śrīrāma uvāca | iti me doṣadāvāgnidagdhe mahati cetasi | prasphuranti na bhogāśā mṛgatṛṣṇāḥ saraḥsviv || 1 ||

English

Sri Rama said: In my mind, now vast, but burned clean by the wildfire of these faults, no hope of pleasure rises any more, just as no mirage of water rises over a real lake.

pratyahaṃ yāti kaṭutāmeṣā saṃsārasaṃsthitiḥ | kālapākavaśāllolā rasā nimbalatā yathā || 2 ||

English

Day by day, this state of worldly life turns more bitter, growing unstable under the pull of time's ripening, like the sap of a neem vine.

vṛddhimāyāti dourjanyaṃ saujanyaṃ yāti tānavam | karañjakarkaśe rājan pratyahaṃ janacetasi || 3 ||

English

Wickedness keeps growing, and goodness keeps thinning out, day by day, O king, in the minds of people, which have become as harsh as the karanja tree.

bhajyate bhuvi maryādā jhaṭityeva dinaṃ prati | śuṣkeva māṣaśimbīkā ṭaṅkārakaravaṃ vinā || 4 ||

English

On this earth, moral limits break suddenly, day after day, like a dried bean pod bursting open without even a cracking sound.

rājyebhyo bhogapūgebhyaścintāvadbhyo munīśvara | nirastacintākalitā varekāntaśīlatā || 5 ||

English

Better than kingdoms, and better than heaps of pleasures - both loaded with worry - O lord of sages, is a life lived alone, free of all anxiety.

nānandāya mamodyānaṃ na sukhāya mama striyaḥ| na harṣāya mamārthāśā śāmyāmi manasā saha || 6 ||

English

My garden no longer gives me joy, my wives no longer give me pleasure, my hopes of wealth no longer give me delight; my mind itself is settling into quiet.

English

This world is impermanent and without real happiness; craving, O father, is a burden hard to carry. My mind, struck down by restlessness, how will I ever find peace?

English

I do not welcome death, nor do I welcome life. As I am, so I remain - free of the fever of desire.

kiṃ me rājyena kiṃ bhogaiḥ kimarthena kimīhitaiḥ| ahaṃkāravśādetatsa eva galito mama || 9 ||

English

What use is a kingdom to me? What use are pleasures? What use is wealth? What use are any of my ambitions? All of this existed only because of my pride - and that very pride of mine has now melted away.

janmāvalivaratrāyāmindriyagranthayo dṛḍhāḥ| ye baddhāstadvimokṣārthaṃ yatante ye ta uttamāḥ || 10 ||

English

The knots of the senses are tied tightly onto the rope made of one birth after another. Those who struggle to free themselves from that bondage are the best of people.

mathitaṃ māninīlokairmano makaraketunā | komalaṃ khuraniṣpeṣaiḥ kamalaṃ kariṇā yathā || 11 ||

English

The mind has been churned by crowds of proud women, through Kama, the love-god whose banner carries a sea-monster - just as a soft lotus is crushed under an elephant's hooves.

adya cet svacchayā buddhyā munīndra na cikitsyate | bhūyaścittacikitsāyāstatkilāvasaraḥ kutaḥ || 12 ||

English

If today, O foremost of sages, this mind is not treated with a clear, calm intellect, then where indeed will there ever again be a chance to treat it?

viṣaṃ viṣayavaiṣamyaṃ na viṣaṃ viṣamucyate | janmāntaraghā viṣayā ekadehaharaṃ viṣam || 13 ||

English

The real poison is the imbalance caused by sense-objects - what is usually called poison is not true poison. Sense-objects harm us across other births too, while ordinary poison takes away only one body.

na sukhāni na duḥkhāni na mitrāṇi na bāndhavāḥ | na jīvitaṃ na maraṇaṃ bandhāya jñasya cetasaḥ || 14 ||

English

Neither pleasures nor pains, neither friends nor relatives, neither life nor death, bind the mind of one who truly knows.

English

So tell me quickly, O brahmin, best among those who know the past and the future, how I may become someone free of grief, fear, and struggle, who truly knows the truth.

vāsanājālavalitā duḥkhakaṇṭakasaṃkulānipātotpātabahulā bhīmarūpā'jñatāṭavī || 16 ||

English

This forest of not-knowing is tangled with the net of old desires, crowded with the thorns of suffering, full of sudden falls and disasters, terrible to look at.

English

I cannot bear its grinding, sharp as a saw's edge, O sage - this violence of destruction and craving for things that comes from living in this world.

idaṃ nāstīdamastīti vyavahārāñjanabhramaḥdhunotīdaṃ calaṃ ceto rajorāśimivānilaḥ || 18 ||

English

The illusion-causing spell of daily life - thinking "this exists," "this doesn't exist" - keeps shaking this restless mind, the way wind scatters a heap of dust.

tṛṣṇātantulavaprotaṃ jīvasaṃcayamauktikamcidacchāṅgatayā nityaṃ vikasaccittanāyakam || 19 ||

English

This chain of worldly life is a string of pearls - the countless living beings threaded on the thin thread of craving - shining forever as ruler of the mind, because its body is nothing but pure, clear consciousness.

saṃsārahāramaratiḥ kālavyālavibhūṣaṇamtroṭayāmyahamakrūraṃ vāgurāmiva kesarī || 20 ||

English

Hung with the gem of restlessness and decorated with the serpent of time, I now snap this chain, as easily as a lion snaps the net that trapped it.

English

Such grave troubles of the mind do indeed exist, O great soul - but it is not that they cannot be ended. They end through contact with noble-hearted people, just as the thickest darkness of night ends through the moon.

English

Life is as fragile as water hanging from a bank of clouds scattered by the wind. Pleasures are as unsteady as lightning flashing amid a canopy of clouds. And the pleasures of restless youth are like a swift, rushing current of water. Having quickly understood all this, I have today firmly fixed a seal on my heart, for lasting peace.
