Book 2 of the Yoga Vasishtha, chapter 18 — 68 verses in Sanskrit, Devanagari and IAST, with a plain English and Hindi translation of every verse.
The English and Hindi are machine translations, not yet reviewed by a scholar. How they are madeये कैसे बने
Even a book written by an ordinary man should be accepted if it teaches through good reasoning. But another book, even one said to come from a great sage, should be rejected if it does not. This is how a person who follows only what is right and just should act.
A statement backed by good reasoning should be accepted even if it comes from a child. But a statement without such reasoning should be thrown away like straw, even if it was spoken by Brahma, the lotus-born.
Someone who drinks water from a well only because it is his father's well, while turning away from the Ganges water flowing right there in front of him in the town — who would not call such a man foolishly attached?
When someone has heard the teaching from a wise man's mouth, has understood its meaning for himself, and when, little by little, through steady thought, that understanding settles firmly into his mind,
Knowing what has gone before and what will follow, that man becomes wise in everything, like a man with sharp eyes holding a lamp at night, who sees every object clearly.
Faults such as greed and delusion grow thin and fade away completely, little by little, from every direction of the mind, like morning mist thinning away as autumn draws near.
The mind becomes clear and calm, like a great lake in autumn. It settles into perfect stillness, like the ocean when Mount Mandara is no longer churning it.
nirastakālimāratnaśikhevāstamatamaḥpaṭā | prati jvalatyalaṃ prajñā padārthapravibhāginī || 13 ||
Wisdom, which tells one thing clearly apart from another, blazes up in full, like the flame of a gem with all its blackness cast off and the veil of darkness gone.
Looks weighed down with misery and poverty, even when their harm is plain to see, no longer wound him in his vital points, like arrows striking a man in armor.
Doubts such as 'how could birth and action, fate and human effort, ever have had a beginning' — this whole heap of doubts settles down, just as darkness fades away when day comes.
That freedom while still alive, once it has slowly ripened fully in him and every last disturbance in him has calmed down, goes beyond what words can reach.
His mind, unmoved by every object and pure, devoted only to the highest light, comes to shine with a supreme brightness, like the moonlight of autumn.
Once the clear sun of understanding has risen in the sky of the heart, giving the light of peace, the comets that bring whole troops of misfortune no longer rise there.
His faculties grow calm, become pure and gentle, and remain high and steady, no longer craving restless waters, like rows of clouds in autumn.
Coarse, cruel vulgarity, which causes all kinds of trouble, turns away and departs, like the games of ghosts, their faces gone pale and wretched, when day arrives.
The mind that clings firmly to the wall of right conduct, and carries the weight of steadiness, is not shaken by mental troubles, just as wind cannot shake a creeper painted on a wall.
The man who understands does not fall into the pit that is attachment to the things of the senses. Who, after all, having once known the right path, would go running toward a ditch?
In whatever action comes his way, so long as it does not go against good scripture and the conduct of good people, his mind takes its pleasure, like a virtuous woman who is content within the courtyard of her own home.
Among the countless millions of worlds, however many atoms there are, the man whose mind is free of attachment sees, one by one, the whole creation contained within each single atom.
na dveṣṭi saṃpravṛttāni na nivṛttāni kāṅkṣati | kāryāṇyeṣa prabuddho'pi niṣprabuddha iva drumaḥ || 30 ||
He does not hate the tasks that come to him, nor does he long for the ones that have stopped or never came. Though he is fully awake, this man stands like a tree that is not even aware of anything.
He appears to others just like any ordinary person, going along with whatever happens to come his way. But when a wanted or an unwanted result comes to him, his heart is never defeated.
Understand this whole teaching, read it, and think it over well. This truth can only be reached by direct experience — it is not like a boon or a curse, which takes effect the moment it is spoken.
This teaching is easy to understand, and it is dressed up with fine ornaments of speech. It is a beautiful poem, full of feeling, and it makes its point through examples.
budhyate svayamevedaṃ kiñcitpadapadārthavit | svayaṃ yastu na vettīdaṃ śrotavyaṃ tena paṇḍitāt || 34 ||
Anyone who already knows a little about words and their meanings can understand this by himself. But whoever cannot understand it on his own should hear it explained by a learned person.
Once this has been heard, thought over, and truly known, then things like penance, meditation, and chanting are of no further use to a man in reaching freedom.
etacchāstraghanābhyāsātpauṇaḥpunyena vīkṣaṇāt pāṇḍityaṃ syādapūrvaṃ hi cittasaṃskārapūrvakam || 36 ||
From thorough practice of this teaching, and from looking at it again and again, a new kind of learning is born, one that comes only after the mind itself has been refined.
The full-grown ghost that is 'I' and 'the world,' the ghost of seer and seen, quiets down all by itself, without any effort, just as a ghost vanishes the moment the sun rises.
bhraṃmo jagadahaṃ ceti sthita evopaśāmyati svapnamohaḥ parijñāta iva no bhramayaty alam || 38 ||
The illusion of 'the world' and 'I,' even while it goes on appearing, simply quiets down by itself, just as the confusion of a dream, once we have fully recognized it as a dream, no longer confuses us at all.
Just as a man is no longer troubled by joy or sorrow over a city he has only imagined in his mind, once he knows it is only imagined, in the same way, once this illusion called the world is fully recognized for what it is, it no longer troubles him.
citrasarpaḥ parijñāto na sarpabhayado yathā dṛśyasarpaḥ parijñātastathā na sukhaduḥkhadaḥ || 40 ||
Just as a painted snake, once you know it is only a painting, does not frighten you the way a real snake would, in the same way this visible world, once we know it truly for what it is, no longer gives us pleasure or pain.
Through recognizing it fully, the snake-quality of the painted snake is destroyed. In just the same way, this cycle of the world, even while it goes on appearing, simply comes to rest.
sumanaḥpallavāmardē kiṃcidvyatikaro bhavēt | paramārthapadaprāptau natu vyatikarō'lpakaḥ || 42 ||
In crushing a soft flower-bud, there may still be some small disturbance. But in reaching the state of highest truth, there is not even that much disturbance.
When you crush a flower petal, some part of the hand has to move. But here, reaching the truth needs only the stilling of the mind — no part of the body needs to move at all.
sukhāsanōpaviṣṭēna yathāsaṃbhavamaśnatā | bhōgajālaṃ sadācāraviruddhēṣu na tiṣṭhatā || 44 ||
Sitting in a comfortable posture, eating whatever happens to be available, enjoying only the pleasures that come on their own, and never doing anything against good conduct,
at whatever moment and in whatever place he can, let him happily reflect on this teaching, keeping the company of good people whenever it is possible, on this scripture, or on another one like it.
Even after all this has been taught, there are sinners who remain unafraid, still stuck in the taste for pleasure, like worms living in their own mother's dung. Such base men are not even worth naming.
Listen now to this brief introduction: to how this teaching should be heard, how its meaning is to be examined, and in what manner of words it is explained.
When something not yet experienced is explained through something already seen and known, and this helps bring about understanding, the wise call that an example.
Rama, without an example, something new and unfamiliar cannot be understood, just as, without a lamp at night, one cannot find and arrange the things kept in the house.
By these various examples, Kakutstha, you are being made to understand by me here. All of them, though they belong to the world of cause and effect, are used to point toward the truth that has no cause.
The relation of cause and effect that is spoken of between a thing and what it is compared to holds true for everything, everything, that is, except the supreme Brahman.
Whatever example is given to you here in teaching about Brahman, in that example only a likeness in one point should be taken as meant, and nothing more.
yo yo nāmeha dṛṣṭānto brahmatattvāvabodhane | dīyate sa sa boddhavyaḥ svapnajāto jagadgataḥ || 55 ||
Whatever example is given here to make you understand the truth of Brahman, that very example should itself be understood as something born of a dream, something that belongs to this world of appearances.
Since this is so, foolish and merely argumentative objections such as how can there be an example with form for a Brahman that has no form, simply do not arise.
anyāsiddhaviruddhādirdṛgdr̥ṣṭāntapradūṣaṇaiḥ | svapnopamatvājjagataḥ samudeti na kiṃcana || 57 ||
Since the world is like a dream, no objection at all, of the kind that calls an example unproved, self-contradictory, and so on, can really apply to it.
Not real before, not real after, and not real even when examined right in the present — waking and dreaming are exactly alike in this. This is a settled truth, known even to a child.
Examples drawn from a dream, an imagination, a deep meditation, a boon, a curse, a drug, and the like, are exactly fitting here, because the very existence of this world is of that same nature.
Whatever other books this same author has written on the means to liberation, in those too, this is the one and only method used for making what needs to be understood, understood.
The dream-like nature of the world becomes clear once this teaching is heard. But it cannot be told all at once, because speech, after all, has to move one step at a time.
svapnasaṃkalpanādhyānanagarādyupamaṃ jagatyatasta eva dṛṣṭāntāstasmātsantīha netare || 62 ||
The world is like a dream, like something imagined, like a deep meditation, like a city built only in the mind. So these are the right examples for it, and no other kind of example fits here.
akāraṇe kāraṇatā yadbodhāyopamīyate na tatra sarvasādharmyaṃ saṃbhavatyupamāśramaiḥ || 63 ||
When, just to help understanding, we speak of a cause for something that really has no cause at all, a full likeness in every respect is simply not possible there, however hard one tries to make the comparison fit.
A wise person who has no wish to argue should accept only a likeness in one point between the thing and what it is compared to, and accept just that much, for the sake of understanding.
arthāvalokane dīpādābhāmātrādṛte ki la na sthānatailavartyādi kiṃcidavyupayujyate || 65 ||
To see an object by lamplight, nothing else matters except the light itself that comes from the lamp. The stand, the oil, the wick, and everything else about the lamp are, by themselves, of no use for the seeing.
Dear one, because it is fit for the purpose only in one respect, the thing used for comparison brings about understanding of the thing compared, just as a lamp makes an object known only through the light it throws on it.
Once understanding of the point has arisen through just one part of the example, the settled meaning of the great sayings of the scriptures should then be grasped and held on to.
na kutārkikatāmetya nāśanīyā prabuddhatā| anubhūtyapalāpāntairapavitrairvikalpitaiḥ || 68 ||
One should not fall into bad, quibbling argument and destroy one's own awakened understanding through impure speculations that end up denying one's own direct experience.
Through careful inquiry, we accept even the words of an enemy, if they bring about true understanding. In the same way, even words spoken by a woman, dealing with the highest truth though they are not themselves from the Veda, are to be accepted. But speech that is nothing but babble is not real teaching at all, whatever its source.
We hold this view, dear one: through this understanding, all the scriptures are brought to speak as one voice. For apart from one's own direct experience, self-sustained, not dependent on any book, and giving the truly felt meaning, is there any other proof at all?
