śrīrāma uvāca | mahāpralayasaṃpattau yadetadavaśiṣyate | bhavatyetadanākāraṃ nāma nāstyatra saṃśayaḥ | || 1 ||

English

Shri Rama said: In the great dissolution, whatever is left over becomes something without any shape - there is no doubt about this.

na śūnyaṃ kathametatsyānna prakāśaḥ kathaṃ bhavet | kathaṃ vā na tamorūpaṃ kathaṃ vā naiva bhāsvaraṃ | || 2 ||

English

How can this not be emptiness? How can it not be light? Or how can it not be in the form of darkness, or how can it not be shining?

kathaṃ vā naiva cidrūpaṃ jīvo vā na kathaṃ bhavet | kathaṃ na buddhitattvaṃ syātkathaṃ vā na mano bhavet | || 3 ||

English

Or how can it not be pure awareness? Or how can it not be the individual soul? How can it not be the faculty of intellect, or how can it not be the mind?

kathaṃ vā naiva kiṃcitsyātkathaṃ vā sarvamityapi | anayaiava vacobhaṅgyā mama moha ivoditaḥ | || 4 ||

English

Or how can it be nothing at all, or how can it be everything? By this very play of words, a kind of confusion has arisen in me.

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | viṣamo'yamatipraśno bhavatā samudāhṛtaḥ | bhettāsmyahaṃ tvayatnena naiśaṃ tama ivāṃśumān | || 5 ||

English

Shri Vasishtha said: This is a hard question you have put forward. I will resolve it without effort, the way the sun dispels the darkness of night.

mahākalpāntasaṃpattau yattatsadavaśiṣyate | tadrāma na yathā śūnyaṃ tadidaṃ śr̥ṇu kathyate | || 6 ||

English

O Rama, that being which is left over at the end of the great world-cycle is not like emptiness. Listen, this is now being told to you.

anutkīrṇā yathā stambhe saṃsthitā śālabhañjikā | tathā viśvaṃ sthitaṃ tatra tena śūnyaṃ na tatpadam | || 7 ||

English

Just as an uncarved statue already lies present inside a pillar, in the same way the universe is present in that being; because of this, that state is not empty.

ayamitthaṃ mahābhogo jagadākhyo'vabhāsate | satyo bhavatvasatyo vā yatra tatra tvaśūnyatā | || 8 ||

English

This great spectacle called "the world" shines forth in this way. Whether it is real or unreal, wherever it is, there is indeed something there, not nothing.

yathā na putrikāśūnyaḥ stambho'nutkīrṇaputrikaḥ | tathā bhātaṃ jagadbrahma tena śūnya na tatpadam | || 9 ||

English

Just as a pillar carrying an uncarved statue is not without that statue, in the same way the world that shines is Brahman itself; because of this, that state is not empty.

saumyāmbhasi yathā vīcirna cāsti naca nāsti ca | tathā jagadbrahmaṇīdaṃ śūnyāśūnyapadaṃ gatam | || 10 ||

English

Just as a wave in calm water neither simply exists on its own nor simply does not exist, in the same way this world within Brahman has come to a state that is neither fully empty nor fully not-empty.

nahi vāryūrdhvamāyāti nādho gacchati pāvakaḥyā yathaiva pravṛttā citsā tathaiva pratiṣṭhitā || 11 ||

English

Water does not rise upward, and fire does not travel downward; whatever way consciousness first arises, it stays fixed in that very way.

chāyāyāmupaviṣṭasya kutastāpānubhūtayaḥyasya saṃvedane'nyo'rthaḥ kenacinnānubhūyate || 12 ||

English

For someone sitting in the shade, how can there be any feeling of heat? In the same way, for that awareness within whose experience no other object is ever felt by anyone, no such change can happen.

yathā saṃvittathā cittaṃ sā tathāvasthitiṃ gatāparameṇa prayatnena nīyate'nyadaśāṃ punaḥ || 13 ||

English

As awareness is, so the mind becomes; the mind has reached that same condition; but by an effort that is not very great, it is again led into a different state.

sarpaikapratyayo rajjvāmasarpapratyaye balātnivartate'nyathā tveṣa tiṣṭhatyeva yathāsthitaḥ || 14 ||

English

The single conviction "this is a snake," seen in a rope, is forcibly removed only when the conviction "this is not a snake" arises; otherwise, it simply continues to stay exactly as it was.

yathā saṃvittathā cittaṃ yathā cittaṃ tathehitambālaṃ pratyapi saṃsiddhametatko nānubhūtavān || 15 ||

English

As awareness is, so the mind becomes; as the mind is, so the action that follows becomes. This is proven true even in the case of a child - who has not experienced this?

mahābhūtaprakāśānāmabhāvastama ucyate | mahābhūtābhāvajaṃ tu tenātra na tamaḥ kvacit || 16 ||

English

The absence of the light of the great elements is called darkness. But that darkness is born from the absence of the great elements; therefore, in that reality, there is no darkness anywhere.

svānubhūtiḥ prakāśo'sya kevalaṃ vyomarūpiṇaḥ | yo'ntarasti sa tenaiva natvan'yenānubhūyate || 17 ||

English

For this reality, whose form is like open space alone, its own self-awareness is its light. Whatever is within it is experienced only by that reality itself, not by anything else.

muktaṃ tamaḥprakāśābhyāmityetadajaraṃ padaṃ | ākāśakośamevedaṃ viddhi kośaṃ jagatsthiteḥ || 18 ||

English

Free from both darkness and light - this is that state which never ages. Know this to be the sheath of space itself, the sheath in which the world rests.

bilvasya bilvamadhyasya yathā bhedo na kaścana | tathāsti brahmajagatorna manāgapi bhinnatā || 19 ||

English

Just as there is not the slightest difference between a bilva fruit and the inside of that same bilva fruit, in the same way there is not even the smallest difference between Brahman and the world.

salilāntaryathā vīcir mṛdantarghaṭako yathā | tathā yatra jagatsattā tatkathaṃ khātmakaṃ bhavet || 20 ||

English

Just as a wave is inside water, and just as a pot is inside clay, in the same way, wherever the world exists, how then can that be of the nature of emptiness?

vasati trasareṇvantardhriyate gaganodarelīyate'ṅkurakośeṣu rasībhavati pallave || 21 ||

English

It lives inside a speck of dust, it is held within the belly of the sky, it dissolves into the husks of sprouts, it becomes sap in a young leaf.

ullasatyambuvīcitve pranṛtyati śilodarepravarṣatyambudo bhūtvā śilībhūyāvatiṣṭhate || 22 ||

English

It plays in the form of a wave of water, it dances inside the belly of a rock, having become a cloud it pours down as rain, and having become stone it stands still.

yathecchamambare yāti jaṭhare'pi ca bhūbhṛtāmanantarākāśavapurdhatte'tha paramāṇutām || 23 ||

English

It moves through the sky as it wishes, and also into the belly of mountains; then it takes on the boundless form of space, and after that the state of a single atom.

dehasyāntarbahirapi dadhadvanatanūruham || 24 ||

English

It also holds the trees of the forest, both inside the body and outside it.

bhavatyākāśamādhatte koṭīḥ padmajasadmanāmananyāḥ svātmano'mbhodhirāvartaracanā iva || 25 ||

English

Space holds within itself crores of worlds belonging to Brahma, and these worlds are not separate from itself - just as the whirlpools that form in an ocean are not separate from the ocean.

anudvignaprabodho'sau sargādau cittadehakaḥākāśatmā mahānbhūtvā vetti prakṛtatāṃ tataḥ || 26 ||

English

At the beginning of creation, this being wakes up calmly, without any disturbance. It has a mind and a body, and it is made of space. After becoming the great principle, it comes to know its own created nature.

asatyameva vāritvaṃ buddhyodetīva tattathāvandhyāputro'yamastīti yathā svapne bhramo naraḥ || 27 ||

English

Just as the unreal water of a mirage seems to rise up before the mind, so this world too seems real. It is like saying, 'this is the son of a woman who cannot bear children' - impossible, yet believed - or like a dream in which a man wrongly seems to exist.

śrīrāma uvāca kiṃ cittametadbhavati kiṃvā bhavati nau kathamkathameva na sadrūpaṃ nānyadbhavati vīkṣaṇāt || 28 ||

English

Rama said: Does this world become the mind itself? Or how else does it come to be for us? How is it that it is not truly real, and yet, when we look closely, nothing other than reality is found?

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca pratyekameva yaccittaṃ tadevaṃrūpaśaktikampṛthakpratyekamuditaḥ praticittaṃ jagadbhramaḥ || 29 ||

English

Vasishtha said: Each person's own mind has exactly this same shape and this same power. In each mind, separately and individually, its own delusion of the world rises up.

kṣaṇakalpajagatsaṃghā samudyanti galanti canimeṣātkasyacitkalpātkasyacicca kramaṃ śrṛṇu || 30 ||

English

Groups of worlds that last only a moment, and groups of worlds that last a whole cosmic age, keep rising and dissolving. For one person this happens in the blink of an eye, for another it takes a whole cosmic age. Listen now to how this order works.

maraṇādimayī mūrcchā pratyekenānubhūyateyaiṣā tāṃ viddhi sumate mahāpralayayāminīm || 31 ||

English

O wise Rama, know this: the swoon that is like death, which each person experiences on his own, is in truth the night of the great dissolution.

tadante tanute sargaṃ sarva eva pṛthakpṛthaksahajasvapnasaṃkalpānsaṃbhramācalanṛtyavat || 32 ||

English

At the end of that night, every single being spins out its own creation, separately, made of the natural thoughts of dreams, like a dizzy, whirling dance.

mahāpralayarātryante cirādātmamanovapuḥyathedaṃ tanute tadvatpratyekaṃ mṛtyanantaram || 33 ||

English

At the end of the night of the great dissolution, after a very long time, the self takes on a body made of mind and stretches out this creation. In the very same way, this happens to each person right after death.

śrīrāma uvāca mṛteranantaraṃ sargo yathā smṛtyānubhūyatecirāttathānubhavati nāto viśvamakāraṇam || 34 ||

English

Rama said: Just as, right after a person dies, the next creation is experienced through memory, so it must be experienced after that long night too. That is why this universe is not without a cause.

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca mahati pralaye rāma sarve hariharādayaḥvidehamuktatāṃ yānti smṛteḥ ka iva saṃbhava || 35 ||

English

Vasishtha said: O Rama, at the time of the great dissolution, all the gods, beginning with Vishnu and Shiva, attain a liberation in which they have no body at all. Then how could any memory possibly remain?

asmadādiḥ prabuddhātmā kilāvaśyaṃ vimucyatekathaṃ bhavantu no muktā videhāḥ padmajātayaḥ || 36 ||

English

Those like us, whose self has already woken up, are indeed surely freed. But how can the bodiless beings born from the lotus-born Brahma truly be called free by us?

anye tvamiva ye jīvāsteṣāṃ maraṇajanmasusmṛtiḥ kāraṇatāmeti mokṣābhāvavaśādiha || 37 ||

English

But other souls, unlike you, who have not woken up, still carry memory through their births and deaths. For them memory becomes the cause of return, simply because they have not attained liberation here.

bhavatyadrirdharādhāro baddhapīṭho nabhaḥ śirāḥjīvo hi mṛtimūrcchānte yadantaḥ pronmiṣannivaanunmiṣita evāste tatpradhānamudāhṛtam || 38 ||

English

A mountain stands firm and supports the earth, its base fixed, its peak reaching the sky. In the same way, the individual soul, at the end of the swoon of death, stays within as if about to open its eyes, yet stays unopened. That state is called the Pradhana, the root nature.

tadvyomaprakṛtiḥ proktā tadavyaktaṃ jaḍājaḍamsaṃsmṛterasmṛteścaiva krama eṣa bhavodaye || 39 ||

English

That is called the nature made of space. It is the unmanifest, neither fully lifeless nor fully conscious. This is the order in which remembering and forgetting take place as worldly existence rises.

bodhonmukhatve hi mahattatprabuddhaṃ yadā bhavettadā tanmātradikkālakriyā bhūtādyudeti khāt || 40 ||

English

When that great principle wakes up and turns towards knowing, then from empty space arise the subtle elements, space, time, action, and the gross elements.

tadevocchūnamābuddhaṃ bhavatīndriyapañcakamtadeva budhyate dehaḥ sa eṣo'syātivāhikaḥ || 41 ||

English

That very thing, having grown and become awake, turns into the five senses. That very thing is known as the body - this is its subtle, traveling body.

cirakālapratyayataḥ kalpanāparipīvaraḥādhibhautikatābodhamādhatte caiṣa bālavat || 42 ||

English

Through the belief that has built up over a long time, it grows thick with imagination, and, like a child, it comes to believe it is made of gross physical matter.

tato dikkālakalanāstadādhāratayā sthitāḥudyantyanuditā eva vāyoḥ spandakriyā iva || 43 ||

English

Then the divisions of space and time, resting on that subtle body as their support, arise even though they never truly arose - like the moving vibration of the wind.

vṛddhimitthamayaṃ yāto mudhaiva bhuvanabhramaḥsvapnāṅganāsaṅgasamastvanubhūto'pyasanmayaḥ || 44 ||

English

In this way this confusion of the world has grown, uselessly - like the pleasure of embracing a woman in a dream. Though it is experienced, it is made of nothing real.

yatraiva mriyate jantuḥ paśyatyāśu tadeva saḥtatraiva bhuvanābhogamimamitthamiva sthitam || 45 ||

English

Wherever a creature dies, he soon sees that very same state again. Right there this whole range of the world stands fixed, exactly as it was.

vyomaivānubhavatyacchamahaṃ jagaditi bhramamvyomarūpaṃ vyomarūpī jīvo jāta ivātmavān || 46 ||

English

Pure space itself experiences the delusion, 'I am the world.' The individual soul, itself made of space, takes on the form of space, as though it were born and had become a separate self.

47

सुरपत्तनशैलार्कतारानिकरसुन्दरम्जरामरणवैक्लव्यव्याधिसंकटकोटरम् || ४७ ||

surapattanaśailārkatārānikarasundaramjarāmaraṇavaiklavyavyādhisaṃkaṭakoṭaram || 47 ||

English

This world is beautiful with the cities of the gods, mountains, the sun, and countless stars - yet it is also a hollow cave full of old age, death, distress, and sickness.

48

स्वभावाभावसंरम्भस्थूलसूक्ष्मचराचरम्साव्ध्यद्व्युर्वीनदीशाहोरात्रिकल्पक्षणक्षयम् || ४८ ||

svabhāvābhāvasaṃrambhasthūlasūkṣmacarācaramsāvdhyadvyurvīnadīśāhorātrikalpakṣaṇakṣayam || 48 ||

English

By its own nature, the things of this world, gross and subtle, moving and unmoving, keep arising and ceasing. Together with its oceans, its lands, its rivers, and its rulers, it keeps decaying, moment by moment, through days, nights, and whole cosmic ages.

ahaṃ jāto'munā pitrā kilātretyāptaniścayamiyaṃ mātā dhanamidaṃ mametyuditavāsanam || 49 ||

English

"I was born here through this father" - people hold this as a settled certainty; and thoughts like "this is my mother" and "this wealth is mine" also rise up from that same impression.

vedyavedanavettṛtvarūpatrayamidaṃ puraḥ | yatrodetyastamāyāti tattatparamadurlabham || 50 ||

English

In front of us stand these three things: the thing known, the knowing of it, and the one who knows. Whatever it is in which these three rise and set, that alone is truly hard to reach.

vedyavedanavettṛtvaṃ yatredaṃ pratibimbati | abuddhyādau mahādarśe tadrūpaṃ paramaṃ smṛtam || 51 ||

English

This threefold thing - the known, the knowing, and the knower - is reflected somewhere, the way a face is reflected in a mirror. That great mirror, which has no mind or intellect of its own, is remembered as the highest reality.

manaḥ svapnendriyairmuktaṃ yadrūpaṃ syānmahāciteḥ | jaṅgame sthāvare vāpi tatsarvānte'vaśiṣyate || 52 ||

English

That form of the great consciousness which is free from the mind, from dreams, and from the senses - whether it is in something that moves or in something that does not move - that alone is left standing when everything else has ended.

sthāvarāṇāṃ hi yadrūpaṃ taccetbodhamayaṃ bhavet | manobuddhyādinirmuktaṃ tatpareṇopamīyate || 53 ||

English

If the form that belongs to unmoving things like plants and stones is itself made of awareness, and is free from mind, intellect and the rest, then that very thing is compared to the highest reality.

brahmārkaviṣṇuharaśakrasadāśivādi śāntau śivaṃ paramametadihaiakamāste | sarvopadhivyayavaśādavikalparūpaṃ caitanyamātramayamujjhitaviśvasaṅgam || 54 ||

English

When Brahma, the Sun, Vishnu, Shiva, Indra, Sadashiva and the rest fall silent, only this one highest, auspicious reality remains here. Once all its coverings fall away, it stays unchanging, made only of consciousness, and free from all contact with the universe.

koṭayo brahmarudrendramarudviṣṇuvivasvatāmgiryabdhimaṇḍaladvīpalokāntaradṛśāṃ gatāḥ || 55 ||

English

Crores of Brahmas, Rudras, Indras, Maruts, Vishnus and Suns, and crores of mountains, oceans, worlds, islands, and other seen regions - all have passed away.

yātā yāsyanti yāntyetā dṛṣṭayo naṣṭarūpiṇīḥyā brahmaṇyupabṛṃhāḍhyāstāḥ ke gaṇayituṃ kṣamāḥ || 56 ||

English

These visible worlds, whose forms are bound to perish, have gone, are going, and will go. But those that merge into Brahman and grow full within it - who can count them?

evaṃ kuḍyamayaṃ viśvaṃ nāstyeva mananādṛtemanane calamevāntastadidānīṃ vicāraya || 57 ||

English

So this universe, like a picture painted on a wall, does not exist at all apart from thought. It moves only within thought - now think this over.

yadeva taccidākāśaṃ tadeva mananaṃ smṛtamyadeva ca cidākāśaṃ tadeva paramaṃ padam || 58 ||

English

Whatever is that space of consciousness, that itself is known as thought. And whatever is that space of consciousness, that itself is the highest state.

yadevāmbu sa āvarto natvasyāvarta vastu sandraṣṭaivāste dṛśyamiva dṛśyaṃ natvasti vastu sat || 59 ||

English

Whatever is water, that itself is the whirlpool; the whirlpool is not some separate real thing of its own. In the same way, only the seer exists, appearing as the seen; the seen itself is not a truly existing thing.

cidvyomno bhūtanabhasi kacanaṃ yanmaṇerivatajjagadbhāvinānāsattattvaṃ śvabhramivāmbare || 60 ||

English

The light that seems to shine in the sky of the elements, coming from the space of consciousness, is like the shine of a jewel. Out of it appears the world, made of many things that seem real, the way one might picture a pit hollowed out in the empty sky.

madbuddhārtho jagacchabdo vidyate paramāmṛtamtvadbuddhārarthastu nāstyeva tvamahaṃśabdakādapi || 61 ||

English

The word "world," when I understand its meaning, turns out to be the highest immortal reality. But when you understand its meaning as something separate from yourself, it does not exist at all - and neither do even the words "you" and "I."

tasmāllīlāsarasvatyāvākāśavapuṣau sthitesarvage paramātmācche sarvatrāpratighe'naghe || 62 ||

English

So these two, play and speech, stay with bodies made of space - reaching everywhere, as clear as the highest self, unstopped everywhere, and without fault.

yatra yatra sadā vyomni yathākāmaṃ yathepsitamudayaṃ kurutastena tadgehe'sti gatistayoḥ || 63 ||

English

Wherever in space these two always bring things into being, as they wish and as they desire, their movement lies right there, in that same home.

sarvatra saṃbhavati cidgaganaṃ tadatra sadvedanaṃ kalanamāmananaṃ visāritaccātivāhikamihāhurakuḍyameva dehaṃ kathaṃ ka iva taṃ vada kiṃ ruṇaddhi || 64 ||

English

The sky of consciousness exists everywhere. True awareness here, its working, its remembering, spread out - this is called, in this world, the subtle traveling body. Tell me, how could anyone block that body, which has no walls at all? What could possibly stop it?
