śrīrāma uvāca idaṃ rūpamidaṃ dṛśyaṃ jagannāstīti bhāsuram mahāpralayasaṃprāptau bho brahmankeva tiṣṭhati || 1 ||

English

Rama said, this form, this world we see, shining as if it does not exist, when the great dissolution comes, master, where does it stay?

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca kuta āyāti kīdṛgvā vandhyāputraḥ kva gacchati kva yāti kuta āyāti vada vā vyomakānanam || 2 ||

English

Vasishtha said, where does the son of a barren woman come from, and what does he look like? Where does he go, where does he walk, where does he come from, tell me this too, and also about a forest in the sky.

śrīrāma uvāca vandhyāputro vyomavanaṃ naivāsti na bhaviṣyati kīdṛśī dṛśyatā tasya kīdṛśī tasya nāstitā || 3 ||

English

Rama said, the son of a barren woman and the forest in the sky neither exist now nor will they ever exist. What kind of appearance can such a thing have, and what kind of nonexistence can it have?

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca vandhyāputravyomavane yathā na staḥ kadācana jagadādyakhilaṃ dṛśyaṃ tathā nāsti kadācana || 4 ||

English

Vasishtha said, just as the son of a barren woman and the forest in the sky never exist at any time, in the same way this whole visible world, from the very beginning, never exists at any time.

na cotpannē na ca dhvaṃsi yatkilādau na vidyate utpattiḥ kīdṛśī tasya nāśaśabdasya kā kathā || 5 ||

English

That which truly never existed at the start is neither born nor destroyed. What kind of birth could it have, and what is there even to say about its so-called destruction?

śrīrāma uvāca | vandhyāputranabhovṛkṣakalpanā tāvadasti hi | sā yathā nāśajanmāḍhyā tathaivedaṃ na kiṃ bhavet || 6 ||

English

Rama said, at least the idea of the sky-forest of the barren woman's son does exist, as an idea. Just as that idea can be spoken of as having a birth and a destruction, why could this world not be the same?

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | tulyasyātuladuḥsthasya bhāvakaiḥ kila tolanam | niranvayā yathaivoktirjagatsattā tathaiva hi || 7 ||

English

Vasishtha said, to weigh something that has no real ground against something comparable is just the work of imagination. Just as a statement with no real connection behind it is empty talk, so too is the existence of the world.

yathā sauvarṇakaṭake dṛśyamānamidaṃ sphuṭam | kaṭakatvaṃ tu naivāsti jagattvaṃ na tathā pare || 8 ||

English

Just as, in a gold bracelet, the bracelet is clearly seen, but being a bracelet does not really exist apart from the gold, in the same way, being the world does not exist apart from the Supreme.

ākāśe ca yathā nāstiśūnyatvaṃ vyatirekavat | jagattvaṃ brahmaṇi tathā nāstyevāpyupalabdhimat || 9 ||

English

Just as, in the sky, emptiness does not exist as something separate from the sky itself, in the same way being the world does not exist in Brahman as something separate, even though it seems to be perceived.

kajjalānna yathā kārṣṇyaṃ śaityaṃ ca na yathā himāt | pṛthagevaṃ bhavedbuddhaṃ jagannāsti pare pade || 10 ||

English

Just as blackness is not separate from soot, and coldness is not separate from snow, understand it the same way, the world does not exist as something separate in the highest state.

yathā śaityaṃ na śaśino na himādvyatiricyate | brahmaṇo na tathā sargo vidyate vyatirekavān || 11 ||

English

Just as coldness is not separate from the moon, and is not separate from snow, in the same way creation is not something separate from Brahman.

marunadyāṃ yathā toyaṃ dvitīyendau yathendutā | nāstyeveha jagannāma dṛṣṭamapyamalātmani || 12 ||

English

Like the water in a desert mirage, like the moon-ness in a reflected second moon, in the same way, here, the so-called world, even though it is seen, does not exist in the pure Self.

ādāveva hi yannāsti kāraṇāsaṃbhavātsvayam | vartamāne'pi tannāsti nāśaḥ syāttatra kīdṛśaḥ || 13 ||

English

That which truly did not exist at the beginning, because its own cause could never arise, does not exist even now, in the present. What kind of destruction could there be of it?

kvāsaṃbhavadbhūtajāḍyaṃ pṛthvyāderjadavastunaḥ | kāryakāraṇaṃ bhavituṃ śaktaṃ chāyāyāścātapo yathā || 14 ||

English

How can the impossible dullness of lifeless things like earth ever become a cause and effect, any more than shade can become sunlight?

kāraṇābhāvataḥ kāryaṃ nedaṃ tatkiṃcanoditam | yattatkāraṇamevāsti tadevettthamavasthitam || 15 ||

English

Since there is no real cause, this effect has not arisen at all. Only the cause truly exists, that alone stands as it is.

ajñānam eva yad bhāti saṃvidābhāsam eva tat yaj jagad dṛśyate svapne saṃvit kacanam eva tat || 16 ||

English

What shines forth as ignorance is only a semblance of consciousness. The world that is seen in a dream is only a glimmer of consciousness.

saṃvit kacanam evāntaryathā svapne jagad bhramaḥ sargādau brahmaṇi tathā jagat kacanam ātatam || 17 ||

English

Just as, within, it is only a glimmer of consciousness that appears as the illusion of a world in a dream, in the same way, at the start of creation, in Brahman, the world is a glimmer of consciousness spread out.

yad idaṃ dṛśyate kiṃcit sadaivātmani saṃsthitam nāstam eti na codeti jagat kiṃcit kadācana || 18 ||

English

Whatever is seen here always remains situated in the Self alone. The world never truly sets, and it never truly rises, at any time.

yathā dravatvaṃ salilaṃ spandanaṃ pavano yathā yathā prakāśa ābhāso brahmaiva trijagat tathā || 19 ||

English

Just as fluidity is water, and vibration is wind, and light is radiance, in the same way the three worlds are Brahman itself.

yathā puram ivāste'ntarvideva svapnasamvidaḥ tathā jagad ivābhāti svātmaiva paramātmani || 20 ||

English

Just as a city seems to exist within, being only the consciousness of a dream, in the same way the world appears to exist, while it is only one's own Self within the Supreme Self.

śrīrāma uvāca | evaṃ cettatkathaṃ brahmansughanapratyayaṃ vada | idaṃ dṛśyaviṣaṃ jātamasatsvapnānubhūtivat || 21 ||

English

Rama said, if this is so, then, master, tell me how this firm conviction has come about, that this poisonous visible world, though unreal, has arisen, like the experience of a dream.

sati dṛśye kila draṣṭā sati draṣṭari dṛśyatā | ekasattve dvayorbando mukttirekakṣaye dvayoḥ || 22 ||

English

When the seen thing exists, there is indeed a seer, when the seer exists, there is something seen. When either one of the two truly exists, both are bound, when either one of the two is destroyed, there is freedom for both.

atyantāsaṃbhavo yāvadbuddho dṛśyasya na kṣayaḥ | tāvaddraṣṭari dṛśyatvaṃ na saṃbhavati mokṣadhīḥ || 23 ||

English

As long as the complete unreality of the seen world is not fully understood and it has not ceased, so long the seer keeps having something to see, and the thought of liberation is not possible.

dṛśyaṃ cetsaṃbhavatyādau paścātkṣayamupālabhet | taddṛśyasmaraṇānartharūpo bandho na śāmyati || 24 ||

English

If the seen world were to first come into being and only afterward reach destruction, then the bondage caused by the memory of that seen world would never come to rest.

yatra kvacana saṃsthasya svādarśasyeva cidgateḥ | pratibimbo lagatyeva sarvasmṛtimayo hyalam || 25 ||

English

In whatever place it stands, the movement of consciousness is just like a person's own mirror - a reflection made entirely of memory always clings to it and appears there.

ādāveva hi notpannaṃ dṛśyaṃ nāstyeva cetsvayamdraṣṭurdṛśyasvabhāvatvāttatsaṃbhavati muktatā || 26 ||

English

From the very start, the seen world was never really born; it has no existence of its own at all. And because the seer's own nature is only to see, this is how freedom becomes possible.

tasmādasaṃbhavanmuktermama protsārya yuktibhiḥatyantāsaṃbhavo yāvatkathayātmavidāṃ vara || 27 ||

English

So, best of those who know the Self, push away with your reasons this feeling of mine that freedom is impossible - keep speaking until this feeling of utter impossibility is fully removed.

śrīvasiṣṭha uvācaasadeva sadā bhāti jagatsarvātmakaṃ yathāśrṛṇvahaṃ kathayā rāma dīrghayā kathayāmi te || 28 ||

English

Sri Vasishtha said: What is unreal always shines as this whole world made of everything. Listen, Rama, I will tell you this through a long account.

vyavasāyakathāvākyairyāvattatrānuvarṇitamna viśrāmyati te tāvaddhṛdi pāṃsuryathā hrade || 29 ||

English

As long as what is told here through these words of explanation and story does not settle in your heart, it will stay unsettled there - like dust stirred up in a lake.

atyantābhāvamasyāstvaṃ jagatsargabhramasthiteḥbuddhaikadhyānaniṣṭhātmā vyavahāraṃ kariṣyasi || 30 ||

English

Once you see that this whole confusion of the world's creation is utterly unreal, with your mind fixed only on that awakened understanding, you will then carry on your daily dealings.

bhāvābhāvagrahotsargasthūlasūkṣmachalācalāḥ | dṛśastvāṃ vedhayiṣyanti na mahādrimiveṣavaḥ || 31 ||

English

Sights made of existence and non-existence, of holding on and letting go, of gross and subtle, of moving and unmoving - none of these will pierce you, just as arrows cannot pierce a great mountain.

English

This one Self alone truly is; there is no imagining of a second one. How the world arose here - that I will now tell you, Raghava.

tasmādimāni sakalāni vijṛmbhitāni so'pīdamanga sakalāsakalaṃ mahātmā | rūpāvalokanamanomananaprakārā kārāspadaṃ svayamudeti vilīyate ca || 33 ||

English

So all these worlds are only its own unfolding. This great Self, dear one, is itself both whole and without parts - through its way of looking at forms and its way of thinking with the mind, it itself rises up as the ground of all this activity, and it itself dissolves again.
