1

bharadvāja uvāca | jīvanmuktasthitiṃ brahmarkṛtvā rāghavamāditaḥ | kramaatkathaya me nityaṃ bhaviṣyāmi sukhī yathā || 1 ||

English

Bharadvaja said, "Brahmin, starting with Rama's state of being free while still alive, tell me everything in order, so that I may always be happy."

śrīvālmīkiruvāca | bhramasya jāgatasyāsya jātasyākāśavarṇavat | apunahsmaraṇaṃ manye sādho vismaraṇaṃ varam || 2 ||

English

Sri Valmiki said, "This confusion about the world arose the way a color seems to appear in the empty sky, when nothing is really there. I think, good sir, that forgetting it completely, so that it never comes to mind again, is the best thing."

dṛśyātyantābhāvabodhaṃ vinā tannaanubhūyate | kadācitskenacinnāma svabodhoanviṣyatāmatḥ || 3 ||

English

But no one, ever, experiences that forgetting without first realizing that the visible world does not exist at all. So, whoever you are, seek to know your own true self.

sa ceha saṃbhavatyeva tadarthamidamātatam | śāstramākarṇayasi cet tattvamāpsyasi nānyathā || 4 ||

English

And that knowledge can indeed be reached in this life; this scripture has been made this long and detailed for that very purpose. If you listen to it carefully, you will reach the truth, and not otherwise.

jagadbhramoayam dṛśyoapi nāstyevetyanubhūyate | varṇo vyomna ivākhedādvicāreṇāmunāangha || 5 ||

English

This confusion we call "the world," although it is seen, is found through this inquiry, without any real struggle, to not exist at all, O sinless one, the way a color seems to appear in the empty sky.

dṛśyaṃ nāstīti bodhena manaso dṛśyamārjanam | sampannaṃ cet tadutpannā parā nirvāṇanirvṛtiḥ || 6 ||

English

When, through the understanding that "the visible world does not exist," the mind is fully cleansed of the visible world, then the highest bliss of liberation is born from that.

anyathā śāstragarteṣu luṭhatāṃ bhavatāmiha | bhavatyakṛtrimājñānāṃ kalpairapi na nirvṛtiḥ || 7 ||

English

Otherwise, for people like you who only roll about in the pits of scripture, and whose ignorance is real and deep, liberation will not come even after countless ages.

aśeṣeṇa parityāgo vāsanānāṃ ya uttamaḥ | mokṣaṃ ityucyate brahmansa eva vimalakramaḥ || 8 ||

English

To give up all desires completely, leaving nothing behind, is the highest thing to do, and it is called liberation, O Brahmin. This alone is the pure path.

kṣīṇāyāṃ vāsanāyāṃ tu ceto galati satvaram | kṣīṇāyāṃ śītasaṃtatyāṃ brahmanhimakaṇo yathā || 9 ||

English

But once desire is used up, the mind melts away quickly, O Brahmin, the way a grain of frost melts once the spell of cold is broken.

ayaṃ vāsanayā deho dhriyate bhūtapañjaraḥ | tanunāntarniviṣṭena muktaughstantunā yathā || 10 ||

English

This body, a cage made of the elements, is held together by desire, the way a string of pearls is held together by the thin thread running through the inside of them.

vāsanā dvividhā proktā śuddhā ca malinā tathā | malinā janmano hetuḥ śuddhā janmavināśinī || 11 ||

English

Desire is said to be of two kinds: pure and impure. The impure desire is the cause of birth; the pure desire destroys birth.

ajñānasughanākārā ghanāhaṃkāraśālinī | punarjanmakarī proktā malinā vāsanā budhaiḥ || 12 ||

English

The wise call it "impure desire" when it is thick with ignorance, heavy with ego, and brings about rebirth.

punarjanmāṅkuraṃ tyaktvā sthitā saṃbhṛṣṭabījavat | dehārthaṃ dhriyate jñātajñeyā śuddheti cocyate || 13 ||

English

But the desire that has given up the sprout of rebirth, and stays like a seed that has been fully roasted and so can never sprout again, and is kept alive only for the sake of the body, by one who has known what is to be known, that is called "pure desire."

apunarjanmakaraṇī jīvanmukteṣu dehiṣu | vāsanā vidyate śuddhā dehe cakra iva bhramaḥ || 14 ||

English

In people who are free while still alive, a pure desire remains that does not bring about rebirth. It stays in the body the way a wheel, once set spinning, keeps turning for a while.

ye śuddhavāsanā bhūyo na janmānarthabhājanam | jñātajñeyāsta ucyante jīvanmuktā mahādhiyaḥ || 15 ||

English

Those whose desire is pure, who are no longer subject to the trouble of being born again, who have known what is to be known, they, of great wisdom, are called "free while still alive."

jīvanmuktipadaṃ prāpto yathā rāmo mahāmatiḥ | tatte'haṃ śṛṇu vakṣyābhi jarāmaraṇaśāntaye || 16 ||

English

Listen, I will tell you how Rama, a man of great wisdom, reached the state of being free while still alive, so that old age and death may come to an end.

bharadvāja mahābuddhe rāmakramamimaṃ śubham | śṛṇu vakṣyāmi tenaiva sarvaṃ jñāsyasi sarvadā || 17 ||

English

Bharadvaja, you of great intelligence, listen to this good and complete account of Rama's life. I will tell it to you, and through it alone you will always know everything.

vidyāgṛhādvinisṛkramya rāmo rājīvalocanaḥ | divasānyanayadgehe līlābhirakutobhayaḥ || 18 ||

English

Rama, the lotus-eyed, came out of the school where he had studied, and spent his days at home in play, without any fear.

atha gacchati kāle tu pālayatyavaninṛpe | prajāsu vītaśokāsu sthitāsu vigatajvaram || 19 ||

English

Then, as time passed, the king ruled the land, and his subjects lived free from sorrow and free from any distress.

tīrthapuṇyāśramaśreṇīrdraṣṭumutkaṇṭhitaṃ manaḥ | rāmasyābhūdbhṛśaṃ tatra kadāciddguṇaśālinaḥ || 20 ||

English

At that time, Rama, a man full of good qualities, once felt a strong wish in his mind to go and see the many holy places and sacred hermitages.

rāghavaścintayitvaivamupetya caraṇau pituḥ | haṃsaḥ padmāviva navau jagrāha nakhakesarau || 21 ||

English

Thinking this, Rama went to his father's feet and took hold of his toenails, which were fresh like two lotuses, the way a swan takes hold of the filaments inside two lotuses.

śrīrāma uvāca | tīrthāni devasadmāni vanānyāyatanāni ca | draṣṭumutkaṇṭhitaṃ tāta mamedaṃ nātha mānasam || 22 ||

English

Sri Rama said, "Father, my lord, my mind is eager to see the holy places, the temples of the gods, the forests, and the sacred shrines."

tadetāmarthitāṃ pūrvāṃ saphalāṃ kartumarhasi | na so'sti bhuvane nātha tvayā yo'rthī na mānitaḥ || 23 ||

English

So you ought to make this earlier request of his succeed. There is no one in this world, my lord, who came asking and was not honored by you.

iti saṃprārthito rājā vasiṣṭhena samaṃ tadā | vicāryāmuñcadevainaṃ rāmaṃ prathamamarthinam || 24 ||

English

Asked like this, the king then thought it over together with Vasishtha, and let Rama go — Rama, who had asked first.

śubhe nakṣatradivase bhrātṛbhyāṃ saha rāghavaḥ | maṅgalālaṃkṛtavapuḥ kṛtasvastyayano dvijaiḥ || 25 ||

English

On an auspicious day, under a good star, Raghava, together with his two brothers, his body decked with auspicious ornaments, had brahmins perform blessing rites for him,

vasiṣṭhaprahitairvipraiḥ śāstrajñaiśca samanvitaḥ| snigdhaiḥ katipayaireva rājaputravaraiḥ saha || 26 ||

English

joined by brahmins sent by Vasishtha who knew the scriptures well, and by just a few loving, excellent princes,

ambābhirvihitāśībhirāliṅgyāliṅgya bhūṣitaḥ| niragātsvagṛhāttasmāttīrthayātrārthamudyataḥ || 27 ||

English

embraced again and again by his mothers who gave their blessings, and decked with ornaments, he went out from that home of his, ready to go on a pilgrimage to holy places.

nirgataḥ svapurātpauraistūryaghoṣeṇa vāditaḥ| pīyamānaḥ purastrīṇāṃ netrairbhṛṅgaughabhaṅguraiḥ || 28 ||

English

Once he had left his own city, the citizens greeted him with the sound of musical instruments, and the women of the city drank him in with their eyes — eyes as restless as a swarm of bees.

grāmīṇalalanālolahastapadmāpanoditaiḥ| lājavarṣairvikīrṇātmā himairiva himācalaḥ || 29 ||

English

Showered with roasted rice thrown by the restless lotus-hands of village women, his whole body was covered — like the Himalaya covered with snow.

āvarjayanvipragaṇānpariśṛṇvanprajāśiṣaḥ| ālokayandigantāṃśca paricakrāma jāṅgalān || 30 ||

English

Winning over the groups of brahmins, listening to the blessings of the people, and gazing at the far horizons, he wandered through the wild, dry forest lands.

athārabhya svakāttasmātkramātkoshalamaṇḍalāt | snānadānatapodhyānapūrvakaṃ sa dadarśa ha || 31 ||

English

Then, beginning from his own kingdom of Koshala, he went on to see, step by step — always bathing, giving gifts, doing austerities, and meditating —
