17.60.1

śrīvasiṣṭha uvāca | tato'hamabhito bhrāntastādṛśaṃ pravicārayan | bahukālamasaṃruddhasaṃvidākāśatāṃ gataḥ || 1 ||

Shri Vasishtha said: Then, I wandered around, contemplating such a state, and for a long time, I remained in a state of unobstructed consciousness.

śabdaṃ paścāttamaśrauṣamahaṃ vīṇāsvanopamam | kramātsphuṭapadaṃ jātaṃ tata āryātvamāgatam || 2 ||

Then I heard a sound similar to the melody of a veena, which gradually became clear words, and then it attained the status of a noble verse.

śabdadeśapatadvṛṣṭirdṛṣṭavānvaniāmaham | pārśve kanakaniṣpandaprabhayā bhāsitāmbarām || 3 ||

I saw a woman in the direction of the sound, shining with the radiance of golden light, adorned with glittering ornaments.

47.60.4

ālolamālyavasanāmalakākulalocanām | loladdhammillavalanāmanyāṃ śriyamivāgatām || 4 ||

She was adorned with swaying garlands and clothes, with eyes filled with joy, and her hair was waving, as if another goddess of fortune had arrived.

57.60.5

kāntakāñcanagaurāṅgīṃ mārgasthanavayauvanām | vanadevīmivāmodisarvāvayavasundarīm || 5 ||

She had a beautiful golden complexion, was in the prime of her youth, and was as delightful as a forest goddess, with every part of her body beautiful.

sā pūrṇacandravadanā puṣpaprakarahāsinī | yauvanoddāmavadanā pakṣmalakṣaṇaśālinī || 6 ||

She has a face like the full moon, smiles like a cluster of flowers, has a youthful and radiant face, and has beautiful eyelashes.

ākāśakośasadanā śaśāṅkakarasundarīmuktākalāparacanā kāntā madanusāriṇī || 7 ||

She is like the sky, beautiful like the moon, adorned with pearls, and follows the path of love.

svareṇa madhureṇaivamāryāmāryavilāsinī | papāṭhākaṭhinaṃ vāmā matpārśve mṛduhāsinī || 8 ||

With a sweet voice, she is a noble lady who enjoys noble pleasures. She recited harsh words softly, standing by my side with a gentle smile.

asaducitariktacetanasaṅsṛtisariti pramuhyamānānām | avalambanataṭaviṭapinamabhinauṃi bhavantameva mune || 9 ||

For those who are bewildered by the flow of consciousness devoid of proper conduct, I bow to you, O sage, as the supporting tree.

ityākarṇyāhamālokya tāṃ cāruvadanasvanām | lalaneyaṃ kimanayetyanādṛtyaiva tāṃ gataḥ || 10 ||

Having heard and seen her with a beautiful voice and face, I wondered, 'What does this charming lady intend?' and without paying attention to her, I left.

tato jagadvṛndamayīṃ māyāṃ saṃprekṣya vismitaḥ | anādṛtyaiva tāṃ vyomni vihartumahamudyataḥ || 11 ||

Then, seeing the world-enchanting illusion, I was amazed. Disregarding it, I was eager to roam in the sky.

tatastāṃ tatkṛtāṃ cintāmalamutsṛjya khe sthitāmjaganmāyāṃ kalayituṃ vyomātmāhaṃ pravṛttavān || 12 ||

Then, abandoning the impure thoughts created by that, I, the sky-self, began to imagine the world-illusion situated in the sky.

137.60.13

pramattapuṣkarāvartānunmattotpātamārutān | sphuṭitādrīndṛḍhākāraghaṭitabrahammaṇḍapān || 13 ||

The careless whirlpools, the mad storms, the split mountains, the firmly shaped Brahma pavilions.

na paśyanti na śṛṇvanti kadācitkānicitkvacit | tāni kalpamahākalpamahājanmaikatānyatha || 14 ||

They do not see, they do not hear, sometimes, somewhere, those great creations, great dissolutions, and great births.

na paśyanti na śṛṇvanti kadācitkānicittāni kalpamahākalpamahājanmaikatānyatha || 15 ||

They do not see or hear anything at any time, whether it be a moment, an eon, or a great birth, all are the same.

167.60.16

jvalatkalpāgnivisphoṭacaṭadaiḍaviḍāspadān | pratapaddvādaśākārakandumārtaṇḍamaṇḍalān || 16 ||

The blazing flames of the universal fire, the bursting of the universe, the glowing suns in the twelve forms.

177.60.17

luṭhatsurapuravrātavitatākranda ghargharān | raṇasarvādrikatakaśreṇīnigiraṇodbhaṭān || 17 ||

The roaring and clamoring of the battlefields, the echoing of the mountains, the thunderous sounds of the war cries, and the fierce sounds of the battlefields.

187.60.18

kalpāgni jvalanollāsa paṭhatpaṭapāṭāravān | ātmabhraṃśabṛhatkṣobhakṣubdhāmbaramahārṇavān || 18 ||

The blazing fire of destruction, the crackling sounds, the great agitation of the self, the turbulent sky, and the vast ocean.

197.60.19

devāsura narāgāra ghargharākranda karkaśān | saptārṇava mahāpūra pūritārkendu maṇḍalān || 19 ||

The harsh cries of gods, demons, and humans, the seven great oceans filled with the light of the sun and moon.

na vicetanti kalpāntān sarvāṇy eva parasparam | ekamandira saṃsuptāḥ svapne raṇarayāniva || 20 ||

They do not perceive the end of the cosmic cycle, all of them, as if asleep in a single temple, dreaming of the turmoil of battle.

tatra rudra sahasrāṇi brahmakoṭi śatāni ca | dṛṣṭāni viṣṇu lakṣāṇi kalpavṛndāny alaṃ mayā || 21 ||

There, I saw thousands of Rudras, hundreds of millions of Brahmas, and hundreds of thousands of Vishnus, countless cosmic cycles.

tatra kvacidanāditye nirahorātrabhūtale | ākalpayugavarṣānte jagatyūhaiḥ kṣayodayah || 22 ||

In that place, where there is no sun, no day or night, at the end of the kalpa, yuga, and year, the world is destroyed and arises again.

citi sarvaṃ citaḥ sarvaṃ citsarvaṃ sarvataśca cit | citsatsarvātmiketyetaddṛṣṭaṃ tatra mayākhilam || 23 ||

Everything is consciousness, consciousness is everything, consciousness is all and everywhere. This truth of the self being pure consciousness has been realized by me completely.

tvaṃ kiṃciditi cedvakṣi tatra kiṃ cidivāṅga cit | sā hi śūnyatamā vyomno na ca nāma na kiṃcana || 24 ||

If you say 'you are something', then what is that something? It is like the emptiness of space, without name or form.

tadākāśamidaṃ bhāti jagadityabhiśabditam | tenaiva śabdanabhasā sarve hi paramaṃ nabhaḥ || 25 ||

This space appears as the world, named as such. By that very sound of space, all indeed is the supreme space.

dṛśyadṛṣṭiriyam bhrāntirākāśatarumañjarī | cidvyomāṅga kameveti tatrāhamanubhūtavān || 26 ||

This perception and the perceived are illusions, like a tree in the sky. What is the desire in the expanse of consciousness? I have experienced that there.

buddhyākāśaikarūpeṇa vyāpinā bodharūpiṇā | tatrānantena saṃkalpamanubhūtamidaṃ mayā || 27 ||

By the all-pervading form of the intellectual sky, which is the nature of consciousness, I have experienced this infinite resolve there.

brahmavyoma jagajjālaṃ brahmavyoma diśo daśa | brahmavyoma kalākāladēśadravyakriyādikam || 28 ||

The Brahma-sky is the web of the universe, the Brahma-sky is the ten directions, the Brahma-sky is the time, place, substance, and action.

tatrāhamiva saṃsāraśatē bhātē munīśvarāḥ | dṛṣṭā vasiṣṭhanāmānō brahmaputrāḥ saduttamāḥ || 29 ||

There, I appear as if in hundreds of worlds, O great sages, the best of the good, the sons of Brahma, named Vasistha, are seen.

brahmandvāsaptatis tretāḥ sarvā eva sarāghavāḥ | tatra dṛṣṭaṃ kṛtaśataṃ dvāparāṇāṃ śataṃ tathā || 30 ||

All the seventy Brahmanda-Dvaparas and Treta Yugas are full of Raghavas. There, a hundred Krita Yugas and a hundred Dvapara Yugas are seen.

bhedodayena vai dṛṣṭāstāstāḥ sargadaśāstathā | bodhena cet tadatyacchamekaṃ brahma nabhastatam || 31 ||

By the rise of differences, indeed, those various states of creation are seen. But by knowledge, that is transcended, the one Brahma is the supreme sky.

nedaṃ brahmaṇi nāmāsti jagadbrahmaṇyatha tvidam | brahmaivājamanādyantaṃ tatsarvaṃ tatpadādikam || 32 ||

This world is not different from Brahman; it is Brahman itself. Brahman is the beginningless and endless cause of everything.

pāṣāṇamounapratimaṃ nakiṃcidabhiśabditam | yattatkiṃciditi dyotarūpaṃ brahma jagatsmṛtam || 33 ||

Like a stone statue, it is not expressed by any word. That which is known as 'something' is the luminous form of Brahman, remembered as the world.

vibhātyacetyaṃ cidvyomni svasattaiava jagattayā | nirākāre nirākārā svapnānubhavasaṃnibhā || 34 ||

The insentient world appears in the conscious space of Brahman by its own existence. Formless in the formless, it is like a dream experience.

ananyamātmano brahma sarvaṃ bhāmātrarūpakam | prakāśanamivālokaḥ karoti na karoti ca || 35 ||

Brahman, which is non-different from the self, is the form of pure existence. It illuminates like vision, both acting and not acting.

teṣu nāmānubhūyante jagallakṣeṣu tatra vai | uṣṇāni candrabimbāni sūryāḥ śītalamūrtayaḥ || 36 ||

In the world, names and experiences are perceived. There, the suns are cool forms, and the moon's disks are hot.

prajāstamasi paśyanti paśyantyeva na tejasi | ulūkasya samācārāstasyeva sadṛśasvarāḥ || 37 ||

People see only darkness, not the light. Their behavior is like that of an owl, which is active only in the dark.

itaḥ śubhena naśyanti yānti pāpais tathā divam | viṣāśanena jīvanti mriyante'mṛtabhojanaiḥ || 38 ||

From this, the virtuous perish, and the sinful go to heaven. Those who consume poison live, and those who consume nectar die.

yadyathā budhyate bodhe yathodetyathavā svataḥ | tathāśu sphuṭatāmeti sadvāsadvā tadeva tat || 39 ||

Whatever is understood in knowledge, whether it arises spontaneously or not, it immediately becomes clear, whether it is true or false.

viṭapākāramūlaughadarśanādvajraśobhibhiḥ | ghūrṇate patrapuṣpābhaiḥ pādapairvyomni kānanam || 40 ||

By the sight of the roots of the tree-like clouds, adorned with lightning, the forest of trees with leaves and flowers whirls in the sky.

sikatāḥ pīḍitāḥ satyaḥ sravanti sneha jaṃ rasam | śilāphalakakebhyaśca jāyante kamalānyalam || 41 ||

The oppressed grains of sand flow with the juice of affection. From the stone slabs, lotuses are born effortlessly.

dāruṇyaśmani bhittau ca cañcalāḥ śālabhañjikāḥ | devāṅganābhiḥ sahitaṃ gāyanti kathayanti ca || 42 ||

In the cruel stone walls, the restless Śālabhañjikās, along with the divine maidens, sing and narrate.

meghānparidadhyuccairbhūtānyuccaiḥ paṭāniva | prativarṣaṃ vijātīyānyutpadyante phalānyage || 43 ||

The clouds cover the beings like high screens, and every year, various kinds of fruits are produced on the earth.

saṃniveśairna niyatairañgānāṃ vividhāṅgakaiḥ | śirobhiḥ sarvabhūtāni parikrāmanti bhūmigaiḥ || 44 ||

With various arrangements of limbs, all beings wander on the earth with their heads.
