śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | itthaṃ jagadahaṃtādidṛśyajātaṃ na kiṃcana | ajātatvācca nāstveva yaccāsti parameva tat || 1 ||
Vasishtha said: in this way, the world, the sense of "I," and everything else we see are nothing at all. Because they were never truly born, they do not really exist. What truly exists is only the Supreme.
In the beginning, the supreme space itself, on its own, becomes aware as all the living beings, the way water lying still and silent deep inside the ocean still seems to move.
Without ever losing its true form as space, it seems to feel a sense of being "someone inside," the way, in a dream, the inner movement of the mind builds up a whole mountain out of pure imagination.
This great body, called the Cosmic Person, has no earth or other such elements in it. It is only a subtle body that travels on, made purely of space, born out of pure consciousness alone.
It never decays. It is like a mountain seen in a dream, like a dream-city that seems to go on and on. It takes the shape of a painted army, an army an artist has painted, standing still and fixed inside a steady picture.
It is like the many carved figures on a great pillar that was never actually dug into the ground and fixed there. In the space of Brahman, its self stands rooted nowhere, like a carved wooden figure standing on a fine pillar that has no base planted in the earth.
This is the first Prajapati, the lord of all creatures, known as the Self-born one. Since he has no past actions of his own left over from before, he also has no cause behind him.
so'kuḍya eva kuḍyātmā dṛśyādṛśyaḥ svayaṃsthitaḥ | na ca dṛśyaṃ na ca draṣṭā na sraṣṭā sarvameva ca || 9 ||
He is not a wall, yet he has the very nature of a wall; he is both something that can be seen and something that cannot be seen, and he stands by himself. He is not the thing seen, not the one seeing, not even the one creating, yet he is everything.
He alone is the true meaning behind every word and every echo. From him the whole line of living beings rises up, the way a row of lamps is lit one after another from a single lamp.
One thought truly rises out of another thought, free of earth and the other elements, as if it had its own beginning, though really nothing here is empty, the way one dream leads on into another dream inside it.
asmādekapratispandājjīvāḥ saṃprasaranti ye | sahakārikāraṇānāmabhāvācca sa eva te || 12 ||
From this one single stirring, the living beings that spread out, since there is no other helping cause for them, are in truth that very same one alone.
When there is no helping cause, the cause and its effect are one and the same thing. So this whole show of creation is nothing other than the Supreme itself; it is not separate from it.
The one that the scriptures call Brahma, the self of the Cosmic Person, and the whole of creation itself, all of these are just this same one, the space of living beings, existing in this way, since earth and the other elements are not really real.
Rama said: is the individual soul something limited, or is it a great heap, or is it endless? Or is there instead one endless self, a single mass of souls as vast as an unmoving mountain?
From what do the individual souls come out, like streams of rain from a cloud, like fine drops of spray from the ocean, like sparks flying off heated iron?
iti me bhagavanbrūhi jīvajālavinirṇayam jñātametanmayā prāyastadeva prakaṭīkuru || 17 ||
So, Lord, please tell me the true answer about this whole tangle of living souls. I already understand this for the most part, please just make it fully clear to me.
śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca eka eva na jīvo'sti rāśīnāṃ saṃbhavaḥ kutaḥ śaśaśṛṅgaṃ samuḍḍīya prayātīva hi te vacaḥ || 18 ||
Vasishtha said: there is not even a single individual soul at all, so how could there be heaps of them? Your question flies off like the horn of a rabbit, something that does not exist.
All the meanings that have been built up around the word "soul," along with every other such construction, do not exist here at all. Let this be your firm and unshaken conviction.
What truly exists here is only pure consciousness, the stainless Brahman, which reaches everywhere. Because it holds every power within it, it brings out from itself, on its own, the different parts that seem to appear.
Just by the simple unfolding of consciousness, like a creeper bursting into full bloom, one quickly sees that very consciousness alone, whether it appears with a form or without a form.
As the individual soul, as the intellect, as the stir of action, as the mind, and as the sense of twoness and oneness, consciousness, whose own being keeps shining out, puts itself to work in the act of knowing.
sā'buddhaiva bhavatyevaṃ bhavedbrahmaiva bodhataḥ | abodhaḥ prekṣayā yāti nāśaṃ na tu prabudhyate || 24 ||
That same consciousness thus becomes as if unaware in this state; through waking up, it becomes Brahman itself. Unawareness is destroyed simply by looking at it closely, it does not, by itself, become aware.
yathāndhakāro dīpena prekṣyamāṇaḥ praṇaśyati | na cāsya jñāyate tattvamabodhasyaivameva hi || 25 ||
Just as darkness disappears the moment a lamp shines on it and it is looked at, and its true nature can never be known — ignorance is exactly the same.
In the same way, Brahman itself is the individual self — undivided, unbroken, having all power, without beginning or end, and made of the essence of great consciousness.
sarvāṇuṇutayā tvasyā na kvacidbhedakalpanā| vidyate yā hi kalanā sā tadevānubhūtitaḥ || 27 ||
Because this self is everything and yet is as subtle as an atom, there is nowhere in it any real notion of difference. Whatever sense of division is found is only something that arises out of individual experience.
Shri Rama said: If this is so, O Brahmin, then why, by the will of the one great self, do all the individual selves of the world not become united, because of the oneness of that great self?
Shri Vasishtha said: That Brahman, which is the self of the great self, is made of all powers. It remains here as pure will itself, undivided and unbroken.
Whatever that great being wills, that quickly comes into being for it. First it wishes for this wishing itself, and from that wishing, duality then arises.
If the rule of the primary power were not firmly established, then, since the fruit depends on that power, the results of any wished-for actions would never come about anywhere.
In this way Brahman exists as the great self, free from any beginning or end. The many individual selves are only the great self multiplied — apart from that they are nothing at all.
From awareness of an object, one becomes an individual self and enters the cycle of worldly life. From the absence of that awareness, one again reaches the same undivided state.
In this way, through the gradual and sudden workings of the great self, the individual selfhood of the lesser selves arises together with it — just as goldenness arises in copper.
Meanwhile, in the great space, this multitude of selves, though it is not really there, still arises as if real — it is one's own self alone, appearing through the wonder-working of consciousness.
Since this is an image made of consciousness itself, being entirely of the same substance as consciousness, it is without limit. This very thing reflects in consciousness as 'the whole expanse of the worlds'.
That same imperishable consciousness, though it is never really separate from its true form, is known through words like 'change' and 'transformation' — but only by its own power.
That self-relishing of consciousness, which is by nature an unbroken play happening on its own — that, as the shining forth of whatever is perceived, is what stands as 'the world'.
When, within the self, by the self, that sense of 'I' flashes forth on its own — like water rippling — then this power fully sees that tiny point of 'I' which holds the whole world within it.
O Raghava, the sense of 'I' about whatever is perceived, arising from consciousness, is itself only an imagined idea. The subtle elements and everything else are consciousness itself — so where, then, do duality and oneness really stand?
When the cause of individual selfhood and the like is given up, give up also the ideas of 'you' and 'I'. What remains, between the existent and the non-existent, becomes the very nature of what is real.
citā yathādau kalitā svasattā sā tathoditā | abhinnā dṛśyate vyomnaḥ sattāsatte na vidmahe || 48 ||
Just as consciousness was understood at the very beginning, its own being has arisen exactly the same way now. It is seen as no different from space; apart from it we find no real existence or non-existence.
This whole universe is empty space; the world called activity is that same space, the home of the wise. It looks like it has shape only because it is the wonder-flash of pure awareness, and nothing else exists.
yo yadvilāsastasmātsa na kadācana bhidyate | api sāvayavaṃ tasmātkai vānavayave kathā || 50 ||
Whatever is the play of a thing is never separate from that thing. If even something with parts is not different from its source, what need is there to speak of that which has no parts at all?
Consciousness is eternal, beyond grasp as an object, nameless, and spread out everywhere. Whatever form the world has is simply the form of that consciousness flashing forth.
Mind, intellect, ego, the elements, mountains, and directions, all these many forms that make up the standing world come from the one reality, consciousness.
citeścittvaṃ jagadviddhi nājagaccittvamasti hi | ajagattvādacicciatsyādbhānādbhedo jagatkutaḥ || 53 ||
Know that the very nature of consciousness is what is called the world; there is no world-nature that is separate from consciousness. If it were not the world, consciousness would become non-consciousness. Since it only appears as the world, how can there be any real difference called the world?
Consciousness is like the seed of a mirage. Its own inner flash of wonder, reduced to nothing but the bare subtle stuff of a living being, is what we call the world.
When consciousness's own power shines out from the mind as the feeling I, that is called the jiva, the individual self, a self made of mere vibration, carrying the name of what is yet to come.
yaccicittvena kacanaṃ svasaṃpādyābhidhātmakam | svavikārairvyavacchedyaṃ bhidyate no na vidyate || 56 ||
Consciousness shining forth as itself is, in truth, only a name for what it produces out of itself. It is set apart only by its own changes; it is not truly divided, yet it is not unreal either.
Between consciousness and its vibration there is no more difference than between a doer and his own act. The vibration alone is the act, and that very act is what is called the person.
jīvaścittaparispandaḥ puṃsāṃ cittaṃ sa eva ca | manastvindriyarūpaṃ satsattāṃ nāneva gacchati || 58 ||
The individual soul is nothing but the vibration of the mind, and that same vibration is what people call the mind. The mind, taking the form of the senses, though it truly exists, does not actually become many separate things.
The world, in which every distinction has finally come to rest, is nothing but a flash of the light of consciousness. Cause and effect and all such relations do not exist apart from that light.
acchedyo'hamadāhyo'hamakledyo'śoṣya eva ca | nityaḥ sarvagataḥ sthāṇuracalo'hamiti sthitam || 60 ||
I cannot be cut, I cannot be burned, I cannot be wetted, and I cannot be dried. I am eternal, present everywhere, unmoving, and unchanging, this is a settled fact.
Here people argue with each other, driven by their own confusion, the way confused people always do. But we, who once caused such confusion, have now become free from delusion.
In what is seen, in what has form, in what is fixed as an object known, there change and difference can appear. But not in the formless, in that which shines as the knower of it, the space of consciousness, whose nature is beyond both being and non-being.
On the tree of consciousness, out of the very sap of what can be known, its power puts forth its own blossom clusters, named time and the rest, clear and pure like open space, the honeyed splendor of consciousness in flower.
Of its own accord, the wondrous egg of consciousness flashes into being, unstruck by anything outside it. Of its own accord, the breath of consciousness stirs with its own particular vibration, like a bird born from that very egg.
Of its own accord, the wondrous shining of consciousness is like water that springs up on its own, not drawn from any buried source. Of its own accord it takes on wondrous material forms, and even the finest limb of the body is fashioned by it.
The moonlight of consciousness, delighting in its own wondrous flavors, is always shining, never setting. Consciousness alone stands revealed, the vast light of consciousness itself.
When the outer world has set on its own, consciousness rises through its own self-knowledge. And in inert, unconscious things, through their very inertness, that same consciousness reaches the state of deep sleep.
svayaṃ spanditayāspandicitvācciti mahānabha | citprakāśaprakāśo hi jagadasti ca nāsti ca || 68 ||
Consciousness, being at once vibrating and unvibrating, is the vast sky. Because it is the very light of the light of consciousness, the world both exists and does not exist.
cidākāśaikśūnyatvaṃ jagadasti ca nāsti ca | cidālokamahārūpaṃ jagadasti ca nāsti ca || 69 ||
The world, being nothing but the single emptiness of the space of consciousness, both exists and does not exist. The world, being the vast form of the light of consciousness, both exists and does not exist.
cinmārutaparispando jagadasti ca nāsti ca | ciddhanadhvāntakṛṣṇatvaṃ jagadasti ca nāsti ca || 70 ||
The world, being only the stirring of the breeze of consciousness, both exists and does not exist. The world, being only the blackness of thick darkness made of consciousness, both exists and does not exist.
cidarkālokadivaso jagadasti ca nāsti ca | citkajjalarajastaiparamāṇurjagatkramah || 71 ||
The world, being the daylight of the sun of consciousness, both exists and does not exist. The unfolding of the world is nothing but a tiny particle, like soot, or dust, or a drop of oil, all made only of consciousness.
The world is only the heat of the fire that is consciousness. The world is only the whiteness of the conch shell that is consciousness. The world is only the rocky core of the mountain that is consciousness. The world is only the wetness of the water that is consciousness.
The world is consciousness, the way sweetness belongs to sugarcane. Consciousness is the world, the way richness belongs to milk. The world is consciousness, the way coldness belongs to ice. Consciousness is the world, the way burning belongs to a flame.
The world is consciousness, the way oil belongs to a mustard seed. Consciousness is the world, the way a wave belongs to a river. The world is consciousness, the way sweetness belongs to honey. The world is consciousness, the way gold belongs to a gold armlet.
The world is consciousness, the way fragrance belongs to a flower. Consciousness is the world, the way a fruit belongs to the tip of a vine. The existence of consciousness alone is the existence of the world, and the existence of the world is itself the very body of consciousness.
In this consciousness, difference and change and such things sit the way dirt sits under a fingernail - only on the surface, no real part of it. So this world of three realms, whether you call it existing or not existing, is made entirely of that one Being.
Because it is not different in nature from that one undivided reality, existence and non-existence are actually one and the same. Distinctions like part and whole, or word and its meaning, are as unreal as the horn of a hare.
Shame on those who invent this separate world just to deny direct experience. In truth, no world exists at all - not its mountains, its oceans, its earth, its rivers, or its ruling lord.
Since consciousness is one, how could there be any room in it for the illusion of something else? Even where it seems as dense as the inside of a stone, consciousness, in its own space, remains perfectly clear.
Just as a rock quietly holds its whole inner structure within itself, so too, within the space that is this mass of things, this apparent flaw is only a stain born of that very space.
sattāsattātmātātattāmattāśleṣā na santi te| pallavāntaralekhaughasaṃniveśavadātatam || 81 ||
Being and non-being, selfhood, thisness, and every clinging distinction do not really belong to it at all - they only run through it the way a network of veins runs through the leaves of a young plant.
This world, being at once different from consciousness and not different from it, carries that very nature within itself simply because of consciousness's own nature. Consciousness is the root of every cause, the very first cause - like the forefather of the whole line of causes.
By its own nature, the mind is the true source of this world, for consciousness is known only through direct experience. And the non-existence of consciousness, which nothing else can grasp, cannot be proved even by mere words.
My friend, know that the three worlds, resting within the great consciousness, are a distinction as empty as the sky itself. This entire visible world is nothing but that highest state - be certain of this through your own direct experience.
When the sage had said this, the day came to its end. The sun went down, and it was time for the evening prayers. The assembly, having bowed in salutation, went to bathe. And as the darkness of dusk faded, morning came again together with the rays of the sun.
