श्रीवसिष्ठ उवाच | हेमोर्मिकादिवन्मिथ्या कथितायाः क्षयोन्मुखम् | त्वं महत्त्वमविद्यायाः शृणु राघव कीदृशम् || १ ||

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | hemorrmikādivanmithyā kathitāyāḥ kṣayonmukham | tvaṃ mahattvamavidyāyāḥ śṛṇu rāghava kīdṛśam || 1 ||

English

Vasishtha said: Just as the golden wave is illusory, so too is the destruction of what has been described as ignorance. O Raghava, listen to the greatness of ignorance.

हिन्दी

वसिष्ठ ने कहा: जैसे सोने की लहर भ्रामक है, वैसे ही जो अज्ञान कहा गया है उसका विनाश भी भ्रामक है। हे रघुवंशी, अज्ञान की महिमा सुनो।

लवणोऽसौ महीपालस्तथा दृष्ट्वा तदा भ्रमम् | द्वितीये दिवसे गन्तुं प्रवृत्तस्तां महाटवीम् || २ ||

lavaṇo'sau mahīpālastathā dṛṣṭvā tadā bhramam | dvitīye divase gantuṃ pravṛttastāṃ mahāṭavīm || 2 ||

English

That king Lavana, having seen the illusion at that time, set out on the second day to go to that great forest.

वह राजा लवण, उस समय भ्रम देखकर, दूसरे दिन उस महान वन की ओर चल पड़ा।

यत्र दृष्टं मया दुःखमरण्यानीं स्मरामि ताम् | चित्तादर्शगतां विन्ध्यात्कदाचिल्लभ्यते हि सा || ३ ||

yatra dṛṣṭaṃ mayā duḥkhamaraṇyānīṃ smarāmi tām | cittādarśagatāṃ vindhyātkadācillabhyate hi sā || 3 ||

English

Where I saw the sorrow of the forest-dwelling woman, I remember her, who is reflected in the mirror of the mind, and who is sometimes obtained from Vindhya.

हिन्दी

जहाँ मैंने वनवासी स्त्री का दुःख देखा, मैं उसे याद करता हूँ, जो मन के दर्पण में प्रतिबिंबित है, और जो कभी-कभी विंध्य से प्राप्त होती है।

English

Having thus decided with his ministers, he set out on the southern path, again for the conquest of the directions, reaching the Vindhya mountain range.

pūrvadakṣiṇapāścātyamahārṇavataṭasthalīm | babhrāma kautukātsarvāṃ vyomavīthīmivouṣṇaguḥ || 5 ||

English

He wandered over the entire eastern, southern, and western coastal regions of the great ocean, out of curiosity, like the sun traversing the sky.

English

Then, in a certain place, he saw her as if she were a thought that had come before him | He saw the forest of the village as if it were the earth of the other world

तत्रापश्यज्जनांस्तांस्तांस्ताः स्त्रियस्ताः कुटीरकाः | नानाकाराञ्जनाधारांस्तांस्तांश्च वसुधातटान् || १० ||

tatrāpaśyajjanāṃstāṃstāṃstāḥ striyastāḥ kuṭīrakāḥ | nānākārāñjanādhārāṃstāṃstāṃśca vasudhātaṭān || 10 ||

English

There he saw those people, those women, those huts | Of various kinds, bearing people, and those earthly shores

English

Those who are deprived of their branches, those who are like trees, those who follow them, and those who are similarly addressed, those who are noble, skilled, and sons.

जो अपनी शाखाओं से वंचित हैं, जो पेड़ों के समान हैं, जो उनका अनुसरण करते हैं, और जो समान रूप से संबोधित हैं, जो आर्य, कुशल और पुत्र हैं।

English

In other elderly women, with tearful eyes, full of sorrow, she describes the countless sorrows of untimely separation from loved ones in friends.

अन्य वृद्ध महिलाओं में, आँसू भरे नेत्रों वाली, दुःख से भरी, वह दोस्तों में असंख्य दुःखों का वर्णन करती है जो अकाल में प्रियजनों से वियोग के हैं।

वृद्धा प्रवृद्धोज्ज्वलनेत्रबाष्पा कष्टं बताशुष्ककुचा कृशाङ्गी अवग्रहोग्राशनिदग्धदेशे तत्रार्तनादा परिरोदितीदम् || १३ ||

vṛddhā pravṛddhojjvalanetrabāṣpā kaṣṭaṃ batāśuṣkakucā kṛśāṅgīavagrahogrāśanidagdhadeśe tatrārtanādā pariroditīdam || 13 ||

English

The elderly woman, with bright tearful eyes, is in great distress, alas, with a dry chest and emaciated body, in a place burned by the fierce heat of the sun, she is crying out in pain.

वृद्ध महिला, चमकीले आँसू भरे नेत्रों वाली, बहुत दुःख में है, अरे, सूखी छाती और दुबले शरीर के साथ, सूर्य की तीव्र गर्मी से जले हुए स्थान पर, वह दर्द से चीख रही है।

हा पुत्रि पुत्रावृतसर्वगात्रे दिनत्रयाभोजनजर्जराङ्गिकृत्वासिना वर्मणि जीर्णदेहाः कथं क्व मुक्ता भवतासवस्ते || १४ ||

hā putri putrāvṛtasarvagātre dinatrayābhojanajarjarāṅgikṛtvāsinā varmaṇi jīrṇadehāḥ kathaṃ kva muktā bhavatāsavaste || 14 ||

English

Alas, daughter, with your whole body covered with sons, weakened by not eating for three days, lying on the ground, with a worn-out body, how and where will you be freed by you?

हाय, बेटी, तुम्हारा सारा शरीर बेटों से ढका हुआ है, तीन दिनों से भूखे रहने से कमजोर हो गया है, जमीन पर लेटी हुई है, थका हुआ शरीर के साथ, तुम कैसे और कहाँ मुक्त हो जाओगी?

तालीदलालम्बनमम्बुदाद्रौ दन्तान्तरस्थारुणसत्फलस्य स्मरामि गुञ्जाफलदाम भर्तुः पुरस्थमुद्रामरहासिनस्ते || १५ ||

tālīdalālambanamambudādrau dantāntarasthāruṇasatphalasyasmarāmi guñjāphaladāma bhartuḥ purasthamudrāmarahāsinaste || 15 ||

English

I remember the garland of guñjā fruits, the foremost sign of my husband, which is like a swing of palm leaves in the clouds, with red ripe fruits inside the teeth.

हिन्दी

मैं याद करती हूँ गुञ्जा फलों की माला, मेरे पति का अग्रणी चिह्न, जो बादलों में ताड़ के पत्तों के झूले के समान है, दाँतों के अंदर लाल पके फलों के साथ।

कदम्बजम्बीरलवङ्गगुञ्जाकुञ्जान्तरतस्तु चरत्तरक्षोः | पश्यामि पुत्रस्य कदा नु भूयो भयंकराण्युड्यतिवल्गितानि || १६ ||

kadambajambīralavaṅgaguñjākuñjāntaratastu carattarakṣoḥ | paśyāmi putrasya kadā nu bhūyo bhayaṅkarāṇyuḍyativalgitāni || 16 ||

English

When will I see my son again, who wanders in the midst of kadamba, jambira, clove, guñjā, and kuñjā trees, fearing the terrifying sounds of the demons?

na tāni kāmasya vilāsinīha mukhe'pi śobhālasitāni santi | tamālanīle cibukaikadeśe sutasya cānyāsyagatāmiṣasya || 17 ||

English

Those charming features of desire are not present even in the face of the playful beloved. In the dark blue chin of my son, who is the object of affection for others, they are not found.

वे मोहक लक्षण प्रेम के खेल-खेल में लगे प्रिय के मुख में भी नहीं हैं। मेरे पुत्र के नीले ठुड्डी में, जो दूसरों के प्रेम का विषय है, वे नहीं हैं।

सुतापनीता सह तेन भर्त्रा यमेन यस्या यमुना समाना | तमालवल्लीसहपुष्पगुच्छा समीरणेनेव वने वरेण || १८ ||

sutāpanītā saha tena bhartṛā yamen yasyā yamunā samānā | tamālavallīsahapuṣpagucchā samīraṇeneva vane vareṇa || 18 ||

English

Brought by the son, along with her husband, the Yamuna is equal to the one who is like the best breeze in the forest, adorned with tamāla flowers and clusters of blossoms.

हे पुत्री, गुंजा फलों की माला से सजी, उन्नत वक्ष और भरी स्तनों वाली, हवा में हिलते कमल के समान चमकीले रंग वाली, पत्तों जैसे वस्त्रों में सजी, और बेर और जामुन फलों के समान दाँतों वाली।

हा राजपुत्रेन्दुसमानकान्त संत्यज्य शुद्धान्तविलासिनीस्ताः | रतिं प्रयातोऽसि ममात्मजायां न सापि ते सुस्थिरतामुपेता || २० ||

hā rājaputrendusamānakānta saṃtyajya śuddhāntavilāsinīstāḥ | ratiṃ prayāto'si mamātmajāyāṃ na sāpi te susthiratāmupetā || 20 ||

English

O prince, equal to the moon in beauty, having left those pure and playful beloveds, you have gone to enjoy pleasure with my daughter. Even she has not attained stability.

हिन्दी

हे चंद्रमा के समान सुंदर राजपुत्र, उन पवित्र और खेल-खेल में लगी प्रियाओं को छोड़कर, तुम मेरी पुत्री के साथ सुख भोगने चले गए हो। उसने भी स्थिरता प्राप्त नहीं की है।

संसारनद्याः सुतरङ्गभङ्गैः क्रियाविलासैर्विहितोपहासैः | किं नाम तुच्छं न कृतं नृपेशो यद्योजितः पुष्कसकन्यकायाम् || २१ ||

saṃsāranadyāḥ sutaraṅgabhaṅgaiḥ kriyāvilāsairvihitopahāsaiḥ | kiṃ nāma tucchaṃ na kṛtaṃ nṛpeśo yadyojitaḥ puṣkasakanyakāyām || 21 ||

English

In the river of worldly existence, with the playful actions and mockery of its high waves, what insignificant thing has the king not done, being united with the daughter of Pushka?

सा त्रस्तसारङ्गसमाननेत्रा स दृप्तशार्दूलसमानवीर्यः | उभौ गतावेकपदेन नाशमाशा सहार्थेन यथा महेहा || २२ ||

sā trastasāraṅgasamānanetrā sa dṛptaśārdūlasamānavīryaḥ | ubhau gatāvekapadena nāśamāśā sahārtheṇa yathā mahehā || 22 ||

English

She, with eyes like a frightened deer, and he, with the valor of a proud lion, both met their end together, like hope and its object.

हिन्दी

mṛteśvarāśvastanijātmajāsmi durdeśayātāsmi ca durgatāsmi | durjātijātāsmi mahāpade'smi sākṣādbhayaṃ bho'smi mahāpadasmī || 23 ||

English

I am reassured by the death of the lord, I am ill-fated, I am in a miserable state, I am born in a low caste, I am in great danger, I am fear itself, I am in great peril.

हिन्दी

मैं स्वामी की मृत्यु से आश्वस्त हूँ, मैं दुर्भाग्यशाली हूँ, मैं दुःखी हूँ, मैं नीच जाति में पैदा हुआ हूँ, मैं महान संकट में हूँ, मैं भय स्वयं हूँ, मैं महान खतरे में हूँ।

नीचावमानप्रभवस्य मन्योः क्षुधाप्रपन्नस्य कलत्रकस्य | शोकस्य वृत्तावनिवार्यवृत्तेर्नार्यस्म्यनेकायतनं विनाथा || २४ ||

nīcāvamānaprabhavasya manyoḥ kṣudhāprapannasya kalatrakasya | śokasya vṛttāvanivāryavṛtter nāryasmyanekāyataṇaṃ vināthā || 24 ||

English

I am a woman without a protector, with many abodes, born from the pride of humiliation, afflicted by hunger, with a spouse, in the cycle of unavoidable sorrow.

हिन्दी

मैं एक बेबस स्त्री हूँ, जिसके कई घर हैं, अपमान के गर्व से उत्पन्न, भूख से पीड़ित, पति के साथ, अनिवार्य दुःख के चक्र में।

दैवोपतप्तस्य विबान्धवस्य मूढस्य रूढस्य महाधिभूमौ | यत्प्राणनं यन्मरणं महापद्यस्यात्मनिर्जीवितमुत्तमं तत् || २५ ||

daivopataptasya vibāndhavasya mūḍhasya rūḍhasya mahādhibhūmau | yatprāṇanaṃ yanmaraṇaṃ mahāpadyasyātmanirjīvitamuttamaṃ tat || 25 ||

English

For one who is afflicted by fate, without relatives, foolish, and firmly established in great sorrow, the best release of the self is either living or dying in that great calamity.

जो भाग्य से पीड़ित है, बिना रिश्तेदारों के, मूर्ख, और महान दुःख में दृढ़ता से स्थापित है, उसके लिए स्वयं को उस महान आपत्ति में जीना या मरना सबसे उत्तम मुक्ति है।

जनैर्विहीनस्य कुदेशवृत्तेर्दुःखान्यनन्तानि समुल्लसन्तिसहस्रशाखारससङ्कुलानि तृणानि वर्षास्विव पर्वतस्य || २६ ||

janairvihīnasya kudeśavṛtterduḥkhānyanantāni samullasantisahasraśākhārasasaṃkulāni tṛṇāni varṣāsviva parvatasya || 26 ||

English

For the one who is devoid of people, the miseries of a bad country arise endlessly, like the thousand-branched grasses that sprout on a mountain during the rainy season.

हिन्दी

जिसके पास लोग नहीं हैं, उसके लिए एक बुरे देश की पीड़ाएँ अनन्त रूप से उत्पन्न होती हैं, जैसे वर्षा के मौसम में पहाड़ पर हजारों शाखाओं वाली घास उगती है।

एवं लपन्तीं स्वकलत्रवृद्धां दासीभिराश्वास्य नृपः स्त्रियं ताम् | पप्रच्छ किंवृत्तमिहैव का च का ते सुता कश्च सुतस्तवेति || २७ ||

evaṃ lapantīṃ svakalatravṛddhāṃ dāsībhirāśvāsya nṛpaḥ striyaṃ tām | papraccha kiṃvṛttamihaiava kā ca kā te sutā kaśca sutastaveti || 27 ||

English

Thus, consoling his aged wife who was lamenting with the help of maidservants, the king asked her, 'What happened here? Who is she? Who is your daughter and who is your son?'

uvāca sā bāṣpavilocanātha grāmastvayaṃ puṣpasaghōṣanāmā | ihābhavatpuṣkasakaḥ patirmē babhūva tasyendusamā sutaikā || 28 ||

English

She said with tearful eyes, 'This village is named Pushpasaghoshana. Here, my husband Pushkasaka lived. He had a daughter as beautiful as the moon.'

उसने आँसुओं से भरी आँखों से कहा, 'यह गाँव पुष्पसघोषना नाम से जाना जाता है। यहाँ मेरा पति पुष्कसक रहता था। उसकी एक चाँद जैसी सुंदर बेटी थी।'

सा दैवयोगात्पतिमिन्द्रतुल्यमिहागतं दैववशेन भूपम् | अयं विशीर्णं मधुकुम्भमाप वने वराकी करभी यथैका || २९ ||

sā daivayogātpatimindratulyamihāgataṃ daivavaśena bhūpam | ayaṃ viśīrṇaṃ madhukumbhamāpa vane varākī karabhī yathaikā || 29 ||

English

By fate, she got a husband equal to Indra who came here by divine will. He, like a she-elephant in the forest, obtained a broken pot of honey.

हिन्दी

सा तेन सार्धं सुचिरं सुखानि भुक्त्वा प्रसूता तनयाः सुतांश्च | वृद्धिं गता काननकोटरेऽस्मिंस्तुम्बीलता पादपसंश्रितेव || ३० ||

sā tena sārdhaṃ suciraṃ sukhāni bhuktvā prasūtā tanayāḥ sutāṃśca | vṛddhiṃ gatā kānanakoṭare'smiṃs tumbīlatā pādapasaṃśriteva || 30 ||

English

She, along with him, enjoyed happiness for a long time and gave birth to sons and daughters. She grew up in this forest cave, like a creeper supported by a tree.
