13.111.1

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | asya cittamahāvyādheścikitsāyā mahauṣadham | svāyattaṃ śṛṇu vakṣyāmi sādhu susvādu niścitam || 1 ||

Sri Vasishtha said: Listen, I will tell you the great medicine to cure this great disease called the mind. It is in your own hands, it is good, it is truly pleasant, and it is certain to work.

svenaiva pauruṣeṇāśu svasaṃvedanarūpiṇā | yatnena cittavetālastyaktveṣṭaṃ vastu jīyate || 2 ||

Through one's own effort alone, quickly, using one's own awareness, the ghost called the mind is conquered by giving up the thing one desires.

tyajannabhimataṃ vastu yastiṣṭhati nirāmayaḥ | jitameva manastena kudanta iva dantinā || 3 ||

One who gives up what he desires and stays free of trouble, by him the mind is truly conquered, like an elephant breaking off its own bad tusk.

svasaṃvedanayatnena pālyate cittabālakaḥ | avastuto vastuni ca yojyate bodhyate'pi ca || 4 ||

The mind, like a child, is cared for through the effort of self-awareness. It is turned away from what is unreal toward what is real, and it is also taught to understand.

śāstrasatsaṅgadhīreṇa cintātaptamatāpinā | chindhi tvamāyasenāyo manasaiava mano mune || 5 ||

O sage, made steady by scripture and the company of good people, unburned even amid the heat of worry, cut the mind with the mind itself, as iron is cut by iron.

ayatnena yathā bāla itaścetaśca yojyate | bhāvais tathaiva cetontaḥ kim ivātrāsti duṣkaram || 6 ||

Just as a child, with no effort, is led this way and that, so too the mind can be turned inward through right thoughts. What is hard about that?

satkarmaṇi samākrāntamudarkodayadāyini | svapauruṣeṇaiva manaścetanena niyojayet || 7 ||

One should use one's own conscious effort to direct the mind, even when it is overwhelmed, toward good action, action that brings a good result later.

svāyattamekāntahitaṃ svepsitatyāgavedanam | yasya duṣkratāṃ yātaṃ dhiktaṃ puruṣakīṭakam || 8 ||

This practice, giving up what one wants, is entirely in one's own hands and wholly good for one. Shame on the man, that mere worm of a man, for whom it has become too hard.

aramyaṃ ramyarūpeṇa bhāvayitvā svasaṃvidā | mallenaiva śiśuścittamayatnenaiva jīyate || 9 ||

The mind, through its own imagining, turns what is unpleasant into what seems pleasant, yet this very mind is conquered without effort, the way a wrestler overpowers a child.

pauruṣeṇa prayatnena cittamāśveva jīyate | acittena prayatnena padaṃ brahmaṇi dīyate || 10 ||

Through one's own determined effort, the mind is conquered very quickly. Then, once one is free of mind, without any further effort, a place in Brahman is granted.

svāyattaṃ ca susādhyaṃ ca svacittākrāntimātrakam | śaknuvanti na ye kartuṃ dhik tān puruṣajambukān || 11 ||

Just overcoming one's own mind is fully in one's own hands and easy to do. Those who cannot even do this, shame on such men, mere jackals.

svapauruṣaikasādhyena svepsitatyāgarūpiṇā | manaḥpraśamamātreṇa vinā nāsti śubhā gatiḥ || 12 ||

There is no good path at all without simply calming the mind, something achievable only through one's own effort, by giving up what one desires.

manomāraṇamātreṇa sādhyena svātmasaṃvidā | niḥsapatnamanādyantamanigamanamihocyatām || 13 ||

By simply putting an end to the mind, something achieved through knowledge of one's own self, one reaches that state which has no rival, no beginning, no end, and no movement. Let that state be spoken of here.

143.111.14

īpsitāvedanākhyāttu manaḥpraśamanādṛte | gurūpadeśaśāstrārthamantrādyā yuktayastṛṇam || 14 ||

Except for calming the mind, the practice known as not craving what one desires, everything else, the guru's teaching, the meaning of scriptures, mantras, and all such methods, is worth no more than a blade of straw.

sarvaṃ sarvagataṃ śāntaṃ brahma saṃpadyate tadā | asaṃkalpanaśastreṇa cchinnaṃ cittaṃ gataṃ yadā || 15 ||

When the mind is cut down by the sword of thoughtlessness and disappears, then everything becomes the peaceful Brahman that is present everywhere.

svasaṃvedanasādhye'sminsaṃkalpānarthaśāsane | śāntāyāmatra vapuṣi puṃsaḥ kaiva kadarthanā || 16 ||

This is something one can achieve through one's own awareness, mastering and ending the harm that thought causes. When this state has become peaceful, what difficulty could remain for a man?

nūnaṃ daivamanādṛtya mūḍhasaṃkalpakalpitam | puruṣārtheṇa saṃvittyā naya cittamacittatām || 17 ||

Set aside the idea of fate, it is only something dreamed up by foolish thinking. Through your own human effort and awareness, lead the mind into the state of no mind.

tāṃ mahāpadavīmekāṃ kāmapyadhigataṃ ciram | cittaṃ cidbhakṣitaṃ kṛtvā cittādapi paro bhava || 18 ||

Make the mind be swallowed up by pure consciousness, and become something even higher than the mind itself, reaching that one great state, the one long sought after.

bhava bhāvanayā yukto yuktaḥ paramayā dhiyā | dhārayātmānamavyagro grastacittaṃ tataḥ param || 19 ||

Take up the right way of thinking, joined with the highest wisdom. Hold yourself steady and undisturbed, beyond the mind once it has been swallowed up.

paraṃ pauruṣamāśritya nītvā cittamacittatām | tāṃ mahāpadavīmehi yatra nāśo na vidyate || 20 ||

Rely on your highest effort, lead the mind into the state of no mind, and arrive at that great state where nothing is ever destroyed.

saṃvedanaviparyāsarūpiṇī dhīrivācalā | jetumāśu mano rāma pauruṣeṇaiva śakyate || 21 ||

The mind, which takes the form of distorted awareness and seems as unshakeable as a mountain, can still be conquered quickly, O Rama, only through one's own effort.

anudvegaḥ śriyo mūlamanudvegātpravartate | jantormanojayo yena trilokīvijayastṛṇam || 22 ||

Being free from agitation is the root of all good fortune. From that freedom from agitation comes the conquest of one's own mind, and once the mind is conquered, conquering the three worlds becomes as easy as picking up a straw.

na śastradalanotpātapātā yasyāṃ manāgapi | svabhāvamātravyāvṛttau tasyāṃ kaiva kadarthanā || 23 ||

In this practice there is not even the smallest risk, not even a scratch from any weapon. Since it is only a matter of turning back to one's own true nature, what difficulty can there be in it?

Those base men who cannot even master their own awareness, how will they manage when they face the real business of daily life?

pumānmṛto'smi jāto'smi jīvāmīti kudṛṣṭayaḥ | cetaso vṛttayo bhānti capalasyāsadutthitāḥ || 25 ||

"I am a man," "I am dead," "I am born," "I am alive" - these are false ideas. They are only movements of the restless mind, rising up from what is unreal.

na kaścaneha mriyate jāyate na ca kaścan | svayaṃ vetti mṛtaṃ svasya lokamanyaṃ svakaṃ manaḥ || 26 ||

Here no one dies, and no one is born. It is one's own mind which knows itself as dead, and takes another world as its own.

ito yāti paraṃ lokaṃ sphuratyanyatayā manaḥ | tattasyait yetadāmokṣamato mṛtibhayaṃ kutaḥ || 27 ||

The mind goes from here to another world, appearing as something else. That coming to that state is its own release - so where is the fear of death?

iha lokena vicaratviha lokena paratra ca | cittamāmokṣamāste'sya rūpamanyanna vidyate || 28 ||

Let the mind wander here in this world, and hereafter in another world too - this very movement is its release; it has no other form.

mṛte bhrātari bhṛtyādau kleśa ākriyate'nṛtaḥ | tatsvacittaṃ svacaitanyavyāvṛttātmeti me matiḥ || 29 ||

When a brother, a servant, or someone else dies, false grief arises. That grief is one's own mind, whose nature has turned away from one's own awareness - this is what I think.

sati pathye tate śubhre cittopaśamanādṛte | tiryagūrdhvamadhastācca bhūyobhūyo vicāritam || 30 ||

Even when there is a good, wide, pure teaching, without the calming of the mind nothing helps - this has been examined again and again, sideways, above, and below.

yāvannāsti kilopāyaścittopaśamanādṛte | ṛte tathye tate śubhre bodhe hṛdyudite sati || 31 ||

As long as, apart from the calming of the mind, there is truly no other way - apart from that true, wide, pure awakening that has risen in the heart.

manovilayamātreṇa viśrāntirupajāyate | vyāyate hṛdayākāśe citi ciccakradhārayā || 32 ||

By the mere dissolving of the mind, peace is born. It spreads through the space of the heart, in awareness, as the flow of awareness's own wheel.

mano māraya niḥśaṅkaṃ tvāṃ prabadhnanti nādhayaḥ | yadi ramyamarayatve tvayā saṃviditaṃ vidā || 33 ||

Kill the mind without any fear - mental torments will not bind you, if you, the knower, have truly understood what is pleasant even within what is unpleasant.

chinnānyeva tadāṅgāni cittasyeti matirmama | ayaṃ so'hamidaṃ tanmama etāvanmātrakaṃ manaḥ || 34 ||

My view is this - thoughts like "this is that," "I am this," "this is mine" are the very limbs of the mind, and once they are cut off, the mind is finished. The mind is nothing more than this much.

tadabhāvanamātreṇa dātreṇeva vilūyate | chinnābhramaṇḍalaṃ vyomni yathā śaradi dhūyate || 35 ||

By simply not dwelling on it, as if cut by a sickle, it dissolves - like a torn mass of clouds scattered in the autumn sky.

vātenākalpanenainvaṃ tathā taddhūyate manaḥ | bhavanti yatra śastrāgnipavanāstatra bhīrbhavet || 36 ||

By the wind of thought-free awareness, the mind is likewise scattered. Fear would arise only where there are weapons, fire, and storms.

svāyate mṛduni svacche kimasaṃkalpane bhayam | idaṃ śreya ida neti siddhamābālamakṣatam || 37 ||

It comes to rest in what is soft and clear; what fear can there be where there is no mental imagining? The habit of judging "this is good, this is not" has been fixed since childhood, unbroken.

bālaṃ putramivodāre manaḥ śreyasi yojayet | akṣayaṃ cānavaṃ cetasiṃhaṃ saṃsṛtibṛṃhaṇam || 38 ||

One should guide the mind toward what is truly good, the way one gently guides a child, a son. Left untamed, this mind is an undying, young lion that keeps feeding the cycle of birth and death.

bhīmāḥ saṃbhramadāyinyaḥ saṃkalpakadanādimāḥ | vipadaḥ saṃprasūyante mṛgatṛṣṇā marāviva || 39 ||

Terrible misfortunes, which bring on confusion, born from mental imagining, arise - just as a mirage appears in the desert.

kalpāntapavanā vāntu yāntu caikatvam arṇavāḥ | tapantu dvādaśādityā nāsti nirmanasaḥ kṣatiḥ || 40 ||

Let the winds of the world's end blow, let the oceans merge into one, let all twelve suns blaze - the one without a restless mind suffers no harm.

manobījātsamudyanti sukhaduḥkhe śubhāśubhe | saṃsārakhaṇḍakā ete lokasaptakapallavāḥ || 41 ||

From the seed of the mind arise pleasure and pain, good and bad - these are the pieces of the cycle of the world, the sprouts of the seven worlds.

asaṃkalpanamātraikasādhye sakalasiddhide | asaṃkalpanasāmrājye tiṣṭhāvaṣṭabdhatatpadaḥ || 42 ||

Let us stand firm in that state, holding fast to the empire of thought-free being - achieved only through the absence of mental imagining, which grants every accomplishment.

prayacchatyuttamānandaṃ kṣīyamāṇaṃ manaḥ kramāt | kāṣṭhakṣīṇāṅgakāṅgāro yathāṅgārakṣayārthinaḥ || 43 ||

As the mind gradually diminishes, it grants the highest bliss - just as, for one who wants the ember to burn all the way down, the ember of wood, its parts shrinking, glows brightest before going out.

api brahmakuṭīlakṣaṃ manasaścetsamīhitam | tadaṇorantare vyaktaṃ vibhaktaṃ paridṛśyate || 44 ||

Even if the mind's aim reached a hundred thousand worlds, that is seen clearly and distinctly within a single atom.

saṃkalpamātravibhavena kṛtātyanarthaṃ saṃkalpamātravibhavena susādhitārtham | santoṣamātravibhavena mano vijitya nityoditena jayamehi nirīpsitena || 45 ||

By the mere power of imagining, terrible harm is caused; by the mere power of imagining, a goal is also well achieved. Having conquered the mind through the mere power of contentment, come to victory - through that which is ever-present and free of craving.

paramapāvanayā vimanastayā samatayā matayātmavidāmapi | śamitayā mitayāntarahaṃtayā yadavaśiṣṭamajaṃ padamastu tat || 46 ||

Through a state utterly pure and free of mind, through the evenness of understanding held even by those who know the Self, through a stilled and modest inner sense of "I" - let that unborn state which then remains be ours.
