream, in the same way this idea of a seen world is nothing but the seer himself.

evaṃ draṣṭari dṛśyatvamananyadiva yatsthitam | tadapyunmārjayāmyāśu tvaccittādarśato malam || 52 ||

English

So although this being-seen that exists in the seer looks as if it were not different from him, I will still quickly wipe away that stain from the mirror of your mind.

yaddraṣṭurasyādraṣṭṛtvaṃ dṛśyābhāve bhavedvalāt | tadviddhi kevalībhāvaṃ tata evāsataḥ sataḥ || 53 ||

English

When there is nothing left to see, and because of that this seer's very seeing stops on its own, know that to be the state of being alone; and that alone is how the real comes in place of the unreal.

tattāmupagate bhāve rāgadveṣādivāsanāḥ | śāmyantyaspandite vāte spandanakṣubdhatā yathā || 54 ||

English

When that state is reached, the old habits of liking and disliking and the rest all become calm, just as when the wind stops moving, the disturbance caused by its movement becomes calm.

asaṃbhavati sarvasmindigbhūmyākāśarūpiṇi | prakāśye yādṛśaṃ rūpaṃ prakāśasyāmalaṃ bhavet || 55 ||

English

When everything that has the shape of directions, earth, and sky, everything that is lit up, stops existing, then whatever form of light is left over becomes light's own pure form, without any stain.

trijagattvamahaṃ cetti dṛśye'sattāmupāgate | draṣṭuḥ syātkevalībhāvastādṛśo vimalātmanaḥ | || 56 ||

English

When the seen world, the idea of the three worlds, you, and I, stops existing, then the seer, whose own self is already pure, reaches just this kind of state of being alone.

anāptākhilaśailādi pratibimbe hi yādṛśī | syāddarpaṇe darpaṇatā kevalātmasvarūpiṇī | || 57 ||

English

When a mirror holds no reflection at all, no mountains, nothing else, then whatever mirror-quality is left in it, made only of its own pure nature, is exactly like that state.

ahaṃ tvaṃ jagadityādau praśānte dṛśyasaṃbhrae | syāttādṛśī kevalatā sthite draṣṭaryavīkṣaṇe | || 58 ||

English

When the confusion of the seen world, things like I, you, and the world, has become quiet, and the seer stays there without looking at anything, that same kind of aloneness comes.

śrīrāma uvāca | saccenn na śāmyatyevedaṃ nābhāvo vidyate sataḥ | asattāṃ ca na vidmo'smin dṛśye doṣapradāyini | || 59 ||

English

Rama said: if this world is real, then it will surely never become quiet, because what is real never stops existing. And we do not know how this troublesome seen world could be unreal either.

60

tasmātkathamiyaṃ śāmyed brahmandṛśyaviṣūcikā | manobhavabhramakarī duḥkhasaṃtatidāyinī | || 60 ||

English

So, sage, how can this disease of the seen world ever be calmed; it is what stirs up the mind's confusion and keeps giving one sorrow after another.

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | asya dṛśyapiśācasya śāntyai mantramimaṃ śṛṇu | rāmātyantamayaṃ yena mṛtimeṣyati naṅakṣyati || 61 ||

English

Vasishtha said: listen, Rama, to this spell for calming this demon that is the seen world, by which it will go to complete death and be destroyed.

yadasti tasya nāśo'sti na kadācana rāghava | tasmāttannaṣṭamapyantarbījabhūtaṃ bhaveddhṛdi || 62 ||

English

Raghava, what truly exists is never destroyed, not ever. So even when it looks destroyed, it still stays inside the heart as a seed.

smṛtibījāccidākāśe punarudbhūya dṛśyadhīḥ | lokaśailāmbarākāraṃ doṣaṃ vitanute'tanum || 63 ||

English

From the seed of memory, the idea of the seen world sprouts again in the space of consciousness, and spreads out the huge flaw that takes the shape of worlds, mountains, and sky.

ityanirmokṣadoṣaḥ syānna ca tasyeha saṃbhavaḥ | yasmāddevarṣimunayo dṛśyante mukttibhājanam || 64 ||

English

This being so, there would be the fault that no one could ever be freed; but that cannot really happen here, since gods, sages, and seers are seen to be the ones who do reach freedom.

yadi syājjagadādīdaṃ tasmānmokṣo na kasyacit | bāhyasthamastu hṛtsthaṃ vā dṛśyaṃ nāśāya kevalam || 65 ||

English

If this world and its cause truly existed, then no one at all could ever be freed. Whether the seen world stands outside or stands inside the heart, it exists only to be destroyed.

tasmādimāṃ pratijñāṃ tvaṃ śrṛṇu rāmātibhīṣaṇāmyāmuttareṇa granthena nūnaṃ tvamavabudhyase || 66 ||

English

So listen, Rama, to this very fearsome vow, which you will surely come to understand through the teaching that follows.

ayamākāśabhūtādirūpo'haṃ ceti lakṣitaḥjagacchabdasya nāmārtho nanu nāstyeva kaścana || 67 ||

English

This world that appears in the shape of sky, the elements, and I is marked out this way; but really, the word world does not name anything at all that truly exists.

yadidaṃ dṛśyate kiṃciddṛśyajātaṃ purogatamparaṃ brahmaiva tatsarvamajarāmaramavyayam || 68 ||

English

Whatever is seen here, this whole array of seen things standing right in front, all of it is nothing but the supreme Brahman, which never grows old, never dies, and never changes.

pūrṇe pūrṇaṃ prasarati śānte śāntaṃ vyavasthitamvyomanyevoditaṃ vyoma brahmaṇi brahma tiṣṭhati || 69 ||

English

In what is full, fullness spreads out; in what is peaceful, peace stays settled; sky rises only inside sky; Brahman rests only inside Brahman.

na dṛśyamasti sadrūpaṃ na draṣṭā na ca darśanamna śūnyaṃ na jaḍaṃ no cicchāntamevedamātatam || 70 ||

English

There is no seen thing that truly exists, no seer, and no seeing; there is no emptiness, no dull matter, no ordinary awareness either; this is only peace, stretched out everywhere.

śrīrāma uvāca | vandhyāputreṇa piṣṭo'driḥ śaśaśṛṅgaṃ pragāyati | prasārya bhujasaṃpātaṃ śilā nṛtyati tāṇḍavam || 71 ||

English

Rama said: a barren woman's son grinds up a mountain, a rabbit's horn sings a song, a rock stretches out its arms and dances the wild dance.

sravanti sikatāstailaṃ paṭhantyupalaputrikāḥ | garjanti citrajaladā itīvedaṃ vacaḥ prabho || 72 ||

English

Grains of sand ooze oil, stone dolls recite lessons, painted clouds thunder; that, lord, is what this teaching of yours sounds like.

jarāmaraṇaduḥkhādiśailākāśamayaṃ jagat | nāstīti kimidaṃ nāma bhavatā'pi mamocyate || 73 ||

English

This world - full of mountains and sky, together with old age, death, sorrow and other sufferings - how can you too tell me that it does not exist?

yathedaṃ na sthitaṃ viśvaṃ notpannaṃ na ca vidyate | tathā kathaya me brahman yenaitannniścitaṃ bhavet || 74 ||

English

Tell me, O Brahmin, in such a way that it becomes fully certain to me, how this universe is not established, is not born, and does not exist at all.

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | nāsamanvitavāgasmī śṛṇu rāghava kathyate | yathedamasadābhāti vandhyāputra ivā'āravī || 75 ||

English

Sri Vasishtha said: My words are not without meaning, listen, Raghava, I am telling you - this world, though unreal, appears just like the cry of the son of a barren woman.

idamādāvanutpannaṃ sargādau tena nāstyalamidaṃ hi manaso bhāti svapnādau pattanaṃ yathā || 76 ||

English

This world, unborn at the very start of creation, therefore truly does not exist; it appears to the mind just as a city appears in a dream.

mana eva ca sargādāvanutpannamasadvapuḥtadetacchraṇu vakṣyāmi yathaivamanubhūyate || 77 ||

English

The mind itself, unborn at the start of creation, has an unreal body; listen to this, I will tell you how it comes to be experienced this way.

manodṛśyamayaṃ doṣaṃ tanotīmaṃ kṣayātmakamasadeva sadākāraṃ svapnaḥ svapnāntaraṃ yathā || 78 ||

English

The mind spreads out this defect made of what is seen, a defect that is perishable by nature - unreal, yet appearing real - just as a dream creates another dream within it.

tatsvayaṃ svairamevāśu saṃkalpayati dehakamteneyamindrajālaśrīrvitatena vitanyate || 79 ||

English

That mind itself, freely and quickly, imagines a body for itself; and by that extended mind, this whole splendour of a magic show is spread out.

sphurati valgati gacchati yācate bhramati majjati saṃharati svayamaparatāmupayātyapi kevalaṃ calati cañcalaśaktitayā manaḥ || 80 ||

English

It quivers, it leaps, it goes, it begs, it wanders, it sinks, it withdraws, it even itself turns into something else - the mind simply keeps moving, because its very power is restless.
