śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | evamantarviveko yaḥ sa mahāniha rāghava | yogyo jñānagiraḥ śrotuṃ rājeva nayabhāratīm || 1 ||

English

Vasishtha said: O Raghu's descendant, a person who has this kind of inner clarity is truly great, and is fit to hear words of true knowledge - just as a king is fit to hear words of good policy.

avadāto'vadātasya vicārasya mahāśayaḥ | jaḍasaṅgojjhito yogyaḥ śaradindoryathā nabhaḥ || 2 ||

English

A noble-minded person who is pure and free from any tie to dull, lifeless things is fit for pure inquiry - the way a clear sky is fit for the autumn moon to shine in.

tvametayā khaṇḍitayā guṇalakṣmyā samāśritaḥ | manomohaharaṃ vākyaṃ vakṣyamāṇamidaṃ śṛṇu || 3 ||

English

You now have this wealth of good qualities I have just described. Now listen to these words I am about to speak, which will remove the confusion in your mind.

puṇyakalpadrumo yasya phalabhārānataḥ sthitaḥ | muktaye jāyate jantostasyedam śrotumudyamaḥ || 4 ||

English

Only someone whose tree of good deeds is so full of fruit that it bends under its own weight will make the effort to listen to this teaching, and for him it will lead to freedom.

pāvanānāmudārāṇāṃ parabodhaikadāyinām | vacasāṃ bhājanaṃ bhūtyai bhavyo bhavati nādhamaḥ || 5 ||

English

Only a worthy person - not a lowly one - can become the right vessel for these pure, generous words that give nothing but the highest wisdom, and gain true good from them.

mokṣopāyābhidhāneyaṃ saṃhitā sārasaṃmitā | triṃśaddve ca sahasrāṇi jñātā nirvāṇadāyinī || 6 ||

English

This text, called The Means to Liberation, is thirty-two thousand verses long, full of pure essence, and when it is truly known, it gives liberation.

dīpe yathā vinidrasya jvalite saṃpravartate | āloko'nicchato'pyevaṃ nirvāṇamanayā bhavet || 7 ||

English

When a lamp is lit, its light reaches a person who is awake even if he does not ask for it. In the same way, this text brings liberation, even to someone who is not seeking it.

svayaṃ jñātā śrutā vāpi bhrāntiśāntyaikasaukhydā | āprekṣya varṇitā sadyo yathā svargataraṅgiṇī || 8 ||

English

Whether you come to know this text yourself or just hear it, it gives one kind of happiness - the end of confusion. Even just to look at it and describe it brings instant good, the way even a glimpse of the heavenly Ganga does.

yathā rajjvāmahibhrāntirvinaśyatyavalokanāt | tathaitatprekṣaṇācchāntimeti saṃsāraduḥkhitā || 9 ||

English

Just as the mistaken sight of a snake in a rope disappears when you look closely, so too, by looking closely into this text, a person suffering from this world's pain finds peace.

yuktiyuktārthavākyāni kalpitāni pṛthakpṛthak | dṛṣṭāntasārasūktāni cāsyāṃ prakaraṇāni ṣaṭ || 10 ||

English

In this text there are six sections, each made of separate statements whose meaning fits sound reasoning, and each full of the best examples and sayings.

vairāgyākhyam prakaraṇaṃ prathamaṃ parikīrtitam | virāgo vardhate yena sekeneva marau taruḥ || 11 ||

English

The first section is called Dispassion. Reading it makes dispassion grow, the way watering makes a tree grow even in a desert.

anubandhena sahitam diṣṭatattvanirūpaṇam | sārdhaṃ sahasraṃ granthasya yasminhṛdi vicārite | prakāśācchuddhatodeti maṇāviva sumārjite || 12 ||

English

This section, which sets out the truth being taught along with how it connects to the rest, is one thousand five hundred verses long. When you turn it over in your heart, its light brings out a clear purity in you, the way light brings out the shine in a well-polished gem.

mumukṣuvyavahārākhyam tataḥ prakaraṇaṃ kṛtam | sahasramātraṃ granthasya yuktigranthana sundaram || 13 ||

English

After that comes the section called The Seeker of Liberation. It is exactly a thousand verses, made beautiful by its careful reasoning.

svabhāvo hi mumukṣūṇāṃ narāṇāṃ yatra varṇyate | athotpattiprakaraṇaṃ dṛṣṭāntākhyāyikāmayam || 14 ||

English

In this section, the true nature of people who seek liberation is described. After that comes the section called Creation, made up entirely of illustrative stories.

saptagranthasahasrāṇi vijñānapratipādakam | jāgatī draṣṭṛdṛśyaśrīrahaṃtvamitirūpiṇī || 15 ||

English

This section is seven thousand verses long and teaches true knowledge. It describes the waking world, rich with seer and seen, taking the shape of this sense of I.

anutpannaivaottitheva yatreti parivarṇyate | yasminśrute jagadidaṃ śrotāntarbudhyate'khilam || 16 ||

English

This section fully explains how the world, though it was never really created, appears as if it had arisen. When a person hears this, he comes to understand this entire world within his own mind.

sāsmadyuṣmatsavistāraṃ salokākāśaparvatam | piṇḍagrahavinirmuktaṃ nirbhittikamaparvatam || 17 ||

English

That world includes the whole spread of I and you, worlds, sky, and mountains - yet it cannot be grasped as a solid thing. It has no real walls, and no real mountains, even though it seems to.

pṛthvyādibhūtarahitaṃ saṃkalpa iva pattanaṃ | svapnopalambhabhāvābhaṃ manorājyavadātatam || 18 ||

English

It has none of the real elements - earth and the rest. It is like a city built only in the imagination. It looks the way things look in a dream, and it stretches out like a kingdom built only in the mind.

gandharvanagaraprakhyamarthaśūnyopalambhanāt | dvicandravibhramābhāsaṃ mṛgatṛṣṇāmbuvartanam || 19 ||

English

It is like a city in the sky - because when you look for anything real in it, you find nothing there. It appears the way a double moon appears to confused eyes, and it behaves like the water in a mirage.

nauyānalolśailābhaṃ satyalābhvavivarjitam | cittabhramapiśācābhaṃ nirbījamapi bhāsuram || 20 ||

English

It looks the way a mountain seems to move when seen from a moving boat, but there is nothing real to gain from it. It appears like a ghost that comes from a confused mind - it shines out even though it has no real root.

kathārthapratibhāsābhaṃ vyomamuktāvalīnibham | kaṭakatvaṃ yathā hemni taraṅgatvaṃ yathāmbhasi || 21 ||

English

It appears the way a scene feels real while a story is being told, or the way a string of pearls seems to hang in an empty sky. It is world only the way a bangle is bangle in gold, or a wave is wave in water.

yathā nabhasi nīlatvamasadevotthitaṃ sadā | abhittiraṅgarahitamupalabdhimanoharam || 22 ||

English

The world is like the blueness of the sky - something unreal that always seems to appear. It is like a beautiful painting with no wall to hold it, yet it is still lovely to look at.

svapne vā vyomni vā citramakartr̥ cirabhāsuram | avahnireva vahnitvaṃ dhatte citrānalo yathā || 23 ||

English

It is like a picture in a dream or a picture in the sky - a picture with no real painter, yet it keeps on shining. Or it is like a painted fire, which is not fire at all, yet still looks like fire.

dadhātyevaṃ jagacchabdarūpārthamasadātmakam | taraṅgotpalamālābhaṃ dṛṣṭanṛtyamivotthitam || 24 ||

English

In this same way, the thing called the world, with all its shapes, is unreal at its core. It looks like a garland of lotuses made of waves, or like a dance that rises up before your eyes and is seen.

cakracītkārapūrṇasya jalarāśimivodyatam | śīrṇapatraṃ bhraṣṭanaṣṭaṃ grīṣme vanamivārasam || 25 ||

English

It is like the water thrown up by a creaking water-wheel, or like a forest in summer, dried out, its leaves withered, fallen, and gone.

maraṇavyagracittābhaṃ śilāgṛhaguhaspadam | andhakāraguhaikainṛttamunmattaceṣṭitam || 26 ||

English

It looks like a mind thrown into panic by the fear of death. It settles itself in rock, house, and cave, and dances alone, again and again, in a dark cave, like a madman's twitching.

praśāntājñānanīhāraṃ vijñānaśaradambaram | samutkīrṇamiva stambhe citraṃ bhittāvivoditam || 27 ||

English

But once the fog of ignorance about it settles down, it turns clear, like an autumn sky lit up with true knowledge. Until then, it stands out like a figure carved on a pillar, or a picture that has appeared on a wall.

paṅkādivābhiracitaṃ sacetanamacetanam | tataḥ sthitiprakaraṇaṃ caturthaṃ parikalpitam || 28 ||

English

Both living, conscious beings and lifeless things in this world seem molded out of mud, as it were. After this description, the fourth section, called Continued Existence, is presented.

trīṇi granthasahasrāṇi vyākhyānākhyāyikāmayam | itthaṃ jagadahaṃbhāvarūpastithimupāgatam || 29 ||

English

This section is three thousand verses long, made up of explanations and stories. It shows how the world, built from the sense of I, comes to settle into its continued existence.

draṣṭṛdṛśyakramaṃ prauḍhamityatra parikīrtitam | daśadiṅmaṇḍalābhogabhāsuro'yaṃ jagadbhramaḥ || 30 ||

English

Here it is fully explained how the seer and the seen come into being step by step. This illusion called the world shines out and spreads across all directions.

itthamabhyāgato vṛddhimiti tatrocyate ciram | upaśāntiprakaraṇaṃ tataḥ pañcasahasrakam || 31 ||

English

It is explained there at length how this illusion of the world grows in this way. After that comes the fifth section, called Peace, made up of five thousand verses.

pañcamaṃ pāvanaṃ proktaṃ yuktisaṃtatisundaram | idaṃ jagadahaṃ tvaṃ ca sa iti bhrāntirutthitā || 32 ||

English

This fifth section is called purifying, made beautiful by an unbroken chain of reasoning. It shows how the confusion arose that says: this is the world, this is me, this is you, this is him.

itthaṃ saṃśāmyatītyasminkathyate ślokasaṃgrahaiḥ | upaśāntiprakaraṇe śrute śāmyati saṃsṛtiḥ || 33 ||

English

How this confusion is calmed is told here through a whole collection of verses. When a person hears this section on Peace, the whole cycle of worldly life grows calm.

prabhraṣṭacitraseneva kiṃcillabhyopalambhanā | śatāṃśaśiṣṭā bhavati saṃśāntabhrāntarūpiṇī || 34 ||

English

It becomes like a painted army that has scattered and fallen apart - only a faint trace of it can still be seen, a mere hundredth part remains, and even that is a confusion now put to rest.

anyasaṃkalpacittasthā nagaraśrīrivāsatī | alabhyavastupārśvasthasvapnayuddhacirāravā || 35 ||

English

It exists only the way an imagined city's grandeur exists in a mind busy with some other thought - not really there at all. It is like the long, drawn-out battle cries of a fight that only happens in a dream, next to something that was never really there to win.

śāntasaṃkalpamattābhrabhīṣaṇāśaniśabdavat | vismṛtasvapnasaṃkalpanirmāṇanagaropamā || 36 ||

English

Once the thought behind it quiets down, it is like the frightening roar of thunder from a wild storm cloud that has now gone silent. It is like a city that was built by the imagination inside a dream - a dream that has now been forgotten.

bhaviṣyannagarodyānaprasūvandhyāmalāṅgikā | tasyā jihvocyamānograkathārthānubhavopamā || 37 ||

English

It is like the flower of a garden in a city that will exist only in the future - like a woman who cannot bear a child, yet has a flawless body. To hear it told aloud is like living through the events of a frightening story.

anullikhita citrasya citravyāpteva bhittibhūḥ | parivismaryamāṇārthakalpanānagarīnibhā || 38 ||

English

It is like a wall that seems covered with a picture, even though no picture has been drawn on it. It is like an imagined city whose very meaning is slowly being forgotten.

English

It is like a place that has all the seasons in it, yet the forest has not yet begun to stir - its shape still unclear. It is tinted with the flavor of a spring that has not yet come, shaped like a forest of flowers that have not yet bloomed.

It becomes like a calm, gentle river whose waves have all settled and dissolved within it. After this, the sixth section, called Liberation, is given.

śiṣṭo granthaḥ parīmāṇaṃ tasya jñānamahārthadaḥ| buddhe tasminbhavecchreyo nirvāṇaṃ śāntakalpanam || 41 ||

English

The size of this Liberation section is whatever text is left over, and it gives the great wealth of knowledge. When that wisdom is grasped, the highest good comes about: liberation, the total quieting of the mind's imaginings.

English

He cannot be grasped by thought; his very self is the shining light of pure awareness. He is pure knowing, free of all affliction, as clear as the vast open sky, and in him every illusion about this world of becoming has gone quiet.

nirvāpitajagadyātraḥ kṛtakartavyasusthitaḥ| samastajanatārambhavajrastambho nabhonibhaḥ || 43 ||

English

His journey through the world's business has come to rest; he is calm and settled, with nothing left to do. He stands like a pillar of diamond, unmoved amid all the busy activity of people, and he is like the open sky.

English

He has swallowed up the whole net of the world completely, and is fully satisfied. His mind, which once saw many forms, has itself become like empty open space.

45

English

He has given up all sense of cause, effect, and doing something, and all sense of what to take and what to reject. Though he has a body, he is as if he had none. Though he lives in this world, he is not caught in it.

He is made entirely of pure consciousness, solid and firm like the dense core of a rock. He is like a sun of pure awareness, warming all the worlds and burning away every mass of darkness.

paraprakāśarūpo'pi paramāndhyamivāgataḥ | ruddhasaṃsṛtidurlīlaḥ prakṣīṇāśāviṣūcikaḥ || 47 ||

English

Even though his very form is the highest light, he has become as if completely blind to the world. The painful game of this world's cycle has stopped for him, and the disease of craving, which spreads like cholera, has been completely wiped out in him.

naṣṭāhaṃkāravetālo dehavānakalevaraḥ | kasmiṃścidromakoṭyagre tasyeyamavatiṣṭhate | jagallakṣmīrmahāmeroḥ puṣpe kvacidivālinī || 48 ||

English

The demon of ego is dead in him. He has a body, yet is as if bodiless. For him, the whole glory of this world rests on the tip of just one of the countless hairs on his body - the way a single bee might rest on one flower somewhere on the great Mount Meru.

English

In every single atom, the space of pure consciousness, within its own tiny hollow, creates thousands of whole worlds and then watches them.

vitatatā hṛdayasya mahāmaterhariharāñjajalakṣaśatairapi | tulanameti na muktimato yataḥ pravitatāsti niruttamavastunaḥ || 50 ||

English

The vastness of the heart of this great, liberated soul cannot be compared even to hundreds of thousands of gods like Vishnu, Shiva, and Brahma put together - because it has spread out to become the one reality beyond which nothing greater exists.
