śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | nākṛtirna ca karmāṇi na spando na parākramaḥ | tanmithyājñānavadrūḍhaṃ daivaṃ nāma kimucyate || 1 ||
Sri Vasishtha said: Fate is not a shape, not an action, not a movement, not a strength. So what is this thing called "fate," fixed in people's minds like a wrong belief that has taken root?
Just as a bad deed done yesterday can turn to good through a good deed, so a deed done before can turn to good today in the same way. So one should make the effort to do good deeds.
If fate alone did everything here, what use would a man's effort be? Then fate alone would have to do the bathing, the giving, the sitting, and the passing of stool!
kiṃvā śāstropadeśena mūko'yaṃ puruṣaḥ kila | saṃcāryate tu daivena kiṃ kasyehopadiśyate || 7 ||
Or what use is the teaching of the scriptures? This man is like someone mute, and is only moved about by fate — so then what is being taught, and to whom, here?
mitho'ṅgāni samāsādya dvayorekaikakartṛtā | hastādīnāṃ hatatve ha na daivena kvacitkṛtam || 10 ||
When two limbs come together and act on each other, each one is its own doer — when the hands and other limbs strike and get hurt, this is never done by fate at all.

Unlike the mind and the intellect, this thing called fate is never actually felt by anyone here. So, down to the cowherd, all who have some understanding know that fate is never real.
If fate is a thing separate from the intellect, then it is something else entirely. And if it is the very same as the intellect, then what difference is there between the two? And if mere imagination is enough proof for you, then why not accept self-effort the same way?
nāmūrtes tena saṅgo'sti nabhaseva vapuṣmataḥ | mūrtaṃ ca dṛśyate lagnaṃ tasmāddaivaṃ na vidyate || 13 ||
A thing without a shape cannot touch a body, just as empty space cannot touch a body. But what we see actually joined to us and acting on us has a shape. So fate does not exist.
If there really were, in the three worlds, some other power that controls every being, then let all beings just lie down and do nothing — fate would do everything for them!
When someone says, "I am driven by fate, so I do this," that is only how it looks from outside. These are only words said to comfort oneself — they are not fate in the true sense.
Fate is a thing made up by fools; those who rely on it come to ruin. But wise people, through the power of their own effort, reach the highest place.
kālavidbhirvinirṇītā yasyāticirajīvitā | sa cejjīvati saṃchinnashirāstaddaivamuttamam || 18 ||
If astrologers who know the movement of time have decided that a man's life will be very long, and he still lives on even with his head cut off — then fate would truly be supreme.
Raghava, if astrologers who know the movement of time have decided that a man will be very learned, and he becomes learned in that subject without ever being taught — then fate would truly be supreme.
The lords of the gods took the rich world back from the demons — even after it was cut apart and torn to pieces — by their own strength, through effort and hard work alone.
bharaṇādānasamrambhavibhramaśramabhūmiṣu | śaktatā dṛśyate rāma na daivasyaauṣadheriva || 25 ||
Rama, in feeding a family, earning, starting new work, moving about, and hard labor, the power that shows itself is the power of effort — the way a medicine shows its power — not the power of fate.
Fate has no real cause and no real effect; it is only something made up under the power of one's own imagination. So, good-hearted one, without relying on this fate, which is completely unreal, hold on to the best thing there is — self-effort.
