śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | yasmiṃstasminpadārthe hi yena tena yathā tathā | tīvrasaṃvegasampannaṃ manaḥ paśyati vāñchitam || 1 ||

English

Śrīvasiṣṭha said: Whatever the object, the mind, filled with intense passion, sees it as desired.

jāyate mriyate caiṣā manasastīvravegitā | saumyāmbubudbudālīva nirnimittā svabhāvataḥ || 2 ||

English

This intense passion of the mind arises and perishes, like the bubbles in calm water, without any cause, by its own nature.

śītatā tuhinasyeva kajjalasyeva kṛṣṇatā | lolatā manaso rūpaṃ tīvrātīvraikarūpiṇī || 3 ||

English

Just as coldness is the nature of snow and blackness is the nature of kohl, so too is the nature of the mind's restlessness, intense and varied.

śrīrāma uvāca | kathamasyātilolasyā vego vegaikakāraṇam | calatā manaso brahmanbalato vinivāryate || 4 ||

English

Śrīrāma said: How can the intense restlessness of this very restless mind be controlled by strength alone, O Brahman?

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | neha cañcalatāhīnaṃ manaḥ kvacana dṛśyate | cañcalatvaṃ manodharmo vahṇerdharmo yathoṣṇatā || 5 ||

English

Śrīvasiṣṭha said: The mind is never seen without restlessness, just as heat is the nature of fire.

yaiṣā hi cañcalā spandaśakticittatvasaṃsthitā | tāṃ viddhi mānasīṃ śaktiṃ jagadāḍambarātmikām || 6 ||

English

Know this restless power, which is situated in the nature of the mind, to be the mental power that is the essence of the universe.

spandāspandādṛte vāyoryathā sattaiava nohyate | tathā na cittasattāsti cañcalaspandanādṛte || 7 ||

English

Just as the existence of air is not perceived without movement and non-movement, similarly, the existence of the mind is not perceived without the restless vibration.

yattu cañcalatāhīnaṃ tanmano mṛtamucyate | tadeva ca tapahśāstrasiddhānto mokṣa ucyate || 8 ||

English

That which is devoid of restlessness is called the dead mind. That very state is also called the ultimate goal of austerity and scriptures, which is liberation.

manovilayamātreṇa duḥkhaśāntiravāpyate | manomananamātreṇa duḥkhaṃ paramavāpyate || 9 ||

English

By the mere dissolution of the mind, peace is attained. By the mere contemplation of the mind, great suffering is attained.

duḥkhamutpādayatyuccerutthitaścittarākṣasaḥ | sukhāyānanantabhogāya taṃ prayatnena pātaya || 10 ||

English

The demon of the mind, when it arises, produces suffering. For the sake of eternal bliss, destroy it with effort.

tasya cañcalatā yaiṣā tvavidyā rāma socyate | vāsanāpadanāmnīṃ tāṃ vicāreṇa vināśaya || 11 ||

English

O Rama, this restlessness is called ignorance. Destroy it by contemplation, which is known as the elimination of desires.

By the dissolution of ignorance and desires, which reside in the mind, the supreme good is attained through renunciation.

yattatsadasator madhyaṃ yanmadhyaṃ cittvajāḍyayoḥ | tanmanaḥ procyate rāma dvayordolāyitākṛti || 13 ||

English

That which is the middle between existence and non-existence, and the middle between consciousness and inertia, is called the mind, O Rama, which oscillates between the two.

jāḍyānusandhānahataṃ jāḍyātmakatayeddhayā | ceto jaḍatvamāyāti dṛḍhābhyāsavaśena hi || 14 ||

English

The mind, struck by the pursuit of inertia, becomes inert due to the strong practice of identifying with inertia.

vivekaikānusandhānāccidaṃśātmatayā manaḥ | cidekatāmupāyāti dṛḍhābhyāsavaśādiha || 15 ||

English

The mind, through the constant pursuit of discrimination, attains the state of pure consciousness due to the strong practice of identifying with consciousness.

pauruṣeṇa prayatnena yasminneva pade manaḥ| pātyate tatpadaṃ prāpya bhavatyabhyāsato hi tat || 16 ||

English

By human effort and endeavor, wherever the mind is directed, it attains that state through practice.

punaḥ pauruṣamāśritya cittamākramya cetasā| viśokaṃ padamāśritya nirāśaṅkaḥ sthiro bhava || 17 ||

English

Again, relying on human effort, control the mind with consciousness, and taking refuge in the state of sorrowlessness, become steady and fearless.

bhavabhāvanayā magnaṃ manasaiva na cenmanaḥ| balāduttāryate rāma tadupāyo'sti netaraḥ || 18 ||

English

O Rama, if the mind, immersed in worldly thoughts, cannot be uplifted by the mind itself, then there is no other means to uplift it by force.

mana eva samarthaṃ vo manaso dṛḍhanigrahe| arājā kaḥ samarthaḥ syādrājño rāghava nigrahe || 19 ||

English

O Raghava, who else but the mind is capable of firmly controlling the mind? Who else but the king is capable of controlling the king?

tṛṣṇāgrāhagṛhītānāṃ saṃsārārṇavaraṃhasi| āvartairuhyamānānāṃ dūre svaṃ mana eva nauḥ || 20 ||

English

In the vast ocean of worldly existence, those who are seized by the crocodile of desire are carried away by the whirlpools. Far away, the mind itself is the boat.

Only by the mind can the mind be cut, the supreme bondage | The self is not released by which it is not bound by another || 21 ||

English

Whatever is experienced, the non-experience of it is supreme | Non-awareness is liberation, suffering arises from experience || 25 ||

English

By one's own effort, a person realizes the absence of worldly desires in an instant. Therefore, one should always cultivate that state for prosperity.

The desires such as attachment that are dear to the mind, understand them to be unreal. Abandoning their root cause, do not indulge in joy or sorrow, be content.
