श्रीवसिष्ठ उवाच | इमां सप्तपदां ज्ञानभूमिमाकर्णयानघ | नानया ज्ञातया भूयो मोहपङ्के निमज्जसि || १ ||

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | imāṃ saptapadāṃ jñānabhūmimākarṇayānagha | nānayā jñātayā bhūyo mohapaṅke nimajjasi || 1 ||

English

Shri Vasishtha said: Listen to this seven-stage path of knowledge, O sinless one | With this knowledge, you will not sink again into the mire of delusion

श्री वसिष्ठ ने कहा: हे निष्पाप, इस सात चरणों वाली ज्ञान भूमि को सुनो | इस ज्ञान के द्वारा तुम फिर से मोह के दलदल में नहीं डूबोगे

वदन्ति बहुभेदेन वादिनो योगभूमिकाः | मम त्वभिमता नूनमिमा एव शुभप्रदाः || २ ||

vadanti bahubhedena vādino yogabhūmikāḥ | mama tvabhimatā nūnamimā eva śubhapradāḥ || 2 ||

English

The debaters speak of the stages of yoga in many different ways | But in my opinion, these seven stages are indeed the bestowers of auspiciousness

अवबोधं विदुर्ज्ञानं तदिदं सप्तभूमिकम् | मुक्तिस्तु ज्ञेयमित्युक्तं भूमिकासप्तकात्परम् || ३ ||

avabodhaṃ vidurjñānaṃ tadidaṃ saptabhūmikam | muktistu jñeyamityuktaṃ bhūmikāsaptakātparam || 3 ||

English

Enlightenment is known as knowledge, and this is the seven-stage path | Liberation is said to be beyond these seven stages

सत्यावबोधो मोक्षश्चैवेति पर्यायनामनी | सत्यावबोधो जीवोऽयं नेह भूयः प्ररोहति || ४ ||

satyāvabodho mokṣaścaiveti paryāyanāmanī | satyāvabodho jīvo'yaṃ neha bhūyaḥ prarohati || 4 ||

English

True enlightenment and liberation are synonymous terms | One who is truly enlightened does not grow again in this world

सत्य अवबोध और मोक्ष पर्यायवाची शब्द हैं | जो सचमुच जागरूक है, वह इस दुनिया में फिर से नहीं बढ़ता

ज्ञानभूमिः शुभेच्छाख्या प्रथमा समुदाहृताविचारणा द्वितीया तु तृतीया तनुमानसा || ५ ||

jñānabhūmiḥ śubhecchākhyā prathamā samudāhṛtāvicāraṇā dvitīyā tu tṛtīyā tanumānasā || 5 ||

English

The first stage of knowledge is called the desire for the good. The second is investigation, and the third is the refinement of the mind.

हिन्दी

ज्ञान का पहला चरण कल्याण की इच्छा कहलाता है। दूसरा विचार है, और तीसरा मन का शुद्धिकरण है।

सत्त्वापत्तिश्चतुर्थी स्यात्ततोऽसंसक्तिनामिकापदार्थाभावनी षष्ठी सप्तमी तुर्यगा स्मृता || ६ ||

sattvāpattiścaturthī syāttato'saṃsaktināmikāpadārthābhāvanī ṣaṣṭhī saptamī turyagā smṛtā || 6 ||

English

The fourth stage is the attainment of purity, the fifth is the absence of attachment, the sixth is the absence of objects, and the seventh is known as the transcendent state.

चौथी अवस्था शुद्धता की प्राप्ति है, पांचवीं आसक्ति का अभाव है, छठी वस्तुओं का अभाव है, और सातवीं परम अवस्था कहलाती है।

आसामंते स्थिता मुक्तिस्तस्यां भूयो न शोच्यतेएतासां भूमिकानां त्वमिदं निर्वचनं शृणु || ७ ||

āsāmante sthitā muktistasyāṃ bhūyo na śocyateetāsāṃ bhūmikānāṃ tvamidaṃ nirvacanaṃ śrṛṇu || 7 ||

English

Liberation is established at the end of these stages, and there is no further sorrow in that state. Listen to this explanation of these stages.

स्थितः किं मूढ एवास्मि प्रेक्ष्येऽहं शास्त्रसज्जनैःवैराग्यपूर्वमिच्छेति शुभेच्छेत्युच्यते बुधैः || ८ ||

sthitaḥ kiṃ mūḍha evāsmi prekṣye'haṃ śāstrasajjanaiḥvairāgyapūrvamiccheti śubhecchetyucyate budhaiḥ || 8 ||

English

Am I just a fool? I will observe with the help of scriptures and wise people. It is said by the wise that one should desire with detachment first.

हिन्दी

क्या मैं एक मूर्ख हूँ? मैं शास्त्रों और ज्ञानी लोगों की सहायता से देखूंगा। बुद्धिमान लोग कहते हैं कि पहले वैराग्य से इच्छा करनी चाहिए।

शास्त्रसज्जनसंपर्कवैराग्याभ्यासपूर्वकम्सदाचारप्रवृत्तिर्या प्रोच्यते सा विचारणा || ९ ||

śāstrasajjanasaṃparkavairāgyābhyāsapūrvakamsadācārapravṛttiryā procyate sā vicāraṇā || 9 ||

English

The constant practice of good conduct, preceded by association with scriptures, wise people, and the practice of detachment, is called vicāraṇā.

हिन्दी

शास्त्रों, ज्ञानी लोगों और वैराग्य के अभ्यास से पहले सदाचार की निरंतर प्रवृत्ति विचारणा कहलाती है।

विचारणाशुभेच्छाभ्यामिन्द्रियार्थेष्वसक्ततायात्र सा तनुता भावात्प्रोच्यते तनुमानसा || १० ||

vicāraṇāśubhecchābhyāmindriyārtheṣvasaktatāyātra sā tanutā bhāvātprocyate tanumānasā || 10 ||

English

Here, the subtlety that arises from the absence of attachment to sense objects due to vicāraṇā and good desires is called tanumānasā.

हिन्दी

यहाँ, विचारणा और शुभ इच्छाओं से इंद्रियों के विषयों में आसक्ति के अभाव से उत्पन्न सूक्ष्मता को तनुमानसा कहा जाता है।

भूमिकात्रितयाभ्यासाच्चित्तेऽर्थे विरतेर्वशात् | सत्यात्मनि स्थितिः शुद्धे सत्त्वापत्तिरुदाहृता || ११ ||

bhūmikātritayābhyāsāccitte'rthe viratervaśāt | satyātmani sthitiḥ śuddhe sattvāpattirudāhṛtā || 11 ||

English

By the practice of the three stages, the mind becomes detached from objects, and one attains a pure state of being established in the true self, which is known as the attainment of sattva.

तीन चरणों के अभ्यास से, मन वस्तुओं से विरक्त हो जाता है, और एक शुद्ध स्थिति में स्थापित होता है जो सत्त्व की प्राप्ति के रूप में जाना जाता है।

दशाचतुष्टयाभ्यासादसंसङ्गफलेन च | रूढसत्त्वचमत्कारात्प्रोक्ताऽसंसक्तिनामिका || १२ ||

daśācatuṣṭayābhyāsādasasaṅgaphalena ca | rūḍhasattvacamatkārātproktā'saṃsaktināmikā || 12 ||

English

By the practice of the four states and the result of non-attachment, and from the established delight in sattva, it is said to be called non-attachment.

चार अवस्थाओं के अभ्यास और असंगता के फलस्वरूप, और सत्त्व में स्थापित आनंद से, यह असंगता कहलाता है।

भूमिकापञ्चकाभ्यासात्स्वात्मारामतया दृढम् | आभ्यन्तराणां बाह्यानां पदार्थानामभावनात् || १३ ||

bhūmikāpañcakābhyāsātsvātmārāmatayā dṛḍham | ābhyantarāṇāṃ bāhyānāṃ padārthānāmabhāvanāt || 13 ||

English

By the practice of the five stages, firmly established in self-contentment, and by the non-perception of internal and external objects.

पाँच चरणों के अभ्यास से, आत्म-संतोष में दृढ़ता से स्थापित होकर, और आंतरिक और बाह्य वस्तुओं की अनुभूति के अभाव से।

परप्रयुक्तेन चिरं प्रयत्नेनार्थभावनात् | पदार्थाभावनानाम्नी षष्ठी संजायते गतिः || १४ ||

paraprayuktena ciraṃ prayatnena'rthabhāvanāt | padārthābhāvanānāmnī ṣaṣṭhī saṃjāyate gatiḥ || 14 ||

English

By the long effort of another, from the perception of objects, the sixth stage of non-perception of objects is attained.

दूसरे के लंबे प्रयास से, वस्तुओं की अनुभूति से, वस्तुओं की अनुभूति के अभाव की छठी अवस्था प्राप्त होती है।

भूमिषट्रुचिराभ्यासाद्भेदस्यानुपलम्भतः | यत्स्वभावैकनिष्ठत्वं सा ज्ञेया तुर्यगा गतिः || १५ ||

bhūmiṣaṭrucirābhyāsādbhedasyānupalambhataḥ | yatsvabhāvaikanṣṭhatvaṃ sā jñeyā turyagā gatiḥ || 15 ||

English

By the long practice of the six stages, due to the non-perception of differences, that which is solely established in its own nature is known as the fourth stage.

छह चरणों के लंबे अभ्यास से, भेद के अनुभव के अभाव से, जो अपने स्वभाव में स्थापित है, वह चौथी अवस्था के रूप में जाना जाता है।

एषा हि जीवन्मुक्तेषु तुर्यावस्थेह विद्यते | विदेहमुक्तिविषयस्तुर्यातीतमतः परम् || १६ ||

eṣā hi jīvanmukteṣu turyāvasthēha vidyatē | vidēhamuktiviṣayasturyātītamataḥ param || 16 ||

English

This state indeed exists in the liberated while living in the fourth state | Beyond the state of liberation after death, this is the supreme

यह अवस्था जीवन्मुक्तों में चौथी अवस्था में होती है | विदेह मुक्ति के विषय में, तुर्यातीत इससे परे है

ये हि राम महाभागाः सप्तमीं भूमिकां गताः | आत्मारामा महात्मानस्ते महत्पदमागताः || १७ ||

yē hi rāma mahābhāgāḥ saptamīṃ bhūmikāṃ gatāḥ | ātmārāmā mahātmānastē mahatpadamāgatāḥ || 17 ||

English

Those who, O Rama, are greatly fortunate and have reached the seventh stage | They are self-realized great souls who have attained the great state

वे जो, हे राम, महान भाग्यशाली हैं और सातवीं अवस्था तक पहुंचे हैं | वे आत्माराम महात्मा हैं जिन्होंने महान पद प्राप्त किया है

जीवन्मुक्ता न सज्जन्ति सुखदुःखरसस्थितौ | प्रकृतेनार्थकार्याणि किंचित्कुर्वन्ति वा न वा || १८ ||

jīvanmuktā na sajjanti sukhaduḥkharasasthitau | prakṛtenārthakāryāṇi kiṃcitkurvanti vā na vā || 18 ||

English

The liberated while living do not get attached to pleasure and pain | They perform worldly duties naturally, whether they do something or not

हिन्दी

जीवन्मुक्त सुख-दुःख में आसक्त नहीं होते | वे प्राकृतिक रूप से लोक के कार्य करते हैं, चाहे वे कुछ करें या न करें

पार्श्वस्थबोधिताः सन्तः सर्वाचारक्रमागतम् | आचारमाचरन्त्येव सुप्रबुद्धवदक्षतम् || १९ ||

pārśvasthabodhitāḥ santaḥ sarvācārakramāgatam | ācāramācarantyeva suprabudhavadakṣatam || 19 ||

English

Those who are enlightened and present, follow all the prescribed conduct | They perform their duties with great wisdom and without harm

ātmārāmatayā tāṃstu sukhayanti na kāścana | jagatkriyāḥ susaṃsuptānrūpālokāḥ striyo yathā || 20 ||

English

Those who are self-realized do not delight in worldly activities | Just as beautiful women do not please those who are deeply asleep

भूमिकासप्तकं चैतद्धीमतामेव गोचरम् | न पशुस्थावरादीनां न च म्लेच्छादिचेतसाम् || २१ ||

bhūmikāsaptakaṃ caitaddhīmatāmeva gocaram | na paśusthāvarādīnāṃ na ca mlecchādicetasām || 21 ||

English

This set of seven stages is accessible only to the wise | Not to animals, plants, and the like, nor to those of barbarian minds

English

Those who have attained this state of knowledge, whether animals or barbarians, with or without a body, are indeed liberated, there is no doubt about it

Knowledge is indeed the cutting of the knot, and in that, there is liberation | That is the essence of peace, like the illusion of a mirage

ये तु मोहात्समुत्तीर्णा न प्राप्ताः पावनं पदम् | आस्थिता भूमिकास्वासु स्वात्मलाभपरायणाः || २४ ||

ye tu mohātsamuttīrṇā na prāptāḥ pāvanaṃ padam | āsthitā bhūmikāsvāsu svātmalābhaparāyaṇāḥ || 24 ||

English

Those who have risen above delusion but have not attained the purifying state | Remain in their respective stages, striving for self-realization

sarvabhūmigatāḥ kecitkeciddvitraikabhūmikāḥ | bhūmiṣaḍrugatāḥ kecitkecitsaptakabhūmikāḥ || 25 ||

English

Some are present in all stages, some in two or three stages, some in six stages, and some in seven stages

Some are in the three worlds, some have reached the end of the earth | Some are in the four worlds, some are in the two worlds

Some share parts of the earth, some are in one and a half worlds | Some are in three and a half worlds, others are in six and a half worlds

Discerning men move in the world, thus in the realms | They are established in the influences of planetary positions and austerities

te hi dhīrāḥ surājāno daśāsvāsu jayanti ye | tṛṇāyate'tra digdanti ghaṭābhaṭaparājayaḥ || 29 ||

English

Those who are truly wise and noble kings conquer in these ten states | Here, even a blade of grass can defeat an army

ye tāsu bhūmiṣu jayanti hi ye mahānto vandyāsta eva hi jitendriyaśatravaste | samrāḍvirāḍapi ca yatra tṛṇāyate vai tasmātparaṃ jagati te samavāpnuvanti || 30 ||

English

Those who conquer in these realms are truly great and worthy of praise, they are the conquerors of the senses | Even the emperor and the king are defeated there, therefore they attain the highest in the world
