Sri Rama said: In this life, as fragile as a drop of water hanging on the shaking leaf of a tall tree, and in this body, delicate as a sliver of the cool moon on Shiva's head,
as fragile as the skin on the throat of a frog croaking loudly in a rice field, this world is a row of traps for every living creature, even where friends and good people meet,
stirred by the wind of old habits, sometimes cut open by a sharp flash of lightning, where the thick, frightening fog-cloud of delusion crashes and thunders,
where the peacock of greed dances a wild, fierce dance in this restless place, and where the tree of misfortune, in full bloom, bursts open with a crackling sound,
cruel, where death, like a cat, carries off every creature as if they were mice, and where an endless stream keeps falling from some unknown height above,
What is the way out? What is the remedy? What should I even think about this? What can I rely on? By what means can this forest of life, which is bound to end badly, be avoided?
na tadasti pṛthivyāṃ vā divi deveṣu vā kvacit | sudhiyastucchamapyetadyannayanti na ramyatām || 7 ||
There is nothing anywhere, on this earth, or in heaven among the gods, that wise people cannot turn into something delightful, even if it is a small, worthless thing.
Through the fruit that hope finally yields, it seems to become lovely, as if bathed in milk, just as the earth becomes lovely coated in honey bright with flowers.
Since I have seen how the world runs, and that everything, seen and unseen alike, comes to ruin, how then should I act as I walk the paths of this forest of the world?
The great sicknesses of attachment and hatred, the heaps of pleasures, and worldly riches, how do they not torment a creature who is wandering in the ocean of this world?
kathaṃ ca dhīravaryāgnau patatāpi na dahyatepāvake pāradeneva rasena rasaśālinā || 13 ||
And how does the best of the wise, even while falling into fire, not get burned by it, like mercury, which, filled with its own special power, does not burn in fire?
Since, indeed, in this world there is no staying alive without doing worldly work, just as someone who has fallen into the ocean cannot stay out of the water.
Action that is completely free of attachment and hatred, entirely without pleasure or pain, there is no such thing here, any more than there is a flame of fire that does not burn.
Tell me the best method by which suffering will not come to me even while I am engaged in worldly life, or the best way to handle worldly life so that it brings no suffering.
As you know it, my lord, tell me, so that my confusion may go away, the thing by which good and wise people have surely reached a state completely free of sorrow.
Then, step by step, giving up even the awareness of breathing in and out, I will give up this whole structure called "the body," this source of trouble.
nāhamasya na me nānyaḥ śāmyāmyasnehadīpavat sarvameva parityajya tyajāmīdaṃ kalevaram || 26 ||
I do not belong to this body, it is not mine, nor does it belong to anyone else; I will go out like a lamp that has run out of oil. Giving up everything completely, I will give up this body.
Sri Valmiki said: Having said this, Rama, as lovely as the spotless, cool moon, his mind now blossoming with the deepest reflection, fell silent, like a peacock that stops calling out from tiredness before the great rain clouds.
