Sri Rama said: My mind is worn ragged by its own faults and turns away from good deeds and from serving the wise; like a wisp of down caught inside the wind, it moves about, restless and unsteady.
It rushes here and there in great agitation, running about for no reason, going farther and farther away, miserable, like a stray dog in a village.
O brahmin, craving the grass-shoots of pleasure and never thinking of the pit it may fall into, my mind, like a deer, runs far away in every direction.
mano moharathārūḍhaṃ śarīrātsamatāsukham | haratyapahatodvegaṃ haṃsaḥ kṣīramivāmbhasaḥ || 11 ||
My mind, riding the chariot of delusion, steals from my body that peaceful, untroubled happiness of even-mindedness — the way a swan draws out only the milk from water.
O brahmin, I am tied down by my own mind, as a bird is tied down by a net — a mind whose very nature clings fast to the tightly knotted thread of craving.
O brahmin, my mind has grown cruel and dull, chasing after its wife, craving, and it has abandoned me, the way a dog abandons a corpse.
O brahmin, my dull-natured mind, tossing and lashing about like unsteady waves, has swept me away — like a tree on the riverbank carried off by a flood.
My wicked mind has wound itself around me, like a rough rope wound around a well's wooden beam — going endlessly down from the surface into the well's depth, and back up from the depth to the surface.
My wicked mind, huge in appearance but completely false — a thing that crumbles the moment it is examined — has seized me, the way a ghost seizes a child.
Father, this ocean of my mind — dull by nature, always tossing, full of wide whirlpools and vicious serpents — carries me far away.
The mind is the cause of everything; when it exists, the three worlds exist; when it is destroyed, the world is destroyed. So it must be treated with real effort.
Hundreds of pleasures and pains surely arise from the mind, the way forests spring from a great mountain. I think, O sage, that when this mind is worn thin by the power of discernment, all of them melt away completely.
The hope of winning every virtue is fixed on conquering that one enemy — the mind — and even the great sages have anchored their hope there; I too have risen up here to conquer it. Since all delight has left me inside, I do not welcome Lakshmi, whose pleasures are dull and tainted, just as the moon takes no delight in a streak of cloud.
