śrīrāma uvāca | anyacca tātā’titatarāmaramye manorame ceha jagatsvarūpe | na kiñcidāyāti tadarthajātaṃ yenātiviśrāntimupaiti cetaḥ || 1 ||

English

Sri Rama said: And another thing, father — in this nature of the world, which is truly full of pain though it looks charming and pleasant to the mind, nothing at all appears in it that could bring the mind to complete and lasting rest.

bālye gate kalpitakelilole manomṛge dāradarīṣu jīrṇe | śarīrake jarjaratāṃ prayāte vidūyate kevalameva lokaḥ || 2 ||

English

When childhood, full of make-believe games, is gone; when the restless mind, like a deer, has grown old lost in the byways of married life; when this small body has become worn and frail — people are left simply consumed with distress.

jarātuṣārābhihatāṃ śarīrasarojinīṃ dūratare vimucya | kṣaṇādgate jīvitacañcarīke janasya saṃsārasaro’vaśuṣkam || 3 ||

English

The body is like a pond full of lotuses, damaged by the frost of old age. Once the bee of life leaves it behind in a single moment, the pond of that person's whole world dries up completely.

yadā yadā pākamupaiti nūnaṃ tadā tadeyaṃ ratimātanoti | jarābharā’nalpanavaprasūnā vijarjarā kāyalatā narāṇām || 4 ||

English

A man's body is like a vine. However heavy it grows with old age, and however many fresh flowers of desire keep blooming on it, the moment it truly ripens into old age, it still reaches out again for pleasure — even while it is completely worn out and falling apart.

tṛṣṇānadī sāratarapravāhagrastākhilānantapadārthajātā | taṭasthasaṃtoṣasuvṛkṣamūlanikāṣadakṣā vahatīha loke || 5 ||

English

The river of craving flows through this world, its powerful current swallowing up every kind of thing without end. And it is very good at one thing: wearing away the roots of the one good tree, contentment, that stands on its banks.

śārīranauścarmnibandhabaddhā bhavāmbudhāvālulitā bhramantī | praloḍyate pañcabhirindriyākhyairadhobhavantī makarairadhīrā || 6 ||

English

The body is like a boat held together by nothing but skin, tossed about and drifting on the ocean of worldly existence. It is churned and battered by five sea-monsters, the five senses, and, unsteady, it keeps sinking lower and lower.

tṛṣṇālatākānanacāriṇo'mī śākhāśataṃ kāmamahīruheṣu | paribhramantaḥ kṣapayanti kālaṃ manomṛgā no phalamāpnuvanti || 7 ||

English

These deer that are our minds roam through the forest of the vine of craving, wandering among a hundred branches on the trees of desire. They simply waste their time going around and around, and in the end, they gain no fruit at all.

kṛcchreṣu dūrāstaviṣādamohāḥ svāsthyeṣu notsiktamanobhirāmāḥ | suduurlabhāḥ saṃprati sundarībhiḥ ranāhatāntaḥkaraṇā mahāntaḥ || 8 ||

English

Truly great people are those who, in hardship, keep grief and confusion far away; who, in comfort, are not charmed by a swollen sense of pride; and whose hearts remain untouched even by beautiful women. Such great people are very hard to find these days.

English

Those who cross an ocean of war, whose waves are rows of charging elephants — to my mind, they are not the real heroes. The real heroes are those who cross this ocean made of the body and the senses, whose waves are made of the restless mind.

akliṣṭaparyantaphalābhirāmā na dṛśyate kasyacideva kācit | kriyādurāśāhatacittavṛttiryāmety viśrāntimupaiti lokaḥ || 10 ||

English

No one can find any single action whose final result is truly delightful and free of trouble, an action not driven by the false hopes that strike down our thinking — an action that, once carried out, could bring a person real rest.

kīrtyā jagaddikkuharaṃ pratāpaiḥ śriyā gṛhaṃ sattvabalena lakṣmīm | ye pūrayantyakṣatadhairyabandhā na te jagatyāṃ sulabhā mahāntaḥ || 11 ||

English

Those who fill every corner of the world with their fame, who fill their homes with glory through their own courage, who win prosperity through the strength of their own true character, and whose patience never breaks — such great people are not easy to find in this world.

apyantarasthaṃ girīśailabhittērvajrālayābhyantarasaṃsthitaṃ vā | sarvaṃ samāyānti sasiddhivēgāḥ sarvāḥ śriyaḥ santatamāpadaśca || 12 ||

English

Whether someone hides deep inside a mountain wall of rock, or stays shut inside a fortress of solid diamond, it makes no difference — every kind of fortune, and every kind of disaster, always finds its way there, arriving as if by magic.

putrāśca dārāśca dhanaṃ ca buddhyā prakalpyate tāta rasāyanābham | sarvaṃ tu tannopakarotyathānte yatrātiramyā viṣamūrchchanaiava || 13 ||

English

Sons, a wife, and wealth — the mind imagines all of these, father, to be like a magic medicine that keeps one young forever. But none of it truly helps in the end, where, however lovely it looked, it turns out to be nothing but a poison that makes a person collapse.

viṣādayukto viṣamāmavasthā mupāgataḥ kāyavayovasāne | bhāvānsmaransvāniha dharmariktān janturjarāvāniha dahyatē'ntaḥ || 14 ||

English

Filled with sorrow, having reached a terrible state as his body's years come to an end, and remembering how his own past life was empty of any real goodness, the old man simply burns with pain inside.

kāmārthadharmāptikṛtāntarābhiḥ kriyābhiḥrādau divasāni nītvā | cetaschcaladbarhiṇapichchalolam viśrāntimāgacchatu kena puṃsaḥ || 15 ||

English

A man spends his early days doing all kinds of things to chase pleasure, wealth, and duty. But his mind stays as restless as a peacock feather stirring in the wind — by what means could such a mind ever come to rest?

purogatairapyanavāptarūpaisstaraṅgiṇītuṅgataraṅgakalpaiḥ | kriyāphalairdaivavaśādupaitairviḍambyate bhinna-rucirhi lokaḥ || 16 ||

English

The results of our actions come to us driven only by fate, and they are like the tall waves of a river — never settling into any fixed shape, even while they stand right in front of us. And so people, with all their different wishes and tastes, are simply made fools of.

imānyamūnīhi vibhāvitāni kāryāṇyaparyantamanoramāṇi | janasya jāyājanarañjanena javājjarāntaṃ jarayanti cetaḥ || 17 ||

English

All these various tasks people plan out for themselves, tasks that seem endlessly delightful, together with the pleasure that comes from a wife and family — all of this quickly wears out a person's mind, right up to the end, to old age.

parṇāni jīrṇāni yathā tarūṇāṃ sametya janmāśu layaṃ prayānti | tathaiva lokāḥ svavivekahīnāḥ sametya gacchanti kuto'pyahobhiḥ || 18 ||

English

Just as the old, dried leaves of a tree grow and then quickly fall away and are gone, in the same way people, without any real understanding of their own, come together for a while and then, as the days pass, disappear — nobody knows where.

itastato dūrataraṃ vihṛtya praviśya gehaṃ divasāvasāne | vivekilokāśrayasādhukarma rikte'hni rātrau ka upaiti nidrām || 19 ||

English

After roaming far and wide from place to place, and then coming home at the end of the day, on a day empty of any good deed that could earn the respect of the wise — who, on that night, could really find sleep?

vidrāvite śatrujane samaste samāgatāyāmabhitaśca lakṣmyām | sevyanta etāni sukhāni yāvattāvatsamāyāti kuto'pi mṛtyuḥ || 20 ||

English

Just when every enemy has been driven off and good fortune has come from every direction, and a person is enjoying these pleasures — right at that very moment, death arrives, from who knows where.

kuto'pi saṃvardhitatuccharūpairbhāvairamībhiḥ kṣaṇanaṣṭadṛṣṭaiḥ | vilōḍyamānā janatā jagatyāṃ navetyupāyātamaho na pātam || 21 ||

English

People in this world are constantly stirred up by trivial things that spring from who knows where and vanish the instant they are seen. And yet, strangely, when such a thing arrives, people welcome it as if it were something wonderful and new, never once seeing it, alas, as a step toward their own downfall.

English

People are like sheep, bound by their own destructive past deeds, and with their own precious lives they become nothing but food for the mouth of Time. By force they only grow fatter and fatter, and even bodily suffering does not stop them from continuing to do so.

ajasramāgacchati satvarevamanārataṃ gacchati satvareva | kuto'pi lolā janatā jagatyāṃ taraṅgamālā kṣaṇabhaṅgureva || 23 ||

English

Endlessly it comes, and quickly; ceaselessly it goes, just as quickly. In this world, restless people, arriving from who knows where, are just like a row of waves that break apart in an instant.

prāṇāpahāraikaparā narāṇāṃ mano manohāritayā haranti | raktacchadāścañcalaṣaṭpadākṣyo viṣadrumālolalatāḥ striyaśca || 24 ||

English

Women, bent only on stealing away men's very life, steal their minds through their own charm — with lips as red as young leaves, eyes as restless as darting bees, they are like the swaying vines of a poison tree.

ito'nyataścopagatā mudhaiva samānasaṅketanibaddhabhāvā | yātrāsamāsaṃgasamā narāṇāṃ kalatramitravyavahāramāyā || 25 ||

English

Coming together from different directions, for no real reason, bound only by some shared, arranged understanding, like travelers who happen to meet on the same journey — that is exactly what a man's dealings with his wife and friends really are: nothing but an illusion.

pradīpaśāntiṣviva bhuktabhūridaśāsvatisnehanibandhanīṣusaṃsāramālāsu calācalāsu na jñāyate tattvamatāttvikīṣu || 26 ||

English

Just as a lamp flickers through many stages before it finally burns out, kept going only by its oil, so this whole chain of worldly life is held together only by deep attachment. It keeps flickering and shifting, never staying still, and people never see its real truth, that it has no real substance at all.

saṃsārasaṃrambhakucakrikeyaṃ prāvṛṭpayobudbudabhaṅgurapiasāvadhānasya janasya buddhau cirasthirapratyayamātanoti || 27 ||

English

This whole spinning wheel of worldly busyness is as fragile as a bubble in the rainy season's water. And yet, in the mind of a careless person, it creates the false idea that it will last a long, steady time.

śobhojjvalā daivavaśādvinaṣṭā guṇāḥ sthitāḥ saṃprati jarjaratveāśvāsanādūrataraṃ prayātā janasya hemanta ivāmbujasya || 28 ||

English

A person's bright, shining beauty is destroyed by fate, and whatever good qualities remain now stand only in a state of decay. All comfort has moved far out of reach. A person's old age is just like winter is to a lotus flower.

punaḥpunardaivavaśādupetya svadehabhāreṇa kṛtopakāraḥvilūyate yatra taruḥ kuṭhārairāśvāsane tatra hi kaḥ prasaṅgaḥ || 29 ||

English

Again and again, driven by fate, a tree that has given service through the very substance of its own trunk still gets cut down by axes. So what room is there for any real comfort or security in this world?

manoramasyāpyatidoṣavṛtterantarviṃghātāya samutthitasyaviṣadrumasyeva janasya saṅgādāsādyate saṃprati mūrcchanaiva || 30 ||

English

A person can be charming to look at, and yet be deeply flawed in nature, someone who has really come only to destroy others from within. Being close to such a person is exactly like being close to a poison tree: all it brings, right away, is a kind of collapse.

kāstā dṛśo yāsu na santi doṣāḥ kāstā diśo yāsu na duḥkhadāhaḥ | kāstāḥ prajā yāsu na bhaṅguratvaṃ kāstāḥ kriyā yāsu na nāma māyā || 31 ||

English

Where can you find a single sight that has no flaw in it at all? Where can you find a single direction where the burning pain of suffering does not reach? Where can you find a single living being that is not fragile and impermanent? Where can you find a single action that is not, in truth, an illusion?

kalpābhidhānakṣaṇajīvino hi kalpaughasaṃkhyākalane viriñcayāḥ | ataḥ kalāśālini kālajāle laghutvadīrghatvadhiyo'pyasatyāḥ || 32 ||

English

Even the very long age called a 'kalpa' is only a single moment in the life of the many creator-gods, and one needs to count them by the flood-load to measure real cosmic time. So in this whole vast net of time, with all of its countless divisions, even our ideas of 'short' and 'long' are not really true.

English

Everywhere, mountains are made of stone, the earth is made of soil, trees are made of wood, and people, whose whole being is tied up with their own strength and effort, are made of flesh. There is nothing at all in this world that is new or free from change.

ālokyate cetanayā'nuviddhā payonubaddho'stanayo nabhaḥ sthāḥ | pṛthagvibhāgena padārthalakṣmyā etajjagannetaradasti kiñcit || 34 ||

English

This whole world, water and everything bound up with it, the sky and everything placed within it, each divided up separately according to its own particular nature, all of this is seen only because consciousness runs through it. This world is all there is; nothing else at all exists beyond it.

camatkṛtiśceha manasvilokacetaścamatkārakarī narāṇām | svapne'pi sādho viṣayaṃ kadācitkeṣāṃcidabhyeti na citrarūpā || 35 ||

English

Good sir, there is a kind of wonder here that would truly astonish the minds of thoughtful people, but that wonder in its full and marvelous form never comes within anyone's reach, not even once, and not even in a dream.

adyāpi yāte'pi ca kalpanāyā ākāśavallīphalavanmahattve | udeti no lobhalavāhatānāmudāravṛttāntamayī kathaiva || 36 ||

English

Even today, and even in times long past, a truly noble story, one full of great and worthy deeds, never comes about for people who are struck by even a trace of greed. Such greatness is about as real as fruit growing on a vine in the empty sky.

ādātumicchanpadamuttamānāṃ svacetasaivāpahato'dya lokaḥ | patatyashankam pashuradrikūṭādānīlavallīphalavāñchayaiva || 37 ||

English

Wanting to reach the rank of the greatest people, a person today is ruined by nothing but his own mind. He falls without any sense of danger, just like an animal that falls off a mountain peak, driven only by its desire for the fruit of a green vine hanging over the edge.

avāntaranyastanirarthakāṃśacchāyālatāpatraphalaprasūnāḥ | śarīra eva kṣatasaṃpadaśca śvabhradrumā adyatanā narāśca || 38 ||

English

A tree growing on the very edge of a pit may still have its shade, its climbing vines, its leaves, fruit, and flowers, but all of that is placed there pointlessly, since its own trunk's strength is already damaged. People today are exactly the same: whatever they gain, in their very own body their real strength is already broken.

English

Sometimes people move through places that are soft and pleasant, and sometimes through places that are hard and rough, wandering constantly through one region after another, just like black antelope moving through patches of land at the edge of a forest.

English

Whose mind, except perhaps a corpse's, is not left amazed by the ever-new workings of fate, day after day, sometimes terrifying, sometimes delightful, utterly confused in how they turn out, their rise cut short by bitter results in the end?

English

A person caught up in desire, busy with all kinds of low and worthless pursuits, is easy enough to find. But a truly good person is hard to find in this world today, even in a dream. Every action is tied to suffering, never really free of trouble, always troubled somehow. I do not even know how this thing we call a lifetime is to be gotten through.
