श्रीराम उवाच अत्रैव दुर्विलासानां चूडमणिरिहापरः | करोत्यत्तीति लोकेऽस्मिन्दैवं कालश्च कथ्यते || १ ||

śrīrāma uvāca atraiva durvilāsānāṃ cūḍamaṇirihāparaḥ | karotyattīti loke'smindaivaṃ kālaśca kathyate || 1 ||

English

Sri Rama said: Right here is another one - the worst of all troublemakers. Since he both makes things happen and swallows them back up, people in this world call him both Fate and Time.

हिन्दी

श्रीराम ने कहा - यहाँ एक और है, जो बुरे कामों में सबसे आगे है। चूँकि वह चीज़ों को बनाता भी है और निगल भी जाता है, इसलिए इस दुनिया में उसे भाग्य और काल दोनों कहा जाता है।

क्रियामात्रादृते यस्य स्वपरिस्पन्दरूपिणः | नान्यदालक्ष्यते रूपं न कर्म न समीहितम् || २ ||

kriyāmātrādṛte yasya svaparispandarūpiṇaḥ | nānyadālakṣyate rūpaṃ na karma na samīhitam || 2 ||

English

Apart from what he actually does, he has no form that can be seen. His very nature is simply movement. No shape of his, no deed of his, no wish of his can be seen except through what happens.

जो वह करता है, उसके अलावा उसका कोई और रूप नहीं दिखता। उसका असली स्वरूप बस हलचल ही है। जो होता है उसके सिवा न उसका कोई आकार दिखता है, न उसका कोई काम, न उसकी कोई इच्छा।

तेनेयमखिला भूतसंततिः परिपेलवा | तापेन हिममालेव नीता विधुरतां भृशम् || ३ ||

teneyamakhilā bhūtasaṃtatiḥ paripelavā | tāpena himamāleva nītā vidhuratāṃ bhṛśam || 3 ||

English

Because of him, all these fragile living beings have been driven into terrible distress - like a bank of snow melting away helplessly in the heat.

हिन्दी

उसी के कारण ये सारे नाज़ुक जीव बहुत बड़ी मुसीबत में पड़ गए हैं - जैसे गर्मी से बर्फ की परत बेबस होकर पिघल जाती है।

यदिदं दृश्यते किंचिज्जगदाभोगि मण्डलम् | तत्तस्य नर्तनागारमिहासावतिनृत्यति || ४ ||

yadidaṃ dṛśyate kiṃcidjagadābhogi maṇḍalam | tattasya nartanāgāramihāsāvatinṛtyati || 4 ||

English

This whole wide, spread-out world that we see is nothing but his dance hall, and here he dances on and on without stopping.

हिन्दी

यह जो चौड़ा और फैला हुआ संसार दिखाई देता है, वह असल में उसका नाचघर है, और यहाँ वह लगातार बिना रुके नाचता रहता है।

तृतीयं च कृतान्तेति नाम बिभ्रत्सुदारुणम् | कापालिकवपुर्मत्तं दैवं जगति नृत्यति || ५ ||

tṛtīyaṃ ca kṛtānteti nāma bibhratsudāruṇam | kāpālikavapurmattaṃ daivaṃ jagati nṛtyati || 5 ||

English

He carries yet a third name too, the most terrible one - Kritanta, the Ender. This same Fate, wild and drunk with power, dances through the world wearing the body of a skull-carrying ascetic.

हिन्दी

उसका एक तीसरा नाम भी है, सबसे भयानक नाम - कृतान्त, यानी अंत करने वाला। यही भाग्य, नशे में मस्त होकर, खोपड़ियाँ धारण करने वाले तांत्रिक साधु जैसा शरीर लेकर इस संसार में नाचता है।

नृत्यतो हि कृतान्तस्य नितान्तमिव रागिणः| नित्यं नियतिकान्तायां मुने परमकामिता || ६ ||

nṛtyato hi kṛtāntasya nitāntamiva rāgiṇaḥ| nityaṃ niyatikāntāyāṃ mune paramakāmitā || 6 ||

English

Sage, this dancing Kritanta seems utterly passionate - his greatest desire is always for his beloved, Niyati.

हिन्दी

हे मुनि, यह नाचता हुआ कृतान्त मानो पूरी तरह आसक्त जान पड़ता है - उसकी सबसे बड़ी चाहत हमेशा अपनी प्रिया नियति के लिए ही रहती है।

शेषः शशिकलाशुभ्रो गङ्गावाहश्च तौ त्रिधा| उपवीते अवीते च उभौ संसारवक्षसि || ७ ||

śeṣaḥ śaśikalāśubhro gaṅgāvāhaśca tau tridhā| upavīte avīte ca ubhau saṃsāravakṣasi || 7 ||

English

The serpent Shesha, white as a sliver of the moon, and the flowing river Ganga - together, in three strands, they hang like a sacred thread across the chest of this world.

हिन्दी

शेष नाग, जो चाँद की एक कला जैसा सफ़ेद है, और गंगा की धारा - ये दोनों मिलकर, तीन लड़ों में, इस संसार की छाती पर जनेऊ की तरह लटकते हैं।

चन्द्रार्कमण्डले हेमकटकौ करमूलयोः| लीलासरसिजं हस्ते ब्रह्मन्ब्रह्माण्डकर्णिका || ८ ||

candrārkamaṇḍale hemakaṭakau karamūlayoḥ| līlāsarasijaṃ hastē brahmanbrahmāṇḍakarṇikā || 8 ||

English

The discs of the moon and the sun are his two golden bracelets at the wrists; in his hand he holds a lotus for play, and, Brahmin, the whole universe is the seed pod at its centre.

हिन्दी

चाँद और सूरज के गोले उसकी दोनों कलाइयों पर सोने के कंगन हैं; उसके हाथ में खेलने के लिए एक कमल है, और हे ब्राह्मण, यह पूरा ब्रह्मांड उस कमल के बीचोंबीच का बीज-कोश है।

ताराबिन्दुचितं लोलपुष्करावर्तपल्लवम्| एकार्णवपयोधौ तमेकमम्बरमम्बरम् || ९ ||

tārābinducitaṃ lolapuṣkarāvartapallavam| ekārṇavapayodhau tamekamambaramambaram || 9 ||

English

That single sky - sprinkled with stars, fringed with swirling clouds, stretched over the one ocean of water at the end of the world - that alone is his garment.

हिन्दी

वह एक अकेला आकाश - जो तारों से जड़ा है, घूमते हुए बादलों से किनारों पर सजा है, और प्रलय के उस एक सागर के ऊपर फैला है - वही उसका इकलौता वस्त्र है।

एवंरूपस्य तस्याग्रे नियतिर्नित्यकामिनी| अनस्तमितसंरम्भमारम्भैः परिनृत्यति || १० ||

evaṃrūpasya tasyāgre niyatirnityakāminī| anastamitasaṃrambhamārambhaiḥ parinṛtyati || 10 ||

English

In front of him, formed like this, Niyati - his eternal beloved - dances round and round, her energy never fading, through everything she sets going.

हिन्दी

इस रूप वाले उसके सामने, उसकी सदा की प्रिया नियति, अपनी हर पहल के ज़रिए, बिना थके, लगातार घूम-घूम कर नाचती रहती है।

तस्या नर्तनलोलाया जगन्मण्डपकोटरे | अरुद्धस्पन्दरूपाया आगमापायचञ्चुरे || ११ ||

tasyā nartanalolāyā jagannaṇḍapakoṭare | aruddhaspandarūpāyā āgamāpāyacañcure || 11 ||

English

She dances restlessly inside the hollow hall that is this world; her form never stops quivering, and she keeps flitting back and forth between coming and going.

हिन्दी

वह इस संसार रूपी सभा-मंडप की खोखली जगह में बेचैनी से नाचती रहती है; उसका रूप कभी काँपना नहीं छोड़ता, और वह आने और जाने के बीच लगातार इधर-उधर डोलती रहती है।

चारुभूषणमङ्गेषु देवलोकान्तरावली | आपातालं नभोलम्बं कबरीमण्डलं बृहत् || १२ ||

cārubhūṣaṇamaṅgeṣu devalokāntarāvalī | āpātālaṃ nabholambaṃ kabarīmaṇḍalaṃ bṛhat || 12 ||

English

The gaps between the worlds of the gods are the lovely ornaments on her limbs, and her great mass of hair hangs down from the sky all the way to the underworld.

हिन्दी

देवताओं के लोकों के बीच की जो दूरियाँ हैं, वही उसके अंगों पर सुंदर गहनों की तरह हैं; और उसके बालों का विशाल जूड़ा आकाश से लेकर पाताल तक लटकता है।

नरकाली च मञ्जीरमाला कलकलोज्ज्वला | प्रोता दुष्कृतसूत्रेण पातालचरणे स्थिता || १३ ||

narakālī ca mañjīramālā kalakalojjvalā | protā duṣkṛtasūtreṇa pātālacaraṇe sthitā || 13 ||

English

The long row of hells is her anklet, jingling brightly, strung on a thread made of wicked deeds, resting at her foot down in the underworld.

हिन्दी

नरकों की पूरी कतार उसकी पायल है, जो खनकती हुई चमकती है, बुरे कर्मों के धागे में पिरोई गई है, और पाताल में उसके पैर पर टिकी है।

कस्तूरिकातिलककं क्रियासंख्योपकल्पितम् | चित्रितं चित्रगुप्तेन यमे वदनपट्टके || १४ ||

kastūrikātilakakaṃ kriyāsaṃkhyopakalpitam | citritaṃ citraguptena yame vadanapaṭṭake || 14 ||

English

The musk mark on her forehead is made from the tally of everyone's deeds - the very same record that Chitragupta paints on Yama's brow.

हिन्दी

उसके माथे का कस्तूरी का तिलक लोगों के कर्मों के हिसाब से बना है - वही हिसाब जिसे चित्रगुप्त यमराज के माथे पर लिखते हैं।

कालास्यं समुपादाय कल्पान्तेषु किलाकुला | नृत्यत्येषा पुनर्देवी स्फुटच्छैलघनारवम् || १५ ||

kālāsyaṃ samupādāya kalpānteṣu kilākulā | nṛtyaty eṣā punardeveī sphuṭacchailaghanāravam || 15 ||

English

Grasping the very face of Time, wild with frenzy, at the end of every age this goddess dances again, roaring like mountains splitting apart and thunderclouds crashing.

हिन्दी

काल के मुख को ही थामे हुए, उन्मत्त होकर, हर युग के अंत में यह देवी फिर से नाचती है, ऐसी गर्जना के साथ जैसे पहाड़ फट रहे हों और घने बादल गरज रहे हों।

पश्चात्प्रालम्बविभ्रान्तकौमारभृतबर्हिभिः | नेत्रत्रयवृहद्रन्ध्रभूरिभाङ्कारभीषणैः || १६ ||

paścātprālambavibhrāntakaumārabhṛtabarhibhiḥ | netratrayavṛhadrandhrabhūribhāṅkārabhīṣaṇaiḥ || 16 ||

English

Behind her, the peacock feathers worn by Kartikeya sway and hang loose, and a huge roar booms out from the great eye sockets of Shiva, the three-eyed god.

हिन्दी

उसके पीछे कार्तिकेय के धारण किए हुए मोरपंख लहराते और लटकते रहते हैं, और तीन आँखों वाले शिव की बड़ी आँखों के गड्ढों से एक भारी गर्जना गूंजती है।

लम्बलोलजटाचन्द्रविकीर्णहरमूर्धभिः | उच्चरच्चारुमन्दारगौरीकबरचामरैः || १७ ||

lambalolajaṭācandravikīrṇaharamūrdhabhiḥ | uccaraccārumandāragaurīkabaracāmaraiḥ || 17 ||

English

The moon lies scattered among the loose, hanging matted locks on Shiva's head, and beautiful mandara flowers rise up like fly whisks from Gauri's braided hair.

हिन्दी

शिव के सिर की लटकती और बिखरी हुई जटाओं में चाँद बिखरा पड़ा है, और गौरी की गुँथी हुई चोटी से सुंदर मंदार के फूल चंवर की तरह ऊपर उठते हैं।

उत्ताण्डवाचलाकारभैरवोदरतुम्बकैः | रणत्सशतरन्ध्रेन्द्रदेहभिक्षाकपालकैः || १८ ||

uttāṇḍavācalākārabhairavodaratumbakaiḥ | raṇatsashatarandhrendradehabhikṣākapālakaiḥ || 18 ||

English

Mountain-shaped drums boom from Bhairava's belly in his wild dance, and skull begging-bowls, made from Indra's body full of a hundred holes, ring out loudly.

हिन्दी

भैरव के जंगली नृत्य में उनके पेट से पहाड़ जैसे बड़े ढोल गूंजते हैं, और सैकड़ों छिद्रों वाले इंद्र के शरीर से बने खोपड़ी के भिक्षा-पात्र ज़ोर से बजते हैं।

शुष्कशारीरखट्वाङ्गभरैरापूरिताम्बरम् | भीषयत्यात्मनात्मानं सर्वसंहारकारिणी || १९ ||

śuṣkaśārīrakhaṭvāṅgabharairāpūritāmbaram | bhīṣayatyātmanātmānaṃ sarvasaṃhārakāriṇī || 19 ||

English

Clubs topped with skulls, made from dried-up dead bodies, fill the whole sky - and she, the one who destroys everything, ends up frightening even herself.

हिन्दी

सूखी हुई लाशों से बनी खोपड़ी वाली गदाएँ पूरे आकाश को भर देती हैं - और वह, जो सबका नाश करने वाली है, खुद अपने आप से ही डर जाती है।

विश्वरूपशिरश्चक्रचारुपुष्करमालया | ताण्डवेषु विवल्गन्त्या महाकल्पेषु राजते || २० ||

viśvarūpaśiraścakracārupuṣkaramālayā | tāṇḍaveṣu vivalgantyā mahākalpeṣu rājate || 20 ||

English

Wearing a garland made from a whole circle of heads - the heads of every being in the universe - she leaps wildly in her dance through the great ages, and shines in her terrible glory.

हिन्दी

पूरे ब्रह्मांड के सभी प्राणियों के सिरों की एक पूरी माला पहनकर, वह महाकल्पों में अपने भयंकर नृत्य में उछलती-कूदती है, और अपनी भयानक शोभा से चमकती है।

प्रमत्तपुष्करावर्तडमरोड्डामरारवैः| तस्याः किल पलायन्ते कल्पान्ते तुम्बुरादयः || २१ ||

pramattapuṣkarāvartḍamaroḍḍāmarāravaiḥ| tasyāḥ kila palāyante kalpānte tumburādayaḥ || 21 ||

English

The wild, unrestrained roar of her frenzied, whirling clouds and her small drum is so terrible that, at the end of the age, even the heavenly musician Tumburu and his companions run away in fear.

हिन्दी

उसके उन्मत्त और घूमते हुए बादलों और उसके डमरू की बेकाबू गर्जना इतनी भयानक है कि युग के अंत में स्वर्ग के गायक तुंबुरु और उसके साथी भी डरकर भाग जाते हैं।

नृत्यतोऽन्तः कृतान्तस्य चन्द्रमण्डलभासिनः| तारकाचन्द्रिकाचारुव्योमपिच्छावचूलिनः || २२ ||

nṛtyato'ntaḥ kṛtāntasya candramanḍalabhāsinaḥ| tārakācandrikācāruvyomapicchāvacūlinaḥ || 22 ||

English

In the middle of his dance, Kritanta shines like the orb of the moon, and on his head he wears the beautiful star-lit sky itself like a peacock-feather crest.

हिन्दी

अपने नृत्य के बीच, कृतान्त चाँद के गोले जैसा चमकता है, और अपने सिर पर वह तारों और चाँदनी से सजे सुंदर आकाश को ही मोरपंख के मुकुट की तरह धारण करता है।

एकस्मिञ्छ्रवणे दीप्ता हिमवानस्थिमुद्रिका| अपरे च महामेरुः कान्ता काञ्चनकर्णिका || २३ ||

ekasmiñchravaṇe dīptā himavānasthimudrikā| apare ca mahāmeruḥ kāntā kāñcanakarṇikā || 23 ||

English

In one ear, gleaming, the Himalaya mountain hangs as his bone earring; in the other ear, the great mountain Meru is his beautiful golden earring.

हिन्दी

एक कान में चमकता हुआ हिमालय पर्वत उसकी हड्डी की बाली बना है; और दूसरे कान में विशाल मेरु पर्वत उसकी सुंदर सोने की बाली बना है।

अत्रैव कुण्डले लोले चन्द्रार्कौ गण्डमण्डले| लोकालोकाचलश्रेणी सर्वतः कटिमेखला || २४ ||

atraiva kuṇḍale lole candrārkau gaṇḍamaṇḍale| lokālokācalaśreṇī sarvataḥ kaṭimekhalā || 24 ||

English

Here too, the moon and the sun swing on his cheeks like two earrings, and the ring of mountains called Lokaloka, running all the way around, is his waistband.

हिन्दी

यहाँ भी, चाँद और सूरज उसके गालों पर झूलती हुई दो बालियों की तरह हैं, और चारों ओर घेरा बनाने वाली लोकालोक पर्वत-श्रृंखला उसकी कमरबंद है।

इतश्चेतश्च गच्छन्ती विद्युद्वलयकर्णिका| अनिलान्दोलिता भाति नीरदांशुकपट्टिका || २५ ||

itaścetśca gacchantī vidyudvalayakarṇikā| anilāndolitā bhāti nīradāṃśukapaṭṭikā || 25 ||

English

Moving back and forth, a flashing ring of lightning is his ear pendant, and, swayed by the wind, a sash made of clouds shines around him.

हिन्दी

इधर-उधर घूमती हुई बिजली की एक चमकती हुई रेखा उसकी कान की बाली है, और हवा से हिलता हुआ बादलों का बना एक दुपट्टा उस पर चमकता है।

मुसलैः पट्टिशैः प्रासैः शूलैस्तोमरमुद्गरैः | तीक्ष्णैः क्षीणजगद्वान्तकृतान्तैरिव संभृतैः || २६ ||

musalaiḥ paṭṭiśaiḥ prāsaiḥ śūlais tomaramudgaraiḥ | tīkṣṇaiḥ kṣīṇajagadvāntakṛtāntairiva saṃbhṛtaiḥ || 26 ||

English

His weapons are clubs, halberds, javelins, spikes, lances, and hammers - all sharp, as if spat out by Death himself from this worn-out, exhausted world.

हिन्दी

उसके हथियार हैं गदाएँ, फरसे, भाले, बर्छे, सांगें और हथौड़े - सब तेज़ और नुकीले, मानो थके-हारे इस संसार से खुद मौत ने इन्हें उगल दिया हो।

संसारबन्धनादीर्घे पाशे कालकरच्युते | शेषभोगमहासूत्रप्रोते मालास्य शोभते || २७ ||

saṃsārabandhanādīrghe pāśe kālakaracyute | śeṣabhogamahāsūtraprote mālāsya śobhate || 27 ||

English

His garland hangs shining on a noose longer than the very bondage of this world, a noose that dangles from Time's own hand, strung upon the great cord formed by the coiled body of the serpent Shesha.

हिन्दी

उसकी माला एक ऐसे फंदे पर चमकती है जो इस संसार के बंधन से भी लंबा है, जो खुद काल के हाथ से लटका हुआ है, और जो शेषनाग की कुंडली रूपी विशाल डोरी में पिरोया गया है।

जीवोल्लसन्मकरिकारत्नतेजोभिरुज्ज्वला | सप्ताब्धिकङ्कणश्रेणी भुजयोरस्य भूषणम् || २८ ||

jīvollasanmakarikāratnatejobhirujjvalā | saptābdhikaṅkaṇaśreṇī bhujayorasya bhūṣaṇam || 28 ||

English

Glowing with the brightness of jewels shaped like living sea creatures, a row of bracelets made from the seven oceans decorates his two arms.

हिन्दी

जीवित समुद्री जीवों के आकार वाले रत्नों की चमक से जगमगाती हुई, सातों समुद्रों से बनी कंगनों की एक कतार उसकी दोनों भुजाओं का आभूषण है।

व्यवहारमहावर्ता सुखदुःखपरम्परा | रजःपूर्णतमःश्यामा रोमाली तस्य राजते || २९ ||

vyavahāramahāvartā sukhaduḥkhaparamparā | rajaḥpūrṇatamaḥśyāmā romālī tasya rājate || 29 ||

English

His body hair shines like a dark line - full of great whirlpools of everyday dealings, an endless chain of pleasure and pain, as dark as thick blackness full of dust.

हिन्दी

उसके शरीर पर बालों की रेखा चमकती है - जो रोज़मर्रा के व्यवहार के बड़े-बड़े भँवरों से भरी है, सुख-दुख की एक लगातार कड़ी है, और धूल से भरे घने अंधेरे जैसी काली है।

एवंप्रायः स कल्पान्ते कृतान्तस्ताण्डवोद्भवाम् | उपसंहृत्य नृत्येहां सृष्ट्वा सह महेश्वरम् || ३० ||

evaṃprāyaḥ sa kalpānte kṛtāntastāṇḍavodbhavām | upasaṃhṛtya nṛtyehāṃ sṛṣṭvā saha maheśvaram || 30 ||

English

In this way, at the end of the age, Kritanta calms down the wild dancing he had stirred up, and, together with the great lord Shiva, brings about creation once more.

इस तरह, हर युग के अंत में, कृतान्त अपने उठाए हुए उग्र नृत्य को शांत कर देता है, और महान देव शिव के साथ मिलकर फिर से सृष्टि की रचना करता है।

पुनर्लास्यमयीं नृत्यलीलां सर्गस्वरूपिणीम् | तनोतीमां जराशोकदुःखाभिभवभूषिताम् || ३१ ||

punarlāsyamayīṃ nṛtyalīlāṃ sargasvarūpiṇīm | tanotīmāṃ jarāśokaduḥkhābhibhavabhūṣitām || 31 ||

English

Then he spreads out again this soft, flowing dance of creation - a dance decorated with old age, grief, pain, and ruin.

हिन्दी

फिर वह फिर से सृजन के इस कोमल, बहते हुए नृत्य को फैलाता है - एक ऐसा नृत्य जो बुढ़ापे, शोक, दुख और विनाश से सजा हुआ है।

भूयः करोति भुवनानि वनान्तराणि लोकान्तराणि जनजालककल्पनां च | आचारचारुकलनामचलां चलां च पङ्काद्यथार्भकजनो रचनामखिन्नः || ३२ ||

bhūyaḥ karoti bhuvanāni vanāntarāṇi lokāntarāṇi janajālakakalpanāṃ ca | ācāracārukalanāmacalāṃ calāṃ ca paṅkādyathārbhakajano racanāmakhinnaḥ || 32 ||

English

Again and again he makes new worlds - other forests, other regions, and whole webs of imagined people; he makes both the things that stand still and the things that move, each with its own patterns of behaviour - and he never tires of it, just as a child never tires of shaping little things out of mud.

वह बार-बार नई दुनियाएँ बनाता है - जंगल, लोक, और लोगों के पूरे झुंड की कल्पना; वह स्थिर चीज़ें भी बनाता है और चलने वाली चीज़ें भी, हर एक को अपने-अपने सुंदर आचार-व्यवहार के ढंग के साथ - और वह इससे कभी नहीं थकता, ठीक वैसे ही जैसे एक बच्चा मिट्टी से खिलौने बनाते हुए कभी नहीं थकता।
