श्रीराम उवाचअस्योड्डामरलीलस्य दूरास्तसकलापदःसंसारे राजपुत्रस्य कालस्याकलितौजसः || १ ||

śrīrāma uvācaasyoḍḍāmaralīlasya dūrāstasakalāpadaḥsaṃsāre rājaputrasya kālasyākalitaujasaḥ || 1 ||

English

Sri Rama said: Now hear about this Time - the prince of this world, whose play knows no limit, who throws every misfortune far and wide, and whose strength cannot be measured.

हिन्दी

श्रीराम ने कहा - अब सुनो इस काल के बारे में, जो इस संसार का राजकुमार है, जिसका खेल किसी सीमा को नहीं मानता, जो हर मुसीबत को दूर-दूर तक फेंक देता है, और जिसकी ताकत नापी नहीं जा सकती।

अस्यैवाचरतो दीनैर्मुग्धैर्भूतमृगब्रजैःआखेटकं जर्जरिते जगज्जङ्गलजालके || २ ||

asyaivācarato dīnairmugdhairbhūtamṛgabrajaiḥākheṭakaṃ jarjarite jagajjaṅgalajālake || 2 ||

English

This same Time wanders about hunting, treating the poor, bewildered crowds of living beings as his deer, in this old, broken-down, tangled forest of a world.

हिन्दी

यही काल शिकार करता हुआ घूमता है; वह बेचारे और भोले-भाले प्राणियों की भीड़ को अपना हिरण मानता है, इस पुराने, टूटे-फूटे और उलझे हुए जंगल जैसे संसार में।

एकदेशोल्लसच्चारुवडवानलपङ्कजाक्रीडापुष्करिणी रम्या कल्पकालमहार्णवः || ३ ||

ekadeśollasaccāruvaḍavānalapaṅkajākrīḍāpuṣkariṇī ramyā kalpakālamahārṇavaḥ || 3 ||

English

The great ocean that rises at the end of an age is his lovely playing pool, and in one corner of it the undersea fire glows like a beautiful lotus.

हिन्दी

प्रलय के समय उठने वाला वह विशाल सागर उसका सुंदर खेलने-कूदने का तालाब है, और उसके एक कोने में समुद्र के भीतर जलने वाली आग एक सुंदर कमल की तरह चमकती है।

कटुतिक्ताम्लभूताद्यैः सदधिक्षीरसागरैःतैरेव तैः पर्युषितैर्जगद्भिः कल्ववर्तनम् || ४ ||

kaṭutiktāmlabhūtādyaiḥ sadadhikṣīrasāgaraiḥtaireva taiḥ paryuṣitairjagadbhiḥ kalvavartanam || 4 ||

English

The true oceans of milk and curd, together with things bitter, sharp, and sour, are turned stale by these very worlds and become his tainted food.

हिन्दी

दूध और दही के असली सागर, तीखी, कड़वी और खट्टी चीज़ों के साथ, इन्हीं दुनियाओं की वजह से बासी हो जाते हैं और उसका गंदा खाना बन जाते हैं।

चण्डी चतुरसंचारा सर्वमातृगणान्वितासंसारवनविन्यस्ता व्याघ्री भूतौघघातिनी || ५ ||

caṇḍī caturasaṃcārā sarvamātṛgaṇānvitāsaṃsāravanavinyastā vyāghrī bhūtaughaghātinī || 5 ||

English

Chandi, moving swiftly and cleverly, joined by all the Mother goddesses, is set loose in the forest of this world as a tigress that kills whole herds of living beings.

हिन्दी

चण्डी, जो चतुराई से हर तरफ घूमती है और सभी मातृदेवियों के साथ है, इस संसार रूपी जंगल में एक ऐसी बाघिन बनकर छोड़ी गई है जो प्राणियों के पूरे झुंड को मार डालती है।

ज्ञध्वी करतले ज्ञथ्वी पानपात्री रसान्विता | कमलोत्पलकह्लारलोलजालकमालिता || ६ ||

jñadhvī karatale jñathvī pānapātrī rasānvitā | kamalotpalakahlāralolajālakamālitā || 6 ||

English

In her hand she holds a cup filled with drink, and she wears a garland of swaying lotuses - pink lotuses, blue lotuses, and white water lilies.

हिन्दी

उसके हाथ में रस से भरा एक पात्र है, और उसने झूलते हुए कमल, नीलकमल और सफेद कुमुद के फूलों की माला पहनी है।

विरावी विकटास्फोटो नृसिंहो भुजपञ्जरे | सटाविकटपीनांसः कृतः क्रीडाशकुन्तकः || ७ ||

virāvī vikaṭāsphoṭo nṛsiṃho bhujapañjare | saṭāvikatapīnāṃsaḥ kṛtaḥ krīḍāśakuntakaḥ || 7 ||

English

The Man-Lion Narasimha - roaring, clapping his hands fiercely, with a wild mane and thick shoulders - is turned into nothing more than a toy bird inside the cage of his arms.

हिन्दी

नृसिंह भगवान, जो दहाड़ते हैं और ज़ोर से हाथ पटकते हैं, जिनका अयाल डरावना और कंधे मोटे हैं, वे भी उसकी भुजाओं के पिंजरे में एक खिलौना पक्षी मात्र बना दिए गए हैं।

अलाबुवीणामधुरः शरद्व्योमलसच्छविः | देवः किल महाकालो लीलाकोकिलबालकः || ८ ||

alābuvīṇāmadhuraḥ śaradvyomalasacchaviḥ | devaḥ kila mahākālo līlākokilabālakaḥ || 8 ||

English

The great god Mahakala - as sweet-sounding as a gourd lute, as bright as the autumn sky - is, in truth, nothing but a playful young cuckoo.

हिन्दी

महान देव महाकाल - जो तूम्बे की वीणा जैसे मीठे हैं और शरद ऋतु के आकाश जैसे चमकीले हैं - असल में एक खेलते हुए छोटे कोयल के बच्चे के समान हैं।

अजस्रस्फूर्जिताकारो वान्तदुःखशरावलिः | अभावनामकोदण्डः परिस्फुरति सर्वतः || ९ ||

ajasrasphūrjitākāro vāntaduḥkhaśarāvaliḥ | abhāvanāmakodaṇḍaḥ parisfurati sarvataḥ || 9 ||

English

His form never stops flashing and quivering. He spews out endless arrows of sorrow, and with a bow named Not-Noticing, he flickers everywhere at once.

हिन्दी

उसका रूप कभी न रुकने वाली चमक और कंपन से भरा है। वह दुख के तीरों की पूरी कतार उगल देता है, और उसका धनुष 'बेखबरी' नाम का है; वह हर जगह एक साथ चमकता रहता है।

अनुत्तमस्त्वधिकविलासपण्डितो भ्रमच्चलन्परिविलसन्विदारयन् | जरज्जगज्जनितविलोलमर्कटः परिस्फुरद्वपुरिह काल ईहते || १० ||

anuttamastvadhikavilāsapaṇḍito bhramaccalanparivilasanvidārayan | jarajjagajjanitavilolamarkaṭaḥ parisfuradvapuriha kāla īhate || 10 ||

English

No one can equal him; he is the greatest master of endless play. He wanders, moves, shines all around, and tears things apart - a restless monkey born from this aging world, his body flickering everywhere - this is how Time acts here.

हिन्दी

कोई उसकी बराबरी नहीं कर सकता, वह अनंत खेल का सबसे बड़ा उस्ताद है। वह घूमता है, चलता है, चारों तरफ चमकता है और चीज़ों को चीर डालता है - यह बूढ़े होते संसार से जन्मा एक बेचैन बंदर है, जिसका शरीर हर जगह टिमटिमाता रहता है - इस तरह काल यहाँ काम करता है।
