Sri Vasishtha said: Rama, in the supreme Brahman - vast, equal everywhere, resting evenly - space, light, and darkness have not yet come into being; they exist only as a possibility inside pure awareness itself.
First, out of that being which carries within it a trace of something to be known, the sense of being an object of knowledge arises. Then, out of that same power of consciousness to know, the working of thought, called mind, arises.
tato jīvatvakalanaṃ cetysaṃyogacetanāt | tato'sya māyākalanaṃ cetyaikaparatāvaśāt || 3 ||
Then, from the awareness of being joined to something known, the sense of being an individual soul arises. Then, from being wholly caught up in that one thing known, what is called maya, or illusion, forms.
tato buddhitvakalanamahantāpariṇāmatḥ | etadeva manastādiśabdatanmātrakādimat || 4 ||
Then, through the change into I-ness, the sense of being the intellect arises. This very thing, taking on sound and the other subtle elements, becomes what is called the mind.
By swelling up, and by imagining the other subtle elements taking the form of gross things, this is seen, in this way, as a great thicket - the beginning of the world.
This is the seed of the world's thickets and groves, sprung up on its own; it does not depend on anything at all - not on earth, water, fire, or the rest.
This, being made of consciousness, will later create the earth and the rest - just as a dreamer creates his own city in a dream, though that city is nothing but consciousness itself.
Wherever the first sprout of the world is, staying right there it lets go of it. The seed of the world is the five elements, and the seed of the five elements is the unchanging consciousness.
Know this: whatever is the seed, that same thing is the fruit; so the world is made of Brahman. In this way, this group of five, in the great sky, at the start of creation -
By the power of consciousness, the self, having become its own part, is only imagined - it is not real. Through this, having become swollen, this world is spread out.
That too, being a self imagined in the form of space, exists as made of being, within the self. Nowhere is a thing truly established when it is proved by means of something that is itself not established.
then know that those five, when fully grown, are Brahman itself, appearing as the sequence of the three worlds; just as at the start of creation this arising of the five happens.
tathaivādyeha bhūtatve yāti kāraṇatāṃ svayam | evaṃ na jāyate kiñcjjagajjātaṃ na lakṣyate || 15 ||
In the same way, here, in the beginning, it itself becomes the cause by turning into the elements. So nothing at all is really born; the world, though it seems born, cannot actually be seen as born.
Like a city in a dream or in imagination, the unreal is experienced as if it were real. In the vast space of Brahman's own space, the state of being an individual space, a jiva, arises within the self.
Thus, since earth and the other elements have not really come into being, the self remains pure like consciousness itself. This is called the individual soul, said to have arisen in the sky like one's own self.
by its own thought it becomes aware, I am a tiny speck of light. That very thing it then imagines as swollen and expanded, within itself, in its own inner space.
asadeva sadākāraṃ saṃkalpenduryathā na san | tam eva bhāvayan draṣṭradṛśyarūpatayā sthitaḥ || 20 ||
The unreal itself takes on the appearance of the real - like the moon imagined in one's mind, which does not really exist. Imagining that very thing, it comes to stand as both the seer and the seen.
eka eva dvitāmeti svapne svamṛtibodhavat| kiṃcitsthaulyamivādatte tatastārakatāṃ vidan|| 21 ||
The one alone becomes two, as in a dream where one knows one's own death. It takes on something like solidity, and then, taking the form of a star, knows itself as such.
yathābhāvitamātrārthabhāvitādvishvarūpatḥ| sa eva svātmā satatopyayam sohamiti svayam|| 22 ||
According to whatever it merely imagines as its object, having imagined itself in the form of the universe, that very self - though it always remains the same one - itself thinks, I am that.
From the mind it takes on a belief - like someone in a dream taking on the state of a traveler, though he is really himself. In the same way it takes on a shape like a star, called the body-to-be.
It imagines and enters into that state; the mind becomes, as it were, an object to be known. Giving up everything outside it, then, inside the hollow of that star -
A mountain that stands outside still shows itself inside a mirror. A body shows itself inside a well of water. And a word can be kept sealed inside a box.
In dream and in imagination, this tiny awareness that knows things is the jiva, the small individual self. This jiva, sitting within the pupil that is its own true form, becomes conscious all by itself.
This jiva has the form of intellect, mind, and the rest, and the form of knowing, of existing, and so on. By itself, this space-like jiva sits there, inside the covering of the space within the pupil of the eye.
With the feeling 'I am looking,' it seems to spread out into space in order to see. Then, through the two openings of the eyes, it again becomes what will be called 'the outside world.'
That by which it sees becomes named 'the pair of eyes.' That by which it touches - that indeed is 'the skin.' And that by which it hears - that is 'the ear.'
That by which it stirs and moves is 'the wind,' that is, the breath; its activity is the whole group of organs of action. In this same way it also imagines the arising of shape, light, and the working of the mind.
The self that wears this subtle carrying-body stays as space within space, imagining in this way a swelling taking place within a mere spark of light.
Though unreal, it appears just like something real; Brahman remains there as if under the name 'jiva.' In this way the meaning of the word 'jiva' has fallen into confusion.
The self that wears this subtle carrying-body, shaped like a mind and a body made of space, sees, within the limit of its own imagination, a round shape resting there.
Someone knows himself as having entered water; someone else imagines himself in the form of an emperor. Each one sees, and also lives through, the coming shape of a whole universe that he imagines.
ātmagarbhagṛhaṃ cittādyathāsaṃkalpamātmanaḥ | deśakālakriyādravyakalpanāvedanaṃ sa tat || 36 ||
The inner chamber of the self, made from the mind, according to the self's own intention - that is the knowing of place, time, action, and things, all as imagined.
Imagining in this way, the maker of words binds itself with words it has invented - words like 'this is the subtle carrying-body' - inside this unreal wandering of a world.
It shines as something merely unreal, like flying through the sky in a dream. In this way, this world, though it never truly came into being, appears self-born, as if it arose on its own.
The self that wears this subtle carrying-body becomes the lord, the first Prajapati, the first maker of creatures - even when this wandering, now taking the shape of a whole universe, is complete.
na kiṃcidapi saṃpannaṃ na ca jātaṃ na dṛśyate | tadbrahmākāśamākāśameva sthitamanantakam || 40 ||
Yet nothing at all has actually come into being, nothing has been born, nothing is truly seen. That Brahman remains as mere space - it stands as simply space, without end.
saṃkalpanagarākārametatsadapi naiva sat| anirmitamarāgaṃ ca etadvai citramutthitam || 41 ||
This, though it has the shape of an imagined city and though it seems to exist, is not truly existent. Unmade, and free of any color or passion, this is indeed just a picture that has appeared.
akṛtaṃ cānubhūtaṃ ca na satyaṃ satyavatsthitam| mahākalpe vimuktatvādbramhādīnāmasaṃśayam || 42 ||
Though never made, and even though it is experienced, it is not real - it only stands as if real. In the great cycle of time, without any doubt, Brahma and the other creator gods are always free.
There is no earlier memory at all, nor any earlier cause, for the Self-born one. So, whatever kind the Self-born is, of that same kind is everything born from him understood to be.
This experience without a beginning, which exists here in things like a small forest, is like the earth and other things experienced in a dream - as they turn out to be once one wakes up.
That Self, whose nature is nothing but space, is what is remembered; the world is always only something remembered. Just as, here and there, in water, the very quality called fluidity shows itself differently in different places,
tatra tatra tathā nānyaḥ sargo'sti paramātmani | sṛṣṭirevamiyaṃ prauḍhā sama eva tvayaṃ sthitaḥ || 46 ||
in just that same way, in each and every place, there is no other creation apart from the Supreme Self. This creation, however grown and elaborate it is, is nothing but this same Self, which always stays equal and unchanging.
In this way this so-called cosmic universe shines forth, utterly pure, just like space itself. This visible world, in the same way, is in truth peaceful and still, a wandering illusion made by one's own self.
It has no support, and it supports nothing; it is without a second, and yet it is even free of the idea of oneness. Even when the world has arisen within consciousness, nothing whatsoever has actually arisen.
nādheyaṃ tatra nādhāro na dṛśyaṃ na ca draṣṭṛtā | brahmāṇḍaṃ nāsti na brahmā na ca vaitaṇḍikā kvacit || 50 ||
In it there is nothing placed and nothing to hold it up, nothing seen and no one who sees. There is no universe, no creator Brahma, and no arguer anywhere.
There is no world and no earth. Everything stands utterly at peace. Brahman alone shines, clear, in this way, the self existing in the self, through the self.
Because it is consciousness and because it is fluid, like water whirling into itself, this unreal thing appears here, and it is experienced as if it were real.
Since it is unreal, it perishes in the end, like one's own death in a dream. Or else, because it is of the nature of the self, this is indeed real, free of any flaw, unbroken, without beginning or end, its inside filled with nothing but the pure space of knowing.
Space alone is the first and highest lord of all creatures, who shines eternally by himself and is equal to emptiness. His body is subtle, not made of the gross elements. So earth and the other elements do not truly exist through him, as if they were never born.
