It quickly turns the short into the long, and the long into the short. It turns other things entirely into itself, and just as much turns itself into something else.
prādeśamātramapi yadvastubhāvanayaiava tat | svayaṃ saṃpannayevāśu karotyadrīndrabhāsuram || 3 ||
A thing that is only a hand-span in size, by mere imagining of it, the mind itself, as though the thing had truly grown, quickly makes it shine as huge as the king of mountains.
labdhapratiṣṭhaṃ paramātpadādullasitaṃ manaḥ | nimeṣeṇaiva saṃsārānkaroti na karoti ca || 4 ||
The mind gains a footing and leaps up from the supreme state, and in a single blink it creates whole worlds, and yet, at the same time, it creates nothing at all.
It quickly turns what is real into unreal, or fully turns what is unreal into real, and the mind, having imagined things that way, takes on pleasures and pains to match just what it imagined.
Then that very action, its result fixed by the mind, delivers its fruit, or no fruit, in an instant, just as a creeper watered at the right time bears just such fruit.
manaḥsarvajanakrīḍānṛjambālalaveṣvataḥ | kimetaddhi padārtheṣu rūḍhaṃ jagati kalpyate || 11 ||
The mind plays with everyone the way a child plays with little lumps of mud, so what is this, then, among all these things, that is taken as fixed and real in the world?
Just as time, the maker of seasons, changes the very shape of a tree, so the mind changes these things into something quite different from what they are.
In a daydream, in a sleeping dream, and in the workings of imagination, in these plays of its own, the mind turns a mere hoofprint of water into a stretch of many miles.
Inside itself, the mind turns a whole world-age into a single instant, and turns a single instant into a whole world-age. Everything depends on the mind, that is why the wise say it governs the order of place and time.
tīvramandatvasaṃvegādbahutvālpatvabhedataḥ | vilambanena ca ciraṃ natu śaktimaśaktitaḥ || 15 ||
Through being sharp or slow in speed, through differences of being much or little, and through being drawn out for a long time, but never because its power has actually failed.
sakartṛkarmakaraṇaṃ yadidaṃ cetayamāgatam| draṣṭṛdarśanadṛśyāḍhyaṃ tatsarvaṃ cittameva ca || 18 ||
Whatever appears here as something thought of, along with its doer, its deed, and its means, and full of the seer, the seeing, and the seen, all of that is nothing but the mind.
cittaṃ jaganti bhuvanāni vanāntarāṇi saṃlakṣyate svayamupāgatamātmabhedaiḥ| keyūramaulikaṭakaiśca lasatsvarūpaṃ tyaktvaiva kāñcanadhiyeva jane na hema || 19 ||
The mind alone is seen as all these worlds, realms, and forests, it has itself turned into what looks like many separate things. It is just like gold, a person, without holding onto the thought that it is gold, sees the same gold shining as a bracelet, a crown, and a bangle.
