Sri Rama said: Great sage, since time and the other such forces work like this, tell me — what standing can someone like me have in this thing called the world?
We stand here like people already sold off — sold to fate and its kind. Sage, we are fooled by the tricks of this world, like deer in the forest.
This Time follows the ways of the cruel; its mouth is always open to swallow. Without pause, it throws the people of the world into an ocean of misfortune.
This Necessity is a woman devoted to her own rule; she is fickle by her feminine nature and always intent on what is destined to happen. She robs a person of his steadiness.
Death, cruel in its ways, drags even an ageless body into old age, and it ceaselessly swallows the whole heap of creatures, like a snake swallowing air.
Yama, the merciless king of kings, has no pity at all for those in pain. And people who are truly kind to every living being have become very rare.
kalākalaṅkito loko bandhavo bhavabandhanam| bhogā bhavamahārogāstṛṣṇāśca mṛgatṛṣṇikāḥ || 10 ||
This world is covered in flaws. Relatives are only one more rope tying us to this life. Pleasures are like the great diseases of worldly life, and our cravings are like a mirage.
Our own senses are truly our enemies; even truth has turned into falsehood. The self strikes itself by itself, and the mind becomes its own enemy, attacked by the mind.
Pride leads only to disgrace, the mind has become very feeble, actions bring nothing but bad results, and even our amusements have narrowed down to nothing but women.
Women, who seem full of everything we desire and once seemed truly wonderful, are flawed; in truth they now carry the flag of every fault. And all the flavors of life have turned tasteless.
What is real is taken for unreal, and the mind is handed over to pride. Everything that exists is shot through with its own coming end, yet no one grasps where existence truly leads.
rajoguṇahatā dṛṣṭistamaḥ saṃparivardhate na cādhigamyate sattvaṃ tattvamatyantadūrataḥ || 16 ||
Vision is ruined by restless passion, and dark ignorance keeps growing. Purity and goodness are never reached — the truth stays completely out of reach.
What seemed stable has become unstable, and death always stands ready to arrive. Steadiness has turned into helplessness, and our attachment always fastens on things that are not even real.
The mind grows dull and clouded through sluggishness. The body is bent only on decline. Old age burns in the body like fire, and the results of our bad deeds keep flashing up again and again.
The mind grows completely confused within, and joy has moved far away. Bright, warm compassion never rises, while meanness comes rushing in from every side.
Steadiness turns into restlessness, and people fall prey to one calamity after another. It is easy to fall in with bad people, but rare to meet good ones.
Everything that comes must also go, yet our thinking about things is what ties us to this existence. And the whole endless chain of living beings is constantly being swept away somewhere, without end.
diśo'pi hi na dṛśyante deśo'pyanyāpadeśabhāk | śailā api viśīryante kaivāsthā mādṛśe jane || 23 ||
Even the directions disappear from sight, even a place turns into something else and takes another name, even mountains crumble away — so what firm ground can there be for someone like me?
Even the sky is being eaten away, existence and all; the world too is wasting away; even the earth is losing its steadiness — so what firm ground can there be for someone like me?
dānavā api dīryante dhruvo'pyadhruvajīvitaḥ | amarā api māryante kaivāsthā mādṛśe jane || 26 ||
Even demons are torn to pieces, even the pole star, which is called fixed, does not have a fixed life, even the immortals are killed — so what firm ground can there be for someone like me?
śakro'pyākramyate vakrairyamo'pi hi niyamyate | vāyurapyetyavāyutvaṃ kaivāsthā mādṛśe jane || 27 ||
Even Indra, the king of the gods, is attacked by crooked enemies; even Yama, the god of death, is himself held in check; even the wind stops being wind — so what firm ground can there be for someone like me?
Even the moon dissolves into empty sky, even the sun breaks into pieces, even fire itself gets drowned out — so what firm ground can there be for someone like me?
Even Brahma, the highest and most steadfast of all, is swept away; even Hara, though said to be unborn, is not spared; even Bhava turns into nothing — so what firm ground can there be for someone like me?
There is something by which even Time itself is brought to an end, and Necessity too is swept away; even endless space dissolves away — so what firm ground can there be for someone like me?
By something whose real nature cannot be heard, cannot be described in words, and cannot be seen — something whose very shape is unknown, and which spreads only confusion — the whole world is being made a fool of by this unknown power.
The sun, together with its chariot and horses, travels among rocks, mountains, and cliffs — driven on forever, utterly without control of its own, as helpless as a stone lying in the forest.
The round earth, home to hosts of gods and demons living inside it, is wrapped all around by the circle of the stars, the way a ripe walnut is wrapped in its shell.
divi devā bhuvi narāḥ pātāleṣu ca bhoginaḥ| kalpitāḥ kalpamātreṇa nīyante jarjarāṃ daśām || 35 ||
Gods in heaven, men on earth, serpents in the world below — all of them, though seemingly real, are formed by nothing more than imagination, and all of them are driven, in time, into a broken, worn-out state.
And Desire, who won his own strength by warring even against the Lord of the world, still moves without any restraint, overrunning the whole world and prancing about freely.
Spring is like an elephant in rut — its excitement pours down as showers of flowers, filling every direction with fragrance, and it drives the mind toward restlessness.
paropakārakāriṇyā parārtiparitaptyā| buddha eva sukhī manye svātmaśītalayā dhiyā || 39 ||
I think only a truly wise person is happy — one whose mind helps others, feels for others' pain as if it burned within, yet stays cool and steady in the self.
Who could ever count the waves in the ocean of life — waves that rise only to be destroyed, and fall into the fire that burns beneath the sea, the fire of time?
sarva eva narā mohāddurāśāpāśapāśinaḥ | doṣagulmakasāraṅgā viśīrṇā janmajaṅgale | saṃkṣīyate jagati janmaparamparāsu lokasya tairiha kukarmabhirāyuretat || 41 ||
All men, out of delusion, are tied up by the rope of false hope; like deer caught in the thorny bushes of their own faults, they lie scattered through the jungle of repeated birth. And in this world, life after life, this span of life that people have is worn away by their own bad deeds.
ākāśapādapalatākṛtapāśakalpaṃ yeṣāṃ phalaṃ nahi vicāravido’pi vidmaḥ || 42 ||
Even we, who know how to think things through, do not understand actions whose result is no more real than a rope woven from the creeper of a tree that grows in the sky.
'Today is a festival, this is the right season, here is a journey, these are my own relatives, this is real pleasure and joy' — thinking such empty thoughts, weaving one useless idea after another, with a mind that is restless and weak, a person in this world simply slips away and is gone.
