श्रीवसिष्ठ उवाच अत्र ते श्रृणु वक्ष्यामि वृत्तान्तमिममुत्तमम् जागतीहेन्द्रजालश्रीश्चित्तायत्ता यथा स्थिता ॥ १ ॥

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca atra te śr̥ṇu vakṣyāmi vṛttāntamimamuttamam jāgatīhendrajālaśrīścittāyattā yathā sthitā || 1 ||

Sri Vasishtha said, listen, I will tell you this excellent story now, how the glory of this world's magic show stands, depending entirely on the mind.

श्री वसिष्ठ बोले, सुनो, अब मैं तुम्हें यह बढ़िया कहानी सुनाता हूँ, कि इस जगत में जादू के तमाशे की चमक कैसे पूरी तरह मन पर टिकी रहती है।

अस्त्यस्मिन्वसुधापीठे नानावनसमाकुलः उत्तरापाण्डवो नाम स्फीतो जनपदो महान् ॥ २ ॥

astyasminvasudhāpīṭhe nānāvanasamākulaḥ uttarāpāṇḍavo nāma sphīto janapado mahān || 2 ||

On this earth there is a great and thriving country named Uttara-Pandava, crowded with many forests.

इस धरती पर उत्तर-पांडव नाम का एक बड़ा और समृद्ध देश है, जो कई वनों से भरा हुआ है।

नीरन्ध्रघनगम्भीरवनविश्रान्ततापसः विद्याधरीकृतलतादोलोपवनपत्तनः ॥ ३ ॥

nīrandhraghana gambhīravana viśrāntatāpasaḥ vidyādharīkṛtalatādolopavanapattanaḥ || 3 ||

In its dense, thick, deep forests, ascetics find rest, and in its garden towns, Vidyadhara women swing on vine swings.

इसके घने, गहरे जंगलों में तपस्वी विश्राम करते हैं, और इसके बगीचों वाले नगरों में विद्याधर स्त्रियाँ लताओं के झूलों पर झूलती हैं।

वातोद्धूताञ्जकिञ्जल्कपुञ्जपिञ्जरपर्वतः लसत्कुसुमसंभारवनमालावतंसकः ॥ ४ ॥

vātoddhūtāñjakinjalkapuñjapiñjaraparvataḥ lasatkusumasambhāravana mālāvataṃsakaḥ || 4 ||

Its mountains turn tawny yellow with heaps of anjana flower pollen scattered by the wind, and the land wears the forest's mass of shining flowers like a garland worn in the ear.

हवा से बिखरे अंजन फूलों के पराग की ढेरियों से इसके पहाड़ पीले भूरे हो जाते हैं, और यह देश वन के चमकते फूलों की माला को कान के गहने की तरह पहने रहता है।

करञ्जमञ्जरीकुञ्जगुच्छपर्यन्तजङ्गलः खर्जूरान्तरितग्रामो घुंघुमध्वनिताम्बरः ॥ ५ ॥

karañjamañjarīkuñjagucchaparyantajaṅgalaḥ kharjūrāntaritagrāmo ghuṅghumadhvanitāmbaraḥ || 5 ||

Its wild borderlands are thick with clusters of karanja flower bunches in the groves, its villages are screened by date palm trees, and its sky hums with a low buzzing sound.

इसकी जंगली सीमाओं पर करंज के फूलों के गुच्छे झुरमुटों में भरे रहते हैं, इसके गाँव खजूर के पेड़ों की आड़ में छिपे रहते हैं, और इसका आकाश एक हल्की गूँज से गूँजता रहता है।

एकपिङ्गशिलाश्रेणीशालिकेदारपिङ्गलः । नीलकण्ठारवोद्दामवनजङ्गलमण्डितः ॥ ६ ॥

ekapiṅgaśilāśreṇīśālikedārapiṅgalaḥ | nīlakaṇṭhāravodāmavana jaṅgalamaṇḍitaḥ || 6 ||

It is tawny with rows of brown rock and ripe rice fields, and adorned with wild forest thickets that ring with the loud cries of peacocks.

यह भूरी चट्टानों की कतारों और पके धान के खेतों से पीला भूरा दिखता है, और मोरों की तेज़ आवाज़ों से गूँजते जंगली झुरमुटों से सजा हुआ है।

सारसारवसंरम्भरणत्कनककाननः । तमालपाटलीनीलगिरिग्रामककुण्डलः ॥ ७ ॥

sārasāravasaṃrambharṇatkanakakānanaḥ | tamālapāṭalīnīlagirigrāmakakuṇḍalaḥ || 7 ||

Its golden forests ring with the excited calls of cranes, and its mountain villages, dark with tamala and patali trees, hang on the land like earrings.

इसके सुनहरे जंगल सारसों की उत्तेजित पुकार से गूँजते हैं, और तमाल तथा पाटली के पेड़ों से काले इसके पहाड़ी गाँव धरती के कानों में झुमकों जैसे लटकते हैं।

विचित्रविहगव्यूहविरावकृतकाकलिः । नदीपरिसरोन्निद्रपारिभद्रद्रुमारुणः ॥ ८ ॥

vicitravihagavyūhavirāvakṛtakākaliḥ | nadīparisaronnidrapāribhadradrumāruṇaḥ || 8 ||

Flocks of strange birds fill it with their sweet calls, and along its riverbanks the blooming paribhadra trees turn it red.

अनोखे पक्षियों के झुंड अपनी मीठी बोली से इसे भर देते हैं, और नदी के किनारे खिले हुए पारिभद्र के पेड़ों से यह लाल दिखता है।

गायत्कलमकेदारदारिकाहृतमन्मथः । पुष्पफलचलद्वातव्याधूतकुसुमाम्बुदः ॥ ९ ॥

gāyatkalamakedāradārikāhṛtamanmathaḥ | puṣpaphalacaladvātavyādhūtakusumāmbudaḥ || 9 ||

Girls singing in the rice paddies steal away desire itself with their song, and the breeze moving among flowers and fruits shakes loose clouds of blossom.

धान के खेतों में गाती हुई लड़कियाँ अपने गीत से मन की चाहत को भी मोह लेती हैं, और फूलों फलों के बीच बहती हवा फूलों के बादलों को हिला देती है।

दरीगृहविनिष्क्रान्तसिद्धचारणबन्दिकम् । स्वर्गादिव समानीय लावण्यमभिनिर्मितः ॥ १० ॥

darīgṛhaviniṣkrāntasiddhacāraṇabandikam | svargādiva samānīya lāvaṇyamabhinirmitaḥ || 10 ||

Siddhas, Charanas, and bards come out of its mountain caves like a heavenly troupe, and its beauty seems fashioned as though brought down from heaven itself.

इसकी पहाड़ी गुफाओं से सिद्ध, चारण और भाट किसी स्वर्गीय टोली की तरह बाहर निकलते हैं, और इसकी सुंदरता मानो स्वर्ग से लाकर रची गई हो।

गायत्किन्नरगन्धर्वकदलीखण्डमण्डपः । मन्दानिलरवोद्भूतः पुष्पोपवनपाण्डुरः ॥ ११ ॥

gāyatkinnaragandharvakadalīkhaṇḍamaṇḍapaḥ | mandānilaravodbhūtaḥ puṣpopavanapāṇḍuraḥ || 11 ||

In its banana grove pavilions, Kinnaras and Gandharvas sing, a soft sound rises with the gentle breeze, and its flowering gardens turn it pale white.

इसके केले के बागों की छतरियों में किन्नर और गंधर्व गाते हैं, मंद हवा से एक हल्की आवाज़ उठती है, और खिले हुए बगीचों से यह सफ़ेद दिखता है।

तत्रास्ति लवणो नाम राजा परमधार्मिकः । हरिश्चन्द्रकुलोद्भूतो भूमाविव दिवाकरः ॥ १२ ॥

tatrāsti lavaṇo nāma rājā paramadhārmikaḥ | hariścandrakulodbhūto bhūmāviva divākaraḥ || 12 ||

There, in that country, lives a king named Lavana, deeply righteous, born in the line of Harishchandra, shining on the earth like the sun.

उस देश में लवण नाम का एक राजा रहता है, जो बहुत धर्मात्मा है, हरिश्चंद्र के वंश में जन्मा है, और धरती पर सूर्य की तरह चमकता है।

यद्यशःकुसुमोत्तंसपाण्डुरस्कन्धमण्डलाः । तत्र शैला विराजन्ते हाराः प्रोद्धूलिता इव ॥ १३ ॥

yadyaśaḥkusumottam̐sapāṇḍuraskandhamanḍalāḥ | tatra śailā virājante hārāḥ proddhūlitā iva || 13 ||

There, the mountains, their ridges made white as if crowned with flowers by his fame, shine like necklaces dusted with powder.

वहाँ के पहाड़, जिनकी चोटियाँ मानो उसकी कीर्ति रूपी फूलों की माला से सफ़ेद हो गई हैं, ऐसे चमकते हैं जैसे चूर्ण से सने हुए हार।

कृपाणशकलोत्कृत्तनिःशेषारातिमण्डलः । अरातिलोकः प्राप्नोति यदनुस्मरणाज्ज्वरम् ॥ १४ ॥

kṛpāṇaśakalotkṛttaniḥśeṣārātimanḍalaḥ | arātilokaḥ prāpnoti yadanusmaraṇājjvaram || 14 ||

He has cut down his whole circle of enemies completely with the blade of his sword, and his enemies fall into a fever merely from remembering him.

उसने अपनी तलवार की धार से अपने सारे शत्रुओं के समूह को पूरी तरह काट डाला है, और उसके शत्रु सिर्फ उसे याद करने से ही बुखार में पड़ जाते हैं।

यस्याप्सरोमिरद्रीन्द्रमूर्धस्वमरसद्मसु । विकासिपुलकोल्लासं गीयन्ते गुणगीतयः ॥ १६ ॥

yasyāpsaromiradrīndramūrdhasvamarasadmasu | vikāsipulakollāsaṃ gīyante guṇagītayaḥ || 16 ||

On the peaks of the great mountains, in the dwelling places of the gods, the Apsaras sing songs of his virtues, thrilled with such joy that their hair stands on end.

बड़े पहाड़ों की चोटियों पर, देवताओं के घरों में, अप्सराएँ उसके गुणों के गीत ऐसे आनंद से गाती हैं कि उनके रोंगटे खड़े हो जाते हैं।

यस्योदारसमारम्भमार्यलोकानुपालनम् । चरितं संस्मरिष्यन्ति हरेरिव चिरं जनाः ॥ १७ ॥

yasyodārasamārambhamāryalokānupālanam | caritaṃ saṃsmariṣyanti hareriva ciraṃ janāḥ || 17 ||

People will remember his life for a long time, its great undertakings, its care in protecting good people, just as they remember the deeds of Hari.

लोग उसके जीवन को लंबे समय तक याद रखेंगे, उसके महान कार्यों को, अच्छे लोगों की रक्षा करने की उसकी लगन को, ठीक वैसे ही जैसे वे हरि के कामों को याद करते हैं।

स्वप्नेष्वपि न सामान्या यस्योदारचमत्कृतिः । राम दृष्टा श्रुता वापि दैन्यदोषमयी क्रिया ॥ १८ ॥

svapneṣvapi na sāmānyā yasyodāracamatkṛtiḥ | rāma dṛṣṭā śrutā vāpi dainyadoṣamayī kriyā || 18 ||

Rama, not even in a dream has anyone seen or heard of him doing anything ordinary, his deeds are always wonderful, never was an act of his marked by meanness.

हे राम, सपने में भी किसी ने उसे कोई मामूली काम करते नहीं देखा या सुना, उसके काम हमेशा अद्भुत होते हैं, उसमें कभी कंजूसी या दीनता का दोष नहीं दिखा।

जिह्मतां यो न जानाति न दृष्टा येन धृष्णुता । उदारता येन धृता ब्रह्मणेवाक्षमालिका ॥ १९ ॥

jihmatāṃ yo na jānāti na dṛṣṭā yena dhṛṣṇutā | udāratā yena dhṛtā brahmaṇevākṣamālikā || 19 ||

He knows nothing of crookedness, no one has ever seen him act with insolence, and he holds on to generosity the way Brahma holds his rosary of beads.

वह टेढ़ेपन को जानता ही नहीं, किसी ने उसे कभी अकड़ या ढिठाई दिखाते नहीं देखा, और वह उदारता को वैसे ही थामे रहता है जैसे ब्रह्मा अपनी माला को थामे रहते हैं।

दिनाष्टभागमाकाशमागते दिवसाधिपे । स कदाचित्सभास्थाने सिंहासनगतोऽभवत् ॥ २० ॥

dināṣṭabhāgamākāśamāgate divasādhipa | sa kadācit sabhāsthāne siṃhāsanagato'bhavat || 20 ||

One day, when the sun had climbed an eighth of the way across the sky, he was seated on his throne in the royal court.

एक दिन, जब सूरज आकाश में दिन के आठवें हिस्से तक चढ़ आया था, वह अपने सिंहासन पर सभा में बैठा था।

सुखोपविष्टे तत्रास्मिन्राजनीन्दाविवाम्बरे । प्रविशन्तीषु सामन्तसेनासु च ससंभ्रमम् ॥ २१ ॥

sukhopaviṣṭe tatrāsmin rājanīndāv ivāmbare | praviśantīṣu sāmantasenāsu ca sasaṃbhramam || 21 ||

While the king sat there comfortably, like the moon in the sky, the armies of the vassal chiefs came hurrying in.

जब राजा वहाँ आराम से बैठा था, मानो आकाश में चाँद हो, तब सामंतों की सेनाएँ हड़बड़ाहट में अंदर आ रही थीं।

गायन्तीष्वथ कान्तासु सूपविष्टेषु राजसु । मनो हरति साह्लादे वीणावंशकलारवे ॥ २२ ॥

gāyantīṣvatha kāntāsu sūpaviṣṭeṣu rājasu | mano harati sāhlāde vīṇāvaṃśakalārave || 22 ||

As lovely women sang and the assembled kings sat at ease, the sweet sound of vina and flute, full of delight, carried away everyone's mind.

जब सुंदर स्त्रियाँ गा रही थीं और वहाँ बैठे राजा लोग आराम से बैठे थे, तब वीणा और बांसुरी की मधुर, आनंददायक ध्वनि सबका मन मोह रही थी।

चारुचामरहस्तासु सविलासासु राजनि । देवासुरगुरुप्रख्ये विश्रान्ते मन्त्रिमण्डले ॥ २३ ॥

cāru cāmarahastāsu savilāsāsu rājani | devāsuraguruprakhye viśrānte mantrimanḍale || 23 ||

Lovely, playful women stood there fanning the king with chamaras, and the council of ministers, as famous as the councils of the gurus of gods and demons, sat there at ease.

सुंदर, चंचल स्त्रियाँ हाथों में चंवर लिए राजा के पास खड़ी थीं, और मंत्रियों की सभा, जो देवताओं और असुरों के गुरुओं की सभा जैसी प्रसिद्ध थी, वहाँ आराम से बैठी थी।

प्रस्तुतेषु प्रविष्टेषु राजकार्येषु मन्त्रिभिः । प्रोक्तासु देशवार्तासु निपुणैश्चारुमन्त्रिभिः ॥ २४ ॥

prastuteṣu praviṣṭeṣu rājakāryeṣu mantribhiḥ | proktāsu deśavārtāsu nipuṇaiścārumantribhiḥ || 24 ||

State matters were being taken up and handled by the ministers, and the skilled, capable ministers were reporting the news of the country.

मंत्री राजकाज के काम संभाल रहे थे, और कुशल, योग्य मंत्री देश की खबरें सुना रहे थे।

इतिह्यसमये पुण्ये वाच्यमाने च पुस्तके । पठत्सु च स्तुतीः पुण्याः पुरः प्रह्वेषु वन्दिषु ॥ २५ ॥

itihyasamaye puṇye vācyamāne ca pustake | paṭhatsu ca stutīḥ puṇyāḥ puraḥ prahveṣu vandiṣu || 25 ||

At that auspicious moment, while a sacred book of ancient stories was being read aloud, the bards, bowing before him, recited holy hymns of praise.

उसी शुभ समय पर, जब पुराने इतिहास की एक पवित्र पुस्तक पढ़ी जा रही थी, और भाट लोग राजा के आगे झुककर पवित्र स्तुतियाँ गा रहे थे।

सभां विवेश साटोपः कश्चित्तामैन्द्रजालिकः । वर्षेणाहितसंरम्भो वसुधामिव वारिदः ॥ २६ ॥

sabhāṃ viveśa sāṭopaḥ kaścittāmaindrajālikaḥ | varṣeṇāhitasaṃrambho vasudhāmiva vāridaḥ || 26 ||

A magician entered the royal assembly with great pride, like a rain cloud coming down eagerly upon the earth.

एक जादूगर बड़े घमंड के साथ सभा में आया, जैसे कोई बादल बारिश की उमंग में धरती पर उतरता है।

स ननाम महीपालं शिखरोदारकन्धरम् । पादोपान्तगतः कान्तं शैलं फलतरुर्यथा ॥ २७ ॥

sa nanāma mahīpālaṃ śikharodārakandharam | pādopāntagataḥ kāntaṃ śailaṃ phalataruryathā || 27 ||

He bowed before the king, whose neck was noble like a mountain peak, just as a fruit tree standing at the foot of a lovely mountain bends down toward it.

उसने राजा को झुककर प्रणाम किया, जिसकी गर्दन किसी पहाड़ की चोटी जैसी शानदार थी, ठीक वैसे ही जैसे किसी सुंदर पहाड़ के नीचे खड़ा फलों से लदा पेड़ उसकी तरफ झुक जाता है।

सच्छायस्योन्नतांसस्य फलिनः पुष्पभासिनः । स विवेश पुरो राज्ञस्तरोरग्रे कपिर्यथा ॥ २८ ॥

sacchāyasyonnatāṃsasya phalinaḥ puṣpabhāsinaḥ | sa viveśa puro rājñastaroragre kapiryathā || 28 ||

He came before the king, who had cool shade, high shoulders, ripe fruit and bright flowers like a tree, just as a monkey climbs to the top of a tree.

वह राजा के सामने आया, जो एक पेड़ की तरह ठंडी छाया, ऊँचे कंधों, पके फलों और चमकते फूलों वाला था, ठीक वैसे ही जैसे कोई बंदर पेड़ की चोटी पर चढ़ जाता है।

चपलो लम्पटोऽर्थानामामोदसुखमारुतम् । उवाचोत्कन्धरं भूपं सपद्ममिव षट्पदः ॥ २९ ॥

capalo lampaṭo'rthānāmāmodasukhamārutam | uvācotkandharaṃ bhūpaṃ sapadmamiva ṣaṭpadaḥ || 29 ||

That restless man, greedy for money, spoke to the king, who sat there with his head held high like a pleasant, joyful breeze, just as a bee speaks to a lotus on its stem.

वह बेचैन आदमी, जो धन का लालची था, राजा से बोला, जो सिर उठाए बैठा था मानो कोई सुखद और आनंददायक हवा हो, ठीक वैसे ही जैसे कोई भौंरा डंठल पर लगे कमल से बात करता है।

विलोकय विभो तावदेकामिह खरोलिकाम् । पीठस्थ एव साश्चर्यां व्योम्नि चन्द्र इवावनिम् ॥ ३० ॥

vilokaya vibho tāvadekāmiha kharolikām | pīṭhastha eva sāścaryāṃ vyomni candra ivāvanim || 30 ||

My lord, just look at this one wonder trick here, while sitting right on your throne, the way the moon looks at the earth from the sky.

हे स्वामी, बस अपने आसन पर बैठे बैठे यहाँ यह एक अद्भुत खेल देखिए, जैसे चाँद आकाश से धरती को देखता है।

इत्युक्त्वा पिच्छिका तेन भ्रामिता भ्रमदायिनी । नानाविरचनाबीजं मायेव परमात्मनः ॥ ३१ ॥

ityuktvā picchikā tena bhrāmitā bhramadāyinī | nānāviracanābījaṃ māyeva paramātmanaḥ || 31 ||

Having said this, he twirled a feather wand that brings on confusion, the seed of many kinds of creation, like the illusion power, the maya, of the Supreme Self.

यह कहकर उसने एक पंखों वाली छड़ी घुमाई, जो भ्रम पैदा करती थी और अनेक तरह की रचनाओं का बीज थी, ठीक वैसे ही जैसे परमात्मा की माया होती है।

तां ददर्श महीपालस्तेजोरेणुविराजिताम् । शक्रः सुरविमानस्थः स्वकार्मुकलतामिव ॥ ३२ ॥

tāṃ dadarśa mahīpālastējorēṇuvirājitām | śakraḥ suravimānasthaḥ svakārmukalatāmiva || 32 ||

The king saw it shining with sparkling dust of light, as Indra, seated in his heavenly chariot, sees his own bow like a vine of light.

राजा ने उसे प्रकाश के चमकते कणों से जगमगाते देखा, जैसे इंद्र अपने स्वर्गीय रथ पर बैठकर अपने धनुष को इंद्रधनुष की बेल जैसा देखता है।

सभां सैन्धवसामन्तो विवेशास्मिन्क्षणे तदा । तारापरिकरापूर्णां व्योमवीथीमिवाम्बुदः ॥ ३३ ॥

sabhāṃ saindhavasāmanto viveśāsminkṣaṇe tadā | tārāparikarāpūrṇāṃ vyomavīthīmivāmbudaḥ || 33 ||

At that very moment, a chieftain from Sindh entered the assembly, full of a crowd of followers like a mass of stars, the way a cloud enters the pathway of the sky.

ठीक उसी पल सिंध का एक सामंत सभा में आया, अपने अनुयायियों की भीड़ से भरा हुआ मानो तारों का समूह हो, जैसे कोई बादल आकाश के रास्ते में प्रवेश करता है।

तं चैवानुजगामाश्वः सौम्यः परमवेगवान् । देवलोकोन्मुखं तुष्टं शक्रमुच्चैःश्रवा इव ॥ ३४ ॥

taṃ caivānujagāmāśvaḥ saumyaḥ paramavegavān | devalokonmukhaṃ tuṣṭaṃ śakramuccaiḥśravā iva || 34 ||

A gentle, very swift horse followed him, just as Uccaihshravas follows a happy Indra heading toward the world of the gods.

एक कोमल और बहुत तेज़ घोड़ा उसके पीछे पीछे चला, ठीक वैसे ही जैसे उच्चैःश्रवा नाम का घोड़ा प्रसन्न इंद्र के पीछे चलता है जब वह देवलोक की ओर जाता है।

स तमश्वमुपादाय पार्थिवं समुवाच ह । सोच्चैःश्रवा इव क्षीरसागरो मरुतां पतिम् ॥ ३५ ॥

sa tam aśvam upādāya pārthivaṃ samuvāca ha | soccaiḥśravā iva kṣīrasāgaraḥ marutāṃ patim || 35 ||

Taking hold of that horse, he spoke to the king, as the Ocean of Milk, together with Uccaihshravas, once spoke to Indra, the lord of the winds.

उस घोड़े को लेकर उसने राजा से बात की, ठीक वैसे ही जैसे उच्चैःश्रवा घोड़े के साथ क्षीरसागर ने हवाओं के स्वामी इंद्र से बात की थी।

इदमुच्चैःश्रवःप्रख्यं हयरत्नं महीपते । जवोडुयनशीलेन मूर्तिमानिव मारुतः ॥ ३६ ॥

idamuccaiḥśravaḥprakhyam hayaratnaṃ mahīpate | javoduyanaśīlena mūrtimāniva mārutaḥ || 36 ||

O king, this is a jewel among horses, resembling Uccaihshravas, with a nature of swift leaping speed, as if the wind god had taken on a body.

हे राजा, यह घोड़ों में एक रत्न है, उच्चैःश्रवा जैसा दिखने वाला, तेज़ छलांग भरने वाला, मानो पवन देव खुद शरीर धारण करके आए हों।

अश्वोऽयमस्मत्प्रभुणा प्रभो संप्रहितस्त्वयि । राजते हि पदार्थश्रीर्महतामर्पणाच्छुभा ॥ ॥ ३७ ॥

aśvo'yamasmattprabhuṇā prabho saṃprahitastvayi | rājate hi padārthaśrīrmahatāmarpaṇācchubhā || 37 ||

My lord, this horse has been sent to you by my master, for a thing's beauty truly shines out as auspicious when it is given by great people.

हे स्वामी, यह घोड़ा मेरे मालिक ने आपके पास भेजा है, क्योंकि किसी चीज़ की शोभा तभी शुभ रूप से चमकती है जब उसे बड़े लोग भेंट करें।

इत्युक्तवति तस्मिंस्तु प्रत्युवाचैन्द्रजालिकः । जलदस्तनिते शान्ते चातकोऽम्बुधरं यथा ॥ ॥ ३८ ॥

ityuktavati tasmiṃstu pratyuvācaindrajālikaḥ | jaladastanite śānte cātako'mbudharaṃ yathā || 38 ||

When he had said this, the magician replied, as the chataka bird answers back once the cloud's thunder has fallen silent.

जब उसने यह कह दिया, तो जादूगर ने जवाब दिया, ठीक वैसे ही जैसे चातक पक्षी बोलता है जब बादल की गरज शांत हो जाती है।

सदश्वमेनमारुह्य भुवनं विहर प्रभो । स्वप्रतापाहितानल्पशोभामुर्वीं रविर्यथा ॥ ॥ ३९ ॥

sadaśvamenamāruhya bhuvanaṃ vihara prabho | svapratāpāhitānalpaśobhāmurvīṃ raviryathā || 39 ||

Mount this fine horse, my lord, and roam the world, as the sun roams the earth, whose great beauty is set there by his own heat and light.

हे स्वामी, इस अच्छे घोड़े पर सवार होकर संसार में घूमिए, जैसे सूरज धरती पर घूमता है, जिसकी बड़ी शोभा उसी की गर्मी और रोशनी से बनी है।

अश्वमालोकयामास तेनोक्त इति पार्थिवः । निर्घातस्तनितं मेघं मयूर इव सूत्करः ॥ ॥ ४० ॥

aśvamālokayāmāsa tenokta iti pārthivaḥ | nirghātastanitaṃ meghaṃ mayūra iva sūtkaraḥ || 40 ||

Told this by him, the king looked at the horse, crying out with excitement, as a peacock cries out at a cloud that thunders with a crash of lightning.

उसकी यह बात सुनकर राजा ने घोड़े को देखा और खुशी से पुकार उठा, ठीक वैसे ही जैसे मोर बिजली की गरज वाले बादल को देखकर पुकार उठता है।

अथानिमेषया दृष्ट्या राजा चित्रोपमाकृतिः । बभूवालोकयन्नश्वं लिपिकर्मार्पितोपमः ॥ ॥ ४१ ॥

athānimeṣayā dṛṣṭyā rājā citropamākṛtiḥ | babhūvālokayann aśvaṃ lipikarmārpitopamaḥ || 41 ||

Then, with an unblinking gaze, the king became still, looking at the horse like a figure fixed in a painting, as if set there by a painter's brush.

फिर बिना पलक झपकाए, राजा घोड़े को देखते हुए ऐसे स्थिर हो गया मानो किसी चित्र में बना हुआ हो, जैसे किसी चित्रकार की कूची से बनाकर बिठा दिया गया हो।

क्षणमालोक्य पीठस्थस्तस्थौ संस्थगितेक्षणःदृष्ट्या''क्षुब्धः समुद्रो'द्रिमीनकैः करवो यथा ॥ ४२ ॥

kṣaṇamālokya pīṭhasthastasthau saṃsthagitekṣaṇaḥdṛṣṭyā''kṣubdhaḥ samudro'drimīnakaiḥ karavo yathā || 42 ||

Having looked for a moment, he stayed seated on his throne, his eyes held frozen and still, like an ocean that stays unstirred even among huge, mountain-sized fish.

क्षणभर देखकर वह अपने आसन पर बैठा रहा, उसकी आँखें बिना हिले जड़ हो गईं, जैसे कोई सागर पहाड़ जैसी बड़ी मछलियों के बीच भी शांत और अडोल रहता है।

तस्थौ मुहूर्तयुग्मं स ध्यानासक्त इवात्मनिवीतरागो मुनिः क्षुब्धः परानन्द इव स्थितः ॥ ४३ ॥

tasthau muhūrtayugmaṃ sa dhyānāsakta ivātmanivītarāgo muniḥ kṣubdhaḥ parānanda iva sthitaḥ || 43 ||

He remained still like this for two muhurtas, as though lost in meditation on his own self, like a passionless sage who, though stirred within, stands as if fixed in supreme bliss.

वह दो मुहूर्त तक ऐसे ही स्थिर रहा, मानो अपने भीतर ध्यान में डूबा हो, ठीक वैसे ही जैसे कोई वैरागी मुनि भीतर से हिल जाने पर भी परम आनंद में डूबा हुआ स्थिर खड़ा रहता है।

बोधितः केनचिन्नासौ स्वप्रतापजितोर्जितःधिया कामप्ययं भूयश्चिन्तां चिन्तयतीति च ॥ ४४ ॥

bodhitaḥ kenacinnāsau svapratāpajitorjitaḥdhiyā kāmapyayaṃ bhūyaścintāṃ cintayatīti ca || 44 ||

No one could rouse him from it, he who had grown mighty through his own splendor and valor, and people began to think that his mind was once again lost in some deep thought.

कोई भी उसे उस हाल से जगा न सका, वह अपने ही तेज और पराक्रम से बलवान बना हुआ था, और लोग सोचने लगे कि वह फिर से किसी गहरे विचार में खोया हुआ है।

बभूवुः केवलं तत्र निःस्पन्दसितचामराःचामरिण्यो हि शर्वर्यः स्तम्भितेन्दुकरा इव ॥ ४५ ॥

babhūvuḥ kevalaṃ tatra niḥspandasitacāmarāḥcāmariṇyo hi śarvaryaḥ stambhitendukarā iva || 45 ||

There, only the whisk bearing women remained, their white fans unmoving, like nights whose moonbeams had turned frozen and still.

वहाँ केवल चँवर डुलाने वाली स्त्रियाँ रह गईं, उनके सफेद चँवर बिना हिले रुक गए, जैसे वे रातें हों जिनकी चाँदनी की किरणें जमकर स्थिर हो गई हों।

विरेजुर्विस्मयापूर्णा निःस्पन्दास्ते सभासदःनिःस्पन्दकिञ्जल्कदलाः पद्माः पङ्ककृता इव ॥ ४६ ॥

virejurvismayāpūrṇā niḥspandāste sabhāsadaḥniḥspandakiñjalkadalāḥ padmāḥ paṅkakṛtā iva || 46 ||

Those people in the assembly, filled with wonder and completely still, shone like lotuses set in the mud, their filaments and petals unmoving.

सभा में बैठे वे लोग, आश्चर्य से भरे और बिल्कुल स्थिर, ऐसे चमक रहे थे जैसे कीचड़ में उगे कमल, जिनकी पंखुड़ियाँ और रेशे बिना हिले स्थिर पड़े हों।

प्रशशाम सभास्थाने जनकोलाहलः शनैः। प्रशान्तप्रावृषि व्योमन्याम्भोदमिव गर्जितम् ॥ ४७ ॥

praśaśāma sabhāsthāne janakolāhalaḥ śanaiḥ| praśāntaprāvṛṣi vyomanyāmbhodamiva garjitam || 47 ||

The noise of the people in the assembly hall slowly died down, like the roar of a cloud in the sky fading away as the rainy season grows calm.

सभा में लोगों का शोर धीरे धीरे शांत हो गया, जैसे बरसात का मौसम थमने पर आकाश में बादल की गरज शांत हो जाती है।

संदेहसागरे मग्ना जग्मुश्चिन्तां सुमन्त्रिणः। विषीदति गदापाणावसुराजाविवामराः ॥ ४८ ॥

saṃdehasāgare magnā jagmuścintāṃ sumantrinaḥ| viṣīdati gadāpāṇāvasurājāvivāmarāḥ || 48 ||

Sunk in an ocean of doubt, the wise ministers fell into anxious thought, like the gods growing anxious when Indra, the mace bearer, despairs before the king of the demons.

संदेह के सागर में डूबे बुद्धिमान मंत्री चिंता में पड़ गए, ठीक वैसे ही जैसे देवता चिंतित हो जाते हैं जब गदाधारी इंद्र असुरों के राजा के सामने निराश हो जाता है।

विततविस्मितजिह्नितया तया जनतया भयमोहविषण्णया। स्तिमितचक्षुषि भूमिपतौ स्थिते मुकुलिताज्जवनस्य धृता द्युतिः ॥ ४९ ॥

vitatavismajitajihnitayā tayā janatayā bhayamohaviṣaṇṇayā| stimita cakṣuṣi bhūmipatau sthite mukulitājjavanasya dhṛtā dyutiḥ || 49 ||

While that whole crowd stood spread out, made shy and bewildered with wonder, sunk in fear and confusion, and the king stood there with his eyes fixed unmoving, the shine of the swift horse seemed to draw inward, folded up like a closed bud.

जब वह पूरी भीड़ आश्चर्य से सकुचाई और घबराई हुई खड़ी थी, डर और उलझन में डूबी हुई, और राजा वहाँ अपनी आँखें एक जगह टिकाए खड़ा था, तब उस तेज़ घोड़े की चमक मानो किसी बंद कली की तरह सिमट गई थी।
