divi bhūmau tathākāśe bahirantaśca me vibhuḥ | yo vibhātyavabhāsātmā tasmai sarvātmane namaḥ || 1 ||
In heaven, on earth, and in the sky, outside me and inside me, there shines a being who is present everywhere and whose very nature is light. I bow to that self of all.
Valmiki said: Whoever has decided, "I am bound; let me become free," is neither completely ignorant nor already wise. That person is the one fit for this teaching.
kathopāyānvicāryādau mokṣopāyānimānatha | yo vicārayati prājño na sa bhūyo'bhijāyate || 3 ||
Whoever first thinks over the ways told in this story, and then thinks over these ways to freedom, that wise person, having thought it through, is not born again.
When that Ramayana is heard, a person will cross over delusion completely, the way someone crosses to the far side of the ocean by a bridge full of countless good qualities.
I quickly honored that god with a welcome offering, water for his feet, and other such things. Then that great being, who cares for the good of every creature, spoke to me.
Wise one, act in the world in such a way that your actions make you happy - the way the lotus-eyed Rama acts, his mind not attached to anything at all.
These eight are called the ministers. Their minds are even and free from passion. They are liberated while still alive, great souls who simply accept whatever comes their way.
If you, my son, conduct yourself the way these men do - in making offerings, in giving, in receiving, in living, and in remembering - then you are indeed free from all trouble.
apārasaṃsārasamudrapātī labdhvā parāṃ yuktimudārasattvaḥ | na śokamāyāti na dainyameti gatajvarastiṣṭhati nityatṛptaḥ || 31 ||
A person who has fallen into the endless ocean of this world, but who has gained the highest way and has a noble nature, does not fall into grief and does not become wretched. Free from all torment, he remains always content.
