śrīrāma uvāca | kimucyate muniśreṣṭha bālakākhyāyikākramaḥ | krameṇa kathayaitanme manovarṇanakāraṇam || 1 ||
Sri Rama said: O best of sages, what is this "children's story" method? Tell me about it in order, and the reason it is used to describe the mind.
śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | ko’pi mugdhamatirbālo dhātrīṃ pṛcchati rāghava | kāṃcidvinodinīṃ dhātri varṇayākhyāyikāmiti || 2 ||
Sri Vasishtha said: O Raghava, some innocent-minded child asks his nurse, "Nurse, tell me some fun story."
sā bālasya vinodāya dhātrī tasya mahāmate | ākhyāyikāṃ kathayati prasannamadhurākṣaram || 3 ||
That nurse, O great sage, tells the child a story for his amusement, in clear, sweet words.
kvacitsanti mahātmāno rājaputrāstrayaḥ śubhāḥ | dhārmikāḥ śauryamuditā atyantāsati pattane || 4 ||
Once there were three noble young princes, good and brave, in a city that never existed at all.
vistīrṇe śūnyanagare vyomnīva jalatārakāḥ | dvau na jātau tathaikastu garbha eva na saṃsthitaḥ || 5 ||
In that vast, empty city - like stars reflected in the sky's water - two of the princes were never born, and the third was not even conceived in the womb.
athātyuttamalābhārthaṃ kadācitsamavāyataḥ | vibandhavaḥ khinnamukhāḥ śokopahatacetasaḥ || 6 ||
Then once, wanting some very great gain, they gathered together. They had no kinsmen, their faces were sad, and their minds were struck with grief.
te tasmācchūnyanagarān nirgatā vitatānanāḥ | gaganādiva saṃśliṣṭā budhaśukraśanaiścarāḥ || 7 ||
They left that empty city, their faces drawn with sorrow, huddled close together like Mercury, Venus, and Saturn pressed together in the sky.
śirīṣasukumārāṅgāḥ pṛṣṭhato'rkeṇa tāpitāḥ | mārge'hani gatā grīṣmatāpārtāḥ pallavā iva || 8 ||
Their bodies were as delicate as shirisha flowers, and the sun burned their backs. They walked the road by day, suffering like tender leaves scorched by summer heat.
saṃtaptamārgasikatādagdhapādasaroruhāḥ | hā tāta ceti śocanto mṛgā yūthacyutā iva || 9 ||
Their feet, soft as lotuses, were burned by the hot sand of the road. Crying "Oh Father!", they grieved like deer that had fallen away from the herd.
darbhāgrabhinnacaraṇāstāpakhinnāṅgasandhayaḥ | ullaṅghya dūramadhvānaṃ dhūlidhūsaramūrtayaḥ || 10 ||
The sharp tips of grass cut their feet, and the joints of their bodies ached from the heat. They crossed a long stretch of road, their bodies grey with dust.
mañjarījālajaṭilaṃ phalapallavamālitam | mṛgapakṣigaṇādhāraṃ prāpurmārge tarutrayam || 11 ||
On the road they came to three trees, thick with clusters of buds, covered with fruit and leaves, giving shelter to deer and birds.
yasminvṛkṣatraye vṛkṣau dvau na jātau manāgapi | bījameva tṛtīyasya svārohasya na vidyate || 12 ||
Of these three trees, two had not grown even a little, and for the third there was not even a seed from which it could grow.
viśrāntāste pariśrāntāstatraikasya taroradhaḥ | pārijātatalaḥ svarge śakrānilayamā iva || 13 ||
Tired and worn out, they rested there under one of the trees, beneath the parijata tree, like Indra's attendants resting in heaven.
phalānyamṛtakalpāni bhuktvā pītvā ca tadrāsam | kṛtvā gulucchakairmālāṃ ciraṃ viśramya te yayuḥ || 14 ||
They ate fruits like nectar and drank their juice. They made a garland from the clusters, rested a long time, and then went on.
punardūrataraṃ gatvā madhyāhne samupasthite | sarittritayamāsedustaraṅgataralāravam || 15 ||
Going farther still, when midday came, they reached three rivers whose waves made a rippling sound.
tatraikā pariśuṣkaiva manāgapyambu na dvayoḥ| vidyate saritordṛṣṭirandhalocanayoriva || 16 ||
Of these, one river was completely dry, and in the other two there was not even a little water to be seen, like sight in the eyes of two blind men.
pariśuṣkā bhṛśaṃ yāsau tasyāṃ te sasnurādṛtāḥ| gharmārtā iva gaṅgāyāṃ brahmaviṣṇuharā iva || 17 ||
In the one river that was completely dry, they bathed with great care, like Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva bathing in the Ganga when tired by heat.
ciraṃ kṛtvā jalakrīḍāṃ pītvā kṣīropamaṃ payaḥ| jagmuste rājatanayāḥ prahṛṣṭamanasaḥ svayam || 18 ||
After playing in the water a long time and drinking water like milk, the princes went on, their minds full of joy.
athāsedurdinasyaante lambamāne divākare| bhaviṣyannavanirmāṇaṃ nagaraṃ nagasannibham || 19 ||
Then, at the end of the day, when the sun hung low, they reached a city that was still to be built, one that looked like a mountain.
patākāpadminīvyāptaṃ nīlākāśajalāśayam| dūraśrutasamullāpagāyannāgaramaṇḍalam || 20 ||
It was covered with flags like lotuses on a pond, its water tanks the colour of the blue sky, and the whole city sang with talk heard from far away.
dadṛśustatra ramyāṇi trīṇi sadbhavanāni te | maṇikāñcanagehāni śṛṅgāṇīva mahāgireḥ || 21 ||
There they saw three beautiful, fine houses, made of jewels and gold, like the peaks of a great mountain.
anirmitē dvē sadanē ekaṃ nirbhitti tatra vai | abhittimandiraṃ cāru praviṣṭāstē narāstrayaḥ || 22 ||
Two of these houses were not built, and one had no walls at all. The three men went into that beautiful house without walls.
saṃpraviśyopaviśyāśu viharantō varānanāḥ | prāpuḥ sthālītrayaṃ tatra taptakāñcanakalpitam || 23 ||
Going inside and sitting down quickly, the fair-faced princes played about, and found three vessels there, made of heated gold.
tatra karpuratāṃ yātē dvē ekā cūrṇatāṃ gatā | jagṛhuścūrṇarūpāṃ tāṃ sthālīṃ tē dīrghabuddhayaḥ || 24 ||
There, two of the vessels broke into shards, and one turned to powder. Those wise princes picked up the vessel that had turned to powder.
drōṇairnavanavatyā tais tasyāṃ drōṇena cāndhasaḥ | tatra drōṇaśataṃ hīnaṃ randhitaṃ bahubhojibhiḥ || 25 ||
With those ninety-nine dronas, and one more drona of grain besides, a hundred dronas short by one were cooked there by the big eaters.
nimantritāstrayastais tu brāhmaṇā rājasūnubhiḥ | dvau nirdehāvathaikasya mukhameva na vidyate || 26 ||
Three brahmins were invited there by those king's sons. Two of them had no body, and the third had no mouth at all.
nirmukhenāndhasastatra bhuktam droṇaśataṃ suta | viprabhukta avaśeṣaṃ tu bhuktamandho nṛpātmajaiḥ || 27 ||
O son, the mouthless one ate a hundred dronas of that food there. And the food left over after the brahmin ate was eaten by the king's sons.
tribhiste rājaputrāśca parāṃ nirvṛtimāgatāḥ | bhaviṣyannagare tasmin rājaputrāstrayo hi te | sukhamadya sthitāḥ putra mṛgayāvyavahāriṇaḥ || 28 ||
By those three brahmins the king's sons reached supreme contentment. In that Future City, those same three king's sons are living happily today, O son, busy with hunting.
ākhyāyikeṣā kathitā mayā ramyā tavānagha | etāṃ hṛdi kuru prājña vidagdhas tvaṃ bhaviṣyasi || 29 ||
O sinless one, this charming story has been told by me to you. Keep it in your heart, O wise one; you will become clever.
dhātryeti kathitā rāma bālakākhyāyikā śubhā | tuṣṭiṃ jagāma bālaśca śubhākhyāyikayānayā || 30 ||
O Rama, thus the nurse told this good children's story, and the child became satisfied by this good story.
eṣā hi kathitā rāma cittākhyānakathāṃ prati| bālakākhyāyikā tubhyaṃ mayā kamalalocana || 31 ||
O Rama, lotus-eyed one, this children's story has been told by me to you for the sake of the story about the mind.
iyam saṃsāraracanā sthitimevamupāgatā| bālakākhyāyikevograiḥ saṃkalpairdṛḍhakalpitaiḥ || 32 ||
This structure of the world has come to stand in just this way, like a children's story, built firm by strong, forceful thoughts.
vikalpajālakaiveyaṃ pratibhāsātmikānagha| bandhamokṣādikalanārūpeṇa parijṛmbhate || 33 ||
O sinless one, this is nothing but a net of thoughts, made only of appearance. It unfolds in the form of things like bondage and freedom.
saṃkalpamātrāditardvidyate neha kiṃcana| saṃkalpavaśataḥ kiṃcinn na kiṃcitkiṃcideva vā || 34 ||
Nothing else at all exists here besides thought alone. By the power of thought, a thing is something, or it is nothing, or it is only some little thing.
dyauḥ kṣamā vāyurākāśaṃ parvatāḥ sarito diśaḥ| saṃkalpakacitaṃ sarvamevaṃ svapnavadātmanaḥ || 35 ||
Sky, earth, wind, space, mountains, rivers, and directions — all this is built of thought alone, of the self, just like a dream.
rājaputrāstrayo nadyo bhaviṣyannagare yathā | yathā saṃkalparacanā tatheyaṃ hi jagatsthitiḥ || 36 ||
Just as the three king's sons were rivers in the Future City, formed only by thought, so indeed is this state of the world.
saṃkalpamātramabhitaḥ parisphurati cañcalaḥ | payomātrātmako'mbhodhirambhasīvātmanātmani || 37 ||
Mere thought alone trembles restlessly on every side, like an ocean made only of water, shaking by itself within itself, in the water.
saṃkalpamātraṃ prathamamutthitaṃ paramātmanaḥ | tadidaṃ sphāratāṃ yātaṃ vyāpārairdivasaṃ yathā || 38 ||
Mere thought first arose from the supreme self. This same thought has now grown wide through its workings, like the day.
saṃkalpajālakalanaiva jagatsamagraṃ saṃkalpameva nanu viddhi vilāsacetyam | saṃkalpamātramalamutsṛja nirvikalpamāśritya niścayamavāpnuhi rāma śāntim || 39 ||
The whole world is nothing but the working of a net of thought. Know for certain that it is only thought, a thing seen in play. Enough of it — give up mere thought. Take refuge in the thought-free, and, O Rama, with certainty reach peace.
