śrīvālmīkiruvācavadatyevaṃ manomohavinivṛttikaraṃ vacaḥrāme rājīvapatrākṣe tasminrājakumārake || 1 ||
Valmiki said: While Rama, the prince with eyes like lotus petals, was speaking these words that free the mind from confusion,
वाल्मीकि जी ने कहा जब कमल की पंखड़ियों जैसी आँखों वाले राजकुमार राम मन का मोह मिटाने वाले ये वचन बोल रहे थे,
सर्वे बभूवुस्तत्रस्था विस्मयोत्फुल्ललोचनाःभिन्नाम्बरा देहरुहैर्गिरः श्रोतुमिवोद्धुरैः || २ ||
sarve babhūvustatrasthā vismayotphullalocanāḥbhinnāmbarā deharuhairgiraḥ śrotumivoddhuraiḥ || 2 ||
everyone sitting there had their eyes wide open with wonder; the hair on their bodies stood up and seemed to tear through their clothes, as if the hair itself wanted to hear the words.
वहाँ बैठे सभी लोगों की आँखें आश्चर्य से फैल गईं; उनके शरीर के रोंगटे खड़े होकर मानो कपड़ों को चीरते हुए बाहर निकल आए, जैसे रोंगटे भी ये वचन सुनना चाहते हों।
विरागवासनापास्तसमस्तभववासनाःमुहूर्तममृताम्भोधिवीचीविलुलिता इव || ३ ||
virāgavāsanāpāstasamastabhavavāsanāḥmuhūrtamamṛtāmbhodhivīcīvilulitā iva || 3 ||
The taste of dispassion drove out all their worldly desires, and for that moment they were like people tossed about by the waves of an ocean of nectar.
वैराग्य के स्वाद ने उनकी सारी सांसारिक इच्छाएँ दूर कर दीं, और उस पल वे मानो अमृत के समुद्र की लहरों में हिलोरें ले रहे हों, ऐसे लग रहे थे।
ता गिरो रामभद्रस्य तस्य चित्रार्पितैरिवसंश्रुताः शृणुकैरन्तरानन्दपदपीवरैः || ४ ||
tā giro rāmabhadrasya tasya citrārpitairivasaṃśrutāḥ śrṛṇukairantarānandapadapīvaraiḥ || 4 ||
Those words of gracious Rama were heard by everyone; they sat still, like figures painted in a picture, their hearts within brimming with joy.
उस दयालु राम के ये वचन सभी ने सुने; वे चित्र में बने पुतलों जैसे स्थिर बैठे थे, और उनके भीतर आनंद भरा हुआ था।
वसिष्ठविश्वामित्राद्यैर्मुनिभिः संसदि स्थितैःजयन्तधृष्टिप्रमुखैर्मन्त्रिभिर्मन्त्रकोविदैः || ५ ||
vasiṣṭhaviśvāmitrādyairmunibhiḥ saṃsadi sthitaiḥjayantadhṛṣṭipramukhairmantribhirmantrakovidaiḥ || 5 ||
Sages headed by Vasishtha and Vishvamitra, seated in that assembly, heard them, and so did the ministers headed by Jayanta and Dhrishti, men skilled at giving counsel.
उस सभा में बैठे वसिष्ठ और विश्वामित्र आदि मुनियों ने भी उन्हें सुना, और सलाह देने में कुशल जयंत तथा धृष्टि जैसे मंत्रियों ने भी सुना।
नृपैर्दशरथप्रख्यैः पौरैः पारशवादिभिः | सामन्तै राजपुत्रैश्च ब्राह्मणैर्ब्रह्मवादिभिः || ६ ||
nṛpairdaśarathaprakhyaiḥ pauraiḥ pāraśavādibhiḥ | sāmantai rājaputraiśca brāhmaṇairbrahmavādibhiḥ || 6 ||
Kings as renowned as Dasharatha heard them, and so did the townspeople, including the Parashavas, the feudal lords, the princes, and the brahmins who spoke of Brahman, the highest truth.
दशरथ जैसे प्रसिद्ध राजाओं ने भी उन्हें सुना, और साथ ही पारशव आदि नगरवासियों ने, सामंतों और राजकुमारों ने, तथा परम सत्य ब्रह्म की बात करने वाले ब्राह्मणों ने भी सुना।
तथा भृत्यैऽरमात्यैश्च पञ्जरस्थैश्च पक्षिभिः | क्रीडामृगैर्गतस्पन्दैस्तुरंगैस्त्यक्तचर्वणैः || ७ ||
tathā bhṛtyairamātyaiśca pañjarasthaiśca pakṣibhiḥ | krīḍāmṛgairgataspandaiturangaitsthyaktacarvaṇaiḥ || 7 ||
Likewise the servants and the ministers heard them, and so did the birds sitting in their cages, the pet deer who had stopped moving, and the horses who had stopped chewing their feed.
वैसे ही सेवकों और मंत्रियों ने भी सुना, और पिंजरों में बैठे पक्षियों ने, हिलना-डुलना भूल गए पालतू हिरणों ने, और चारा चबाना छोड़ चुके घोड़ों ने भी सुना।
कौसल्याप्रमुखैश्चैव निजवातायनस्थितैः | संशान्तभूषणारावैरस्पन्दैर्वनितागणैः || ८ ||
kausalyāpramukhaiścaiva nijavātāyanasthitaiḥ | saṃśāntabhūṣaṇārāvairaspandairvanitāgaṇaiḥ || 8 ||
The women headed by Kausalya, standing at their own windows, heard them too - they stood motionless, and even the sound of their ornaments had gone quiet.
कौसल्या आदि स्त्रियों ने भी, जो अपनी-अपनी खिड़कियों में खड़ी थीं, उन्हें सुना - वे निश्चल खड़ी थीं, और उनके गहनों की आवाज़ भी शांत हो गई थी।
उद्यानवल्लीनिलयैर्विटङ्कनिलयैरपि | अक्षुब्धपक्षततिभिर्विहङ्गैर्विरतारवैः || ९ ||
udyānavallīnilayairviṭaṅkanilayairapi | akṣubdhpakṣatatibhirvihangairvirataravaiḥ || 9 ||
The birds living among the creepers in the garden, and those living in cages, heard them too - their wings had stopped stirring, and their calls had gone silent.
बगीचे की लताओं में रहने वाले पक्षियों ने, और पिंजरों में रहने वाले पक्षियों ने भी सुना - उनके पंख हिलना बंद हो गए थे और उनकी बोली थम गई थी।
सिद्धैर्नभश्चरैश्चैव तथा गन्धर्वकिन्नरैः | नारदव्यासपुलहप्रमुखैर्मुनिपुङ्गवैः || १० ||
siddhairnabhaścaraiścaiva tathā gandharvakinnaraiḥ | nāradavyāsapulahapramukhairmunipuṅgavaiḥ || 10 ||
The Siddhas and the other wanderers of the sky heard them, and so did the Gandharvas and Kinnaras, and the great sages headed by Narada, Vyasa, and Pulaha.
सिद्धों और आकाश में विचरने वालों ने भी सुना, और गंधर्वों तथा किन्नरों ने, और नारद, व्यास तथा पुलह जैसे श्रेष्ठ मुनियों ने भी सुना।
अन्यैश्च देवदेवेशविद्याधरमहोरगैः | रामस्य ता विचित्रार्था महोदारा गिरः श्रुताः || ११ ||
anyaiśca devadeveśavidyādharmahoragaiḥ | rāmasya tā vicitrārthā mahodārā giraḥ śrutāḥ || 11 ||
And others too heard them - the gods, the lord of the gods, the vidyadharas, and the great serpents. So it was that everyone heard those wondrous and most noble words of Rama.
और इनके अलावा देवताओं ने, देवताओं के स्वामी ने, विद्याधरों ने तथा महानागों ने भी सुना। इस प्रकार राम के वे अद्भुत और अत्यंत उदार वचन सबने सुने।
अथ तूष्णीं स्थितवति रामे राजीवलोचने | तस्मिन्रघुकुलाकाशशशाङ्के शशिसुन्दरे || १२ ||
atha tūṣṇīṃ sthitavati rāme rājīvalocane | tasminraghukulākāśaśaśāṅke śaśisundare || 12 ||
Then Rama, the lotus-eyed one, fell silent - he who was like the moon in the sky of the Raghu family, and as beautiful as the moon itself.
फिर कमल जैसी आँखों वाले राम चुप हो गए - वे रघुकुल के आकाश के चंद्रमा जैसे थे, और चाँद जितने ही सुंदर थे।
साधुवादगिरा सार्धं सिद्धसार्थसमीरिता | वितानकसमा व्योम्नः पौष्पी वृष्टिः पपात ह || १३ ||
sādhuvādagirā sārdhaṃ siddhasārthasamīritā | vitānakasamā vyomnaḥ pauṣpī vṛṣṭiḥ papāta ha || 13 ||
At that moment, a rain of flowers fell from the sky like a spreading canopy, stirred up by crowds of Siddhas, together with their cries of well said, well said!
उसी क्षण आकाश से मानो एक चंदोवा फैलाते हुए फूलों की वर्षा होने लगी, जिसे सिद्धों की भीड़ ने हिलाया था, और साथ ही "साधु, साधु" की आवाज़ें भी गूँज रही थीं।
मन्दारकोशविश्रान्तभ्रमरद्वन्द्वनादिनी | मधुरामोदसौन्दर्यमुदितोन्मदमानवा || १४ ||
mandārakośaviśrāntabhramaradvandvanādinī | madhurāmodasaundaryamuditounmadamānavā || 14 ||
That rain hummed with pairs of bees resting inside the petals of coral-tree flowers, and its sweet fragrance and beauty filled people with such joy that they seemed intoxicated.
उस वर्षा में मंदार फूलों की पंखड़ियों में बैठे भँवरों की जोड़ियाँ गुनगुना रही थीं, और उसकी मीठी खुशबू और सुंदरता से लोग इतने आनंदित हुए कि वे मतवाले जैसे लगने लगे।
व्योमवातविनुन्नेव तारकाणां परम्परा | पतितेव धरापीठे स्वर्गस्त्रीहसितच्छटा || १५ ||
vyomavātavinunneva tārakāṇāṃ paramparā | patiteva dharāpīṭhe svargastrīhasitacchṭā || 15 ||
It looked as if a line of stars, blown by the wind of the sky, had fallen down onto the earth, or as if the sparkle of the laughter of heavenly women had dropped down to the ground.
वह ऐसी लग रही थी मानो आकाश की हवा से उड़कर तारों की एक कतार धरती पर गिर पड़ी हो, या मानो स्वर्ग की स्त्रियों की हँसी की चमक ज़मीन पर बिखर गई हो।
वृष्यमूककचन्मेघलवावलिरिव च्युता | हैयंगवीनपिण्डानामीरितेव परम्परा || १६ ||
vṛṣyamūkakacanmeghalavāvaliriva cyutā | haiyaṃgavīnapiṇḍānāmīriteva paramparā || 16 ||
The falling flowers looked like a row of quietly gleaming pieces of rain cloud, or like an unbroken stream of soft lumps of fresh butter dropping down.
गिरते हुए फूल मानो चुपचाप चमकते बादल के टुकड़ों की कतार जैसे लग रहे थे, या मानो ताज़े मक्खन की गोलियों की लगातार धारा नीचे गिर रही हो।
हिमवृष्टिरिवोदारा मुक्ताहारचयोपमा | ऐन्दवी रश्मिमालेव क्षीरोर्मीणामिवाततिः || १७ ||
himavṛṣṭirivodārā muktāhāracayopamā | aindavī raśmimāleva kṣīrormīṇāmivātatiḥ || 17 ||
That rain was as abundant as a snowfall, like a heap of pearl necklaces, like a garland of moonbeams, like a spreading expanse of milky waves.
वह वर्षा बर्फ गिरने जितनी भरपूर थी, मोतियों के हारों के ढेर जैसी लग रही थी, मानो चाँद की किरणों की माला हो, या दूध की लहरों का फैला हुआ विस्तार हो।
किञ्जल्काम्भोजवलिता भ्रमद्भृङ्गकदम्बका | सीत्कारगायदामोदिमधुरानिललोलिता || १८ ||
kiñjalkāmbhojavalitā bhramadbhṛṅgakadambakā | sītkāragāyadāmodimadhurānilalolitā || 18 ||
It was mixed with the pollen of lotus flowers, swarms of bees flew about humming over it, and a sweet, fragrant breeze stirred it, sounding as if it were singing.
उसमें कमल के फूलों का पराग मिला हुआ था, भँवरों के झुंड गुनगुनाते हुए उस पर मंडरा रहे थे, और मीठी सुगंधित हवा उसे हिला रही थी जो मानो गुनगुनाकर गा रही हो।
प्रभ्रमत्केतकीव्यूहा प्रस्फुरत्कैरवोत्करा | प्रपतत्कुन्दवलया चलत्कुवलयालया || १९ ||
prabhramatketakīvyūhā prasphuratkairavotkarā | prapatatkundavalayā calatkuvalayālayā || 19 ||
Clusters of ketaki flowers whirled about in it, heaps of white water lilies glistened, rings of jasmine flowers fell, and beds of blue lotuses stirred.
उसमें केतकी के फूलों के गुच्छे घूम रहे थे, सफेद कुमुद फूलों के ढेर चमक रहे थे, कुंद के फूलों के घेरे गिर रहे थे, और नीले कमलों की क्यारियाँ हिल रही थीं।
आपूरिताङ्गणरसा गृहाच्छादनचत्वरा | उद्ग्रीवपुरवास्तव्यनरनारीविलोकिता || २० ||
āpūritāṅgaṇarasā gṛhācchādanacatvarā | udgrīvapuravāstavyanaranārīvilokitā || 20 ||
It filled the courtyards with delight, covered the roofs and terraces of houses, and the men and women living in the city craned their necks up to watch it.
उसने आँगनों को खुशी से भर दिया, घरों की छतों और आँगनों को ढक दिया, और नगर में रहने वाले स्त्री-पुरुष गर्दन उठाकर उसे देखते रहे।
निरभ्रोत्पलसंकाशव्योमवृष्टिरनाकुला | अदृष्टपूर्वा सर्वस्य जनस्य जनितस्मया || २१ ||
nirabhrotpalasaṃkāśavyomavṛṣṭiranākulā | adṛṣṭapūrvā sarvasya janasya janitasmayā || 21 ||
This rain fell from a sky as clear and blue as a lotus, without any cloud, and without any confusion; no one had ever seen anything like it before, and it filled every person with wonder.
यह वर्षा बादल रहित, कमल जैसे नीले साफ आकाश से बिना किसी उलझन के हो रही थी; ऐसा पहले कभी किसी ने नहीं देखा था, इसलिए हर व्यक्ति चकित रह गया।
अदृश्याम्बरसिद्धौघकरोत्करसमीरिता | सा मुहूर्तचतुर्भागं पुष्पवृष्टिः पपात ह || २२ ||
adṛśyāmbarasiddhaughakarotkarasamīritā | sā muhūrtacaturbhāgaṃ puṣpavṛṣṭiḥ papāta ha || 22 ||
Stirred by the hands of crowds of invisible Siddhas moving in the sky, that rain of flowers fell for a quarter of a muhurta, about twelve minutes.
आकाश में घूमते हुए अदृश्य सिद्धों की भीड़ के हाथों से हिलाई गई वह फूलों की वर्षा एक मुहूर्त के चौथाई भाग तक, यानी करीब बारह मिनट तक, गिरती रही।
आपूरितसभालोके शान्ते कुसुमवर्षणे | इमं सिद्धगणालापं शुश्रुवुस्ते सभागताः || २३ ||
āpūritasabhāloke śānte kusumavarṣaṇe | imaṃ siddhagaṇālāpaṃ śuśruvuste sabhāgatāḥ || 23 ||
When that flower-rain, which had filled the whole assembly hall, had quieted down, those gathered in the assembly heard this talk among the group of Siddhas.
जब सभा को भर देने वाली वह फूलों की वर्षा शांत हो गई, तब सभा में बैठे लोगों ने सिद्धों के समूह के बीच होने वाली यह बातचीत सुनी।
आकल्पं सिद्धसेनासु भ्रमद्भिरभितोदिवम् | अपूर्वमिदमस्माभिः श्रुतं श्रुतिरसायनम् || २४ ||
ākalpaṃ siddhasenāsu bhramadbhirabhitodivam | apūrvamidamasmābhiḥ śrutaṃ śrutirasāyanam || 24 ||
Even we, who forever wander through the sky among the hosts of Siddhas, have never heard anything like this before - today we have heard something that is like a tonic for the ear.
हम जो सदा सिद्धों की सेना के साथ आकाश में घूमते रहते हैं, हमने भी आज तक ऐसा कभी नहीं सुना था; आज हमने ऐसी बात सुनी है जो कानों के लिए अमृत के समान है।
यदनेन किलोदारमुक्तं रघुकुलेन्दुना | वीतरागतया तद्धि वाक्पतेरप्यगोचरम् || २५ ||
yadanena kilodāramuktaṃ raghukulendunā | vītarāgatayā taddhi vākpaterapyagocaram || 25 ||
What this moon of the Raghu family has spoken so nobly, out of his freedom from passion, even the lord of speech himself could not have spoken.
रघुकुल के इस चंद्रमा राम ने वैराग्य के कारण जो यह उदार बात कही है, वह तो वाणी के स्वामी के लिए भी असंभव थी।
अहो बत महत्पुण्यमद्यास्माभिरिदं श्रुतम् | वचो राममुखोद्भूतं महाह्लादकरं धियः || २६ ||
aho bata mahatpuṇyamadyāsmābhiridaṃ śrutam | vaco rāmamukhodbhūtaṃ mahāhlādakaraṃ dhiyaḥ || 26 ||
Oh, what great merit is ours, that today we have heard these words, born from Rama's mouth, which bring such great delight to the mind!
अहा! आज हमने कितना बड़ा पुण्य पाया है कि हमने राम के मुख से निकले ये वचन सुने, जो मन को इतना बड़ा आनंद देते हैं!
उपशमामृतसुन्दरमादरा दधिगतोत्तमतापदमेष यत् | कथितवानुचितं रघुनन्दनः सपदि तेन वयं प्रतिबोधिताः || २७ ||
upaśamāmṛtasundaramādarā dadhigatottamatāpadameṣa yat | kathitavānucitaṃ raghunandanaḥ sapadi tena vayaṃ pratibodhitāḥ || 27 ||
What Rama, the joy of the Raghu family, has so fittingly said - words made beautiful by the nectar of peace, reached through deep reverence, and rising to the highest state - has, by that very speech, awakened us at once.
रघुकुल के आनंद राम ने जो यह उचित बात कही है - जो शांति के अमृत से सुंदर है, गहरे आदर से प्राप्त हुई है, और परम अवस्था तक पहुँचाती है - उसी वाणी से हम तुरंत जाग उठे हैं।
