śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | prāpya vyādhivinirmuktaṃ dehamalpādhivedanam | tathātmani samādadhyādyathā bhūyo na jāyate | || 1 ||

English

Vasishtha said: Having obtained a body free from illness, one that feels little pain, a person should settle his mind on the self in such a way that he is never born again.

daivaṃ puruṣakāreṇa yo nivartitumicchati | iha vāmutra jagati sa saṃpūrṇābhivāñchitaḥ | || 2 ||

English

Whoever wants to turn back fate through his own effort has all his wishes fully granted, in this world and the next.

ye samudyogamutsṛjya sthitā daivaparāyaṇāḥ | te dharmamarthaṃ kāmaṃ ca nāśayantyātmavidviṣaḥ | || 3 ||

English

Those who give up their own effort and remain devoted to fate destroy dharma, wealth, and pleasure alike - they are enemies of their own selves.

saṃvitspando manaḥspanda aindriyaspanda eva ca | etāni puruṣārthasya rūpāṇyebhyaḥ phalodayaḥ | || 4 ||

English

The stirring of awareness, the stirring of the mind, and the stirring of the senses - these are the forms that effort takes, and from them the result comes about.

yathā saṃvedanaṃ cetastathā tatspandamṛcchati | tathaiva kāyaścalati tathaiva phalabhoktṛtā | || 5 ||

English

As the mind feels something, it stirs in just that way; the body then moves in just that same way, and in just that way comes the experience of the result.

ābālametatsaṃsiddhaṃ yatra yatra yathā yathādaivaṃ tu na kvaciddṛṣṭamato jagati pauruṣam || 6 ||

English

This has been true and known from childhood, wherever and however it happens; but fate has never been seen anywhere - so in this world, it is effort that is real.

puruṣārthena devānāṃ gurureva bṛhaspatiḥśukro daityendragurutāṃ puruṣārthena cāsthitaḥ || 7 ||

English

It was through his own effort that Brihaspati became the guru of the gods, and it was through effort that Shukra came to hold the position of guru to the king of the demons.

English

O sadho, even the finest of men, once afflicted by misery, poverty, and suffering, have risen through effort alone to become equal to Indra, the king of the gods.

English

Great men, who tasted vast wealth and enjoyed countless marvels, have also, through faults in their own effort, ended up as guests in hell.

bhāvābhāvasahasreṣu daśāsu vividhāsu casvapauruṣavaśādeva nivṛttā bhūtajātayaḥ || 10 ||

English

Amid thousands of ups and downs, and in all sorts of different circumstances, the many kinds of living beings have made their way through only by the strength of their own effort.

śāstrato gurutaścaiva svataśceti trisiddhayaḥsarvatra puruṣārthasya na daivasya kadācana || 11 ||

English

From scripture, from a teacher, and from oneself - these are the three ways anything is accomplished; and everywhere, this belongs to effort, never at all to fate.

aśubheṣu samāviṣṭaṃ śubheṣvevāvatārayetprayatnāccittamityeṣa sarvaśāstrārthasaṃgrahaḥ || 12 ||

English

The mind that has fallen into bad things should be steered, through effort, into good things alone - this is the whole essence of what all the scriptures teach.

yacchreyo yadatucchaṃ ca yadapāyavivarjitamtattadācara yatnena putreti guravaḥ sthitāḥ || 13 ||

English

Whatever is truly good, whatever is not trifling, and whatever brings no harm - do just that, through effort, my son - this is what the elders have always taught.

yathā yathā prayatno me phalamāśu tathā tathāityahaṃ pauruṣādeva phalabhāṅ na tu daivataḥ || 14 ||

English

The more effort I make, the sooner the result comes - so I get results only through effort, never through fate.

pauruṣāddṛśyate siddhiḥ pauruṣāddhīmatāṃ kramaḥdaivamāśvāsanāmātraṃ duḥkhe pelavabuddhiṣu || 15 ||

English

Success is seen to come from effort, and the progress of the wise, too, comes from effort. Fate is only something for weak-minded people to lean on for comfort when they are in pain.

pratyakṣapramukhairnityaṃ pramāṇaiḥ pauruṣakramaḥphalito dṛśyate loke deśāntaragamādikaḥ || 16 ||

English

Through evidence, direct perception first of all, we can always see in the world that the working of effort bears fruit - for example, when someone travels from one place to another, and so on.

bhoktā tṛpyati nābhoktā gantā gacchati nāgatiḥvaktā vakti na cāvaktā pauruṣaṃ saphalaṃ nṛṇām || 17 ||

English

The one who eats is satisfied, not the one who does not eat. The one who walks reaches somewhere, not the one who does not walk. The one who speaks says something, not the one who stays silent. Effort is what bears fruit for people.

pauruṣeṇa durantebhyaḥ saṃkaṭebhyaḥ subuddhayaḥsamuttarantyayatnena na tu moghatayānayā || 18 ||

English

Through effort, wise people cross over even endless dangers with ease - and that ease is not for nothing.

yo yo yathā prayatate sa sa tattatphalaikabhākna tu tūṣṇīṃ sthiteneha kenacitprāpyate phalam || 19 ||

English

Whoever makes effort, in whatever way, is the one who gets that particular result. No one who simply sits still gets any result at all.

śubhena puruṣārthena śubhamāsādyate phalamaśubhenāśubhaṃ rāma yathecchasi tathā kuru || 20 ||

English

Good effort brings a good result, and bad effort brings a bad result. Now, Rama, do as you please.

puruṣārthātphalaprāptirdeśakālavaśādihaprāptā cireṇa śīghraṃ vā yāsau daivamiti smṛtā || 21 ||

English

The result comes from effort, but depending on place and time it comes slowly or quickly - and it is this that is called fate.

na daivaṃ dṛśyate dṛṣṭyā na ca lokāntare sthitamuktaṃ daivābhidhānena svarloke karmaṇaḥ phalam || 22 ||

English

Fate cannot be seen with the eyes, nor does it sit as something in another world. What goes by the name fate is simply the fruit of one's own actions, to be had in the heavenly world.

puruṣo jāyate loke vardhate jīryate punaḥna tatra dṛśyate daivaṃ jarāyauvanabālyavat || 23 ||

English

A person is born into the world, grows up, and then grows old - and in all this, no fate is to be seen, any more than there is some separate cause behind childhood, youth, and old age.

arthaprāpakakāryaikaprayatnaparatā budhaiḥproktā pauruṣaśabdena sarvamāsādyate'nayā || 24 ||

English

A steady, single-minded effort directed at the one action that achieves one's purpose - this is what the wise mean by the word effort, and everything is gained through it.

deśāddeśāntaraprāptirhastasya dravyadhāraṇamvyāpāraśca tathāṅgānāṃ pauruṣeṇa na daivataḥ || 25 ||

English

Travelling from one place to another, the hand grasping an object, and the movement of the body's limbs - all of this happens through effort, not through fate.

anarthaprāptikāryaikaprayatnaparatā tu yāproktā pronmattaceṣṭeti na kiṃcitprāpyate'nayā || 26 ||

English

But when that same single-minded effort is put into an action that only brings harm, it is called the behaviour of a madman - nothing at all is gained by it.

kriyayā spandadharmiṇyā svārthasādhakatā svayamsādhusaṃgamasacchāstratīkṣṇayonnīyate dhiyā || 27 ||

English

Through action that involves real movement and exertion, the ability to achieve one's own good develops on its own - and it grows sharper with the intelligence gained from the company of good people and true teachings.

anantasamatānandaṃ paramārthaṃ svakaṃ viduḥsa yebhyaḥ prāpyate yatnātsevyāste śāstrasādhavaḥ || 28 ||

English

They know the endless bliss of perfect evenness as their own highest truth; and those good, scripture-knowing people through whom this is gained by effort should be served.

sacchāstrādiguṇo matyā sacchāstrādiguṇānmatiḥvivardhete mitho'bhyāsātsarojāviva kālataḥ || 29 ||

English

The virtue found in true teachings grows through the mind, and the mind grows through the virtue found in true teachings; the two grow together through practice, like two lotuses growing together over time.

ābālyādalamabhyastaiḥ śāstrasatsaṃgamādibhiḥguṇaiḥ puruṣayatnena svārthaḥ saṃpadyate hitaḥ || 30 ||

English

By practising, from childhood on, virtues such as studying true teachings and keeping the company of good people, and through one's own effort, one's real good is achieved.

pauruṣeṇa jitā daityāḥ sthāpitā bhuvanakriyāḥracitāni jagantīha viṣṇunā na ca daivataḥ || 31 ||

English

It was through effort that Vishnu conquered the demons, set up the workings of the universe, and fashioned the worlds here - not through fate.

jagati puruṣakārakāraṇe'smin kuru raghunātha ciraṃ tathā prayatnamvrajasi tarusarīsṛpābhidhānāṃ subhaga yathā na daśāmaśaṅka eva || 32 ||

English

In this world, where human effort is the real cause of everything, keep up such effort for a long time, Raghunatha, so that you never fall, fortunate one, without a doubt, into a state such as that of a tree or a crawling reptile.
