śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | tasmātprākpauruṣāddaivaṃ nānyattatprojjhya dūrataḥ | sādhusaṅgamasacchāstrairjīvamuttārayedbalāt || 1 ||

English

Vasishtha said: So fate is nothing but effort made earlier. Throw that idea of fate far away, and use the company of good people and true teachings to force the living being across the ocean of rebirth.

yathā yathā prayatnaḥ syād bhavedāśu phalaṃ tathā | iti pauruṣamevāsti daivamastu tadeva ca || 2 ||

English

However much effort is made, the result comes just as quickly, in that same measure. So there is only effort - let fate be nothing but that very effort.

duḥkhādyathā duḥkhakāle hā kaṣṭamiti kathyate | hākaṣṭaśabdaparyāyastathā hā daivamityapi || 3 ||

English

Just as, when someone is in pain, they cry out, oh, what suffering, in the same way, crying, oh, fate, is only another way of saying, oh, what suffering.

prāksvakarmetarākāraṃ daivaṃ nāma na vidyate | bālaḥ prabalapuṃseva tajjetumih śakyate || 4 ||

English

There is nothing called fate that has any form other than one's own former action. Here, even a child can conquer it, just as a strong man can.

hyastano duṣṭa ācāra ācāreṇādya cāruṇā | yathāśu śubhatāmeti prāktanaṃ karma tattathā || 5 ||

English

Just as yesterday's bad conduct is quickly made good by today's good conduct, in that same way one's past action too can quickly be made good.

English

Those who do not strive to conquer that past action, because they are caught up in some small greed, are pitiful, common, foolish people who remain devoted to fate.

pauruṣeṇa kṛtaṃ karma daivādyadabhinashyati | tatra nāśayiturjñeyaṃ pauruṣaṃ balavattaram || 7 ||

English

When an action carried out through effort is destroyed by what is called fate, know that in that case a stronger effort was really the destroyer.

yadekavṛntaphalayorathaikaṃ śūnyakoṭaram | tatra prayatnaḥ sphuritastathā tadrāsasaṃvidaḥ || 8 ||

English

Take two fruits growing on a single stalk, one of which turns out hollow inside - there too, effort has been at work, as can be known from the taste of each.

yatprayānti jagadbhāvāḥ saṃsiddhā api saṃkṣayam | kṣayakārakayatnasya hyatra jñeyaṃ mahadbalam || 9 ||

English

That things in the world decay and perish even after becoming fully ripe and complete shows the great power of the effort that causes that decay.

dvau huḍāviva yudhyete puruṣārthau parasparam | ya eva balavāṃstatra sa eva jayati kṣaṇāt || 10 ||

English

Two efforts fight each other like two rams butting heads; whichever of the two is stronger wins in an instant.

bhikṣuko maṅgalebhena nṛpo yatkriyate balāt | tadamātyebhapaurāṇāṃ prayatnasya balaṃ mahat || 11 ||

English

When a beggar is forcibly made a king through the auspicious elephant, that is due to the great power of the effort of the ministers, the elephant-keepers, and the citizens.

pauruṣeṇānnamākramya yathā dantena cūrṇyate | anyaḥ pauruṣamāśritya tathā śūreṇa cūrṇyate || 12 ||

English

Just as food is seized through effort and then ground up by the teeth, in the same way one person relying on effort is crushed by another, a stronger hero.

annabhūtā hi mahatāṃ laghavo yatnaśālinām | yatheṣṭaṃ viniyojyante tena karmasu loṣṭavat || 13 ||

English

The weak become like food for the mighty who are full of effort; by that strength the mighty use the weak in their tasks just as they please, like a mere clod of earth.

śaktasya pauruṣaṃ dṛśyamadṛśyaṃ vāpi yadbhavet | taddaivamityaśaktena buddhamātmanyabuddhinā || 14 ||

English

Whatever effort a capable person makes, whether it can be seen or not, an incapable person who does not really understand it calls that fate.

bhūtānāṃ balavadbhūtaṃ yanna daivamiti sthitam | tatteṣāmapyadhiṣṭhātṛ satāmetatsphuṭaṃ mithaḥ || 15 ||

English

Among all beings, the one that is strongest - one that is recognized as a real force and not as fate - rules over the rest. This is plain and clear to the wise, one to another.

śāstrāmātyebhapaurāṇāmavikalpā svabhāvadhīḥ | yā sā bhikṣukarājyasya kartṛ dhartṛ prajāsthiteḥ || 16 ||

English

The firm, unanimous, natural judgment of the scriptures, the ministers, the elephant-keepers, and the citizens - it is this that turns the beggar into a king and holds the settled order of the subjects together.

bhikṣuko maṅgalebhena nṛpo yatkriyate kvacit | prāktanaṃ pauruṣaṃ tatra balavadvāpi kāraṇam || 17 ||

English

When, on some occasion, a beggar is made king through the auspicious elephant, the cause there could equally be his own past effort, being powerful enough to bring this about.

aihikaḥ prāktanaṃ hanti prāktano'dyatanaṃ balāt | sarvadā puruṣaspandastatrānudvegavāñjayī || 18 ||

English

Present effort can destroy past action, and past action can forcibly overpower the present. It always comes down to the person's own exertion, and in that struggle, whoever stays free of agitation wins.

dvayoradyatanasyaiva pratyakṣādbalitā bhavet | daivaṃ jetuṃ yato yatnairbālo yūneva śakyate || 19 ||

English

Between the two, direct experience shows that the present effort alone is the stronger; so fate can be conquered through effort, just as a child is easily overcome by a grown young man.

meghana nīyate yadvadvatsaropārjitā kṛṣiḥ | meghasya puruṣārtho'sau jayatyadhikayatnavān || 20 ||

English

Just as a whole year's harvest can be swept away by a cloud, that destruction is itself the cloud's own effort; and whoever has the greater effort wins.

krameṇopārjite'pyarthe naṣṭe kāryā na kheditā | na balaṃ yatra me śaktaṃ tatra kā paridevanā || 21 ||

English

Even when something gained little by little is lost, one should not grieve over it. Where my own strength has no power, what use is there in weeping over it?

yanna śaknomi tasyārthe yadi duḥkhaṃ karomyaḥam | tadamāritamṛtyorme yuktaṃ pratyaharodanam || 22 ||

English

If I make myself suffer over something I have no power to change, then by that same logic I should weep every day that I have not yet conquered death.

deśakālakriyādravyavśato visphurantyamī | sarva eva jagadbhāvā jayatyadhikayatnavān || 23 ||

English

All the states of this world appear depending on place, time, action, and material circumstance; and among them, it is the one with greater effort that wins.

tasmātpauruṣamāśritya sacchāstraiḥ satsamāgamaiḥ | prajñāmamalatāṃ nītvā saṃsārajaladhiṃ taret || 24 ||

English

So, relying on one's own effort, through true teachings and the company of good people, one should purify one's understanding and so cross over the ocean of worldly existence.

prāktanaścaehikaścaimau puruṣārthau phaladdrumau | saṃjātau puruṣāraṇye jayatyabhyadhikastayoḥ || 25 ||

English

Past effort and present effort are like two fruit-bearing trees grown in the forest that is a person; and between the two, the greater one wins.

karma yaḥ prāktanaṃ tucchaṃ na nihanti śubhehitaiḥ | ajño janturanīśo'sāvātmanaḥ sukhaduḥkhayoḥ || 26 ||

English

Whoever does not wipe out his trifling past action through good deeds - that ignorant creature has no control over his own happiness and sorrow.

English

Someone driven only by God, going to heaven or to hell, is always dependent on another - exactly like an animal, no doubt about it.

yastūdāracamatkāraḥ sadācāravihāravān | sa niryāti jaganmohānmṛgendraḥ pañjarādiva || 28 ||

English

But the one who has a noble spirit and lives by good conduct escapes from the delusion of the world, like a lion breaking free of its cage.

kaścinmāṃ prerayatyevamityanarthakukalpane | yaḥ sthito'dṛṣṭamutsṛjya tyājyo'sau dūrato'dhamaḥ || 29 ||

English

Whoever turns away from his own hidden effort and holds on to the harmful, foolish belief that someone else is driving him like this should be shunned from far away, as the lowest of men.

vyavahārasahasrāṇi yānyupāyānti yānti ca | yathāśāstraṃ vihartavyaṃ teṣu tyaktvā sukhāsukhe || 30 ||

English

Among the thousands of worldly affairs that keep coming and going, one should act as the scriptures teach, setting aside pleasure and pain.

yathāśāstram anuccchinnāṃ maryādāṃ svāmanujjhataḥ | upatiṣṭhanti sarvāṇi ratnānyambunidhāviva || 31 ||

English

For the one who does not abandon his own unbroken boundary as taught by the scriptures, everything comes to him on its own, just as jewels gather in the ocean.

svārthaprāpakakāryaikaprayatnaparatā budhaiḥ | proktā pauruṣaśabdena sā siddhyai śāstrayantritā || 32 ||

English

Dedicated effort, focused on the one action that secures one's true good - this is what the wise mean by the word effort, and, kept within the bounds of scripture, it leads to success.

kriyayā spandadharmiṇyā svārthasādhakatā svayam | sādhusaṃgamasacchāstratīkṣṇayonnīyate dhiyā || 33 ||

English

Through action that involves real movement and exertion, the ability to achieve one's own good develops on its own - and it grows sharper with the intelligence gained from the company of good people and true teachings.

English

The wise know the highest truth as an endless bliss of perfect evenness. Those good, scripture-knowing people through whom that truth is always to be found - they should be served.

devalokādihāgatya lokadvayahitaṃ bhavet | prāktanaṃ pauruṣaṃ tadvai daivaśabdena kathyate || 35 ||

English

What comes here from the world of the gods and turns out to be good for both this world and the next - that is simply past effort, and that is what people mean by the word fate.

tadyuktametadetasminnāsti nāpavadāmahe | mūḍhaiḥ prakalpitaṃ daivaṃ manyante ye kṣayaṃ gatāḥ || 36 ||

English

That much is fair, and we do not deny it. But fate, in the sense fools imagine it, is something they have invented - only those already ruined believe in it.

nityaṃ svapauruṣādeva lokadvayahitaṃ bhavet | hyastanī duṣkriyābhyeti śobhāṃ satkriyayā yathā || 37 ||

English

Benefit in both worlds always comes from one's own effort alone - just as yesterday's bad deed can be made good through a good deed today.

adyaivaṃ prāktanī tasmādyatnādyaḥ kāryavānbhavet | karāmalakavaddṛṣṭaṃ pauruṣādeva tatphalam | mūḍhaḥ pratyakṣamutsṛjya daivamohe nimajjati || 38 ||

English

In just this way, today's deed becomes tomorrow's past action; so whoever acts with effort gets his work done. That result, coming only from effort, is as plain to see as a fruit held in the palm of the hand. But the fool turns away from what is right in front of his eyes and sinks into the delusion of fate.

sakalakāraṇakāryavivarjitaṃ nijavikalpabalādupakalpitam | tadanapekṣya hi daivamasanmayaṃ śraya śubhāśaya pauruṣamātmanaḥ || 39 ||

English

Fate has no real cause and no real effect; it is only something built up by the force of one's own imagination. So set aside this unreal fate, and instead, good-hearted one, rely on your own effort.
