13.105.1

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | muhūrtadvitayenātha bodhamāpa mahīpatiḥ | prāvṛṣeṇyāmbunirmukta-mambhoruhamivot-tamam || 1 ||

Sri Vasishtha said: After two muhurtas passed, the king woke up, looking fine, like a fine lotus that has shed the rainy season's water.

āsanātsāṅgadottam̐saḥ prabuddho'sāvakampayat | savanābhogashṛṅgāgryo bhūkamp iva parvataḥ || 2 ||

Waking up, wearing his armlets and his crown, he began to shake on his seat, like a mountain with huge spreading peaks shaking in an earthquake.

babhūvātha prabuddho'sāvāsanopari kampitaḥ | vikṣubdha iva pātālavāraṇe śaṅkarācalaḥ || 3 ||

Then, awake, he began shaking on his seat, like the mountain of Shankara shaking when stirred up by the elephant of the underworld.

patantaṃ dhārayāmāsustam̐ purogā nṛpaṃ bhujaiḥ | meruṃ pralayavikṣubdhaṃ kulaśailāstatairiva || 4 ||

His chief attendants held up the falling king with their arms, just as the great range mountains hold up Mount Meru with their slopes when it shakes at the end of the world.

purogairdhāryamāṇo'sau paryākulamatirnṛpaḥ | vīcivikṣobhitasyendorbabhāra vanamāḥ śriyaḥ || 5 ||

Held up by his attendants, the king, his mind utterly confused, carried the beauty of a moon shaken by ripples on water.

What is this place, whose is this court, the king murmured slowly, like a bee humming inside a sinking lotus bud.

athovāca sabhā deva kimetaditi sādaram| raṇanmadhukarī bhānuṃ dṛṣṭarāhumivālinī || 7 ||

Then the assembly said respectfully, my lord, what is this, like a humming swarm of bees buzzing at the sun on seeing Rahu.

athainaṃ paripapracchuḥ purogā mantrīṇastathā| pralayollāsasaṃtrastaṃ mārkaṇḍeyamivāmarāḥ || 8 ||

Then his chief attendants and the ministers questioned him, just as the gods questioned Markandeya when he was terrified by the uproar of the great dissolution.

tvayītthaṃ saṃsthite deva vayamatyantamākulāḥ| abhedyamapi bhindanti nirnimittaṃ bhramā manaḥ || 9 ||

My lord, with you in this state, we are utterly troubled. Delusions come without any cause and split even a mind that cannot be split.

āpātaramaṇīyeṣu paryantaviraseṣu ca| bhogeṣvivikalpeṣu keṣu te lulitaṃ manaḥ || 10 ||

On what thoughts has your mind been shaken, thoughts that, like pleasures, feel delightful at first touch but turn tasteless at the end?

satatodāravṛttāsu kathāsu pariśītalam manaste nirmalaṃ kasmātsaṃbhraemeṣu nimajjati || 11 ||

Why does your mind, which stays cool and pure in noble conversation, sink into confusion now?

tucchālambanamālūnaviśīrṇaṃ lokavṛttiṣu mano mohamupādatte na mahattvavijṛmbhitam || 12 ||

A mind that rests on small worthless supports gets cut and broken apart by worldly affairs and falls into delusion, but a mind grown large by greatness does not.

sātatyena hi yaivāsya manaso vṛttirutthitā śarīramadamattāsu tāmevaitadvidhāvati || 13 ||

Whatever habit has kept arising in this mind again and again, running after the intoxication of pride in the body, toward that very habit this mind keeps running.

atucchālambanaṃ dhīraṃ prabuddhaṃ guṇahāri ca tavāpi hi manaścitramālūnamiva lakṣyate || 14 ||

Even your mind, which rests on no small support, which is steady, awake, and full of good qualities, now looks, strangely, as if it has been cut down.

anabhyastavivekaṃ hi deśakālavasānugam mantrauṣadhivaśaṃ yāti mano nodāravṛttimat || 15 ||

A mind that has not practiced discernment and follows the pull of place and time falls under the power of spells and medicines, but a mind of noble, lofty conduct does not.

nityamāttavivekasya kathamālūnaśīrṇatādhunoti vitataṃ ceto vātyeva vibudhācalam || 16 ||

How can being cut and withered shake the vast mind of one who has always held on to discernment, any more than a windstorm can shake Mount Meru, the mountain of the gods?

iti jātānugīrṇasya bhūpateḥ kāntirānanambhūṣayāmāsa śītāṃśuṃ māsānta iva pūrṇatā || 17 ||

As this thought arose and was spoken within the king, brightness lit up his face, like fullness lighting up the cool-rayed moon at the end of the month.

rarāja rājā saumyāsyamunmīlitavilocanaḥgate himartāvullāsipuṣpaugha iva mādhavaḥ || 18 ||

The king shone, his face gentle, his eyes wide open, like spring shining with a burst of blooming flowers when the cold season has passed.

athātisaṃbhramāścaryakhinnāsmṛtimukho babhauāsannamṛtyurālokya rāhumindurivāmbare || 19 ||

Then, worn out and confused by great agitation and astonishment, his memory clouded, his face looked like the moon in the sky, close to being swallowed, on seeing Rahu.

aindrajālikamālokya provācātha hasannivababhuṃ hiṃsātmakaṃ dṛṣṭvā sarparūpīva takṣakaḥ || 20 ||

Seeing the magician, he then spoke as if laughing, seeing the harmful one, like Takshaka seeing one in serpent form.

jālma jālajaṭālena kimetadbhava tā kṛtam | yenāspandaprasanno'bdhiḥ kṣaṇādetya prasannatām || 21 ||

Wretch, tangled in your web of illusions, what have you done, that made the still, calm ocean come to calm in a moment?

citraṃ citrā hi devasya padārthśataśaktiyaḥ | suśaktamapi me cittaṃ yābhirmohe niveśitam || 22 ||

Strange indeed are the many powers of the hundreds of things belonging to fate, by which even my capable mind was pushed into delusion.

kva vayaṃ lokaparyāyakṛtāntapadavedinaḥ | kva manomohadāyinyo vitatāḥ prakṛtāpadaḥ || 23 ||

Where are we, who know the final step reached through the world's endless cycle, and where are these vast troubles of the moment, which fill the mind with delusion?

apyabhyastamahājñānaṃ manastiṣṭhati dehake kadācinmohamādatte kṣaṇaṃ matimatāmapi || 24 ||

Even a mind that has practiced great knowledge, as long as it stays in the body, sometimes falls into delusion for a moment, even the minds of wise people.

idamāścaryamākhyānaṃ śrūyatāṃ re sabhāsadaḥ | mama śāmbarikeṇeha yanmuhūrtaṃ pradarśitam || 25 ||

Listen to this astonishing story, o members of the court. This is what my magician showed me here in just a moment.

263.105.26

dṛṣṭavānahametasminbahvīḥ kāryadaśāścalāḥ | muhūrtaṃ prārthito'dhvastśakrasṛṣṭirivālajaḥ || 26 ||

In that one moment I saw many changing turns of events. When I begged him for just that short time, he showed me something like a creation of Indra that is destroyed as soon as it appears, never really born.

ityuktvonmukhanetreṣu sabhyeṣu sa hasanniva | rājā varṇayituṃ citraṃ vṛttāntamupacakrame || 27 ||

Having said this, while the courtiers looked up at him with eager eyes, the king smiled a little and began to tell the strange story.

rājovāca | iha vividhapadārthasaṃkulāyāṃ hradanadapattanaparvatākulāyāṃ | kulaśikharisamudrasaṃkarāyāṃ bhuvi vibhavāvalito'styayaṃ pradeśaḥ || 28 ||

The king said: here, in this land crowded with all kinds of things, full of lakes, rivers, towns and mountains, rich with great mountain ranges and seas, this is a region full of splendor.
