Sri Rama said: Life is as fragile as a drop of water trembling at the tip of a leaf's edge. Leaving the body suddenly, with no warning, it goes away like a madman running off.
For those whose minds are worn ragged by clinging to sense pleasures — poisonous snakes in disguise — and whose understanding of the self is still weak, life itself becomes a cause of trouble.
ye tu vijñātavijñeyā viśrāntā vitate pade | bhāvābhāvasamāśvāsamāyusteṣāṃ sukhāyate || 3 ||
But those who have known all that needs to be known, and who rest in that vast, all-pervading state, feel steady whether things come or go, whether they exist or not — for them life becomes pleasant.
As for us, sage, whose certainty is fixed only on this limited body — we find no peace in a life that is nothing but a flash of lightning in the clouds of this world.
Delicate as an autumn cloud, like a lamp that has run out of oil, trembling like a little wave — life is noticed only after it has already slipped away.
I would sooner set my heart on catching a wave, or the moon's reflection, or a mass of lightning, or a lotus growing in the sky — but not on this life, whose end is already fixed.
A restless mind chases after this hollow, drawn-out life, but being deluded, all it gets is suffering — like a female mule carrying a foal in her womb, a burden that will destroy her.
saṃsārasaṃsṛtāvasyāṃ pheno'smin sargasāgare | kāyavallayāmbhaso brahmañjīvitaṃ me na rocate || 9 ||
In this flow of worldly existence, in this ocean of creation, my body is a fragile creeper and my life is just foam on its water. Brahmin, I take no delight in such a life.
bhāro'vivekinḥ śāstraṃ bhāro jñānaṃ ca rāgiṇaḥ | aśāntasya mano bhāro bhāro'nātmavido vapuḥ || 13 ||
Scripture is a burden to a person with no discernment. Knowledge is a burden to a person full of craving. The mind is a burden to a person who has no peace. And the body is a burden to a person who does not know the true self.
For a person of poor understanding, the body, the lifespan, the mind, the intellect, the sense of "I," and every effort — all of it only adds suffering, like fresh loads piled onto someone who is already carrying a heavy burden.
Every day, quietly, little by little, without pause, life is worn down and destroyed by time — just as a rat gnaws away at an old white cloth.
Life is drunk away by fierce diseases that live in the hollows of the body and bring burning poison — the way fierce serpents in a forest swallow up the very air.
Life is gnawed through without a break by cruel sufferings — small yet constant, living inside, always oozing pain — the way an old tree is eaten through by wood-boring worms.
Old age wastes the body away completely, the way a huge eater finishes off a meal — old age that seems full of the charms of the senses, like smell, but is really just an empty, powerless prostitute.
After only a few days, youth realizes it is no longer valued and leaves — the way a good person walks away from a bad one.
Beauty is desired by Death — Death, who is always a friend to destruction, forever bound to old age and dying — the way a skilled hunter desires his prey.
sthiratayā sukhabhāsitayā tayā satatamujjñitamuttamaphalgu ca | jagati nāsti tathā guṇavarjitaṃ maraṇabhājanamāyuridaṃ yathā || 23 ||
In this world, nothing is as empty of any real worth as this life, this vessel that carries us straight to death. It looks steady, it looks full of pleasure, yet it keeps being thrown away — it seems like the finest thing, but it is really worthless.
