श्रीराम उवाच । बाल्यानर्थमथ त्यक्त्वा पुमानभिहताशयः । आरोहति निपाताय यौवनं संभ्रमेण तु || १ ||

śrīrāma uvāca | bālyānarthamatha tyaktvā pumānabhihatāśayaḥ | ārohati nipātāya yauvanaṃ saṃbhrameṇa tu || 1 ||

English

Sri Rama said: A man leaves behind the trouble of childhood, but his mind is already hurt, and in his hurry he climbs up into youth only to fall.

हिन्दी

श्रीराम ने कहा कि इंसान बचपन की तकलीफ़ को पीछे छोड़ देता है, पर उसका मन पहले से ही बिगड़ा हुआ होता है, और जल्दबाज़ी में वह जवानी में चढ़ जाता है, बस गिरने के लिए।

तत्रानन्तविलासस्य लोलस्य स्वस्य चेतसः । वृत्तीरनुभवन्याति दुःखाद्दुःखान्तरं जडः || २ ||

tatrānantavilāsasya lolasya svasya cetasaḥ | vṛttīranubhavanyāti duḥkhāddhuḥkhāntaraṃ jaḍaḥ || 2 ||

English

There, feeling the endless, restless workings of his own mind, the dull-witted man goes from one sorrow into another.

हिन्दी

वहाँ अपने ही मन की बेचैन, अंतहीन हरकतों को महसूस करते हुए मूर्ख आदमी एक दुख से दूसरे दुख में जाता रहता है।

स्वचित्तबिलसंस्थेन नानासंभ्रमकारिणा । बलात्कामपिशाचेन विवशः परिभूयते || ३ ||

svacittabilasaṃsthena nānāsaṃbharamakāriṇā | balātkāmapiśācena vivśaḥ paribhūyate || 3 ||

English

The demon of desire lives hidden in the den of his own mind and stirs up all kinds of confusion; by its force he is left helpless and overpowered.

हिन्दी

काम की भूत-प्रेत जैसी ताक़त उसके अपने मन की गुफा में बैठी रहती है और तरह-तरह की उलझनें पैदा करती है; उसके ज़ोर से वह बेबस होकर हार जाता है।

चिन्तानां लोलवृत्तीनां ललनानामिवाऽवृतीः । अर्पयत्यवशं चेतो बालानामञ्जनं यथा || ४ ||

cintānāṃ lolavṛttīnāṃ lalanānāmivā'vṛtīḥ | arpayatyavaśaṃ ceto bālānāmañjanaṃ yathā || 4 ||

English

Anxious thoughts move about restlessly, as unguarded as the ways of a flirting woman, and they hand over his helpless mind — the way collyrium is put into a child's eyes without asking it.

हिन्दी

बेचैन चिंताएँ एक भड़कीली औरत की तरह बेलगाम घूमती रहती हैं, और उसके बेबस मन को ऐसे सौंप देती हैं जैसे किसी बच्चे की आँखों में उसकी मर्ज़ी पूछे बिना काजल लगा दिया जाता है।

ते ते दोषा दुरारम्भास्तत्र तं तादृशाशयम् । तद्रूपं प्रतिलुम्पन्ति दुष्टास्तेनैव ये मुने || ५ ||

te te doṣā durārambhāstatra taṃ tādṛśāśayam | tadrūpaṃ pratilumpanti duṣṭāsteneva ye mune || 5 ||

English

There, O sage, those hard-to-check faults attack a mind that has become like that, and by that very youth the corrupt faults rob him of his own true nature.

हिन्दी

हे मुनि, वहाँ वे रोकी न जा सकने वाली बुराइयाँ उस वैसे ही बिगड़े हुए मन पर हमला करती हैं, और उसी जवानी के ज़रिए वे गंदी बुराइयाँ उसके असली स्वभाव को छीन लेती हैं।

महानरकबीजेन संततभ्रमदायिनायौवनेन न ये नष्टा नष्टा नान्येन ते जनाः || ६ ||

mahānarakabījena saṃtatabhramadāyināyauvanena na ye naṣṭā naṣṭā nānyena te janāḥ || 6 ||

English

Youth is the seed of a great hell, the giver of constant confusion; whoever is not ruined by it is not ruined by anything else.

हिन्दी

जवानी एक बड़े नरक का बीज है, जो लगातार उलझन देती है; जो इससे बर्बाद नहीं होता, वह किसी और चीज़ से बर्बाद नहीं होता।

नानारसमयी चित्रवृत्तान्तनिचयोम्भिताभीमा यौवनभूर्येन तीर्णा धीरः स उच्यते || ७ ||

nānārasamayī citravṛttāntanicayombhitābhīmā yauvanabhūryena tīrṇā dhīraḥ sa ucyate || 7 ||

English

The land of youth is full of many moods, packed with a mass of strange happenings, and it is a fearsome place; whoever gets safely across it is called a steady, wise man.

हिन्दी

जवानी की धरती कई तरह के मिज़ाज से भरी है, अजीब-अजीब घटनाओं के ढेर से भरी है, और यह एक डरावनी जगह है; जो इसे सही-सलामत पार कर जाए, उसे ही स्थिर और समझदार आदमी कहते हैं।

निमेषभासुराकारमालोलघनगर्जितम्विद्युत्प्रकाशमशिवं यौवनं मे न रोचते || ८ ||

nimeṣabhāsurākāramālolaghanagarjitamvidyutprakāśamaśivaṃ yauvanaṃ me na rocate || 8 ||

English

Youth shines brightly only for the blink of an eye, it rumbles like unsteady storm clouds, it flashes like lightning, and it brings nothing good — youth does not please me.

हिन्दी

जवानी सिर्फ़ पलक झपकने भर के लिए चमकती है, यह बेचैन बादलों की तरह गरजती है, बिजली की तरह कौंधती है, और इसमें कुछ भी अच्छा नहीं है — जवानी मुझे पसंद नहीं।

मधुरं स्वादु तिक्तं च दूषणं दोषभूषणम्सुराकल्लोलसदृशं यौवनं मे न रोचते || ९ ||

madhuraṃ svādu tiktaṃ ca dūṣaṇaṃ doṣabhūṣaṇamsurākallolasadṛśaṃ yauvanaṃ me na rocate || 9 ||

English

Youth is sweet and tasty, and also bitter; it is harmful, and its only ornament is its own faults, like the surging waves of liquor — youth does not please me.

हिन्दी

जवानी मीठी और स्वादिष्ट है, और कड़वी भी; यह नुक़सानदेह है, इसका गहना बस इसकी अपनी ख़ामियाँ हैं, यह शराब की उठती लहरों जैसी है — जवानी मुझे पसंद नहीं।

असत्यं सत्यसंकाशमचिराद्विप्रलम्भदम्स्वप्नाङ्गनासङ्गसमं यौवनं मे न रोचते || १० ||

asatyaṃ satyasaṃkāśamacirādvipralambhadamsvapnāṅganāsaṅgasamaṃ yauvanaṃ me na rocate || 10 ||

English

Youth is false though it looks true, and it will soon deceive; it is just like embracing a woman in a dream — youth does not please me.

हिन्दी

जवानी झूठी है पर सच जैसी दिखती है, और जल्द ही धोखा दे देगी; यह सपने में किसी औरत को गले लगाने जैसी है — जवानी मुझे पसंद नहीं।

सर्वस्याग्रे सर्वपुंसः क्षणमात्रमनोहरम्गन्धर्वनगरप्रख्यं यौवनं मे न रोचते || ११ ||

sarvasyāgre sarvapuṃsaḥ kṣaṇamātramanoharamgandharvanagaraprakhyaṃ yauvanaṃ me na rocate || 11 ||

English

Youth charms every man, right in front of everyone, but only for a moment; it is just like a city built in the sky — youth does not please me.

हिन्दी

जवानी हर आदमी को, सबके सामने, मोहित कर देती है, पर सिर्फ़ एक पल के लिए; यह आसमान में बने एक शहर जैसी है — जवानी मुझे पसंद नहीं।

इषुप्रपातमात्रं हि सुखदं दुःखभासुरम्दाहपोषप्रदं नित्यं यौवनं मे न रोचते || १२ ||

iṣuprapātamātraṃ hi sukhadaṃ duḥkhabhāsuramdāhapoṣapradaṃ nityaṃ yauvanaṃ me na rocate || 12 ||

English

Youth lasts only as long as the flight of an arrow; it gives pleasure but glows with coming pain, and it keeps bringing both burning and short relief — youth does not please me.

हिन्दी

जवानी बस एक तीर के उड़ने जितनी देर टिकती है; यह सुख देती है पर आने वाले दुख से चमकती रहती है, और यह लगातार जलन भी देती है और थोड़ी राहत भी — जवानी मुझे पसंद नहीं।

आपातमात्ररमणं सद्भावरहितान्तरम्वेश्यास्त्रीसंगमप्रख्यं यौवनं मे न रोचते || १३ ||

āpātamātraramaṇaṃ sadbhāvarahitāntaramveśyāstrīsaṃgamaprakhyaṃ yauvanaṃ me na rocate || 13 ||

English

Youth pleases only at first sight, and inside it there is no true feeling at all; it is just like being with a prostitute — youth does not please me.

हिन्दी

जवानी सिर्फ़ पहली नज़र में अच्छी लगती है, अंदर से इसमें कोई असली भावना नहीं होती; यह किसी वेश्या के साथ रहने जैसी है — जवानी मुझे पसंद नहीं।

ये केचन समारम्भास्ते सर्वे सर्वदुःखदाःतारुण्ये संनिधिं यान्ति महोत्पाता इव क्षये || १४ ||

ye kecana samārambhāste sarve sarvaduḥkhadāḥtāruṇye saṃnidhiṃ yānti mahotpātā iva kṣaye || 14 ||

English

Whatever wrong actions there are, all of them bring every kind of sorrow, and all of them gather together in youth — like great calamities gathering at a time of destruction.

हिन्दी

जो भी ग़लत काम होते हैं, वे सब हर तरह का दुख देते हैं, और वे सब जवानी में ही इकट्ठे हो जाते हैं — जैसे विनाश के समय बड़ी-बड़ी आफ़तें इकट्ठी हो जाती हैं।

हार्दान्धकारकारिण्या भैरवाकारवानपियौवनाज्ञानयामिन्या बिभेति भगवानपि || १५ ||

hārdāndhakārakāriṇyā bhairavākāravānapiyauvanājñānayāminyā bibheti bhagavānapi || 15 ||

English

Even the Lord, who himself carries a fearsome form, is afraid of it: the night of youth's ignorance, which fills the heart with darkness.

हिन्दी

यहाँ तक कि जिसका रूप ख़ुद डरावना है, वह भगवान भी इससे डरता है: जवानी की अनजानपन वाली रात से, जो दिल को अंधेरे से भर देती है।

सुविस्मृतशुभाचारं बुद्धिवैधुर्यदायिनम्ददात्यतितरामेष भ्रमं यौवनसंभ्रमः || १६ ||

suvismṛtaśubhācāraṃ buddhivaidhuryadāyinamdadātyatitarāmeṣa bhramaṃ yauvanasaṃbhramaḥ || 16 ||

English

This turmoil of youth gives, more than anything else, a confusion in which good conduct is completely forgotten and the mind is crippled.

हिन्दी

जवानी की यह हलचल सबसे ज़्यादा एक ऐसी उलझन देती है, जिसमें अच्छा आचरण पूरी तरह भुला दिया जाता है और अक़्ल कमज़ोर हो जाती है।

कान्तावियोगजातेन हृदि दुःस्पर्शवह्निनायौवने दह्यते जन्तुस्तरुर्दावाग्निना यथा || १७ ||

kāntāviyogajātena hṛdi duḥsparśavahnināyauvane dahyate jantustarurdāvāgninā yathā || 17 ||

English

In youth, a person is burned in the heart by a fire that is painful even to touch, a fire born from separation from a beloved woman — just as a tree is burned by a forest fire.

हिन्दी

जवानी में इंसान दिल में उस आग से जलता है जिसे छूना भी मुश्किल है, वह आग जो अपनी प्रिय स्त्री से बिछड़ने से पैदा होती है — जैसे कोई पेड़ जंगल की आग से जल जाता है।

सुनिर्मलापि विस्तीर्णा पावन्यपि हि यौवनेमतिः कलुषतामेति प्रावृषीव तरङ्गिणी || १८ ||

sunirmalāpi vistīrṇā pāvanyapi hi yauvanematiḥ kaluṣatāmeti prāvṛṣīva taraṅgiṇī || 18 ||

English

Even a mind that is very clear, wide, and pure turns muddy in youth — just as a river turns muddy in the rainy season.

हिन्दी

बहुत साफ़, चौड़ी और पवित्र सोच भी जवानी में गंदी हो जाती है — जैसे बरसात में नदी गंदली हो जाती है।

शक्यते घनकल्लोला भीमा लङ्घयितुं नदीन तु तारुण्यतरला तृष्णातरलितान्तरा || १९ ||

śakyate ghanakallolā bhīmā laṅghayituṃ nadīna tu tāruṇyataralā tṛṣṇātaralitāntarā || 19 ||

English

One can cross a river that is fearsome with thick waves, but not the restless river that is youth, whose depths are stirred up by endless craving.

हिन्दी

घनी लहरों वाली डरावनी नदी को तो पार किया जा सकता है, पर जवानी की बेचैन नदी को नहीं, जिसके अंदर लगातार तरसने से हलचल मची रहती है।

सा कान्ता तौ स्तनौ पीनौ ते विलासास्तदाननम्तारुण्य इति चिन्ताभिर्याति जर्जरतां जनः || २० ||

sā kāntā tau stanau pīnau te vilāsāstadānanamtāruṇya iti cintābhiryāti jarjaratāṃ janaḥ || 20 ||

English

With thoughts like 'that woman, those full breasts, that playfulness, that face' — all belonging to youth — a person wears himself down until he falls apart.

हिन्दी

'वह औरत, वे भरे हुए स्तन, वह अदा, वह चेहरा' — जवानी से जुड़े ऐसे ही ख़यालों में इंसान ख़ुद को घिसते-घिसते टूट जाता है।

नरं तरलतृष्णार्ति युवानमिह साधवःपूजयन्ति न तु च्छिन्नं जरत्तृणलवं यथा || २१ ||

naraṃ taralatṛṣṇārti yuvānamiha sādhavaḥpūjayanti na tu cchinnaṃ jarattṛṇalavaṃ yathā || 21 ||

English

Good people here honor a young man even while he suffers the pain of restless craving, but once he is cast off, they do not honor him — like a cut piece of withered grass.

हिन्दी

अच्छे लोग यहाँ एक जवान आदमी का सम्मान करते हैं, भले ही वह बेचैन तड़प से पीड़ित हो, पर जब वह छोड़ दिया जाता है तो उसका सम्मान नहीं करते — जैसे सूखी घास के कटे हुए टुकड़े का कोई सम्मान नहीं करता।

नाशायैव मदार्तस्य दोषमौक्तिकधारिणःअभिमानमहेभस्य नित्यालानं हि यौवनम् || २२ ||

nāśāyaiva madārtasya doṣamauktikadhāriṇaḥabhimānamahebhasya nityālānaṃ hi yauvanam || 22 ||

English

Youth is the permanent post to which the elephant of pride is tied — pride that is maddened with intoxication and carries the pearl-like drops of its own fault — and that post exists only to destroy it.

हिन्दी

जवानी वह पक्का खूँटा है जिससे घमंड का हाथी बँधा रहता है — वह हाथी जो नशे में पागल है और अपनी ही ख़ामी के मोती जैसी बूँदें लिए फिरता है — और वह खूँटा उसे बर्बाद करने के लिए ही है।

मनोविपुलमूलानां दोषाशीविषधारिणांशोषरोदनवृक्षाणां यौवनं बत काननम् || २३ ||

manovipulamūlānāṃ doṣāśīviṣadhāriṇāmśoṣarodanavṛkṣāṇāṃ yauvanaṃ bata kānanam || 23 ||

English

Youth, alas, is a forest — a forest of trees called withering and weeping, whose roots reach deep into the mind, and which hold venomous snakes of fault.

जवानी, हाय, एक जंगल है — 'मुरझाना' और 'रोना' नाम के पेड़ों का जंगल, जिनकी जड़ें मन की गहराई तक जाती हैं, और जिनमें बुराई के ज़हरीले साँप बैठे रहते हैं।

रसकेसरसंबाधं कुविकल्पदलाकुलम्दुश्चिन्ताचञ्चरीकाणां पुष्करं विद्धि यौवनम् || २४ ||

rasakesarasaṃbādhaṃ kuvikalpadalākulamduścintācañcarīkāṇāṃ puṣkaraṃ viddhi yauvanam || 24 ||

English

Know that youth is a lotus, crowded with the fibers of sensual taste, its petals confused with wrong ideas, and swarming with the bees that are evil thoughts.

हिन्दी

जान लो कि जवानी एक कमल है, जो स्वाद की डंडियों से ठसाठस भरा है, जिसकी पंखुड़ियाँ ग़लत ख़यालों से उलझी हैं, और जिसमें बुरे विचारों के भँवरे भिनभिनाते हैं।

कृताकृतकुपक्षाणां हृत्सरस्तीरचारिणामाधिव्याधिविहंगानामालयो नवयौवनम् || २५ ||

kṛtākṛtakupakṣāṇāṃ hṛtsarastīracāriṇāmādhivyādhivihaṃgānāmālayo navayauvanam || 25 ||

English

Fresh youth is the nest of the birds called mental worry and bodily disease — birds with crooked, uneven wings, that wander along the shore of the heart's lake.

हिन्दी

ताज़ा जवानी 'मानसिक चिंता' और 'शरीर की बीमारी' नाम के पंछियों का घोंसला है — टेढ़े-मेढ़े पंखों वाले पंछी, जो दिल की झील के किनारे घूमते रहते हैं।

जडानां गतसंख्यानां कल्लोलानां विलासिनाम् । अनपेक्षितमर्यादो वारिधिर्नवयौवनम् || २६ ||

jaḍānāṃ gatasaṃkhyānāṃ kalolānāṃ vilāsinām | anapekṣitamaryādo vāridhirnavayauvanam | || 26 ||

English

Fresh youth is an ocean of countless waves, dull and yet playful, an ocean that respects no limit.

हिन्दी

ताज़ा जवानी बेशुमार लहरों का एक समंदर है, सुस्त भी और मस्त भी, ऐसा समंदर जो किसी हद को नहीं मानता।

सर्वेषां गुणसर्गाणां परिरूढरजस्तमाः । अपनेतुं स्थितिं दक्षो विषमो यौवनानिलः || २७ ||

sarveṣāṃ guṇasargāṇāṃ parirūḍharajastamāḥ | apanetuṃ sthitiṃ dakṣo viṣamo yauvanānilaḥ | || 27 ||

English

The wind of youth is dangerous, and it is skilled at blowing away the steadiness of every virtue — a wind in which passion and dullness have taken deep root.

हिन्दी

जवानी की हवा ख़तरनाक है, और यह हर अच्छे गुण की स्थिरता को उड़ा देने में माहिर है — ऐसी हवा जिसमें राग और सुस्ती की जड़ें गहरी जमी हैं।

नयन्ति पाण्डुतां वक्रमाकुलावकरोत्कटाः । आरोहन्ति परां कोटिं रूक्षा यौवनपांसवः || २८ ||

nayanti pāṇḍutāṃ vakramākulāvakarotkaṭāḥ | ārohanti parāṃ koṭiṃ rūkṣā yauvanapāṃsavaḥ | || 28 ||

English

The dust of youth is restless and thick with filth; it turns the face pale, and, being harsh, it rises to its highest peak.

हिन्दी

जवानी की धूल बेचैन और गंदगी से भरी है; यह चेहरे को पीला कर देती है, और रूखी होकर अपने चरम पर चढ़ जाती है।

उद्वोधयति दोषालिं निकृन्तति गुणावलिम् । नराणां यौवनोल्लासो विलासो दुष्कृतश्रियाम् || २९ ||

udvodhayati doṣāliṃ nikṛntati guṇāvalim | narāṇāṃ yauvanollāso vilāso duṣkṛtaśriyām | || 29 ||

English

The high spirits of youth wake up a whole swarm of faults in men and cut down their row of virtues — it is the playground where the fortunes of bad deeds show themselves.

जवानी का जोश आदमियों में ढेर सारी बुराइयों को जगा देता है और उनकी अच्छाइयों की क़तार काट देता है — यह वह मैदान है जहाँ बुरे कामों की क़िस्मत खेलती है।

शरीरपङ्कजरजश्चञ्चलां मतिषट्पदीम् । निबध्नन्मोहयत्येष नवयौवनचन्द्रमाः || ३० ||

śarīrapaṅkajarajaścañcalāṃ matiṣaṭpadīm | nibadhnanmohayatyēṣa navayauvanacandramāḥ | || 30 ||

English

This moon of fresh youth ties down the mind, a restless bee caught in the pollen of the body's lotus, and it deludes that bee.

हिन्दी

ताज़ा जवानी का यह चाँद मन को बाँध देता है, जो शरीर रूपी कमल के पराग में फँसी एक बेचैन मधुमक्खी है, और उसे भरमा देता है।

शरीरखण्डकोद्भूता रम्या यौवनवल्लरीलग्नमेव मनोभृङ्गं मदयत्युन्नतिं गता || ३१ ||

śarīrakhaṇḍakodbhūtā ramyā yauvanavallarīlagnameva manobhṛṅgaṃ madayatyunnatiṃ gatā || 31 ||

English

The lovely creeper that is youth springs up from a piece of the body, and once it has grown tall, it intoxicates the mind, the bee still clinging to it.

हिन्दी

जवानी की सुंदर बेल शरीर के ही एक हिस्से से उगती है, और ऊँची बढ़ने पर यह मन को नशे में डाल देती है, जो मधुमक्खी की तरह उससे चिपका रहता है।

शरीरमरुतापोत्थां युवतामृगतृष्णिकाम्मनोमृगाः प्रधावन्तः पतन्ति विषयावटे || ३२ ||

śarīramarutāpotthāṃ yuvatāmṛgatṛṣṇikāmmanomṛgāḥ pradhāvantaḥ patanti viṣayāvaṭe || 32 ||

English

Youthfulness is a mirage rising from the heat of the body; the deer that are our minds run eagerly toward it and fall into the pit of the senses.

हिन्दी

जवानी शरीर की गर्मी से उठने वाला एक मृगतृष्णा है; मन रूपी हिरण उसकी तरफ़ दौड़ते हैं और विषयों के गड्ढे में गिर पड़ते हैं।

शरीरशर्वरीज्योत्स्ना चित्तकेसरिणः सटालहरी जीविताम्भोधेर्युवता मे न तुष्टये || ३३ ||

śarīraśarvarījyotsnā cittakesariṇaḥ saṭālaharī jīvitāmbhodheryuvatā me na tuṣṭaye || 33 ||

English

Youth is the moonlight over the night of the body; it makes the mane of the mind's lion surge like a wave on the ocean of life. It brings me no contentment.

हिन्दी

जवानी शरीर की रात पर फैली चाँदनी है; यह मन रूपी शेर के अयाल को जीवन के समंदर पर लहर की तरह उठा देती है। इससे मुझे कोई संतोष नहीं मिलता।

दिनानि कतिचिद्येयं फलिता देहजङ्गलेयुवता शरदस्यां हि न समाश्वासमर्हथ || ३४ ||

dināni katicidyeyaṃ phalitā dehajaṅgaleyuvatā śaradasyāṃ hi na samāśvāsamarhatha || 34 ||

English

This youthfulness, having borne fruit for only a few days in the wilderness of the body, is like autumn — you should not place your trust in it.

हिन्दी

यह जवानी, जो शरीर के जंगल में बस कुछ दिनों के लिए फल देती है, पतझड़ जैसी है — इस पर भरोसा मत करो।

झटित्येव प्रयात्येव शरीराद्युवताखगःक्षणेनैवाल्पभाग्यस्य हस्ताच्चिन्तामणिर्यथा || ३५ ||

jhaṭityeva prayātyeva śarīrādyuvatākhagaḥkṣaṇenaivālpabhāgyasya hastāccintāmaṇiryathā || 35 ||

English

The bird that is youth suddenly flies away from the body, all at once — just as a wish-granting jewel slips in an instant from the hand of an unlucky man.

हिन्दी

जवानी नाम की चिड़िया अचानक, एक ही झटके में शरीर से उड़ जाती है — जैसे किसी बदक़िस्मत आदमी के हाथ से चिंतामणि पल भर में फिसल जाती है।

यदा यदा परां कोटिमध्यारोहति यौवनम् । वल्गन्ति सज्वराः कामास्तदा नाशाय केवलम् || ३६ ||

yadā yadā parāṃ koṭimadhyārohati yauvanam | valganti sajvarāḥ kāmāstadā nāśāya kevalam || 36 ||

English

Whenever youth climbs to its highest point, feverish desires leap up — and then it is only for ruin.

जब भी जवानी अपने चरम पर चढ़ती है, तपती हुई इच्छाएँ उछलने लगती हैं — और तब यह सिर्फ़ बर्बादी के लिए होती है।

तावदेव विवल्गन्ति रागद्वेषपिशाचकाः । नास्तमेति समस्तैषा यावद्यौवनयामिनी || ३७ ||

tāvadeva vivalganti rāgadveṣapiśācakāḥ | nāstameti samastaiṣā yāvadyauvanayāminī || 37 ||

English

Only for as long as this whole night of youth has not yet set do the demons of attachment and hatred keep leaping about.

जब तक जवानी की यह पूरी रात ढली नहीं है, तभी तक राग और द्वेष के भूत-प्रेत उछल-कूद मचाते हैं।

नानाविकारबहुले वराके क्षणनाशिनि । कारुण्यं कुरु तारुण्ये म्रियमाणे सुतै यथा || ३८ ||

nānāvikārabahule varāke kṣaṇanāśini | kāruṇyaṃ kuru tāruṇye mriyamāṇe sutai yathā || 38 ||

English

Show pity to youth — so full of changes, so wretched, gone in a moment — when it is dying, feel for it as you would for a dying son.

जवानी पर दया करो — जो इतने बदलावों से भरी है, इतनी बेचारी है, पल भर में ख़त्म हो जाने वाली है — जब यह मर रही हो, तो इसके लिए वैसा ही महसूस करो जैसे किसी मरते हुए बेटे के लिए करते हो।

हर्षमायाति यो मोहात्पुरुषः क्षणभङ्गिना । यौवनेन महामुग्धः स वै नरमृगः स्मृतः || ३९ ||

harṣamāyāti yo mohāt puruṣaḥ kṣaṇabhaṅginā | yauvanena mahāmugdhaḥ sa vai naramṛgaḥ smṛtaḥ || 39 ||

English

The man who, out of delusion, feels joy because of youth, which shatters in an instant — that man, thoroughly fooled by youth, is indeed called a deer wearing a man's shape.

हिन्दी

जो आदमी भ्रम में पड़कर, पल भर में टूट जाने वाली जवानी की वजह से ख़ुश होता है, जवानी से पूरी तरह मूर्ख बना वह आदमी सच में इंसान के रूप में हिरण कहलाता है।

मानमोहान्मदोन्मत्तं यौवनं योऽभिलष्यति । अचिरेण स दुर्बुद्धिः पश्चात्तापेन युज्यते || ४० ||

mānamohānmadonmattaṃ yauvanaṃ yo'bhilaṣyati | acireṇa sa durbuddhiḥ paścāttāpena yujyate || 40 ||

English

Whoever, out of pride and delusion, longs for youth, maddened as it is with intoxication — that foolish man will soon be caught by regret.

जो कोई घमंड और भ्रम में पड़कर नशे में डूबी जवानी की चाह रखता है, वह मूर्ख आदमी जल्द ही पछतावे में फँस जाएगा।

ते पूज्यास्ते महात्मानस्त एव पुरुषा भुवि । ये सुखेन समुत्तीर्णाः साधो यौवनसंकटात् || ४१ ||

te pūjyāste mahātmānaste eva puruṣā bhuvi | ye sukhena samuttīrṇāḥ sādho yauvanasaṃkaṭāt || 41 ||

English

O good soul, those who have safely crossed the danger of youth — they alone deserve honor, they are the great souls, they alone are true men on this earth.

हे साधु, जो लोग जवानी के ख़तरे को आसानी से पार कर गए हैं — वही सम्मान के लायक़ हैं, वही महान आत्माएँ हैं, इस धरती पर सच्चे इंसान भी वही हैं।

सुखेन तीर्यतेऽम्भोधिरुत्कृष्टमकराकरः । न कल्लोलबलोल्लासि सदोषं हतयौवनम् || ४२ ||

sukhena tīryate'mbhodhirutkṛṣṭamakarākaraḥ | na kallocalabalollāsi sadoṣaṃ hatayauvanam || 42 ||

English

An ocean, even one crowded with great sea-monsters, can be crossed easily — but not this harmful, deadly youth, surging with the force of its own waves.

बड़े-बड़े समुद्री जीवों से भरा समंदर भी आसानी से पार किया जा सकता है — पर यह नुक़सानदेह, जानलेवा जवानी नहीं, जो अपनी ही लहरों के ज़ोर से उछलती रहती है।

विनयभूषितमार्यजनास्पदं करुणयोज्ज्वलमावलितं गुणैः । इह हि दुर्लभमङ्ग सुयौवनं जगति काननमम्बरगं यथा || ४३ ||

vinayabhūṣitamāryajanāspadaṃ karuṇayojjvalamāvalitaṃ guṇaiḥ | iha hi durlabhamanga suyauvanam jagati kānanamambaragaṃ yathā || 43 ||

English

Dear one, a truly good youth — adorned with humility, a fit home for noble people, shining with compassion, wrapped round with every virtue — is indeed rare in this world, like a forest floating in the sky.

प्रिय, सच में अच्छी जवानी — जो विनम्रता से सजी हो, जो भले लोगों के रहने लायक़ हो, जो दया से दमकती हो, जो हर गुण से लिपटी हो — इस दुनिया में सच में दुर्लभ है, जैसे आसमान में तैरता कोई जंगल।
