Mumukṣu, Chapter 16मुमुक्षु प्रकरण · सर्ग १६

श्रीवसिष्ठ उवाच । विशेषेण महाबुद्धे संसारोत्तरणे नृणाम् । सर्वत्रोपकरोतीह साधुः साधुसमागमः ॥ १ ॥

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | viśeṣeṇa mahābuddhe saṃsārottaraṇe nṛṇām | sarvatropakarotīha sādhuḥ sādhusamāgamaḥ || 1 ||

Vasishtha said: O great-minded one, meeting good people helps a person in every way in this life, and it helps most of all in crossing over this world.

वशिष्ठ जी ने कहा: हे बड़ी बुद्धि वाले, अच्छे लोगों से मिलना हर तरह से फायदा देता है, और सबसे ज्यादा फायदा यह इस संसार से पार जाने में देता है।

साधुसङ्गतरोर्जातं विवेककुसुमं सितम् । रक्षन्ति ये महात्मानो भाजनं ते फलश्रियः ॥ २ ॥

sādhusaṅgatarorjātaṃ vivekakusumaṃ sitam | rakṣanti ye mahātmāno bhājanaṃ te phalaśriyaḥ || 2 ||

The white flower of clear understanding grows on the tree of good company. The great souls who protect this flower are the ones who get to enjoy its rich fruit.

अच्छे लोगों की संगत रूपी पेड़ पर साफ समझ का सफेद फूल खिलता है। जो महान लोग इस फूल की रक्षा करते हैं, वही इसके भरपूर फल का सुख पाते हैं।

शून्यमाकीर्णतामेति मृतिरप्युत्सवायते । आपत्संपदिवाभाति विद्वज्जनसमागमे ॥ ३ ॥

śūnyamākīrṇatāmeti mṛtirapyutsavāyate | āpatsaṃpadivābhāti vidvajjanasamāgame || 3 ||

In the company of wise people, an empty place feels full, even death feels like a festival, and misfortune looks like good fortune.

बुद्धिमान लोगों के साथ रहने पर सूनी जगह भी भरी हुई लगती है, मौत भी त्योहार जैसी लगती है, और मुसीबत भी अच्छे भाग्य जैसी दिखती है।

हिममापत्सरोजिन्या मोहनीहारमारुतः । जयत्येको जगत्यस्मिन्साधुः साधुसमागमः ॥ ४ ॥

himamāpatsarojinyā mohanīhāramārutaḥ | jayatyeko jagatyasmin sādhuḥ sādhusamāgamaḥ || 4 ||

In this world, the company of good people wins over everything, alone - it is like frost falling on a pond full of lotuses of misfortune, and it is the wind that blows away the fog of delusion.

इस दुनिया में अच्छे लोगों की संगत अकेले ही सबसे ऊपर है - यह मुसीबत रूपी कमल-तालाब पर पड़ी पाला है, और भ्रम रूपी कोहरे को उड़ाने वाली हवा है।

परं विवर्धनं बुद्धेरज्ञानतरुशातनम् । समुत्सारणमाधीनां विद्धि साधुसमागमम् ॥ ५ ॥

paraṃ vivardhanaṃ buddherajñānataruśātanam | samutsāraṇamādhīnāṃ viddhi sādhusamāgamam || 5 ||

Know this: meeting good people is the best way to grow your understanding, to cut down the tree of ignorance, and to drive away all mental pain.

यह जान लो: अच्छे लोगों से मिलना ही समझ को सबसे ज्यादा बढ़ाने का तरीका है, अज्ञान के पेड़ को काटने का तरीका है, और मन की सारी पीड़ा को दूर भगाने का तरीका है।

विवेकः परमो दीपो जायते साधुसंगमात् । मनोहरोज्ज्वलो नूनमासेकादिव गुच्छकः ॥ ६ ॥

vivekaḥ paramo dīpo jāyate sādhusaṅgamāt | manoharojjvalo nūnamāsekādiva gucchakaḥ || 6 ||

From the company of good people, the finest lamp - clear understanding - is lit, beautiful and bright, the way a bunch of flowers blooms bright when it is watered.

अच्छे लोगों की संगत से सबसे बढ़िया दीया जलता है - साफ समझ का दीया - जो सुंदर और चमकीला होता है, ठीक वैसे ही जैसे पानी देने से फूलों का गुच्छा खिलकर चमक उठता है।

निरपायां निराबाधां निर्वृतिं नित्यपीवरीम् । अनुत्तमां प्रयच्छन्ति साधुसङ्गविभूतयः ॥ ७ ॥

nirapāyāṃ nirābādhāṃ nirvṛtiṃ nityapīvarīm | anuttamāṃ prayacchanti sādhusaṅgavibhūtayaḥ || 7 ||

The riches that come from the company of good people give a peace that cannot be harmed, that meets no trouble, that stays full forever, and that has no equal.

अच्छे लोगों की संगत से मिलने वाला धन ऐसी शांति देता है जिसे कोई नुकसान नहीं पहुंचा सकता, जिसमें कोई रुकावट नहीं आती, जो हमेशा भरपूर रहती है, और जिसके बराबर कुछ और नहीं है।

अपि कष्टतरां प्राप्तैर्दशां विवशतां गतैः । मनागपि न संत्याज्या मानवैः साधुसंगतिः ॥ ८ ॥

api kaṣṭatarāṃ prāptairdaśāṃ vivashatāṃ gataiḥ | manāgapi na saṃtyājyā mānavaiḥ sādhusaṅgatiḥ || 8 ||

Even a person who has fallen into the most painful state and become completely helpless should not give up the company of good people, not even a little.

चाहे कोई इंसान सबसे ज्यादा दुखद हालत में क्यों न पहुंच जाए और पूरी तरह लाचार क्यों न हो जाए, फिर भी उसे अच्छे लोगों की संगत जरा भी नहीं छोड़नी चाहिए।

साधुसंगतयो लोके सन्मार्गस्य च दीपिकाः । हार्दान्धकारहारिण्यो भासो ज्ञानविवस्वतः ॥ ९ ॥

sādhusaṅgatayo loke sanmārgasya ca dīpikāḥ | hārdāndhakārahāriṇyo bhāso jñānavivasvataḥ || 9 ||

In this world, meetings with good people are lamps that light up the right path. They clear away the darkness inside the heart - they are rays of the sun of true knowledge.

इस दुनिया में अच्छे लोगों से मिलना सही रास्ते को रोशन करने वाला दीया है। यह दिल के अंदर के अंधेरे को दूर करता है - यह सच्चे ज्ञान के सूरज की किरणें हैं।

यः स्नातः शीतसितया साधुसंगतिगङ्गया । किं तस्य दानैः किं तीर्थैः किं तपोभिः किमध्वरैः ॥ १० ॥

yaḥ snātaḥ śītasitayā sādhusaṅgatigaṅgayā | kiṃ tasya dānaiḥ kiṃ tīrthaiḥ kiṃ tapobhiḥ kimadhvaraiḥ || 10 ||

A person who has bathed in the cool, pure Ganga of good company - what more does he need from giving gifts, visiting holy places, doing penance, or performing sacrifices?

जो इंसान अच्छे लोगों की संगत रूपी ठंडी और साफ गंगा में नहा चुका है, उसे दान देने से क्या मिलेगा, तीर्थ जाने से क्या मिलेगा, तप करने से क्या मिलेगा, या यज्ञ करने से क्या मिलेगा?

नीरागाश्छिन्नसंदेहा गलितग्रन्थयोऽनघ । साधवो यदि विद्यन्ते किं तपस्तीर्थसंग्रहैः ॥ ११ ॥

nīrāgāśchinnasaṃdehā galitagranthayo'nagha | sādhavo yadi vidyante kiṃ tapastīrthasaṃgrahaiḥ || 11 ||

O sinless one, if you can find good people - free from craving, all their doubts cut away, the knots of their heart untied - then what use is doing penance or gathering merit at holy places?

हे निष्पाप, अगर तुम्हें ऐसे अच्छे लोग मिल जाएं जो लालच से मुक्त हों, जिनके सारे शक मिट चुके हों, और जिनके दिल की गांठें खुल चुकी हों, तो फिर तप करने या तीर्थों में पुण्य जमा करने का क्या फायदा?

विश्रान्तमनसो धन्याः प्रयत्नेन परेण हि । दरिद्रेणेव मणयः प्रेक्षणीया हि साधवः ॥ १२ ॥

viśrāntamanaso dhanyāḥ prayatnena pareṇa hi | daridreṇeva maṇayaḥ prekṣaṇīyā hi sādhavo || 12 ||

Good people, whose minds are at rest, are truly fortunate - and they should be sought out with the greatest effort, the way a poor man would search hard just to get a look at jewels.

जिन अच्छे लोगों का मन शांत है, वे सच में भाग्यशाली हैं - और उन्हें पूरी मेहनत से ढूंढना चाहिए, ठीक वैसे ही जैसे एक गरीब आदमी हीरे-जवाहरात को बस देखने के लिए भी बड़ी मेहनत करता है।

सत्समागमसौन्दर्यशालिनी धीमतां मतिः । कमलेवाप्सरोवृन्दे सर्वदैव विराजते ॥ १३ ॥

satsamāgamasaundaryaśālinī dhīmatāṃ matiḥ | kamalevāpsarovṛnde sarvadaiva virājate || 13 ||

The mind of a wise person, made beautiful by meeting good people, always shines - the way the goddess Lakshmi shines even among a crowd of heavenly nymphs.

अच्छे लोगों से मिलने के कारण बुद्धिमान इंसान का मन सुंदर बनकर हमेशा चमकता है - ठीक वैसे ही जैसे देवी लक्ष्मी अप्सराओं की भीड़ में भी चमकती रहती हैं।

तेनामलविचारस्य पदस्याग्रावचूलिता । प्रथिता येन धन्येन न त्यक्ता साधुसंगतिः ॥ १४ ॥

tenāmalavicārasya padasyāgrāvacūlitā | prathitā yena dhanyena na tyaktā sādhusaṃgatiḥ || 14 ||

The fortunate person who never gives up the company of good people reaches the very top of clear understanding, and that becomes known to everyone.

जो भाग्यशाली इंसान अच्छे लोगों की संगत कभी नहीं छोड़ता, वह साफ समझ की सबसे ऊंची चोटी तक पहुंच जाता है, और यह बात सबको पता चल जाती है।

विच्छिन्नग्रन्थयस्तज्ज्ञाः साधवः सर्वसंमताः । सर्वोपायेन संसेव्यास्ते ह्युपाया भवाम्बुधौ ॥ १५ ॥

vicchinnagranthayastajjñāḥ sādhavo sarvasaṃmatāḥ | sarvopāyena saṃsevyāste hyupāyā bhavāmbudhau || 15 ||

Good people - whose inner knots are cut, who know the truth, and whom everyone respects - should be served in every way possible, because they are the means to cross the ocean of this world.

अच्छे लोग - जिनकी अंदर की गांठें कट चुकी हैं, जो सच्चाई को जानते हैं, और जिन्हें सब मानते हैं - उनकी हर तरह से सेवा करनी चाहिए, क्योंकि वे ही इस संसार रूपी समुद्र को पार करने का साधन हैं।

ते एते नरकाग्नीनां संशुष्केन्धनतां गताः । यैर्दृष्टा हेलया सन्तो नरकानलवारिदाः ॥ १६ ॥

te ete narakāgnīnāṃ saṃśuṣkendhanatāṃ gatāḥ | yairdṛṣṭā helayā santo narakānalavāridāḥ || 16 ||

For those who have even just glanced at good people, the fires of hell turn into dry, dead fuel - because good people are like rain clouds that put out the fire of hell.

जिन लोगों ने अच्छे लोगों को एक नजर भी देख लिया है, उनके लिए नरक की आग सूखी-मरी हुई लकड़ी जैसी हो जाती है - क्योंकि अच्छे लोग बारिश के बादलों जैसे हैं जो नरक की आग बुझा देते हैं।

दारिद्र्यं मरणं दुःखमित्यादिविषयो भ्रमः । संप्रशाम्यत्यशेषेण साधुसंगमभेषजैः ॥ १७ ॥

dāridryaṃ maraṇaṃ duḥkhamityādiviṣayo bhramaḥ | saṃpraśāmyatyśeṣeṇa sādhusaṃgamabheṣajaiḥ || 17 ||

The confusion about poverty, death, sorrow, and everything of that kind is completely cured by the medicine of meeting good people.

गरीबी, मौत, दुख, और ऐसी सब चीजों को लेकर जो भ्रम रहता है, वह अच्छे लोगों से मिलने की दवा से पूरी तरह ठीक हो जाता है।

संतोषः साधुसङ्गश्च विचारोऽथ शमस्तथा । एत एव भवाम्भोधावुपायास्तरणे नृणाम् ॥ १८ ॥

saṃtoṣaḥ sādhusaṅgaśca vicāro'tha śamastathā | eta eva bhavāmbhodhāvupāyāstarṇe nṛṇām || 18 ||

Contentment, the company of good people, inquiry into the truth, and a quiet mind - these four alone are the means for a man to cross the ocean of this world.

संतोष, अच्छे लोगों की संगत, सच की खोज, और शांत मन - बस यही चार चीजें इंसान के लिए इस संसार रूपी समुद्र को पार करने का साधन हैं।

संतोषः परमो लाभः सत्सङ्गः परमा गतिः । विचारः परमं ज्ञानं शमो हि परमं सुखम् ॥ १९ ॥

saṃtoṣaḥ paramo lābhaḥ satsaṅgaḥ paramā gatiḥ | vicāraḥ paramaṃ jñānaṃ śamo hi paramaṃ sukham || 19 ||

Contentment is the greatest gain. Company of good people is the highest path. Inquiry into the truth is the highest knowledge. A quiet mind is indeed the greatest happiness.

संतोष सबसे बड़ा फायदा है। अच्छे लोगों की संगत सबसे ऊंचा रास्ता है। सच की खोज सबसे ऊंचा ज्ञान है। शांत मन ही सबसे बड़ा सुख है।

चत्वार एते विमला उपाया भवभेदने । यैरभ्यस्तास्त उत्तीर्णा मोहवारिभवार्णवात् ॥ २० ॥

catvāra ete vimalā upāyā bhavabhedane | yairabhyastās ta uttīrṇā mohavāribhavārṇavāt || 20 ||

These four are the pure ways to break through this world. Whoever practices them has crossed over the ocean of existence, whose water is delusion.

ये चार चीजें ही इस संसार को तोड़ने के साफ-सुथरे रास्ते हैं। जो इन्हें अपनाता है, वह भ्रम रूपी पानी वाले इस संसार-समुद्र को पार कर जाता है।

एकस्मिन्नेव वै तेषामभ्यस्ते विमलोदये । चत्वारोऽपि किलाभ्यस्ता भवन्ति सुधियां वर ॥ २१ ॥

ekasminneva vai teṣāmabhyaste vimalodaye | catvāro'pi kilābhyastā bhavanti sudhiyāṃ vara || 21 ||

O best of the wise, when even just one of these four is practiced purely and grows, it is said that all four come to be practiced.

हे बुद्धिमानों में सबसे श्रेष्ठ, जब इन चारों में से एक को भी साफ मन से अपनाया जाता है और वह बढ़ता है, तो कहा जाता है कि चारों ही अपना ली गई हैं।

एकोऽप्येकोऽपि सर्वेषामेषां प्रसवभूरिह । सर्वसंसिद्धये तस्मात्यत्नेनैकं समाश्रयेत् ॥ २२ ॥

eko'pyeko'pye sarveṣāmeṣāṃ prasavabhūriha | sarvasaṃsiddhaye tasmātyatnenaiakaṃ samāśrayet || 22 ||

Each single one of these four is, by itself, the source of all the others. So, for complete success, one should hold on to just one of them with real effort.

इन चारों में से हर एक अकेला ही बाकी सबका मूल है। इसलिए पूरी सफलता के लिए मेहनत से इनमें से किसी एक को थाम लेना चाहिए।

सत्समागमसंतोषविचाराः सुविचारितम् । प्रवर्तन्ते शमस्वच्छे वाहनानीव सागरे ॥ २३ ॥

satsamāgamasantoṣavicārāḥ suvicāritam | pravartante śamasvacche vāhanānīva sāgare || 23 ||

Good company, contentment, and careful inquiry, when well practiced, move forward smoothly in the clear sea of a calm mind, like ships sailing on a calm ocean.

अच्छी संगत, संतोष, और सोच-समझकर की गई खोज, जब अच्छी तरह अपनाई जाती हैं, तो शांत मन के साफ समुद्र में आसानी से आगे बढ़ती हैं, ठीक वैसे ही जैसे शांत समुद्र में जहाज चलते हैं।

विचारसंतोषशमसत्समागमशालिनि । प्रवर्तन्ते श्रियो जन्तौ कल्पवृक्षाश्रिते यथा ॥ २४ ॥

vicārasantoṣaśamasatsamāgamaśālini | pravartante śriyo jantau kalpavṛkṣāśrite yathā || 24 ||

In a person who has inquiry, contentment, calmness, and the company of good people, good fortune keeps coming - just as it comes to someone who takes shelter under a wish-granting tree.

जिस इंसान में खोज, संतोष, शांति, और अच्छे लोगों की संगत होती है, उसमें अच्छा भाग्य लगातार आता रहता है - ठीक वैसे ही जैसे कल्पवृक्ष के नीचे शरण लेने वाले को मिलता है।

विचारशमसत्सङ्गसंतोषवति मानवे । प्रवर्तन्ते प्रपूर्णेन्दौ सौन्दर्याद्या गुणा इव ॥ २५ ॥

vicāraśamasatsaṅgasantoṣavati mānave | pravartante prapūrṇendau saundaryādyā guṇā iva || 25 ||

In a person who has inquiry, calmness, good company, and contentment, good qualities keep appearing - the way beauty and other such qualities appear on a full moon.

जिस इंसान में खोज, शांति, अच्छी संगत, और संतोष होते हैं, उसमें अच्छे गुण लगातार आते रहते हैं - ठीक वैसे ही जैसे पूरे चांद में सुंदरता और दूसरे गुण दिखते हैं।

सत्सङ्गसंतोषशमविचारवति सन्मतौ । प्रवर्तन्ते मन्त्रिवरे राजनीव जयश्रियः ॥ २६ ॥

satsaṅgasantoṣaśamavicāravati sanmatau | pravartante mantrivare rājanīva jayaśriyaḥ || 26 ||

In a good mind that has good company, contentment, calmness, and inquiry, glory keeps coming - the way victory keeps coming to a king who has an excellent minister.

जिस अच्छे मन में अच्छी संगत, संतोष, शांति, और खोज होती है, उसमें शान लगातार आती रहती है - ठीक वैसे ही जैसे एक बढ़िया मंत्री वाले राजा को जीत लगातार मिलती है।

तस्मादेकतमं नित्यमेतेषां रघुनन्दन । पौरुषेण मनो जित्वा यत्नेनाभ्याहरेद्गुणम् ॥ २७ ॥

tasmādekatamaṃ nityameteṣāṃ raghunandana | pauruṣeṇa mano jitvā yatnenābhyāharedguṇam || 27 ||

So, O Raghu's joy, conquer your mind through your own effort, and constantly, with real effort, bring in just one of these four qualities.

इसलिए, हे रघुनंदन, अपनी ही मेहनत से अपने मन को जीतो, और हमेशा, पूरी कोशिश से, इन चारों में से किसी एक गुण को अपने अंदर ले आओ।

परं पौरुषमाश्रित्य जित्वा चित्तमतङ्गजम् । यावदेको गुणो नान्तस्तावन्नास्त्युत्तमा गतिः ॥ २८ ॥

paraṃ pauruṣamāśritya jitvā cittamataṅgajaṃ | yāvadeko guṇo nāntastāvannāstyuttamā gatiḥ || 28 ||

Rely on your greatest effort and conquer the mind, which is like a wild elephant. Until even one of these good qualities enters you, there is no way to reach the highest goal.

अपनी पूरी ताकत लगाकर मन को जीतो, जो एक जंगली हाथी जैसा है। जब तक इनमें से एक भी अच्छा गुण तुम्हारे अंदर नहीं आता, तब तक सबसे ऊंचे लक्ष्य तक पहुंचने का कोई रास्ता नहीं है।

पौरुषेण प्रयत्नेन दन्तैर्दन्तान्विचूर्णयेत् । यावन्नाभिनिविष्टं ते मनो राम गुणार्जने ॥ २९ ॥

pauruṣeṇa prayatnena dantairdantānvicūrṇayet | yāvannābhiniviṣṭaṃ te mano rāma guṇārjane || 29 ||

Rama, grit your teeth and put in real, manly effort, until your mind is firmly fixed on gaining these good qualities.

हे राम, दांत भींचकर पूरी मर्दानगी से मेहनत करो, जब तक तुम्हारा मन इन अच्छे गुणों को पाने पर पूरी तरह जम न जाए।

देवो भवाथ यक्षो वा पुरुषः पादपोऽथ वा । तावत्तव महाबाहो नोपायोऽस्तीह कश्चन ॥ ३० ॥

devo bhavātha yakṣo vā puruṣaḥ pādapo'tha vā | tāvattava mahābāho nopāyo'stīha kaścana || 30 ||

Whether you become a god, a spirit, a man, or even a tree - until then, O mighty-armed one, there is no way out for you at all.

चाहे तुम देवता बन जाओ, यक्ष बन जाओ, इंसान बनो, या पेड़ ही बनो - तब तक, हे बलवान भुजाओं वाले, तुम्हारे लिए कोई भी रास्ता नहीं है।

एकस्मिन्नेव फलदे गुणे बलमुपागते । क्षीयन्ते सर्व एवाशु दोषा विवशचेतसः ॥ ३१ ॥

ekasmineva phalade guṇe balamupāgate | kṣīyante sarva evāśu doṣā vivśacetasaḥ || 31 ||

When even just one good quality grows strong and starts to bear fruit, all the faults that had a helpless grip on the mind quickly wither away.

जब एक भी अच्छा गुण मजबूत होकर फल देने लगता है, तो मन को लाचार बनाए रखने वाले सारे दोष जल्दी ही खत्म हो जाते हैं।

गुणे विवृद्धे वर्धन्ते गुणा दोषजयप्रदाः । दोषे विवृद्धे वर्धन्ते दोषा गुणविनाशनाः ॥ ३२ ॥

guṇe vivṛddhe vardhante guṇā doṣajayapradāḥ | doṣe vivṛddhe vardhante doṣā guṇavināśanāḥ || 32 ||

When one good quality grows, more good qualities grow with it, and together they defeat the faults. When one fault grows, more faults grow with it, and together they destroy the good qualities.

जब एक अच्छा गुण बढ़ता है, तो उसके साथ और अच्छे गुण भी बढ़ते हैं, और मिलकर वे दोषों को हरा देते हैं। जब एक दोष बढ़ता है, तो उसके साथ और दोष भी बढ़ते हैं, और मिलकर वे अच्छे गुणों को नष्ट कर देते हैं।

मनोमोहवने ह्यस्मिन्वेगिनी वासनासरित् । शुभाशुभबृहत्कूला नित्यं वहति जन्तुषु ॥ ३३ ॥

manomohavane hyasminveginī vāsanāsarit | śubhāśubhabṛhatkūlā nityaṃ vahati jantuṣu || 33 ||

In this forest of the mind's confusion, a fast river of old habits and desires always flows in every creature, with two great banks - one good, one bad.

मन के इस भ्रम रूपी जंगल में, पुरानी आदतों और इच्छाओं की एक तेज नदी हर जीव में हमेशा बहती रहती है, जिसके दो बड़े किनारे हैं - एक अच्छा, एक बुरा।

सा हि स्वेन प्रयत्नेन यस्मिन्नेव निपात्यते । कूले तेनैव वहति यथेच्छसि तथा कुरु ॥ ३४ ॥

sā hi svena prayatnena yasminneva nipātyate | kūle tenaiva vahati yathecchasi tathā kuru || 34 ||

By your own effort, you can direct that river toward whichever bank you choose, and it will flow that way. So do as you wish.

अपनी ही मेहनत से तुम उस नदी को जिस किनारे की ओर मोड़ना चाहो, मोड़ सकते हो, और वह उसी तरफ बहने लगेगी। इसलिए जैसा चाहो वैसा करो।

पुरुषयत्नजवेन मनोवने शुभतटानुगतां क्रमशः कुरु । वरमते निजभावमहानदीमहह तेन मनागपि नोह्यसे ॥ ३५ ॥

puruṣayatnajavena manovane śubhatatānugatāṃ kramśaḥ kuru | varamate nijabhāvamahānadīmahah tena manāgapi nohyase || 35 ||

So, step by step, use the force of your own effort to guide the river in the forest of your mind toward its good bank. O best of the wise, then that great river of your own nature will not be able to sweep you away, not even a little.
