ime ye jīvasaṃghātā dṛśyante daśa diggatāḥnaranāgasurāgendragandharvādyabhidhānakāḥ || 1 ||
These are the various living beings that are seen in the ten directions, known by names such as humans, serpents, demons, gods, and celestial musicians.
te svapnajāgarāḥ kecitkecitsaṃkalpajāgarāḥkecitkevalajāgratsthāścirājjāgratsthitāḥ pare || 2 ||
Some of these beings are in a state of dreaming wakefulness, some in a state of imaginative wakefulness, some in a state of pure wakefulness, and others in a state of prolonged wakefulness.
Some other beings are in a state of dense wakefulness, others in a state of wakefulness mixed with dreams, and still others in a state of diminished wakefulness. Thus, living beings are remembered in seven forms.
Sri Rama said: O Lord, please explain to me the differences among these seven forms of living beings, just as the differences among the waters of the oceans.
Shri Vasistha said: In the end of the dream delusion, they are liberated or fall into sleep. Having obtained a body by will, they resort to others in the same way.
The world, which is of the nature of imagination, is like a worn-out fig tree and its insects. It is said to be like a dream and a waking state. Listen to the waking state of imagination.
Either detached from meditation or following the sway of the mind's kingdom, they attain the firmness of imagination, with their past experiences dissolved.
Those who are awake due to resolve are said to be these beings who rest in resolve, living beings who move in the world. Listen to those who are purely awake.
ta eva duṣkṛtāveśājjaḍasthāvaratāṃ gatāḥghanajāgrattayā proktā jāgratsu ghanatāṃ gatāḥ || 21 ||
Those who are engrossed in evil deeds become inert like immovable objects. They are said to be in a state of dense wakefulness, and in wakefulness, they become dense.
ye tu śāstrārthasatsaṅgabodhitā bodhamāgatāḥpaśyanti svapnavajjāgrajjāgratsvapnā bhavanti te || 22 ||
Those who are enlightened by the company of good scriptures and the meaning of truth, they see the wakeful state as a dream. They become awake in the dream.
ye tu saṃprāptasaṃbodhā viśrāntāḥ parame padekṣīṇajāgratprabhṛtayaste turyāṃ bhūmikāṃ gatāḥ || 23 ||
Those who have attained perfect enlightenment and are rested in the supreme state, they have transcended the wakeful state and have reached the fourth state.
Thus, the sevenfold distinction among beings has been explained to you, like the seven oceans. Having understood this, may you attain the supreme good.
bhrāntiṃ parityaja jagadgaṇanātmikāṃ tvaṃ bodhaikarūpaghanatāmalamāgato'siśūnyatvavarjitamaśūnyatayā ca muktaṃ tena dvayaikyakavimuktavapustvamādyam || 25 ||
Abandon the delusion of the world's multiplicity. You have attained the pure state of enlightenment, free from emptiness and filled with non-emptiness. Liberated, you are the primordial form of the duality-transcending liberated being.
