श्रीराम उवाच | मुधैवाभ्युत्थितो मोहान्मुधैव परिवर्धते | मिथ्यामयेन भीतोऽस्मि दुरहंकारशत्रुणा || १ ||

śrīrāma uvāca | mudhaivābhyutthito mohānmudhaiva parivardhate | mithyāmayena bhīto'smi durahaṃkāraśatruṇā || 1 ||

English

Sri Rama said: This ego rises out of delusion for no real reason, and for no real reason it keeps growing. I am afraid of this enemy made of pure falsehood — this troublesome sense of "I."

हिन्दी

श्रीराम ने कहा: यह अहंकार बिना किसी वजह के मोह से उठ खड़ा होता है, और बिना किसी वजह के बढ़ता ही रहता है। मुझे इस दुश्मन से डर लगता है जो पूरी तरह झूठ से बना है — यह परेशान करने वाला "मैं" का भाव।

अहंकारवशादेव दोषकोशकदर्थताम् | ददाति दीनदीनानां संसारो विविधाकृतिः || २ ||

ahaṃkāravāśādeva doṣakośakadarthatām | dadāti dīnadīnānāṃ saṃsāro vividhākṛtiḥ || 2 ||

English

It is only because of the ego that this world, which takes so many different shapes, torments the most wretched people with a whole storehouse of troubles.

हिन्दी

सिर्फ अहंकार की वजह से ही यह संसार, जो इतने अलग-अलग रूप लेता है, सबसे दुखी लोगों को तरह-तरह की मुसीबतों के पूरे ढेर से सताता है।

अहंकारवशादापदहंकाराहुराधयः | अहंकारवशादीहा त्वहंकारो ममामयः || ३ ||

ahaṃkāravāśādāpadaahaṃkārāhurādhayaḥ | ahaṃkāravāśādīhā tvahaṃkāro mamāmayaḥ || 3 ||

English

Calamity comes from the power of the ego. They say mental anguish also comes from the ego. Craving comes from the power of the ego. Truly, the ego is my disease.

हिन्दी

मुसीबत अहंकार की ताकत से आती है। कहते हैं मन की पीड़ा भी अहंकार से ही आती है। लालच भी अहंकार की ताकत से आता है। सच तो यह है कि अहंकार ही मेरी बीमारी है।

तमहंकारमाश्रित्य परमं चिरवैरिणम् | न भुजे न पिबाम्यम्भः किमु भोगान्भुजे मुने || ४ ||

tamahaṃkāramāśritya paramaṃ ciravairiṇam | na bhuje na pibāmyambhaḥ kimu bhogānbhuje mune || 4 ||

English

Because of this ego — my greatest, oldest enemy — I cannot eat, I cannot even drink water. How then could I enjoy any pleasures at all, sage?

हिन्दी

इस अहंकार की वजह से — जो मेरा सबसे बड़ा, सबसे पुराना दुश्मन है — मैं न तो खा पाता हूँ, न पानी तक पी पाता हूँ। फिर हे मुनि, मैं भोग-विलास का सुख कैसे उठा सकता हूँ?

संसाररजनी दीर्घा माया मनसि मोहिनी | ततोऽहंकारदोषेण किरातेनेव वागुरा || ५ ||

saṃsārarajanī dīrghā māyā manasi mohinī | tato'haṃkāradoṣeṇa kirāteneva vāgurā || 5 ||

English

The night of this world is long, and illusion keeps clouding the mind. Then, because of the fault of the ego, it becomes like a net a hunter sets to trap his prey.

हिन्दी

इस संसार की रात बहुत लंबी है, और माया मन को लगातार भरमाती रहती है। फिर, अहंकार के दोष के कारण, यह वैसे ही बन जाता है जैसे कोई शिकारी अपने शिकार को फँसाने के लिए जाल बिछाता है।

यानि दुःखानि दीर्घाणि विषमाणि महान्ति च | अहंकारात्प्रसूतानि तान्यगात्खदिरा इव || ६ ||

yāni duḥkhāni dīrghāṇi viṣamāṇi mahānti ca | ahaṃkārātprasūtāni tānyagātkhadirā iva || 6 ||

English

All those sorrows that are long-lasting, harsh, and great are born from the ego — they spring up like thorny khadira trees growing from the ground.

हिन्दी

वे सारे दुख जो लंबे, कठोर और बड़े होते हैं, अहंकार से ही पैदा होते हैं — वे ज़मीन से उगते काँटेदार खदिर के पेड़ों की तरह फूट पड़ते हैं।

शमेन्दुसैंहिकेयास्यं गुणपद्महिमाशनिम् | साम्यमेघशरत्कालमहंकारं त्यजाम्यहम् || ७ ||

śamendusaiṃhikeyāsyaṃ guṇapadmahimāśanim | sāmyameghaśaratkālamahaṃkāraṃ tyajāmyaham || 7 ||

English

I give up this ego. It swallows the moon of my inner calm, the way the demon Rahu swallows the moon during an eclipse. It destroys the lotus of my good qualities, the way frost and hail destroy a lotus. And it scatters the clouds of my inner balance, the way autumn scatters the rain clouds from the sky.

हिन्दी

मैं इस अहंकार को छोड़ देता हूँ। यह मेरी शांति रूपी चाँद को उसी तरह निगल जाता है जैसे ग्रहण में राहु नाम का राक्षस चाँद को निगल जाता है। यह मेरे गुणों रूपी कमल को उसी तरह बर्बाद कर देता है जैसे पाला और ओले किसी कमल को बर्बाद कर देते हैं। और यह मेरी समता रूपी बादलों को उसी तरह तितर-बितर कर देता है जैसे शरद ऋतु आकाश से बारिश के बादलों को हटा देती है।

नाहं रामो न मे वाञ्छा भावेषु न च मे मनः | शान्त आसितुमिच्छामि स्वात्मनीव जिनो यथा || ८ ||

nāhaṃ rāmo na me vāñchā bhāveṣu na ca me manaḥ | śānta āsitumicchāmi svātmanīva jino yathā || 8 ||

English

I am not this "Rama"; I have no craving for things, and my mind does not run after them. I want to stay peaceful, resting in my own true self, like a victor who has conquered himself.

हिन्दी

मैं यह "राम" नहीं हूँ; मुझे किसी चीज़ की लालसा नहीं है, और मेरा मन उनके पीछे नहीं भागता। मैं शांत रहना चाहता हूँ, अपने असली स्वरूप में टिककर, बिल्कुल वैसे ही जैसे कोई विजेता जिसने खुद पर जीत हासिल कर ली हो।

अहंकारवशाद्यद्यन्मया भुक्तं हुतं कृतम् | सर्वं तत्तदवस्त्वेव वस्त्वहंकाररिक्तता || ९ ||

ahaṃkāravashādyadyanmayā bhuktaṃ hutaṃ kṛtam | sarvaṃ tattadavastveva vastvahaṃkārariktatā || 9 ||

English

Whatever I have enjoyed, offered in sacrifice, or done under the power of the ego — all of it is really nothing at all. The only real thing is being empty of this ego.

हिन्दी

मैंने अहंकार के वश में जो कुछ भी भोगा है, हवन में चढ़ाया है, या किया है — वह सब सच में कुछ भी नहीं है। सच्ची चीज़ बस एक ही है — इस अहंकार से खाली हो जाना।

अहमित्यस्ति चेद्ब्रह्मन्नहमापदि दुःखितः | नास्ति चेत्सुखितस्तस्मादनहंकारिता वरम् || १० ||

ahamityasti cedbrahmannahamāpadi duḥkhitaḥ | nāsti cetsukhitastasmādanahaṃkāritā varam || 10 ||

English

Brahmin, if this sense of "I" exists, then when trouble comes, "I" suffer. If it does not exist, one stays happy even then. So it is better to have no ego at all.

हिन्दी

हे ब्राह्मण, अगर यह "मैं" का भाव है, तो मुसीबत आने पर "मैं" ही दुखी होता हूँ। अगर यह न हो, तो उसी मुसीबत में भी इंसान सुखी रहता है। इसलिए अहंकार का बिल्कुल न होना ही बेहतर है।

अहंकारं परित्यज्य मुने शान्तमनस्तया | अवतिष्ठे गतोद्वेगो भोगौघो भङ्गुरास्पदः || ११ ||

ahaṃkāraṃ parityajya mune śāntamanastayā | avatiṣṭhe gatodvego bhogaugho bhaṅgurāspadaḥ || 11 ||

English

Sage, having given up the ego, I remain calm and free of anxiety, with a peaceful mind — since this whole flood of worldly pleasures is only a fragile, crumbling resting place anyway.

हिन्दी

हे मुनि, अहंकार को छोड़कर, मैं शांत मन से, बिना किसी घबराहट के टिका रहता हूँ — क्योंकि सुख-भोगों का यह पूरा सैलाब है ही एक कमज़ोर, टूट जाने वाला ठिकाना।

ब्रह्मन्यावदहंकारवारिदः परिजृम्भते | तावद्विकासमायाति तृष्णाकुटजमञ्जरी || १२ ||

brahmaṇyāvadahaṃkāravāridaḥ parijṛmbhate | tāvadvikāsamāyāti tṛṣṇākuṭajamañjarī || 12 ||

English

Brahmin, as long as the cloud of ego keeps spreading, the flower clusters of craving — like kutaja blossoms in the rains — keep on blooming.

हिन्दी

हे ब्राह्मण, जब तक अहंकार का बादल फैलता रहता है, तब तक लालच के फूलों के गुच्छे — बरसात में खिलने वाले कुटज के फूलों की तरह — खिलते ही रहते हैं।

अहंकारघने शान्ते तृष्णा नवतडिल्लता | शान्तदीपशिखावृत्त्या क्वापि यात्यतिसत्वरम् || १३ ||

ahaṃkāraghane śānte tṛṣṇā navataḍillatā | śāntadīpaśikhāvṛttyā kvāpi yātyatisatvaram || 13 ||

English

When the cloud of ego is stilled, craving — a streak of fresh lightning — vanishes somewhere very quickly, just like the flame of a lamp that has been put out.

हिन्दी

जब अहंकार का बादल थम जाता है, तो लालच — जो ताज़ी बिजली की एक लकीर जैसी है — बहुत तेज़ी से कहीं गायब हो जाती है, बिल्कुल वैसे ही जैसे बुझ चुके दीये की लौ गायब हो जाती है।

अहंकारमहाविन्ध्ये मनोमत्तमहागजः | विस्फूर्जति घनास्फोटैः स्तनितैरिव वारिदः || १४ ||

ahaṃkāramahāvindhye manomattamahāgajaḥ | visphūrjati ghanāsphoṭaiḥ stanitairiva vāridaḥ || 14 ||

English

On the great Vindhya mountain range of ego, the huge, wild elephant of the mind trumpets loudly with thunderous roars, like a rain cloud rumbling with thunder.

हिन्दी

अहंकार के विशाल विंध्य पर्वत पर, मन नाम का बड़ा, मस्त हाथी ज़ोर-ज़ोर से गरजता है, बिल्कुल वैसे ही जैसे बारिश का बादल गड़गड़ाहट से गरजता है।

इह देहमहारण्ये घनाहंकारकेसरी | योऽयमुल्लसति स्फारस्तेनेदं जगदाततम् || १५ ||

iha dehamahāraṇye ghanāhaṃkārakeśarī | yo'yamullasati sphārastene'daṃ jagadātatam || 15 ||

English

In this great forest of the body, there roams a huge, powerful lion called ego. It is because of this lion that this whole world spreads out as it does.

हिन्दी

इस शरीर रूपी बड़े जंगल में, अहंकार नाम का एक विशाल, ताकतवर शेर घूमता रहता है। इसी शेर की वजह से यह पूरी दुनिया इस तरह फैली हुई है।

तृष्णातन्तुलवप्रोता बहुजन्मपरम्परा अहंकारोग्रखिङ्गेन कण्ठे मुक्तावली कृता || १६ ||

tṛṣṇātantulavaprotā bahujanmaparamparā ahaṃkārograkhiṅgena kaṇṭhe muktāvalī kṛtā || 16 ||

English

The long chain of many births, strung together on threads of craving, has been made into a pearl necklace around the neck by that fierce hunter, the ego.

हिन्दी

कई जन्मों की यह लंबी कड़ी, जो लालच के धागों में पिरोई गई है, उसे उस क्रूर शिकारी अहंकार ने गले में पहनने वाली मोतियों की माला बना दिया है।

पुत्रमित्रकलत्रादितन्त्रमन्त्रविवर्जितम् प्रसारितमनेनेह मुनेऽहंकारवैरिणा || १७ ||

putramitra kalatrāditantramantrivivarjitam prasāritamaneneha mune'haṃkāravairiṇā || 17 ||

English

This whole tangle of sons, friends, wives, and the rest — with no real order or reason to it — has been spread out here, sage, by this enemy called ego.

हिन्दी

बेटों, दोस्तों, पत्नियों और बाकी सबका यह पूरा उलझा हुआ जाल — जिसमें कोई असली तरतीब या वजह नहीं है — इसे यहाँ, हे मुनि, इस दुश्मन अहंकार ने फैलाया है।

प्रमार्जितेऽहमित्यस्मिन्पदे स्वयमपि द्रुतम् प्रमार्जिता भवन्त्येते सर्व एव दुराधयः || १८ ||

pramārjite'hamityasminpade svayamapi drutam pramārjitā bhavantyete sarva eva durādhayaḥ || 18 ||

English

Once this notion of "I" is wiped away, then, all by itself and very quickly, every one of these troubling anxieties gets wiped away too.

हिन्दी

जैसे ही यह "मैं" का ख्याल मिट जाता है, वैसे ही अपने आप, बहुत तेज़ी से, ये सारी परेशान करने वाली चिंताएँ भी मिट जाती हैं।

अहमित्यम्बुदे शान्ते शनैश्च शमशातिनी मनोगगनसंमोहमिहिका क्वापि गच्छति || १९ ||

ahamityambude śānte śanaiśca śamaśātinī manogagana sammohami hikā kvāpi gacchati || 19 ||

English

When the cloud called "I" is stilled, then little by little the fog of delusion — the very thing that destroys inner peace — clears away from the sky of the mind and disappears somewhere.

हिन्दी

जब "मैं" नाम का बादल थम जाता है, तो धीरे-धीरे मोह का कोहरा — जो शांति को ही नष्ट करता है — मन के आकाश से छँट जाता है और कहीं गायब हो जाता है।

निरहंकारवृत्तेर्मे मौर्ख्याच्छोकेन सीदतः यत्किंचिदुचितं ब्रह्मंस्तदाख्यातुमिहार्हसि || २० ||

nirahaṃkāravṛtterme maurkhyācchokena sīdataḥ yatkiñciducitaṃ brahmaṃstadaākhyātumihārhasi || 20 ||

English

Brahmin, I want to live free of this ego, yet out of my own foolishness I am sinking into grief. Please tell me whatever is right and fitting for me now.

हिन्दी

हे ब्राह्मण, मैं इस अहंकार से मुक्त होकर जीना चाहता हूँ, फिर भी अपनी ही मूर्खता से मैं दुख में डूबता जा रहा हूँ। कृपया मुझे बताइए जो कुछ भी अभी मेरे लिए सही और उचित है।

सर्वापदां निलयमध्रुवमन्तरस्थमुन्मुक्तमुत्तमगुणेन न संश्रयामि | यत्नादहंकृतिपदं परितोऽतिदुःखं शेषेण मां समनुशाधि महानुभाव || २१ ||

sarvāpadāṃ nilayamadhruvamantarasthamunmuktamuttamaguṇena na saṃśrayāmi | yatnādahaṃkṛtipadaṃ parito'tiduḥkhaṃ śeṣeṇa māṃ samanuśādhi mahānubhāva || 21 ||

English

With real effort, I refuse to take shelter any longer in this unsteady home of every calamity that lives inside me — something only the highest virtue can free me from. This state called "ego" brings intense suffering on every side. Great one, please teach me the rest.

हिन्दी

पूरी कोशिश के साथ, मैं अब इस डगमगाते घर में शरण नहीं लूँगा जो मेरे अंदर बसी हर मुसीबत का ठिकाना है — जिससे छुटकारा सिर्फ सबसे ऊँचे गुण से ही मिल सकता है। "अहंकार" नाम की यह अवस्था चारों तरफ भारी दुख देती है। हे महानुभाव, कृपया मुझे बाकी सब सिखाइए।
