suṣuptaṃ svapnavadbhāti bhāti brahmaiva sargavat| sarvātmakaṃ ca tatsthānaṃ tatra tāvatkramam śṛṇu || 2 ||
Deep sleep appears like a dream, and Brahman itself appears like this creation. That state is the self of everything. Now listen to the order in which it happens.
That being has an infinite light as its own form, an infinite jewel of consciousness. From it, by its own nature, the universe arises without end, made only of pure existence.
Within itself, on its own, something moves as if becoming an object to be known — awareness not yet grasped as anything, just before the touch of 'I' comes upon it.
bhāvināmārthakalanaiḥ kiṃcidūhitārūpakam| ākāśādaṇu śuddhaṃ ca sarvasminbhāti bodhanam || 5 ||
Through the working out of the meanings of things yet to come, some guessed-at shape appears — finer than space, pure — and this knowing shines in everything.
Then that supreme existence, being conscious, leans toward becoming a knower. It becomes fit to be called 'consciousness,' since it can now, in this way, be found as something.
After that, a dense awareness comes into being, carrying the future name 'individual soul' and the like — an awareness that has taken on distinctions — when it leaves the supreme state.
That very existence, whose essence is only imagining, turns toward the cycle of birth and death. Then, by the nature of a thing, it rises up into this imagined world.
Right after this, its own existence gives rise to empty space. This space is the seed of the quality of sound and the like, and it gives meaning to what is yet to be named.
ahaṃtodeti tadanu saha vai kālasattayā | bhaviṣyadabhidhārtheṇa bījaṃ mukhyajagatsthiteḥ || 10 ||
After that, the sense of 'I' arises, together with the existence of time. Through the meaning it will one day be given a name for, it becomes the chief seed of the world's existence.
From that supreme power, a mere awareness of itself arises. This whole web of the world, though unreal in its nature, arises shining as if it were real.
Consciousness of this kind becomes the seed of the tree of thought, whose branches are imaginings. From it comes the tiny grain of ego, and then, through vibration, the wind.
The 'I' of consciousness, just that much of it, through imagining the subtle essence of sound that belongs to space, slowly condenses on its own and fully becomes its own subtle element.
That seed, which is the form of the meaning of things yet to come, of the tree whose branches are the flood of sounds, unfolds as the whole body of the Vedas — called words, sentences, and proofs.
From that, the entire glory of the world of the Supreme Self will arise, spreading out as the change and unfolding of the flood of meanings made by the flood of sounds.
Consciousness, surrounded in this way, is called by the name 'individual soul.' Through the web of future words and their meanings, it becomes the seed of the tree whose branches are the flood of forms.
That which has not yet received a name or a function, whose form flashes out from the speed of consciousness, in an instant, through imagining, becomes the subtle essence of touch.
The seed that is the spreading mass of wind, of the tree whose branches are the flood of touch — from it, the movement that drives the activity of all beings will spread out.
Right there, through the play of consciousness, light comes to be out of experience. That is the subtle essence of fire and light, which is the meaning about to be given a name.
That is the seed of the unfolding of the sun, fire, and the like, of the tree whose branches are light. From it, through the many different forms, the world will spread out.
Whose nature is the play of the water that is to come, that is the seed of the tree whose branches are taste. From it, through mutual tasting, the world will spread out.
This one, whose nature is imagining, forming the thought of a form yet to come, through the qualities that belong to imagination, comes to see the state of being the subtle essence of smell.
This is the seed that will grow into the future sphere of the earth - it is the seed-shape of the tree of forms. Because it is the self that holds up everything, the world keeps spreading out from it.
Imagined again and again by consciousness, the subtle elements keep changing into one another, on their own, without a break - like water moving inside water.
tathaitāni vimiśrāṇi viviktāni punaryathā | na śuddhānyupalabhyante sarvanāśāntameva hi || 27 ||
In this way these elements mix together, and then again separate, but they are never found pure and unmixed - not until everything is finally destroyed.
prasavaṃ paripaśyanti śataśākhaṃ sphuranti ca | paramāṇvantare bhānti kṣaṇātkalpībhavanti ca || 29 ||
They watch themselves grow out into a hundred branches, and they flash into being; they shine inside a single atom, and in one instant they turn into a whole age.
This whole group of subtle elements is that same consciousness whose nature is imagining. Having no shape of its own, it sees things that are like a tiny speck of feeling.
In the worlds, the real seed is nothing but the five subtle elements; that seed is the first power, standing there directly, with nothing between. It is that very seed which becomes everything - this is what is always felt: pure consciousness alone. Thus, unborn and first of all, from it the glory of the world comes forth.
