śrīvasiṣṭha uvācaviśiṣṭāṃśasamarthatvamupamāneṣu gṛhyateko bhedaḥ sarvasādṛśye tūpamānopameyayoḥ || 1 ||

English

Sri Vasishtha said: In using any comparison, we accept only the strength of one particular point of likeness. For if the thing and what it is compared to were alike in every way, what difference would be left between them at all?

2

दृष्टान्तबुद्धावेकात्मज्ञानशास्त्रार्थवेदनात्महावाक्यार्थसंसिद्धा शान्तिनिर्वाणमुच्यते || २ ||

dṛṣṭāntabuddhāvekātmajñānaśāstrārthavedanātmahāvākyārthasaṃsiddhā śāntinirvāṇamucyate || 2 ||

English

Once, through the understanding built up by examples, one grasps the meaning the scriptures teach about the one single self, and through the meaning of the great sayings a full peace is achieved, that peace is called liberation.

tasmāddṛṣṭāntadārṣṭāntavikalpollasitairalamyayā kayācidyuktyā tu mahāvākyārthamāśrayet || 3 ||

English

So enough of endless arguments back and forth over examples and counter-examples. By whatever reasoning works, one should simply take hold of the meaning of the great sayings.

śāntiḥ śreyaḥ paraṃ viddhi tatprāptau yatnavānbhava | bhoktavyamodanaṃ prāptaṃ kiṃ tatsiddhau vikalpitaiḥ || 4 ||

English

Know that peace is the highest good, and make every effort to reach it. Once the food that is to be eaten is there in front of you, what is the use of arguing over how it got cooked?

akāraṇaiḥ kāraṇibhirbodhārthamupamīyateupamānaistūpameyaiḥ sadṛśairekadeśataḥ || 5 ||

English

For the sake of understanding, things that truly have no cause are compared to things that do have causes. But the thing used for comparison and the thing being compared are alike only in one respect, not in every way.

sthātavyaṃ neha bhogeṣu vivekarahitātmanāupalodarasaṃjātaparipīnāndhabhekavat || 6 ||

English

A person without discrimination should not stay fixed on the pleasures of this world, like a blind, fattened frog living trapped inside a stone.

dṛṣṭāntairyatnamāśritya jetavyaṃ parame padamvicāraṇavatā bhāvyaṃ śāntiśāstrārthaśālinā || 7 ||

English

Using examples, and making real effort, one should win the highest state. One should become someone who truly inquires, who has taken to heart the teaching on peace found in this scripture.

8

शास्त्रोपदेशसौजन्यप्रज्ञातज्ज्ञसमागमैःअन्तरान्तरसंपन्नधर्मार्थोपार्जनक्रियाः || ८ ||

śāstropadeśasaujanyaprajñātajjñasamāgamaiḥantarāntarasaṃpannadharmārthopārjanakriyaḥ || 8 ||

English

Through the teaching of scripture, through kindness, through wisdom, and by meeting those who truly know, and now and then, along the way, by carrying out the tasks of earning a livelihood and doing what is right,

tāvadvicārayetprājño yāvadviśrāntimātmanisaṃprayātyapunarnāśāṃ śāntiṃ turyapadābhidhām || 9 ||

English

the wise man should go on inquiring, for exactly as long as it takes, until he reaches within himself a rest that is a peace which is never again destroyed, the peace called the state of the fourth.

turyaviśrāntiyuktasya pratīpasya bhavārṇavātjīvato'jīvataścaiva gṛhasthasya tathā yateḥ || 10 ||

English

For one who rests firmly in the state of the fourth, who has turned back from the ocean of worldly life, whether he goes on living an ordinary life or gives it up, whether he is a householder or a wandering ascetic,

English

there is nothing to be gained by doing or by not doing, and nothing to be gained from disputes over the Shruti and the Smriti. Like an ocean that Mount Mandara no longer churns, he simply remains as he is.

ekāṃśenopamānānāmupameyasadharmatā boddhavyaṃ bodhyabodhāya na stheyaṃ bodhacañcunā || 12 ||

English

The likeness between the thing being compared and the things used for comparison exists only in one part. What needs to be understood should be understood for the sake of understanding, not by going on pecking at it with the beak of endless argument.

English

By whatever reasoning works, what needs to be understood should simply be understood. But those confused wranglers, forever pecking with the beak of argument, cannot tell right reasoning from wrong.

hṛdaye saṃvidākāśe viśrānte'nubhavātmani vastunyanarthaṃ yaḥ prāha bodhacañcuḥ sa ucyate || 14 ||

English

Whoever speaks against, calling pointless or harmful, the real truth that already rests quietly in the space of awareness within the heart, in the very nature of direct experience, is the one who is called a mere quibbler pecking with the beak of argument.

abhimānavikalpāṃśairajño jñaptiṃ vikalpayet bodhaṃ malinayatyantaḥ svaṃ khamabda ivāmalam || 15 ||

English

Out of fragments of ego and speculation, the ignorant man throws doubt on true knowing. He clouds his own inner understanding, the way a cloud dirties the clear sky.

sarvapramāṇasattānāṃ padamabdhirapāmiva | pramāṇamekameveha pratyakṣaṃ tadataḥ śṛṇu | || 16 ||

English

There is one single foundation for the truth of all other means of knowledge, the way the ocean is the source of all waters. Here, truly, there is only one valid means of knowledge, which is direct perception. Now hear about it.

sarvākṣasāramadhyakṣaṃ vedanaṃ viduruttamāḥnūnaṃ tatpratipatsiddhaṃ tatpratyakṣamudāhṛtam || 17 ||

English

The wisest know that the very essence of all the senses is this direct awareness itself. And it is this awareness, known the moment it is grasped, that is truly called direct perception.

anubhūtervedanasya pratipatteryathābhidham | pratyakṣamiti nāmeha kṛtaṃ jīvaḥ sa eva naḥ | || 18 ||

English

To direct experience, to awareness, to immediate apprehension, under their various names, we have here given a single name, direct perception. That very thing is the individual self, and that individual self is nothing other than ourselves.

sa eva saṃvitsa pumānahantāpratyayātmakaḥ | sa yayodeti saṃvittyā sā padārtha iti smṛtā | || 19 ||

English

That very thing is consciousness, that is the person, whose nature is the sense of I. And whatever appears through that awareness is what we call an object, a thing.

sasaṃkalpavikalpādyaiḥ kṛtanānākramabhramaiḥ | jagattayā sphuratyambu taraṅgāditayā yathā | || 20 ||

English

That same consciousness, through imagination, doubt, and the like, which create a whole series of shifting illusions, shines forth as the world, just as water appears in the form of waves and so on.

prāgakāraṇamevāśu sargādau sargalīlayā | sphuritvā kāraṇaṃ bhūtaṃ pratyakṣaṃ svayamātmani || || 21 ||

English

At first, though it has no cause at all, at the very start of creation, through creation's own play, it quickly shines forth and becomes the cause of everything, directly known, by itself, within the self.

kāraṇaṃ tvavicārothajīvasyāsadapi sthitam | sadivāsyāṃ jagadrūpaṃ prakṛtau vyaktimāgatam || || 22 ||

English

But the cause behind the individual self, a self that has arisen only out of a failure to inquire, does not really exist at all. Yet it stands there as if it did exist, and in this nature it has come into visible form as the world.

svayameva vicārastu svata utthaṃ svakaṃ vapuḥ | nāśayitvā karotyāśu pratyakṣaṃ paramaṃ mahat || || 23 ||

English

But inquiry itself, once it has destroyed its own form, the self that had arisen out of itself, quickly brings about the direct realisation of the supreme, the great reality.

vicāravānvicāro'pi ātmānamavagacchati | yadā tadā nirullekhaṃ paramevāvaśiṣyate || || 24 ||

English

When both the inquirer and his inquiry come to know the self, then only the supreme remains, without any mark or feature left at all.

manasyanīhite śānte svabuddhīndriyakarmabhiḥ | nahi kaścitkṛtairartho nākṛtairapyabhāvanāt || || 25 ||

English

When the mind has become free of craving and calm, the actions of one's own intellect and senses serve no purpose at all, whether they are done or left undone, because there is no longer any such notion left in the mind.

English

When the mind has become free of craving and calm, the organs of action no longer engage in any action at all, like a machine that no one has switched on.

manoyantrasya calane kāraṇaṃ vedanaṃ viduḥ | praṇālīdārumēṣasya rajjurantargatā yathā || 27 ||

English

The wise know that awareness is the hidden cause that moves the machine of the mind, like a rope hidden inside that moves a wooden ram through its channel.

rūpālokamanaskārapadārthavyākulaṃ jagat | vidyate vedanasya antarvātāntaḥ spandanaṃ yathā || 28 ||

English

The world, crowded with forms, light, thoughts, and objects, exists within awareness itself, the way a throbbing movement exists within a gust of wind.

sarvātmavedanaṃ śuddhaṃ yathodeti tadātmakam | bhāti prasṛtadikkālabāhyāntārūpadehakam || 29 ||

English

As the pure awareness that is the very self of everything arises, it shines forth in that same nature, spreading through space and time, taking the shape of bodies both outside and within.

dṛṣṭvaiva dṛśyatābhāsaṃ svarūpaṃ dhārayansthitaḥ | svaṃ yathā yatra yadrūpaṃ pratibhāti tathaiva tat || 30 ||

English

Even while it shows itself as something seen, it still holds on to its own true nature, unchanged. Wherever it appears, and in whatever form, it becomes exactly that form.

sa sarvātmā yathā yatra samullāsamupāgataḥtiṣṭhatyāśu tathā tatra tadrūpa iva rājate || 31 ||

English

That self of all, wherever and however it bursts forth into appearance, immediately stands there in just that way, and shines as if it had become that very form.

sarvātmakatayā draṣṭurdṛśyatvamiva yujyatedṛśyatvaṃ draṣṭṛsadbhāve dṛśyatāpi na vāstavī || 32 ||

English

Because it is the very self of everything, it seems as though the seer itself becomes something seen. But this state of being seen exists only where there is a seer, and even this being seen is not truly real.

akāraṇakamevāto brahma siddhamidaṃ sthitampratyakṣameva nirmātṛ tasyāṃśāstvanumādayaḥ || 33 ||

English

So this Brahman stands firmly established, without any cause at all. Direct perception alone truly proves it. Inference and the other means of knowledge are only smaller parts within that.

svayatnamātre yadupāsako yastaddaivaśabdārthamapāsya dūreśūreṇa sādho padamuttamaṃ tat svapauruṣeṇaiva hi labhyate'ntaḥ || 34 ||

English

Whoever relies only on his own effort, and throws far away any idea of fate or divine will, for such a brave man, good friend, that highest state is reached only through his own effort, from within himself.

vicārayācāryaparamparāṇāṃ matena satyena sitena tāvatyāvadviśuddhaṃ svayameva buddhayā hyanantarūpaṃ paramabhyupaiṣi || 35 ||

English

Inquire, using the true and pure teaching handed down through the line of teachers, for as long as it takes, until you yourself, through your own understanding, come to reach that pure, endless, supreme reality.
